Mount Joy Resident Traces Lineage Back To 1600s By Chelsea Peifer

Mount Joy resident Dr. James McCollum had always taken an interest in the McCollum side of his family’s lineage. But in 2018, an invitation to be part of a ceremony for the installation of a historical marker at the Kyle-McCollum House in Youngstown, Ohio, sparked a newfound interest in the Kyle line. The Kyle-McCollum homestead was completed in 1813 and became home to Joshua Kyle and his wife, who are McCollum’s great-great-great-grandparents. The couple’s daughter, Hannah Kyle, married Ira McCollum, and the pair inherited the home after

The homestead is currently owned by Phil (left) and Sylvia Imler.

Hannah’s parents passed away - establishing it as the McCollum house. Ira and Hannah had a son named Alexander, who later had a son named James, who is the grandfather of Dr. James McCollum of Mount Joy. “My father was also named James, and he lived (in the Kyle-McCollum House) too, during the Great Depression,” explained McCollum. For that reason, McCollum and his siblings were invited to speak at the building dedication in July 2018 as the descendants of some of the earliest pioneers to settle in Youngstown. “It is the oldest continuously occupied home in Youngstown,” noted McCollum. His ancestors sold the main home to an automobile dealer during the Great Depression, while maintaining ownership of a smaller house beside it.

Obituaries

McCollum from pg 1 “As I was preparing to say something (at the ceremony), I realized I’m also a Kyle descendent,” recalled McCollum. As he began to research, he learned that Joshua Kyle was a veteran of the War of 1812. Joshua’s father, John Kyle, was a captain in the Revolutionary War and had been born in - of all places Lancaster County. Although McCollum grew up in Youngstown, Ohio, and spent much of his adult life and career in Youngstown and Columbus, Ohio, he moved to Mount Joy in 2006 to serve as executive deputy to the president and chief of staff at Millersville University. He and his wife, Donna, have remained residents of Mount Joy since his retirement. Doing so turned out to be perfect as he further researched the Kyle family genealogy. McCollum discovered that John Kyle’s parents, Jean Bell and Samuel Kyle, are both buried in nearby Chambersburg. Samuel Kyle is the son of James Kyle, who was born in Ireland and married Susan Dixon, and the two are buried in the cemetery at the historic Donegal Presbyterian Church in Mount Joy. Upon realizing this,

McCollum contacted pastor Matt Randolph to learn more about the gravestones and cemetery, as well as the history of the church. According to McCollum, many of his ancestors were part of at least two major waves of Scotch-Irish settlers in the 1600s and 1700s before the United States was officially founded. Many McCollums journeyed from Scotland to what is now New Jersey before making their way slowly to Westmoreland County in Pennsylvania and later on to Ohio. A second wave included the “Ultra Scotch-Irish,” a group that McCollum explained had only lived in Ireland for one or two generations and would not allow themselves to be called Irish. Many of these settlers were Protestant Presbyterians seeking religious freedom who traveled through Philadelphia and into Lancaster. “For me it was this incredible experience. We lived most of our lives in Ohio, but here it is that we have generations of people we’re descendants of (who are) buried all over Lancaster County,” remarked McCollum.

Geography Bee from pg 1 National Geographic GeoBee. All DJHS students took a written exam to qualify for the competition, and a total of 24 seventh- and eighth-graders scored high enough to take part in preliminary rounds on Jan. 3. Former DJHS and Donegal High School social studies teacher Liz Lewis served as narrator for the geography bee. DJHS social studies teachers Trent Hoffmaster and Matt Pogue served as scorekeepers. The students took turns answering a constant rotation of questions in the library, while the rest of the student body watched a livestream of the competition from their classrooms. The preliminary rounds included the multiple-choice categories of State Savvy, State Stats, Weird But True, and Odd One Out. In addition, students had to name

the correct continent to answer questions designed to get contestants thinking about the locations of world rivers in the Source to Sea category. Once the scorekeepers tallied the number of correct answers for the first five rounds, it was announced that the following students had correctly answered every question they had been given and were eligible to go on to the championship round on Jan. 4: Delton Brixius, eighth grade; Jose Corona, eighth grade; Marie Gehman, seventh grade; Pierce Gohn, seventh grade; and Mark Overlander, seventh grade. At the end of the competition on Jan. 4, Delton was named the DJHS National Geographic GeoBee champion. Pierce came in second, and Marie earned third

