On Jan. 4, Gov. Tom Wolf and Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding kicked off the 2020 Pennsylvania Farm Show, inviting the show’s thousands of competitive exhibitors and nearly half a million visitors to embrace the 2020 theme, “Imagine the Opportunities.” Throughout the eight-day event, attendees had the chance to explore the breadth of Pennsylvania agriculture, its heritage, and the innovation driving its future. The ceremony began with a Pennsylvania State Police ceremonial color guard and the singing of the national anthem by the Greater Harrisburg Chorus’ Sweet Adelines, winners of the 2020 Pennsylvania Farm Show Oh Say, Can You Sing? contest. Serving as masters of ceremonies were Pennsylvania FFA president Timber Thebes of Perry County and Pennsylvania 4-H vice president of operations Kelsey Bish of Clarion and Venango counties. This year’s Pennsylvania Farm Show featured a variety of new exhibits, including a waterfowl habitat with real ducks and
ducklings, mounted archery, a quilt trail, cider sales and beer tasting, and low stimulation centers for those with sensory challenges. Along with these additions, fan favorites returned, such as the Pennsylvania Dairy Princess competition, the PA Preferred Culinary Connection stage, the So You Wanna Be a Farmer exhibit, a chick hatch, wine and cider tasting, a farmers market, and the Farm Show food court. Prior to the opening of the Farm Show, Redding and Lt. Gov. John Fetterman hosted a tasting event to preview new items on the menu at the food court. Also returning was the halfton butter sculpture. This year’s sculpture depicted three of Pennsylvania’s professional sports mascots - the Philadelphia Flyers’ Gritty, the Philadelphia Eagles’ Swoop, and the Pittsburgh Steelers’ Steely McBeam - celebrating with a spread of Pennsylvania dairy products. The sculpture, a long-time Farm Show staple, encourages Pennsylvanians to support Pennsylvania dairy. The Pennsylvania Farm Show,

Now in their 90s, the couple has supported the work of the ODC, and its participants, for more than 50 years. Ben first became involved in the early 1960s as a member of the AMBUCS, which raised funds for ODC. In 1965, when Ben was
heading up Wickersham Construction, the company built the second addition to the ODC building. Wickersham built the third addition in 1984. In the 1980s, Ben served as board president. “(The Bowmans) have been big supporters (of ODC),” said Mueller of Ben and Mignon, who have been generous with both their time and finances. ODC Auxiliary that raises money for the organization. “They are a sweet couple, and are still active with ODC in a variety of ways.” The second award was presented in October 2019 to Kinsey’s Outdoors in Mount Joy, which makes archery supplies and outdoor gear. “(Kinsey’s) has embraced the mission of ODC and our goal of finding meaningful employment for individuals with developmental disabilities,” said Mueller, who added that Kinsey’s was ODC’s first small group employment site. “ODC individuals who work there alongside other employees have become a part of the Kinsey’s family,” said Mueller. “(ODC participants) love going out there.” The skill set of participants has been a good fit with Kinsey’s, where tasks include folding and packing items such as T-shirts, archery equipment, traps, and gloves. Gregg Richards, executive director of ODC, lauded the recipients of both awards. “I can’t say enough good things about them,” said Richards. “The awards are well deserved, and it’s wonderful
to have support from such good people,” he said, adding, “In the case of the Bowmans, they literally built the building.” Stoner founded ODC along with Marian Headrick in 1948. She remained an integral part of the organization into the early 1980s. “(Stoner) served on the board and was very active in what was being done (at ODC),” said Mueller. “She was a forwardthinking, proactive, and strong woman who really had a vision for ODC that was ahead of the times.” Stoner’s interest in founding ODC was tied to a nephew who had developmental disabilities and did not have many opportunities in the 1940s. “She didn’t like (his) options,” said Mueller. “Who we are (as an organization) today is based on her vision.” The Stoner Award is unique, so ODC sought an item to exemplify the Stoner vision by working with the glass blowers at the Stiegel Glassworks in Manheim. remarked Olson. Donations of gently used clothing for people of all ages, as well as shoes and accessories, may be dropped off at the church between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Mondays through Thursdays, with additional drop-off hours between 6 and 8 p.m. on Wednesdays. Items should be packed in bags marked by gender and size and placed in the large storage POD in the church parking lot. The last day to drop off donations will be Sunday, Jan. 19. Olson noted that the clothing giveaway and community meal
are a way not only to fulfill the call to serve and take care of others, but to put into practice the concept of reduce, reuse, and recycle. Members of the congregation support the event by donating clothing and baked goods, sorting and organizing clothing in preparation, and volunteering on the day of the event. In past years, approximately 350 people have attended. “We all pull together to help our brothers and sisters in Christ,” Olson stated. For more information, readers may call 717-653-4168.

