t’s a good thing Izzy Zellers doesn’t get stage fright. On New Year’s Day, the Donegal High School sophomore cheered in front of thousands of people in Camping World Stadium for the 2024 Cheez-It Citrus Bowl, a matchup between the top teams from the Southeastern and Big Ten college football conferences. Izzy participated as part of UCA All-American, a squad of cheerleaders from all over the country.

Celebrating Mardi Gras with pancakes, shrimp and grits Like many congregations, the members of St. Luke Episcopal Church in Mount Joy have noticed a decline in attendance to Sunday services. Hoping to remedy the problem and bring people into the church, they are bringing back their Mardi Gras Pancake Supper, with a twist. This year’s event will feature shrimp and grits in a nod to New Orleans. The supper will be served on Tuesday, Feb. 13, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the church, 209 S. Market St., Mount Joy. Members of the congregation at As in the past, pancakes will St. Luke Episcopal Church invite be served in three varieties: people to a Mardi Gras Pancake Supper. plain, blueberry and chocolate chip. “I can be loud when I’m cheering,” said Izzy, who cheers with Donegal’s team for fall and winter sports. “My personality in cheer is actually way different than my actual personality.” Izzy traveled to Florida with her parents a few days before the Monday afternoon game to spend time with her grandparents, who live in Tampa. Once she joined her All-American teammates, the students had opportunities to visit Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure before getting down to business. “The team got to practice on Friday night and Sunday morning,”

Izzy said, “but we used a practice field. We didn’t get on the actual field until we performed.” She received a video about a week before her trip to learn the three dance routines for the pregame show, but the group learned the halftime routine, a dance performed while Gavin DeGraw sang live, once arriving in Orlando. “I thought everything went very well for not having much time to learn the routines,” Izzy said. “I was worried about the pregame, because the dances were harder than the halftime one.” Luckily, however, she was in See Cheering pg 4

Take a Chocolate Walk through town BY CATHY MOLITORIS

On Friday, Feb. 23, and Saturday, Feb. 24, you should watch where you’re walking on Main Street in Mount Joy. Chances are, people will bump into you while they’re distracted by a box of sweet treats in their hands. A Chocolate Walk will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday and 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday. “It is a walkable event that spans around three blocks, and it’s a wonderful family event,” said Dave Schell, who is organizing

the event. “Yes, you can eat the chocolate while you are walking!” Tickets for the Chocolate Walk are an empty box, which participants will pick up at the St. Mark’s Ministr y Center, 37 E. Main St., Mount Joy. “They’ll receive a map with locations where you can get chocolate to fill up the box,” Schell explained. “Only people with boxes will be able to pick up the chocolate items.” The event will run along Main Street in Mount Joy from Beanie’s Bar & Grill to Harvey’s See Chocolate pg 3

“I just want to say how honored I was to be able to represent Donegal High School.” She was one of four members of her school team to try out for the squad, and while another girl also earned a spot, she decided not to participate further, so Izzy made the trip to Orlando, Fla., knowing no one on the team. “I’m not good with talking to new people, so I really had to push myself,” she said. “I had to really force myself just to meet other people.” She ’s proud of herself for stepping out of her comfort zone and making new friends, including a group of students from Tennessee. On the field, she can be found “flying” with her squad - doing elaborate jumps and sailing through the air, stunts that often scare her parents, Gabe and Shannon Zellers of Marietta. At the Citrus Bowl, however, she stayed on the ground, performing a pregame and a halftime routine among the 780 students selected for the team.

“We are currently hosting a men’s AA meeting and Girl Scout troops. We plan on running more events for the community. I am planning a craft show, art show, live concerts and other events, which will be open to the public. We would like to include as many of the downtown businesses as possible when we run some of these events.” He noted that the church also has a large parking lot, which could be used or rented for outdoor events, and he encourages people to contact him to set up community events. “How great would it be to have a huge town choir that has a yearly concert?” he mused. “Maybe a Mount Joy talent show?” In the meantime, he’s busy prepping for the Chocolate Walk, which has sold out in past years. “Your box will be filled with chocolate delights, and it is well worth the money for the box,” he said. “It’s a great way to introduce yourself to the businesses downtown that are participating in the