Winners of the state bee qualify for the national competition set to take place on May 19 to 22, at the National Geographic Society headquarters in Washington, D.C. The 2019 national champion will receive a $25,000 college scholarship, $1,000 in cash, a lifetime membership to the National Geographic Society, and a trip to the Galapagos Islands. Registration for the National Geographic GeoBee is open to public and private schools and homeschool associations in the United States for students in grades four through eight. local restaurants, vendors, and purveyors serving the greater Elizabethtown area. Organizers Meghan Phillips and Aimee Nelson noted that several participating restaurateurs use the event to test out new recipes and food and beverage combinations that they may be considering adding to their menus or selection - giving attendees an exclusive sneak peek at what may be to come. Nelson said that this year’s event will feature some new vendors that organizers are excited about. However, plenty of fan favorites will be returning as well. “(A Taste of Western Lancaster County) has become such a tradition that we work to keep the elements that people look for - like having the giant Turkey Hill cow parked in front of the building,” shared Phillips. As attendees make their way through the library, they can vote for winners in various categories, such as Best in Show, Best Dessert, and Best Appetizer. “Our vendors really stretch themselves to do new things,” remarked Phillips.

Live music will be performed by local bands on two levels of the library. “People really enjoy staying and mingling and talking,” said Nelson. “I’m always amazed by how quickly the evening goes.” A Taste of Western Lancaster County has been coined “the Elizabethtown Reunion” by many of those who attend year after year. “It gives you the opportunity to see and connect with people from the community, plus you kind of get to put faces to the food from restaurants you go to,” Phillips said. “And you get to support two great community organizations.” Tickets may be purchased at the Elizabethtown Coffee Company, located in the library; from a Rotarian; or by visiting www.eventbrite.com and searching for “2019 Taste of Western Lancaster County.” Tickets are limited, and organizers encourage people to purchase early, as tickets to last year’s event sold out well in advance. To inquire about vendor and sponsorship opportunities at A Taste of Western Lancaster County, interested individuals may email admin@etownpubliclibrary.org or call the library at 717-367-7467.

neighborhoods as well as vacation Bible schools and Camp Good News at local churches. CEF of Lancaster County has 10 staff members and more than 300 volunteers serving in just about every school district in Lancaster County. The ministry has partnerships with more than 40 local churches. Its mission is to evangelize children with the Gospel of Jesus Christ, disciple children in their Christian faith, and connect children to local, Bible-believing churces. State Cultural and Historical Support Grants are now available for qualified museums and official county historical societies. This is the sixth year that the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PMHC) has worked with the state legislature to provide funding for museums through the grant program. A total of $2 million was included in the 2018-19 state budget for the initiative. The Cultural and Historical Support Grant program is restricted to eligible organizations that are not supported by other state agency funding programs, including museums located in Pennsylvania with annual operating budgets exceeding $100,000 and at least one full-time professional staff person. Some museums are not eligible if they are eligible for grant support from other state agencies. The maximum award for a museum is $65,000. In addition, official county historical societies are eligible to apply. The awards for Official County Historical Societies range from $2,500 to $4,000. Applicants must meet organizational eligibility requirements. Awards are based on a calculation that uses the operating budget from the most recently completed fiscal year. Applications must be received by Friday, Jan. 25. All PHMC grant applications are now submitted on the commonwealth’s Single Application for Assistance system at www.esa.dced.state.pa.us. Eligibility information and grant guidelines can be found at www.phmc.pa.gov.

In addition to the grants, the organization awards two $1,000 educational scholarships to graduating seniors each year. Lancaster County police departments and first responders joined together with Faulkner Chevrolet employees in November to support the Beards for Brothers campaign. Lancaster County police departments and first responders joined together in November to support Beards for Brothers. The campaign was organized by Officer Bill Watt of West Hempfield Township. Each year, officers select a first responder from the community currently battling cancer or an organization providing care to those battling cancer. This year’s Beards for Brothers campaign raised money for Officer Wendell Metzler of New Holland Borough Police Department, a 25-year veteran of law enforcement, a volunteer firefighter, and a emergency medical technician. In June, he was diagnosed with stage four melanoma. Metzler has undergone numerous radiation treatments and is currently receiving immunotherapy treatments to battle the disease. Faulkner Chevrolet employees also joined representatives from the departments, including Akron Borough, Columbia Borough, East Cocalico Township, East Hempfield Township, Elizabethtown Borough, Lititz Borough, Lancaster City, Lancaster County Park Rangers, Manheim Borough, Manor Township, Millersville University, New Holland Borough, Southern Regional, Strasburg Borough, West

Hempfield Township, West Lampeter Township, and Quarryville Borough, along with volunteer firefighters, EMS, and dispatchers from Lancaster County, joined to raise funds for Metzler and his family. For more details, readers may contact Eileen Culp at 717723-5240 or eculp@faulkner chevrolet.com.

