St. Mark’s United Methodist Church (UMC), 17 E. Main St., Mount Joy, has announced that its Family/Fellowship/Outreach Team will hold a soup sale to raise funds to help support its 2019 events. The team will sell quarts of homemade chicken corn noodle soup, potato soup, and vegetable beef soup at a set fee per quart. Soup

GBC has hosted a Night to Shine for the past two years, and event coordinator Joell Ketcham said that GBC decided to try a new and larger location for 2019. The event will take place on Friday, Feb. 8, in the gymnasium at Manheim BIC, 54 N. Penryn Road, Manheim. People age 14 and older with special needs are invited to attend and may register at https://gbclancaster.org/night2shine by Friday, Jan. 25. Admission is free. “One of (Tebow’s) purposes in doing (Night to Shine) is to change the trajectory of how we think of Valentine’s Day,” explained Ketcham. In planning out the details, Ketcham’s goal is to make the experience as over-the-top and memorable as possible for each person who attends. “We have about 12 churches that partner with us now, and we try to knock it out of the park. I want it to be the kind of thing that when they walk in the door, it wows them,” shared Ketcham. “I want them to feel that we took time and really thought about them, because they deserve it.” Guests will be greeted by what Ketcham described as friendly paparazzi - ranging from photographers to local mascots such as Cylo surrounding a red carpet entrance. Formal doormen will direct attendees to a registration area where they will meet a volunteer buddy whom they will be paired with for the evening. Hair and makeup and shoe shining services will be offered, too. Following a seated formal dinner, guests will have the chance to dance, sing karaoke, pose in a photo booth, play cornhole, win door prizes, get treats from the ice cream parlor and coffee station, and take limousine rides. “The limos are a big hit,” noted Ketcham. Each ride is a short loop, but organizers pull out all the stops for guests, offering them sparkling cider and other goodies to

add to the thrill. Upon their return to the building, guests receive a crown and sash as their name is announced on the red carpet. Each guest will receive a printed photo of themself on the red carpet and a goodie bag chock full of healthy snacks and other fun items donated by local businesses. A parent and caregiver respite lounge will also be provided. Night to Shine events will be hosted by approximately 700 churches around the world on the same date, and Ketcham emphasized that everything is made possible through donations and volunteer efforts. “We get a lot of thank-yous from the parents and guests,” Ketcham shared. “Some have said that this is the first time their child has gotten to do something normal that was just for them. A lot of people just talk about the unconditional love that they felt.” Volunteers are needed for the Night to Shine event, and interested individuals may sign up at https://gbclancaster.org/night 2shine, where they will have the option to select their top three choices for ways to serve. Options vary from helping with setup, parking, registration, coat check, food preparation or service, beverage stations, and cleanup and teardown to providing assistance with karaoke, the dance floor, the red carpet, first aid, and more. Individuals age 16 and older are welcome to sign up to serve as buddies for guests. Financial donations are also needed, along with donations of items for goodie bags and door prizes. For more information on how to help or donate, readers may visit the aforementioned website or contact Ketcham at 717-314-7125 or j_bomb_67@yahoo.com. erous donors, and more, the state’s charitable food system will provide more than half a million servings of ground venison through food banks, soup kitchens, and pantries throughout the commonwealth. Now in its 27th season, the nonprofit charity Hunters Sharing the Harvest (HSH) helps to coordinate the donation, processing, and distribution of venison to Pennsylvanians facing food insecurity. HSH has donated 1,356,281 pounds of venison to the hungry since 1991. The Department of Agriculture partners with HSH to cover some of the costs of processing the meat, with the department increasing its share of financial support over the last two years due to increased deer donations. With continued support, Pennsylvania hunters can donate their deer cost-free. During the 2017-18 season, a total donation was made of 3,337 deer, yielding 130,930 pounds of deer meat and providing 667,400 meals for individuals and families in need. Due to this increase in donations, additional meat processors are being recruited throughout the year to better help turn hunters’ donations into high-value protein for hungry families. This year, the department will help to cover the service cost of more than 110 processors throughout the