Matmen Sit in Fourth Place in Section Two by Vaughn Brown
dealing with the loss of both Ethan Herr-a 2019 District qualifier-and Joe Fox to injury and had to give up three forfeits on the night. The Indians opened up an 18-10 advantage over the opening five bouts, but were only able to score six more points over the course of the match courtesy of Jansen Flohr who earned a fall 1:32 into his 113pound bout with Kyle Boyer to make it 28-24. Garden Spot then took advantage of Donegal’s final forfeit of the night at 120 and closed out the match with two falls, a tech fall, and two major decisions to seal the victory. After falling behind 6-0 with Drew Finkey’s opening pin at 152, Donegal’s Mason Ober quickly evened things up at 160 when he transitioned an early takedown into a fall at the 1:06 mark of the first period. A major decision by Alan Perez at 170 put the Spartans up 106, but subsequent falls by both Will Small (1:33) and Garrett Blake (1:14) gave Donegal an eight-point lead. From there Garden Spot regained the advantage and never looked back as they sandwiched Charles Martin’s fall at 285 with forfeits at 220 and 106. BOYS’ BASKETBALL Donegal’s Section Four woes continued last week as the Indians (0-7, 2-11) dropped two more League contests, falling to ELCO and Octorara with respective scores of 87-55 and 69-45. The Indians also traveled to New Oxford on Saturday where they lost to the Colonials 75-34. Mount Joy. Outscoring the Indians 66-43 over the final three, ELCO had three players in double digits with Asher Kemble (25), Braden Bohannon (21), and Bryce Coletti (12) leading the charge. Zuch was also an impressive 6-7 in free throws as Donegal shot 82 percent from the foul line while Luke Yunginger (6) drained two from long distance. Both Summers and Xavier Cannon (7) added one three-pointer apiece. Against Octorara on the road Friday night, it was Donegal with an early one-point lead to start things off, however, a drop in scoring over the second and third quarters doomed the Indians. With Summers (8), Levi Sites (7),
and Zuch (7) pacing the team, Donegal led 16-15 after one quarter of play, but had the tables turned as the Braves’ defense clamped down and held the visitors to 14 points over the next two. Conversely, Octorara pumped in 27 over the same span and despite a spirited effort by the Indians in the fourth were able to maintain a balanced offensive approach to thwart any attempt at a comeback. GIRLS’ BASKETBALL At the end of last week Donegal (3-4, 6-7) had three wins over four games in an effort to gain position in Section Four as the second half of the regular season grinds down. The Indians used a key, 65-62 win at ELCO (4-3, 7-7) on Thursday and a decisive, 69-16 victory at home over Octorara on Friday to
bolster those chances while Kiera Baughman’s stellar season continued as the senior ended the week with 1,557 career points. “I think it is important to note we are a young team with many things to learn,” stated head coach Thomas Baughman. “We definitely had our learning experiences in the first half of our season.” Dropping 30 points versus the Raiders, Baughman, along with Maddie Gohn who had 16, led the ladies in a furious 26-11 third quarter that put the Indians up 46-32 after trailing by one at halftime. They needed all that they could get as the Raiders opened up for a 30-point surge to end the game with the Indians holding on for the

She also added three from long distance while Catie Weber drained one trey to add to her nine points on the night. Victoria Burton had a big night in Friday’s matchup with Octorara as the sophomore drained a career high 20 points against the Braves and helped Donegal to a dominating win at home. Opening up a 24-6 lead after one quarter of play, the lady Indians held the
visitors to one point in both the second and fourth quarters while pouring on 46 of their own to finish out the game. Baughman (21) and Sophia Floyd (7) each drained one three point shot apiece and Madison Kaley (5) went 3-4 at the foul line to help the Indians in their victory. With momentum on their side, coach Baughman is optimistic on his team’s chances and what they can accomplish. “Now that we are headed into our section play, it will be interesting to see us implement the things we have learned. Our season is just getting started!”