Harold and Mary Keener of Mount Joy celebrated their 70th anniversary on Dec. 27 with family and friends at Elizabethtown Mennonite Church. After a time of food and fellowship, the couple’s children and their spouses, also with several great-grandchildren, presented musical selections. There was a time of sharing by family members, which included stories from childhood, reflections on the farm history leading into the Keener potato business, and acknowledgments of God’s faithfulness. They were married on Dec. 15, 1948, at Elizabethtown Mennonite Church by the Rev. Noah Risser. Mr. and Mrs. Keener are the

Indians Struggle Against Cocalico, Elco,Eastern by Vaughn Brown

What a difference a week makes. After knocking off Hempfield two weeks ago, the Donegal girls’ basketball team was 2-2 in Section Four and knocking on the door of first place. Seven days later the lady Indians were sitting in fourth after losing three in a row. In two of those three losses, Donegal was either winning or tied heading into the fourth quarter but could not eke out a victory. Cocalico represented the first matchup for the Indians with the Eagles coming away with a close four-point win at 47-43 and was followed by ELCO which also won by four, 63-59 and Eastern York which pulled away for a 54-43 victory. Fresh off a 17-point night against

Hempfield, in which she reached 1,000 for her career, Kiera Baughman joined Cheyenne Livelsberger in dropping 13 versus Cocalico on January, 4 in a game where the Indians led 24-22 at halftime. Madeline Gohn added a season high 10 points and was a perfect 4-4 at the foul line while the Eagles outscored the home team 25-19 in the second half for the win. Summer Steffy added five and Morgan Creek scored a field goal, but the Donegal defense surrendered 25 combined points to Shelby White (14) and Hannah Custer (11) while sending the Eagles to the line 21 times. Last Tuesday ELCO traveled to Mount Joy and rallied late to overcome a two-point Donegal lead at the end of three quarters, thanks in part

to a 22-point night by Ryell Shuey. With the Indians up 50-48, the ELCO defense clamped down and held Donegal to 11 points in the final frame while more than doubling up the Indians on offense with 23 to close things out. ELCO jumped out to a six-point lead to start the game, outscoring Donegal 19-13 in the first quarter, but saw that lead shrink to only two at halftime. Aided by Alex Daly whose season high 15 points, including three from beyond the arc, tied with Baughman for the team lead, Donegal made it 29-27 at the break. Two other Indian players hit double digits as well with Livelsberger dropping 12 and going 2-2 at the line while Steffy, who also drained a trio of three-pointers, chimed in with 11.

Coming out to start the second half, the Indians took the lead on a 21-11 run during the third quarter but eventually succumbed to the Raider’s offensive pressure. Gohn added four points to the effort along with Creek’s two. The third bump in the road for Donegal came in the form of the Golden Knights of Eastern York. In that Non-League contest last Wednesday in Mount Joy, the ladies again stumbled in the fourth quarter as Eastern York, fueled by Cassidy Arnold and Addison Malone each putting up 12 points on the night, pulled away from a 36-36 deadlock on the back of an 18-7 run to end the game. Donegal held a slight advantage early, leading 15-13 after one quarter of play, but saw the Golden Knights

grab a 28-26 lead just before the half. Baughman (17) and Livelsberger (10) both led the lady Indians with double digit scores from the floor with Baughman draining two three-pointers and going 5-6 at the line. A 10-8 run by the Indians in the third was good enough to tie the game, but the offensive pressure of the Golden Knights proved to be too much for Donegal to handle in the fourth. Steffy scored eight, while Gohn and Daly had four apiece with Gohn a perfect at the line at 2-2, both of which came in the first half. BOYS’ BASKETBALL Still looking for their first win of the season, the boys dropped two games as Donegal (0-6, 0-12) sat at the bottom of the standings after

Seven Indians’ players got in on the action against Cocalico with Ryan Zuch’s 14 points and two three-pointers leading the charge. Cocalico took an early 12-9 lead in the opening frame and never relinquished it as the Eagles went into the break ahead 20-17 and then used a 26-18 run in the second half, led by Conor Mack who drained three field goals, one trey, and was 5-6 at the line. Zuch put away Donegal’s only two from long range, but Reed Licopoli added eight including a perfect 2-2 on his free throws. Jacob Shoemaker added five and was 1-2 at the line, both Logan Nauman and Zion Gibbs scored two apiece, while Dalton Mullhausen and Joey Hess each had one

