This summer, six young men from Lancaster County - ranging in age from 15 to 19 - will be flying to the West Coast to take on a 3,820-mile, 63-day bicycle ride from Oregon to Maine. The Trans Am Extreme Challenge Ride is a new undertaking for each of the riders and for Lifecycles, a nonprofit mentoring program committed to building young men and women of character through bicycling adventures. Retired United States Air Force Col. Lee DeRemer developed the vision for Lifecycles after seeing a transformation of sorts in his nephews after they had conquered a bicycle trip through Montana and Wyoming together. DeRemer had planned that adventure after his nephews lost their father to cancer as a way to spend time together and provide some of the male leadership they were

now missing in their lives. The joy and growth that trip yielded was something DeRemer believed could be replicated on a larger scale. Today, volunteers from Lifecycles lead weekly rides for teenage boys in Landisville, Marietta, and New Holland and for girls in Lititz. More than 80 riders participated in the 2019 season, and more than 160 riders have been a part of Lifecycles since the program began in 2015. A free meal is served, and bicycles, helmets, and shirts are supplied for all participants. Interested individuals are encouraged to sign up ahead of time at www.lifecyclesteam.org if they would like to join a ride. Walk-ins are welcome too. Additionally, Lifecycles organizes annual summer challenge rides for participants. The inaugural challenge ride consisted of nine teenagers and seven adult guides pedaling 290 miles to

This summer, Lifecycles has planned a Trans Am Extreme Challenge Ride that will give six boys the chance to ride from Oregon to Maine. Niagara Falls. As the organization has grown, so have the challenges, with different trips being planned for riders of various ability levels.

LBC To Present “Ruth” Musical Building Resilience Through Trauma-Informed Practices By Ann Mead Ash

When David Felty, executive producer, considered bringing the Sight and Sound Theatres original production of “Ruth” to the Lancaster Bible College (LBC) stage, he felt the show, based on one of only two books of the Bible dedicated to the story of a woman, should have a female perspective. With that in mind, he brought in Heather Grayberg to direct and choreograph, along with an all-female creative team that includes Leslie Talley and Gabrielle Hines as assistant directors, Kendra Bigley as music director, Katie Moser as set designer, and women overseeing costumes and props. “Ruth” will be staged on Fridays, Jan. 24 and 31, at 7 p.m.; on Saturdays, See “Ruth” pg 2

Preparing for their roles in the Lancaster Bible College production of “Ruth” are (from left) Kayla Valesquez, understudy for the role of Naomi; Samantha Ingram, who will play Naomi; and Delaney Bigley, who is alternating with Kristin Hurdleston in the role of Ruth. The show will play in the college’s Good Shepherd Chapel on weekends from Jan. 24 through Feb. 2.

The About Child Trauma (ACT) Foundation, a nonprofit organization based in Mount Joy, offers traumainformed training to organizations and professionals with the goal of helping children to heal from the effects of early trauma. Executive director Lark Eshleman, MLS, MS, Ph.D., who specializes in the field of trauma and attachment, wants people to know that they can all have a hand in fostering resilience - the antidote to child trauma. “What we know is that relationships are key, and one caring adult can change a person’s life,” stated Eshleman. “That person doesn’t need to live with them but needs to be consistent and safe. To be that person for a child in need is a gift beyond measure.” See ACT pg 10

Lark Eshleman serves as executive director of the About Child Trauma Foundation and is one of several professionals in the organization who is available to present Pennsylvania Department of Educationapproved Act 48 trauma-informed courses that cover topics including emotional trauma, complex trauma, trauma and sensory processing disorder, and mindfulness.

focusing on the heart of the tale. “This bond between these two women is beautiful,” she said. “We are stripping the story down and bringing out the human aspect,” she said. “Ruth was used by God to facilitate (His plan).” From a musical perspective, Grayberg noted there will be significant changes. “This is the first time a Sight and Sound show will be done with a live orchestra,” she said, noting that LBC’s Dr. Bruce Gerlach listened to a recording of the show and wrote the score for a 26-piece orchestra. Songs that Grayberg believes will stand out include “I Will Go Where You Go,” and “By My Side,” which are sung by Ruth and Naomi together. She also pointed to a solo by Boaz called “Taking Your Chances.” As a choreographer, Grayberg said that there will be several songs that will include ensemble celebratory dances. “There’s a (number where) they enter the Temple of Chemosh, a god of the Moabites, with live percussion and extravagant dancing,” she said. As she deals with the challenges of bringing a big show to a smaller stage, Grayberg wants audiences to focus on the message of the show. “I hope audiences see this as a story of redemption and faithfulness and see that God works things out for good,” she said. Grayberg also lauded the cast members, noting that the

students feel honored and thankful to play the roles. “I hope (audience members) see the truthfulness of the actors,” she said. Tickets to the show may be purchased at www.lbc.edu/ events. Readers who have questions may call 717-560-8241.