the largest nonprofit food distribution organization in central Pennsylvania and serves as the ongoing host of HSH’s annual kickoff event. The food bank counts on HSH each year to provide thousands of pounds of lean venison from deer harvested by central Pennsylvania hunters. HSH also works in partnership with the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources’ Deer Management Assistance Program to receive donations to help conserve a healthy, natural habitat that supports wildlife diversity and healthy deer populations throughout the state. HSH also partners with the Pennsylvania Game Commission, which donates $20,000 annually and uses deer management practices that directly provide venison to the program. Hunters interested in participating can take their deer to one of the participating meat processors throughout the state and donate any amount of their venison to the program. Pennsylvanians can also donate money to the Buck for the Pot campaign, which supports HSH. For more information on Hunters Sharing the Harvest, readers may visit www.share deer.org. There are many quotes exhorting people to be part of something bigger than themselves. Richmond Wandera, a native of Kampala, Uganda, has lived them. On Dec. 14, 2018, Wandera graduated from Lancaster Bible College (LBC) with a Doctor of Philosophy in leadership, with the goal of taking what he has learned back to his home country to spread knowledge among pastors there. “Uganda has 40 million people and 85,000 pastors, but 70 percent of (the pastors have) had no training,” said Wandera. “(Yet) they are forced to explain complex theology.” Wandera added that theological information is not easily available. Wandera realized that a biblical solution to the problem existed. “Jesus identified a few leaders and went deep with (teaching) them and then sent them out to multiply themselves,” said Wandera. “My mantra is ‘Train one to reach many.’” This biblical solution led Wandera to found a nonprofit called Pastors Discipleship Network after completing a year at Moody Bible Institute in Chicago in 2008. Pastors are now being trained through LBC’s blended program, which mixes online learning with regular visits to the campus. The program was introduced at LBC in 2016 following a visit to Uganda by LBC president Dr. Peter Teague. Wandera noted that pastors carefully selected for character, practice, and giftedness have been offered the opportunity to earn a Master of Arts in ministry. To date, 40 students have graduated. Twenty more are due to graduate in June. Each pastor is charged with sharing what he or she has learned with one pastor in Africa per year for the next five years. The inspiration for the program had its roots in Wandera’s own story. The third of six children, Wandera shared that he and his family witnessed his father’s murder in 1990. “It changed our entire family,” said Wandera, whose family then moved to Naguru, a slum in Kampala. “It’s called a forgotten community. There is very little hope there,” said Wandera. In 1991, hope arrived in the form of

sponsorship through Compassion International. Wandera and one of his sisters were sponsored and began attending the church through which that sponsorship was extended. Four years later, Wandera came to understand the Gospel. Noting that his family came from a traditional African background, Wandera said that the story of Joseph resonated with him. Later his sister and his mother made decisions for Christ as well. Eventually his whole family became part of the fold. Wandera finished high school in 2000, and in 2004 he graduated from Uganda Christian University with a bachelor’s degree in accounting and began working toward his certification with a goal of training accountants to do business ethically. He began teaching accounting, but he also felt a call to become a pastor. “I was deeply moved by change that happened in our home because of the Gospel,” said Wandera. With encouragement from his pastor, he began pastoring at the church, but one night a woman who had lost a 3-year-old child to malaria asked him a question he could not answer. Distraught, Wandera returned to working in accounting. A discussion with Steve Wilson, a worker from Compassion International, brought him back to the ministry. He received the first Wesley K. Stafford scholarship to the Moody Bible Institute, with the goal of taking back what he learned to pastors in Africa. Wandera reached that goal only to find that many of the pastors needed leadership training as well as theological knowledge. That need led to him to LBC, where he began working toward his doctorate as a recipient of LBC’s Wesley K. Stafford Leadership Development Scholarship, established in 2013.