den Spot began showing signs of life that eventually turned into a one bout night at the 126-pound weight class where Josh Groff broke a 35-35 tie with a 34 second pin over Cooper Rollison to give the win to the home team, 41-35. Dylan Bowers began with a first period fall over Corey Leaman at 132 before Aaron Martin tied the match when he answered with a second period pin at 138 over Jeff Flores. The next five bouts belonged to Donegal, however as Joe Fox decisioned Alan Perez 6-4 at 145, Mason Ober majored Ethan Eberly 10-2 at 152, Garrett Blake majored Drew Finkey 12-2 at 160 and both Will Small and Cael Rapp recorded falls, respectively, at 170 and 182 making it 29-6 with seven bouts to go. Unfortunately, Donegal’s only win from that point on came from Ethan Herr who earned a fall over Jeremy Schilling at 106 pounds to make it 3524 after the Indians surrendered two falls and one forfeit in between. A Mason Casey fall over the Indian’s Jansen Flohr at 113 followed by a tech fall at 126 by Garrett Gehr over Taj Younger tied things at 3535 before Groff’s walk-off fall sealed it for the Spartans.

long range. The Raiders, however, also ran out to an early lead against the Indians and never looked back. ELCO led by as much as 12 points with a 36-24 lead heading into the fourth. They started out on a 22-18 run in the first half with help from Bryce Coletti’s game high 20 points while Donegal could not gain any traction offensively. The Indians only shot at 56 percent from the foul line going 9-16 as a team while Mullhausen added four points on the night, Gibbs had three, and Shoemaker, Patrick Summers, and Joe Turbedsky each added two in the losing effort. WRESTLING At 3-2 on the season, Donegal could only look up at the log jam that is the top of Section Two as Lampeter-Strasburg (4-0), Manheim Central (4-0), and Garden Spot (4-1) continued to vie for first place at the end of last week’s action. A heart breaking 41-35 loss to Garden Spot on Wednesday night in New Holland kept the Indians out of the lead pack, but still within striking distance. After winning six of the first seven bouts and opening up a 29-6 lead on the Spartans, the tides changed. Gar-

Spotted Lanternfly Quarantine Information Posted The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture is encouraging businesses to obtain the required spotted lanternfly permit to ensure they are complying with the spotted lanternfly quarantine orders. As the next phase of the spotted lanternfly life cycle gears up, now is an ideal time for businesses to learn how they can jumpstart this spring’s fight. There is no cost to businesses to obtain a permit. Under the law, businesses in Pennsylvania need to take the online permit training and exam and receive a permit for their vehicles. The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture continues its work to contain and minimize the spread of the spotted lanternfly while also keeping commerce flowing in Pennsylvania. In November 2017, 13 Pennsylvania counties - Berks, Bucks, Carbon, Chester, Delaware, Lancaster, Lebanon, Lehigh, Monroe, Montgomery, Northampton, Philadelphia, and Schuylkill were placed under quarantine to help stop the spread of the spotted lanternfly. States with spotted lanternfly populations are also required to follow the permit requirements for Pennsylvania. This will help prevent the movement of the pest from other states into Pennsylvania. The spotted lanternfly permit training teaches business owners, managers, and designated employees how to comply with the quarantine - an important legal designation to help stop the spread of spotted lanternfly - to ensure each

The quarantine order directs businesses, residents, and county authorities to follow guidelines to prevent the movement of the certain articles that contain any living stages of the spotted lanternfly, including egg masses, nymphs, and adults such as logs, stumps, or any tree parts; nursery stock; crated materials; and trucks or vehicles not stored indoors. By investing time and personnel to inspect vehicles to safeguard against transporting insects, people can help to ensure this pest does not reach farther beyond those counties that are already quarantined. As part of the spotted lanternfly quarantine agreement beginning on Wednesday, May 1, The Department’s Bureau of Plant Industry will begin to perform inspections and verification checks to confirm that businesses are properly permitted. The National Watch and Clock Museum, 514 Poplar St., Columbia, will host a TIMEtalks presentation from 11 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Jan. 19. The topic will be the Engle monumental clock. In the late 19th century, a short-lived type of clock - the monumental clock - enchanted the American public. Large, complicated, and painstakingly handcrafted, the clocks were made to awe and entertain. Between 1875 and 1900, more than two dozen of these clocks toured the United States and Europe. The first known monumental clock made in the U.S. was the Engle monumental clock, finished in 1878. Taking 20 years to complete and marketed as “the eighth wonder of the world,” it is 11 feet high, 8 feet wide, and 3 feet deep. The Engle clock indicates the day of the week, current month, phase of the moon, and current tides. It has three towers, two organ movements, and 48 moving figures that comprise a unique cast of biblical characters, a group of soldiers from the American Revolution, and others. The clock toured across the eastern U.S. for 70 years before disappearing. The Engle clock was later discovered in a barn. It is now fully restored and resides at the museum. The presentation will include a full history of the clock, its creator, and the restoration process and a full demonstration of the Engle clock with a thorough discussion of all its functions.