The Lancaster School of Psychodrama and Experiential Psychotherapies will offer a fourpart series on trauma-informed care with experiential and creative arts methods. This quarterly series focuses on best practices for trauma-informed care, particularly the safe application of experiential therapies, including psychodrama, sociometry, Family Constellations, art making, and meditation. “Creating Safety and Connection: The Basics of TraumaInformed Care” will be offered on Friday, Jan. 31 (with a snow date of Friday, Feb. 7). “Creating Body Awareness: The Body Remembers W hat the Mind Forgets” will be presented on Friday, April 17. “Creating the Bigger Picture: Addressing and Healing Ancestral Trauma” will be offered on Friday, July 17, and “Creating Possibilities: Post-Traumatic Growth as a Reality” will be presented on Friday, Oct. 23. the school’s founder and one of the instructors of the series, trauma-informed care is an approach that acknowledges the effects of trauma, recognizes the impact of trauma on behavior, and responds in a manner that is supportive, encouraging, and empowering. Participants will learn how trauma-informed care is different than trauma treatment; a strength-based actionoriented model, adapted for a high level of safety and containment on multiple levels; how to deal with the reluctant or resistant client; how traumainformed care supports relapse prevention with addictions and eating disorders; how to safely incorporate experiential activities and creative arts therapies in trauma-informed care; and self-care as a route to nourish the professional and provide deeper care of client or patient. The series is intended for mental health professionals, educators, physicians, nurses, health care administrators, first
responders, creative arts therapists, alternative health practitioners, midwives, youth leaders, school counselors, human resources specialists, addictions professionals, and others interested in trauma-informed care. The instructors will be Carnabucci and Sharon Czabafy, both of whom have experience with trauma care and treatment, substance abuse and addictions, and experiential and expressive therapies. Classes are scheduled from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day, offering up to 24 CE credits for social workers, marriage and family therapists, and licensed counselors, plus psychodrama hours. Psychology and Act 48 credits are pending. An early bird discount will be available until Monday, Jan. 20. The fee includes handouts and healthy snacks. Twice a year, amateur radio operators - colloquially known as ham radio operators - set up their equipment out of doors and attempt to contact as many people around the globe as possible. “We’re practicing for emergencies,” explained Red Rose Repeater Association (RRRA) president Daniel Boone of Willow Street. “Disasters don’t know the seasons of the year.” Field days are 24-hour events in order to include amateur radio enthusiasts in all time zones, as well as to give individuals experience broadcasting during the day and night. The position of the sun impacts the distance radio waves travel, Boone said. “We have access to solar radiation reports,” Boone remarked. “The next thing you know, you’re talking to a guy in Israel on 5 watts.” “That’s like walkie-talkie
energy,” explained RRRA board member Doug Rice of Lancaster. “Most (easily accessible) radios are 100 watts.” Radio broadcasting is licensed by the FCC, and that includes amateur radio operators as well. “If somebody would like to get a license, we would like to help them,” said RRRA vice president Leon Hess of East Earl. Although the RRRA does not offer exam preparation, it does assist in offering the tests, and it will refer people to training classes in the region. The RRRA has many opportunities for those who become licensed. “For the exam, you use sponge memory. We don’t want to lose those people who get wrung out for the test,” Rice commented. “About half take the exam but never use it. When you start using the skills … (your knowledge) becomes more meaningful.” “It’s like getting your driver’s
members’ maritime belongings. Following the Norwegian tradition of hospitality, visitors are welcome and invited to share in the special dessert table. The Sons of Norway is a fraternal organization for those interested in the culture of Norway. The Bondelandet Lodge serves Berks, Cumberland, Dauphin, Lancaster, Lebanon, and York counties. The training, titled “Building Community in Lancaster,” was attended by many Excentia employees, as well as Vicki Bricker and several other guests from Lancaster County Behavioral Health and Development Services. The focus of the training was how to help people with disabilities to build natural

The author of several books relating to community and culture, he teaches at the University of Pittsburgh and works as a speaker and consultant. Real Estate Seminar Set Damien Sneed
Hamming It Up For Winter Field Day By Dayna M. Reidenouer
The Bondelandet Lodge, the local connection with Sons of Norway, will meet at 7 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 17, at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 301 St. Thomas Road, Lancaster. Foss founded Foss Maritime, now the largest maritime company on the West Coast. There will be a show and tell of Lodge
license and never using it,” Boone added. The RRRA leaders hope that newly licensed or inexperienced operators, as well as anyone with an interest in amateur radio, will participate in the Winter Field Day, which will be held from 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 25, to 2 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 26, at the Welsh Mountain Community Center, 564 Sandmine Road, New Holland. The event is sponsored by the Winter Field Day Association. The RRRA will have three stations set up, and licensed operators may use the equipment to contact other operators. Additionally, as part of its goal to welcome newcomers, several seminars will be offered during the event, and interested individuals may learn about safety and technical skills such as how to cut out interfering signals. Events like the Winter Field Day enable amateur radio operators to make connections without the pressure of a stressful situation. Being able to legally and comfortably operate a ham radio can open doors to friendship, an enjoyable hobby, and public service, Boone said, adding that ham radios can operate in areas where cellphones cannot. The RRRA used to drill for Three Mile Island
emergencies and still practices in case of an incident at the nuclear power plant in Peach Bottom. Two seconds after the first bomb was detonated at the Boston Marathon in 2013, the cellphone towers in a 20-mile radius were shut down. A network for 200 ham radio operators established communication between all the race checkpoints and the hospital. Several club members support endurance races in rural areas in Pennsylvania and New Jersey as well as the New York City Marathon, and Boone is regularly stationed at mile 15 of the marathon. “We’re there to watch the runners make sure they’re not ill, not falling down - and the crowds, that nobody is causing trouble,” Boone said. There is no cost to participate in or attend the Winter Field Day. Visitors are welcome to drop in at any time during the 24-hour event, and they may bring sleeping bags or cots if they plan to stay overnight. Registration is requested so the RRRA can plan to have enough food ready for guests, and readers may email Rice at W3COB@arrl.net or call Boone at 717-406-6382 to register. Additional information about the RRRA is available at www.w3rrr.org.