Postal Service Shares Snow Removal Tips curbside or rural delivery should remove snow piles, such as those left by snow plows, to keep access to their mailboxes clear for letter carriers. Customers should keep in mind that painted porches and steps are particularly hazardous. While salting or rubber-backed mats help make them less slippery, customers should still clear the snow before a letter carrier arrives with the mail. In hazardous situations when delivery is suspended, customers should contact local postal officials to discuss ways to eliminate the hazard. Residents and businesses with blue collection boxes near their property are asked to keep them clear of snow and ice as well. According to the U.S. Postal Service, slips, trips, and falls are the leading cause of accidents among letter carriers. In addition to endangering the safety of the carrier, injuries to a letter carrier - or any visitor to a home - can result in costly liabilities to homeowners.

Winter is in full swing in Pennsylvania, accompanied by freezing temperatures, snow, and ice. The U.S. Postal Service asks customers to help letter carriers deliver mail safely by clearing snow and ice from sidewalks, stairs, porches, street approach, and mailboxes. Delivery service may be delayed or curtailed whenever streets or walkways present hazardous conditions for letter carriers or when snow is plowed against mailboxes. Delivery of curtailed mail will be attempted the next delivery day. To do their part to keep letter carriers safe and to help them continue to offer consistent delivery service, customers should heed the following tips: All customers should keep their mailbox or mail slot free of ice and snow. This includes the approach to and exit from the area, as well as sufficient space on both sides of curbside mailboxes. Customers receiving door delivery should ensure their sidewalks, steps, and porches are clear. Customers receiving

Jan. 25 and Feb. 1, at 2 and 7 p.m.; and on Sundays, Jan. 26 and Feb. 2, at 2 p.m. All shows will be held in the Good Shepherd Chapel at LBC, 901 Eden Road, Lancaster. Kristin Hurdleston and Delaney Bigley are double cast in the titular role, and Ruth’s mother-in-law, Naomi, is played by Samantha Ingram. The pair find themselves poor widows when Naomi’s husband, Elimelech, played by Richard Thomas, dies and her sons are killed. With only faith in God and each other, Naomi and Ruth set off on a journey that leads to a lesson about finding God’s plans when one’s own have failed. But “Ruth” is also a love story about the kinsman Boaz, played by Bryson Buffington, who rescues the women from their plight when

he falls in love with the title character. Brianna Brady will serve as the narrator, an otherworldly being who will at one point interact with the characters. While Grayberg is excited about the production, being the first to stage the show outside Sight and Sound comes with challenges. “It feels like we are workshopping a brand-new show,” she said, noting that the stage at the Good Shepherd Chapel is somewhat smaller than the one at Sight and Sound. “We have to make the show attainable, so the text and staging can be tricky as far as conveying the story, but I think it will feel more intimate,” said Grayberg. “Theater is a vehicle for us to feel emotions and learn things and discover things within ourselves,” noted Grayberg. To be sure “Ruth” fills these roles for the audience, Grayberg is

Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) will kick off its 100-year anniversary celebration in 2020 by bringing together volunteers to make 6,500 comforters on one day - Saturday, Jan. 18 - during an event known as The Great Winter Warm-up. Locally, the MCC East Coast office has set an additional goal of collecting 5,000 comforters during January, so events are scheduled before and after Jan. 18. The region has many MCC supporters who donate comforters throughout the year, including members of the Plain community, which spurred the added challenge. The Great Winter Warm-up January events will jump-start MCC’s supply of comforters, which are sent to people in crisis around the world each year. In 2018, MCC sent more than 53,000 comforters as a practical message of love and compassion in the name of Christ. East Coast supporters generated nearly 30,000 of those comforters for MCC’s ministries. During The Great Winter Warm-up events, volunteers are invited to help knot comforters as they celebrate MCC’s centennial. Participants will work together to combine handmade comforter tops, warm batting and sturdy backing fabric into warm, durable and beautiful comforters. The squares of fabric that make up the comforter tops have already been sewn together.

