The party serves a purpose more than just fun, Wivell said. “It’s important for seniors especially to get out and make connections in their community,” she explained. “This event offers multiple benefits to its attendees, from having an easy opportunity to speak in person to their local state representative to simply offering a great atmosphere to socialize, connect and also celebrate Valentine’s Day in a special way.” The Senior Sweetheart Tea is free, but reservations are required by Wednesday, Feb. 7. Founded in 1721, Donegal Presbyterian Church shares an ancestral heritage with a church in Rathneeny, Ireland. The “witness tree” that once stood on the grounds was the spot where church members met in 1777, when George Washington sent a message asking for men to muster and travel to Philadelphia for the Revolutionary War effort. The tree had to be cut down in 1991 due to disease, but
the congregation used its wood to make offering plates, bowls, bells and more, including the case on the church’s tracker organ. The concerts will be held in the fellowship hall of the church, and all concerts are 90 minutes long with an intermission. There is no admission fee, but a freewill offering will be received. For more information on the concerts, contact Ronning at ronnindd20@gmail.com.

Central Pennsylvania nonprofits are encouraged to apply to participate in Pennsylvania College of Art & Design’s 16th annual Designathon event, which provides branding and design work for free in a 12-hour marathon of creativity. The event is scheduled this year for Saturday, Feb. 10, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Held by the college’s student chapter of the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA) and headed by graphic arts department chair Maria Hostetter, the event benefits both area nonprofit organizations and the students who volunteer their time and talents. Organizations leave the event with a portfolio of professional-quality design elements, while students gain real-world experience in creating projects for clients with a tight deadline. Since the event’s founding, more than 150 nonprofit organizations have participated in Designathon. Each year, a collaboration of AIGA students and PCA&D students, alumni, and faculty members results in new logos, brochures, website assets, and other deliverables for nonprofit participants. home remained a private residence until 1909, when it became a sanitarium that administered rabies vaccines to children. In 1919, as World War I was ending, Mr. and Mrs. Henry S. Hiestand purchased the building and donated the house to the community of Marietta, dedicating it in the memory of their son, Lt. Benjamin Hiestand, who had died while serving in the military. Over the years, the building has housed an American Legion post, a public library, a well-baby clinic, a soup kitchen and the Pennsylvania School for the Arts, among other organizations. It now serves as a wedding and special event venue, with a focus on a variety of community events throughout the year, including an annual Veterans Day celebration and a garden tour. Garner invites anyone looking for a fun afternoon out to come to the tea. “It’s going to be a wonderful time to enjoy tea in a beautiful, historic house in Marietta,” she said. “You can spend time connecting with your friends and family over tea.”