Back in 2004, Joan Espenshade noticed the large number of children waiting for breakfast outside a Lancaster city school on a Monday morning. Recognizing that these children may not be receiving adequate nutrition over the weekend, she founded Power Packs Project to help meet the nutritional needs of those children between Friday and Monday over the school year. The project sought to educate families as well by providing a recipe using low-cost ingredients that they could learn to replicate. Today, Power Packs Project has grown to help feed 1,600 families weekly 32 weeks per year by distributing ingredients for one low-cost meal in most Lancaster County school districts, but Jennifer Thompson, who became executive director in May, has identified several challenges Power Packs faces going forward. Among these are the need for volunteers, the need to add food sourcing resources, and the ability to provide nutritious food that can be utilized by families from a variety of cultural backgrounds. Volunteers are needed both at the Power Packs warehouse, located on Walnut Street in Lancaster, and at the schools and other sites where food is distributed. “We need volunteer drivers to deliver food to schools, and we need volunteers at the schools for packing,” said Thompson, who noted that because of a rotating schedule, volunteers can serve as little as once a month. She added that certain volunteer positions can be physically demanding. Volunteers who work at the warehouse or drive vans should be agile and able to lift up to 40 pounds. At the school sites, packing the bags is not as physically demanding. Thompson said that she has special appreciation for the organization’s volunteer base. “We are trying to grow our volunteer base and learn from the volunteers who have been with us for many years,” she stated. Finding food that is nutritious, rather than processed or high in sugars, is always a challenge for Power Packs, according to Thompson. “We would love to have more connections for food sourcing,” said Thompson, who noted that tortilla shells and fresh fruits and vegetables like broccoli, green peppers, bananas, grapes, and oranges are on her wish list. Thompson said that the organization is

Uganda from pg 1

aware of the ethnic and cultural diversity of the population it serves and that steps are being taken to meet those specific needs. “We are learning about those families and what they eat,” she said. “We have to source foods that are different. We need rice, and we need foods that are kosher (or) if (a family doesn’t) eat meat, how do we (meet) their (nutritional) needs with foods they will eat? We want to make sure we send home food families will recognize and try to cook and eat.” In addition to working with school social workers to learn how to better educate and empower families, Power Packs has partnered with a team at Georgetown University for a research project focused on the importance of nutrition in early childhood development. “We are looking forward to having our program evaluated and really learning,” said Thompson. Thompson comes to the position with experience in both food service and directing nonprofit organizations. She oversaw St. Joseph’s Children’s Health Foundation and also worked at St. Joseph Medical Center in Towson, Md. During that time, she ran a catering service and sold gourmet soups. In 2010, she realized her dream of owning a café in Lancaster, a place she called “homey and comfortable” that was open for nearly five years. Power Packs’ signature fundraiser is a spring Stay-at-Home Gala, which encourages families to stay home and donate the funds they would have used to attend an event. This year, the organization took part in the Extraordinary Give in November, ranking in the top 25 recipients by raising nearly $75,000. Power Packs welcomes both online and traditional donations year-round. Readers who would like to learn more about the program or sign up to volunteer may visit the organization’s redesigned website at www.powerpacksproject.org.

male and female winners. Additional prizes will be distributed to the top three male and female finishers in each age group. Special discounts will be available at Funk Brewing to Frozen Foot participants following each race. Through the decades, Wells said that the number of runners has fluctuated perhaps due to the influx of 5K events in recent years. The inaugural Frozen Foot series had 16 runners and later grew to more than 800 participants one year; however, in recent years Wells said the event has averaged about 375 participants. “I don’t know that any of us that worked on (Frozen Foot) in the beginning thought that it would be around this long,” said Wells. “It’s great. I’m happy that the race has been around that long.” A portion of the race proceeds benefits the Christ Church United Church of Christ mission fund to help people domestically and abroad. Wells said that the destination for this summer’s service project has not yet been finalized but will likely be somewhere within the United States. For more information on the Frozen Foot 5K Race Series, interested individuals may visit the aforementioned website or call Wells at 717-580-6983.