Pictured on front: Girls on the Run (GOTR) of Lancaster-Lebanon invites area residents to view the film “LIKE” on Jan. 31 at the Ware Center in Lancaster. The event is free to members of the public age 10 and up, but reservations are requested.

The trailer for the film “LIKE - A Documentary About the Impact of Social Media on Our Lives and the Effects of Technology on the Brain” ends with the daunting question, “Are you using technology or is it using you?” Girls on the Run (GOTR) of Lancaster-Lebanon hopes to start a conversation around that question when the organization presents the film on Friday, Jan. 31, at the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster. The event is free to members of the public age 10 and up. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m., and the film will be shown at 7 p.m. Sarah Yohe, development director with GOTR, said that the subject of the film is especially pertinent. “We know that technology is a really relevant topic for our girls and our entire community,” said Yohe. “This documentary really digs into the addiction piece of technology. It talks about how we spend a lot of time connected and feeling more disconnected than ever.” GOTR programs combine running with an interactive curriculum designed to promote good choices for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living. Yohe noted that the face-to-face time is important in the current cultural environment. “We get our girls together twice a week

for 10 weeks to make real live personal connections,” she said. The curriculum teaches life skills and strategies to help build confidence and character. A 2016 study found that a majority of the girls who completed the program learned to resolve conflict, help others, and manage emotions. To enhance the discussion, the screening will be followed by a panel discussion and the opportunity for the audience to ask questions. The panel will consist of a child psychologist, a Millersville University communications major, a technology expert, a local pediatrician, and a local school administrator. GOTR board members Katie Sandoe and Robin Sarrat will serve as moderators. The presentation will not end with the panel discussion, however. GOTR has partnered with the Lancaster County Community Foundation on the event, and May Renner of the foundation will close the evening with a visioning exercise. The film trailer features a number of people, many of them young women, talking about their connection to technology. One admits to having an unhealthy relationship with her phone, while another states that her parents say she is addicted to her phone. Evidence that technology usage affects the same parts of the brain that

Mosaic Completed At St. Leo The Great It was four years in the making, but a ceremony on Dec. 6 capped the celebration of the 50th anniversary of St. Leo the Great Catholic School that began in 2015. During the event, the Very Rev. Peter Hahn, pastor of St. Leo the Great Catholic Church, pronounced a blessing on a mosaic that was recently completed in the school’s lobby. Art teacher Kathryn Hemlick designed the mosaic, known as the Seven Sacrament Mosaic, and

oversaw its construction, investing more than 600 hours in the project. With the help of more than 350 students, 14,000 pieces of glass were carefully set in place, with the final image depicting the efficacious signs of the Catholic Church. The efficacious signs represent the seven sacraments that are believed to be the lifeforce of God, reaching down and offering the gift of grace, said school principal Christine McLean. “The mosaic art form signifies that God can transform brokenness into beauty. celebrating,” she added. About 50 people, including students in second, seventh, and eighth grades, attended the blessing of the mosaic. Students’ parents also attended, and McLean reported that one parent, visibly moved by the artwork, said, “As soon as you come into our parish school and see this mosaic hit you, you see our identity. God is a merciful God who wants to affect our lives in a personal and powerful way.” Hemlick was also touched by the event and expressed her gratitude for the support of the school community. “This really was a highlight of my life’s work, but it also was a team effort from the students and families; our pastor, Father Hahn; Principal McLean; and so many others,” she said. Open houses in January will give members of the public the opportunity to view the mosaic and learn about the school, which offers primary education through eighth grade. Families considering enrollment for their children are invited to attend an

Donegal Matmen In Contention For Section Title

by Vaughn Brown

With the Holiday season officially behind them, the Donegal wrestling team can now focus on its final four regular season matches in what is shaping up to be a wild finish in Section Two. At the end of last week there was a three-team logjam at the top with Garden Spot (3-0), Manheim Central (3-0), and Lampeter-Strasburg (2-0) all vying for top dog status with the Indians (3-1) nipping at their heels. Over the course of the next two weeks all four teams will battle it out amongst themselves as, with the exception of L-S, they have all earned their wins at the hands of Elizabethtown (2-2) Cedar Crest (1-3), Lebanon (0-4) and Ephrata (0-4). The Indians’

lone blemish belongs to the Pioneers who traveled into Mount Joy Thursday night and left with a 41-29 victory. After the two teams traded decision wins with Garrett Blake earning an 8-2 victory over Parker Owens at 195 pounds and Logan Bradley returning the favor at 220, L-S took over and never looked back. Zach Shelley was then handed a forfeit at heavyweight and Ethan Herr had to retire due to a shoulder injury suffered in his 106 pound contest with Connor Erb which made it 15-3 until Jansen Flohr accepted a forfeit at 113. Despite pulling within four points after Michael Al Saqqa defaulted to Wendall Jonas when he dislocated his elbow in their bout at 126, Donegal dropped the next four bouts and saw the deficit grow from 19-15 to 41-15.