The field of senior care offers employment opportunities for people with a variety of skills and talents. The senior care industry includes many different positions that are vital to ensuring that senior living communities provide the best possible care for residents as they age. Representatives from the industry note that working in the field of senior care can be a rewarding career choice for individuals with a passion for helping the senior population. “One of the many perks (of working in senior care) is having the opportunity to be part of something bigger and having the opportunity each and every day to affect people’s lives in a positive way,” explained Kim Focht, director of human resources at Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community (QPRC), 625 Robert Fulton Highway, Quarryville. “Our residents are our primary focus,” noted Kelly Miller, director of sales and marketing
at Heatherwood Senior Living Community, 3180 Horseshoe Pike, Honey Brook. “This is their home, and they should be made to feel important and well cared for. Patience and understanding are key. Caring about how well our residents are treated is our main focus.” For Alicia Erdman, sales director for Legend Senior Living of Lititz, 80 W. Millport Road, something she enjoys about working in the senior care industry is the “satisfaction of knowing you were able to help a family and they no longer have to worry about their loved one’s overall safety.” Nurses are in high demand to fill various roles within senior care. Retirement communities offer positions for Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs), Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs), Registered Nurses (RNs), and Registered Nursing Assessment Coordinators. A license is required to work as an RN or LPN. A certification is needed to serve as a CNA,

but some senior care employers will help staff members obtain the certification. “We (at QPRC) do provide this education as well as pay our staff to get the education,” noted Focht. Personal care aides and medication technicians are also needed. A certification is required to serve as a med tech, with some employers providing and paying for the necessary training to staff members. “If you are serious, after 90 days (at Heatherwood), we will train and pay for the med tech certification, with the promise of a one-year employee commitment,” noted Miller. Other positions offered in the field of senior care include several roles within dining services for servers, cooks, dishwashers, prep cooks, dietary aides, and managers. Also needed are housekeepers, laundry aides and assistants, maintenance and renovations team members, activities aides, and receptionists. The field of senior care also includes home care professionals, who serve as caregivers, companions, and transportation providers to help seniors continue to live independently in their homes. Full-time, part-time, temporary, and PRN
Since 1969, Mt. Hope has had a legacy of caring and offers help and hope to the “least of these”. Regardless of a person’s finances and status, they see helping those in need as their mission. Our mission and ministry are to our employees as well as our residents. Values of love, respect, teamwork, mission, and a value of each individual are what make working at Mt. Hope special.
(as needed) employment opportunities are offered in the field of senior care. As facilities care for residents around the clock, employees are needed for all shifts. Nursing jobs offer a variety of options and flexibility, allowing for people craft a work schedule that fits with their current season of life and family obligations. No matter which position they are interested in, one key attribute for senior care jobseekers to exhibit is dependability. “We’re looking for someone who is reliable and shares a passion for seniors,” explained Erdman. Other representatives from the senior care industry noted that displaying some longevity on a resume, without a lot of job hopping, is also a plus for those looking to get hired. Focht added that employers also look for individuals who have the ability to work independently and as part of a team. Experience in the industry is preferred, but not required. “Bring a positive, team-like attitude, and we will train you,” noted Miller. “These careers require a desire to make a difference in people’s lives. They are both physically and emotionally demanding, and at the same time - endlessly rewarding,” said Focht.

The Backyard Fruit Growers (BYFG) will hold their annual winter meeting at Lancaster Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster, on Saturday, Jan. 18. The guest speakers will be Monticello’s Pat Brodowski and Swarthmore’s Jeff Jabco. As in past years, the event is free for BYFG subscribers and open to the public for a
suggested donation amount at the door. Brodowski will speak about the historic fruits, nuts, and vegetables of Monticello and how they relate to today’s fruit and vegetable gardeners. Jabco is director of grounds and coordinator of horticulture at the Scott Arboretum at Swarthmore College. Penn State Extension
will also present an update in the spotted lanternfly epidemic. The meeting will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with a break for lunch between the morning and afternoon sessions. Doors will open at 9 a.m., and coffee and refreshments will be offered, with freewill donations appreciated. For more information or updates in the case of severe weather,
readers may contact Andrew Weidman at 717-813-1874 or redbrickgarden@comcast.net or Timothy Elkner at tee2@psu.edu.