Wells. “If you finish all three races, you’ll be able to build yourself a snowman (out of the medals).” The races are set to begin at 2 p.m. on Sundays, Jan. 20, Feb. 17, and March 17, on the campus of Elizabethtown College. Each of the three races will follow the same rolling route through a neighboring development and around the college campus. Wells noted that the Idiots Option 10K, which was added for the first time in 2017, was a success and will be available again for those looking to complete a longer distance by covering the 5K course twice. The name sparked from a conversation Wells had in the past with two participants: One suggested the addition of a 10K, while the other remarked, “What kind of idiot would do that?” Interested individuals may register for the 5K or 10K series at www.applied racemgmt.com/events. Those who register for the series by the first race will receive a custom long-sleeve tech shirt. On-site registration will also be available prior to each race. Race packet pickup will take place on race days between noon and 1:45 p.m. in the Bucher Meetinghouse at Elizabethtown College. Signage will be posted directing participants to the area. Following each race, hot homemade soup will be served. Awards will be presented at approximately 3:15 p.m. Participants will also be entered to win door prize giveaways. Individual event awards will be bestowed upon the overall male and female winners, the masters male and female winners, and the first-, second- and third-place male and female winners for each five-year age group. Series awards, which will be presented at a ceremony at Funk Brewing, 28 S. Market St., Elizabethtown, on March 17, will include prize money for the overall male and female winners and the masters

The interactive sessions led by Miss Jan use preschool-level books, songs, and activities to engage a child’s five senses in developing emerging literacy and social interaction. Themes vary from month to month, but each meeting begins and ends with singing the “Hello” and “Goodbye” songs, respectively. Miss Jan noted that cards listing the day’s activity are posted and cards are removed as the group finishes each activity so that anyone who needs to know the format can easily refer to it. One recent session focused on spiders, with participants hearing the book “Walter’s Wonderful Web”

Created by Patrick Mack of Indianapolis and located in front of the Lancaster Airport Terminal, the permanently mounted polished stainless steel sculpture represents humanity’s love of flight. During a private ceremony, the sculpture was dedicated in memory of Marvin E. Miller Jr., past Pennsylvania legislator, Lancaster businessman, and member of the Authority’s board of directors. For nearly 23 years, Miller gave his time and talents to the airport’s growth and success. He served on the Authority board, most notably as chairman, from 1998 until his death in 2016. Along with Miller’s widow, judge Margaret C. Miller, family, friends and business associates attended the ceremony.

The Lancaster Airport Authority recently unveiled its new sculpture, “We Care to Dream.” Patrick Mack created the piece.

Airport Unveils New Sculpture

Show To Feature “Book Of Matthew Project” The Community Room on King, 106 W. King St., Lancaster, will host a show titled “The Book of Matthew Project” by artist Daehong Kim for First Friday, Jan. 4, from 6 to 9 p.m. “The Book of Matthew Project” was conceived in June 2010 as a personal pledge to support a church ministry that was sending a group of young adults on a short-term service mission to South Korea. Kim committed to handwriting each verse from the Gospel of Matthew on individual cards, accounting for 1,071 verses. Kim also invited people to participate by contributing verses, and these verses and others were collected and applied on five canvases. The purpose of writing each verse was to facilitate a contemplative mode of worship and to help Kim choose wonder, praise, and gratitude in response to a challenging time in his life. Kim is an American artist who was born in South Korea in the late 1970s. He took up studio art and music performance as a child. At age 7, he became fascinated with basic generative design in a computer programming class. He is an advocate of art as an agent for telling stories and as a medium of renewal. He considers art integral to the narrative of his personal pilgrimage in human portrait and faith. Attendees of the First Friday event will be able to meet the artist, read some of the handwritten verses, and enjoy snacks.