Hector Colon’s fall at 152 closed the door on any chance the Indians had of completing a comeback. The Indians finished out strong, however, with Mason Ober collecting a technical fall at 5:25 into his 160 matchup with Joel Bitler followed by an 8-5 Joel Grillo decision over Kiam Feister at 170 and a third period pin at 182 from Will Small over Logan Davison at the 4:49 mark. Donegal’s remaining schedule includes the Spartans on the 8th of January, followed by Elizabethtown on the 15th, and the Barons on the 22nd before the final match of the season against Solanco on February 6th. BASKETBALL The current season has not been kind to the Donegal boys who picked

up only their second win this past Saturday with a 45-42 triumph over Dover in a non-league matchup. That followed up another close contest from the night before in which the Indians (0-5, 2-9) lost to Cocalico 41-36. Ryan Zuch led Donegal in scoring with seven points on Friday night as the Indians saw the middle portion of the game get away from them with the Eagles offense proving too much for the Indians to handle. Leading 9-7 after the first quarter of play, Donegal was outscored 26-15 over the next two quarters and despite a surge in the fourth, Cocalico escaped with the narrow victory. Tyler Cloud led the Eagles with 10 points on the night and Trey Griffin

and Carter Nuneville each had nine while the trio combined for each of Cocalico’s five three pointers. Luke Yunginger and Khalil Masden backed up Zuch with six points apiece for Donegal while Patrick Summers (5), Gavin Hawk (5), Cole Hess (4), and Xavier Cannon (3) helped as well. In Saturday’s game, the Indians found a way to hold off Dover in the fourth quarter and secured the threepoint win with both Joseph Hass (11) and Masden (10) pacing the team offensively. Masden also shone at the foul line as he converted 8 of 10 free throws to drive Donegal’s percentage upwards of 67 percent. In a back-and-forth-affair where the Indians held a slim 12-11 advantage heading into the second quarter,

Dover came back to claim a 22-21 lead at the half. The Indians outscored Dover 15-10 after the break and carried a 36-32 score into the fourth before holding on to win. Both Summers and Zuch netted six points apiece while Hawk followed with four, Connor Wilkin and Cannon added three each and Yunginger put up two. GIRLS’ BASKETBALL Kierra Baughman entered into the Donegal record books on December 20 as she officially became the all-time leading scorer in school history when she bucketed number 1,426 on the back end of a two-shot trip to the foul line versus Garden Spot. Passing Nicky Hess, Baughman finished the game at 1,441 and following her 24-points in a

Section Four following Friday’s game. Baughman’s 24 points was a game high followed by Hannah Custer who netted 19 for the Eagles. Cocalico led 17-8 at the end of the first quarter and was up 28-14 by halftime before adding another 28 in

ACT from pg 1 According to Eshleman, a 1998 study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) demonstrated how traumatic childhood events can be the root cause of many social, emotional, and cognitive impairments that contribute to an increase in highrisk health behaviors, chronic health conditions, emotional and behavioral dysfunction, and early death. Examples of ACEs are physical, emotional, or sexual abuse; physical or emotional neglect; and forms of household dysfunction such as divorce, mental illness, substance abuse, a parent being treated violently, and having an incarcerated relative. “The more adverse childhood experiences you have, the more in danger of certain physical, psychological, emotional, and behavioral issues (you are),” summarized Eshleman. In 2019, trauma-informed education became mandatory for staff at all Pennsylvania public schools with the passing of Senate Bill 144. The new legislation acknowledged that ACEs have a potentially long-term effect on a child’s functioning and wellbeing and implemented requisite training to help school board members, administrators, and faculty members to identify the signs and symptoms of trauma in students. Eshleman, who was named to the state’s Trauma Informed Practices in Schools Workgroup, and other professionals from the ACT Foundation lead workshops for educators, parents, representatives of professional agencies, and others who are interested. In

