When 14-year-old Matthew Hay sets out to do something, he puts in 100% effort, and the Eagle Scout project he is currently working on is no different. A Life Scout with Boy Scout Troop 39 in Mount Joy, Matthew decided to build a veterans memorial in the Mount Joy Cemetery, 275 Terrace Road, as part of the journey to earn his Eagle Scout ranking. “ It’s because my dad is a veteran,” explained Matthew, whose father, Joshua Hay, served in the United States Navy from 2001 to 2008. In a letter that Matthew wrote and sent to local businesses to explain his project and seek financial support for the project, he discussed the importance of honoring local veterans. Matthew came up with the idea of building a veterans memorial while participating in putting flags at the cemetery with his troop. “This memorial will
provide a place for the entire community to honor and remember our veterans,” wrote Matthew in the letter.
The memorial is going to be installed in the middle of the cemetery in a circular grass area approximately 57 feet in diameter with a 46-foot walking path through the center. In June 2019, Matthew and his fellow Scouts, along with other teenage and adult volunteers from the community, installed the walking path that now runs through the center of the area where the memorial will be. After brainstorming, Matthew drew the design for the memorial on paper before working together with his uncle, who is an engineer, to create a 3-D CAD image that he included in the letters he mailed. Approximately $25,000 is needed for the entire project, and Matthew said that $13,000 has been donated thus far. As more funds come in, Matthew will complete the rest of the project. See Veterans Memorial pg 3
Members of Boy Scout Troop 39 in Mount Joy helped Matthew Hay to lay a walking path for the veterans memorial he is in the process of constructing at the Mount Joy Cemetery for his Eagle Scout project.

May 25. So far, he estimates that he has put more than 300 hours into the project. “It’s a huge undertaking, but it’s typical for him to not take the easy way out,” Joshua said. “He has come up with the whole thing on his own. He always has to do something that’s over the top.” Matthew is homeschooled and has been involved with Boy Scouts since he was 8 years old. He also participates in the Lancaster Archery Club and attends church at LCBC - Manheim Campus. Matthew’s family, which also includes his mom, Ashleigh, and three younger siblings, resides in Elizabethtown. Seven flagpoles will be installed: one with an American flag and POW/MIA flag and the others holding the flags representing each branch of the military. Two aluminum benches will flank either side of the walkway. A large granite memorial will be placed at the end of the walkway and will be engraved with an American flag and the following tribute: “In honor of all service members who have fought and will fight for our freedom and our country and in memory of those who have given their lives in defense of our liberty, WE SALUTE YOU! Land of the free because of the BRAVE.” Matthew came up with the wording with help from his great-uncle, who is a retired United States Army general. Below the tribute, each of the major conflicts from the Civil War to the Global War on Terrorism will be listed. Matthew’s goal is to have the memorial completed by Memorial Day, Monday,

Jessica Kinsey, a board member with GiGi’s Playhouse Lancaster, wants families with children who have Down syndrome and other disabilities to know that a support system is available. “I would have loved to have had this once we had our prenatal diagnosis,” said Kinsey. “We want to educate (the community by providing) more information (for families).” A huge step in raising awareness of the positive impact people with Down syndrome and other disabilities can have will take place on Saturday, Jan. 11, when GiGi’s Playhouse, a Down Syndrome Achievement Center, will open at 2503 Oregon Pike,
Lancaster. An open house to celebrate the grand opening will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Although the open house is a drop-in event, Jen Voshell, who is also a board member, said that specific activities are planned. Self-guided tours of the facility, which includes a large room, two small rooms, a kitchen, and a family room, will be available from 1 to 2 p.m. At 2 p.m., Nancy Gianni, who founded GiGi’s Playhouse in 2002 and named it for her daughter GiGi, will speak, as will GiGi’s Playhouse president Kim King. “Some of our families will talk about what GiGi’s Lancaster means to them,” said Voshell. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held, and refreshments will be served.
Gianni, who founded GiGi’s in Chicago, was inspired to start the program after holding a support group meeting for families of children with Down syndrome in a room made available in a local hospital. GiGi’s Playhouse Lancaster is the 47th playhouse to open in the United States. “GiGi’s differs because everything we offer is free to families,” said Kinsey, who listed therapeutic services, such as speech, physical, occupational, and social services among the playhouse’s offerings. “All family members are welcome and encouraged to stay,” she stated, adding, “It’s not therapy just for our individuals with Down syndrome, it’s (a model) for what you can do in-home.” Kinsey also noted that GiGi’s Playhouse is inclusive. “It’s not just for individuals with Down syndrome,” she said. Christine Hewitt said that GiGi’s grew

to Shine is one of hundreds of events sponsored by the Tim Tebow Foundation and held each year on the first Friday of February to create an unforgettable prom experience for people with special needs. Night to Shine is one of several ministries led by the foundation established by Tebow, a former professional quarterback and current professional baseball outfielder and college football analyst for the SEC Network. This year’s Lancaster Collaboration of Night to Shine will be held from 5:45 to 10 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 7, in Olympic Hall at Spooky Nook Sports, while hundreds of other events are hosted simultaneously by volunteers at sites around the world. People age 14 and older with special needs are invited to attend and may register at www.gbclancaster.org/night2shine by Sunday, Jan. 26. Admission is free. The Lancaster Collaboration originally hosted Night to Shine at Grace Baptist Church of Lancaster before relocating to Manheim Brethren in Christ Church last year. According to Ketchum, 270 guests attended in 2019, and organizers are projecting 370 guests for 2020. Donations are still needed to support Night to Shine. “One hundred dollars covers one guest and their buddy, plus all of the activities that we offer,” Ketchum said. Guests will be greeted by friendly paparazzi - ranging from photographers to local mascots - surrounding a red carpet entrance. Formal doormen will direct attendees to a registration area where they will meet a volunteer buddy whom they will be paired with for the evening. Hair and makeup and shoe shining services will be offered, too. Following a seated formal dinner, guests will have the chance to dance, sing karaoke on stage, pose in a photo booth, play cornhole, win door prizes, get treats from the ice cream parlor and coffee station, and take limousine rides. All guests will receive a printed photo of themselves on the red carpet and a goodie bag of snacks and other fun items donated by local businesses. A parent and caregiver respite lounge will also be provided. More than 550 volunteers contributed to the success of the 2019 event, and organizers are seeking volunteers to help in a number of ways for 2020. Interested individuals may learn more and sign up at www.gbclancaster.org/night2shine. Donations may also be made at that website. Readers may also contact Ketchum at 717314-7125 or j_bomb_67@yahoo.com for more information.

Farm Show from pg 1 Transporting all of those animals to the Farm Show Complex in time for their competitions will take three trips. “It’s going to be an all-nighter,” said the boys’ mother, Tracy Zimmerman, with a laugh. But that driving time, plus all of the unseen effort leading up to it, is more than worth it for Tracy and her husband, Ryan Zimmerman, who hope to develop and instill a lifelong hard work ethic in their sons through projects like this. “It teaches them responsibility,” noted Ryan. “And commitment and

In addition to animals, the Pennsylvania Farm Show will feature hundreds of exhibitors, vendors, and demonstrations; a 1,000-pound butter sculpture; and an assortment of food and beverages. HARTZ Physical Therapy will open a new location of its Medically Adapted Gym (MAG) at its office located at 755 E. Main St., Mount Joy.