the fall of 2019, Eshleman led a trauma-informed training for the non-teaching staff at Donegal School District, and plans are underway for a series of interactive parenting workshops in February at the Milanof-Schock Library in Mount Joy. “Behaviors are often not what they seem,” stated Eshleman, who has worked as a children’s librarian, school psychologist, and principal and has served overseas with children traumatized in the war in the Balkans. Eshleman explained that implementing a trauma-informed approach as an educator or other person who works with children and youths involves asking questions about the root cause of an individual’s behavior. Depending on the answer, more questions must be asked to determine how the adult can best work with the child to address the behavior. Eshleman encourages adults to stay positive and open-minded in their interactions with others. Anyone interested in partnering with the ACT Foundation or in hosting one of the organization’s courses is welcome to contact Jeanne Dailey, director of operations, at 717-808-7134 or jeannedailey@gmail.com. ACT Foundation courses, which are all approved for Act 48 credits, include Introduction to Emotional Trauma, Trauma in the Classroom, Trauma and Sensory Processing Disorder, an interactional workshop for advanced skill building, and a two-part series on both Complex Trauma and Mindfulness. More information is available at www.aboutchildtrauma.org or on the “About Child Trauma” Facebook page.

Extension Offers Produce Safety Education Programs Rule. The Produce Safety Rule poses new regulatory challenges to the fresh produce industry in Pennsylvania and across the country. Latino growers and farmworkers had an unmet need for accessible Food Safety and Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) information, education, and resources. In order to provide short, easy-to-understand information, the Extension focused its educational materials and trainings on topics such as personal hygiene, microorganisms, and sources of contamination during, before,

and after harvest. The Extension team began by collecting, assessing, and archiving pre-existing educational materials related to FSMA and Farm Food Safety education available at the Penn State website. Team members identified gaps in programming in regard to content and methodology. As a result, 10 articles and two fact sheets were translated. The team reviewed and updated the Food Safety Training Kit and the GAP posters to match new public service announcement curricula and

Medical School Students Win Scholarships

Gillen Meets With Malmedy Massacre Survivor

The Lancaster Medical Society Foundation, a foundation of the Lancaster City & County Medical Society, recently awarded its 2019 scholarships to Matthew Bankert of Manheim, Luke Maillie of Lancaster, and Brogan Galbreath of Lititz. Bankert received a $5,000 scholarship; Maillie, $3,000; and Galbreath, $2,000. They were selected through a competitive review process with submissions of more than 20 applications from across Lancaster County. Bankert is a graduate of Washington College and a first-year medical school student at the Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine in Middletown, N.Y. Prior to enrolling in medical school, he served as a clinical research coordinator at the Penn State of College of Medicine in the Neuromuscular Division and ALS Center. Diagnosed with a pediatric disability at an early age, Bankert shared that he seeks to treat patients with a high level of compassion and understanding.

Pennsylvania State Rep. Mark M. Gillen (center) hosted World War II veteran Harold Billow (left) at the Veterans Affairs Committee office in Harrisburg. Joining them was Maj. Gen. Anthony J. Carrelli, the adjutant general of the Pennsylvania National Guard. Gillen recorded his interview with Billow, who shared his experience as a survivor of the Nazi war crime referred to as the Malmedy Massacre. The 75th anniversary of the event was recently marked; the event took place during the Battle of the Bulge. The 96year-old Billow, who resides in Mount Joy, is believed to be the last living survivor of the massacre.

Luke Maillie

Brogan Galbreath

Maillie graduated from University of Notre Dame and, following a gap year researching access to cancer care in Tanzania as a U.S. Fulbright scholar, is currently in his first year at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. He said that his interest in medicine began to take shape when he was high school volunteer at Penn State Hershey Medical Center and was solidified during a trip to Shirati, Tanzania. In Tanzania, he observed a need to improve access to cancer care. Galbreath, a graduate of Villanova University, is a student at

the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. When he was a small child, his life was saved by a diagnosis and subsequent treatment at Lancaster General Hospital. As a result of that experience, over time the treating physician became a mentor and helped Galbreath develop and explore a passion to pursue a medical career. Founded in 1991, the Lancaster Medical Society Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that was formed to grant scholarships to students from Lancaster County who are accepted at or continuing a medical degree at an

accredited allopathic or osteopathic medical school. Scholarship recipients exemplify good character, motivation, academic achievement, and financial need. Since the foundation’s inception, more than $244,000 in scholarships has been given to local students. For more information about the scholarship, how to apply, and how to make a gift to the foundation, readers may visit www.lancastermedicalsociety.org and click on Scholarship Foundation or contact the society at 717-393-9588.