For 45 years, the members of St. Peter Catholic Church in Columbia have been offering Lenten Fish Frys to the community. “The event is a tradition in our parish,” said Claire Storm, fish fry committee member. “It was started by our parents and handed down, so now a younger generation has taken over and the tradition continues.” This year’s Lenten Fish Fry will begin on Friday, Feb. 16, and will continue on Fridays through March 22. The event is open to the public, and dine-in

and takeout options will be available from 4 to 6:30 p.m. in the Parish Center, Second and Union streets, Columbia. The menu will include platters of one or two crab cakes, baked haddock, fried fillet of fish, fried shrimp, fish sticks, fried scallops, fried oysters or breaded fried clam strips. Macaroni and cheese, french fries, stewed tomatoes, a vegetable, coleslaw and a dinner roll are included in the price of the platter. A la carte items include a crab cake sandwich, a fried fish fillet sandwich, an oyster sandwich, french fries, macaroni and cheese,

Donegal

stewed tomatoes, coleslaw and cheesy bread sticks with marinara sauce. Quarts, pints and bowls of homemade soups will be available each week as well. On Feb. 16 and March 8, potato soup will be served. On Feb. 23, minestrone will be featured, and on March 1, cream of crab will be on the menu. Cheesy broccoli will be offered on March 15, and Maryland crab will be served on March 22. A variety of individually wrapped baked goods made by the women of the parish will also be available for purchase each Friday as well as a variety of drinks. As Storm explained, the fish fry tradition began at the church as a way to honor a Catholic dietary restr iction dur ing the season of Lent.

“Jesus died on Good Friday, so Catholics and other religions refrain from eating meat in His honor on Fridays. It is a form of penance,” she explained. “The tradition is to abstain from meat, not necessarily to eat fish.” The fish fry is a fundraiser for the Parish Council of Catholic Women, Storm said, noting that proceeds will benefit various activities in the parish, Our Lady of the Angels Catholic School, Water for Life and other nonprofits. Congregation members begin prepping each meal the day before, making crab cakes and setting up, Storm remarked. The men of the parish assist with the setup, cleanup, heavy See Fish fry pg 7

will help to serve the meal. Dog treats will be available to purchase separately for four-legged family members left at home during the event. There are separate prices for adults and children ages 5 to 12, and the meal is free for children under age 5, said Lynn McCleary, senior warden. “We chose to make the meal affordable so families can come out and enjoy the event,” she stated, “but this is a fundraiser offering beautifully filled Longaberger baskets.” As people enjoy the meal and peruse the baskets, which will be available via giveaway drawings, New Orleans jazz music will add to the atmosphere, McCleary said. Holding the event on the Tuesday before the beginning of Lent is intentional, she noted. “Shrove Tuesday is a Christian fe s t i va l ce l eb rate d i n

many countries across the globe,” she explained. “Shrove Tuesday is when the larders are emptied of baking supplies, as during Lent, Christians give up luxur ies to remember when Jesus went into the desert for 40 days to fast and pray.” McClear y added that people in other countries mark the date with their own celebrations . “In Germany, for example, it ’s calle d ‘Fastnacht ’ - meaning ‘Eve of the Fast’ - and in Iceland it’s called ‘Sprengidagur’ meaning ‘Bursting Day,’” she shared. “In France and some other parts of the world, the festival is called ‘Mardi Gras’ from the French phrase meaning ‘Fat Tuesday.’ And for many people, Mardi Gras means party time!” She hopes that people will bring that spirit to the meal at St. Luke. “Saint

Luke Episcopal Church is a small congregation of fun-loving people who welcome ever yone, no exceptions, with open arms and warm hearts,” she commented. “During the Mardi Gras celebration, tours of the historic church building will be offered, as well as private prayer for those in need, by the Rev. Martha Harris.” Church parking is available on the street, and there is an elevator for easy access to both the social hall and the sanctuar y. Tickets for the meal may be ordered by calling or texting Gail Fridy at 717-538-0810. A few tickets will be available at the door as well. For more information on community events and worship oppor tunities at the church, search for “St. Luke’s Episcopal Church (Mt. Joy, PA)” on Facebook.

Church sets holiday activities from Feb. 21 to March 20. At noon in the worship space, the church will host a 30-minute prayer service including a homily on the theme of “Lament.” The homilies will explore the ways and times that believers through the ages have contended with grief,

sorrow and suffering. The services will address the question “Where is God in the midst of hard times?” After the service, those who are able may enjoy lunch in the social hall. The church will offer two soup options, one of which is vegetarian.

MUSSER’S TREE SERVICE

The volunteers at Mastersonville Fire Company are on a mission. “ We have a heart for helping,” said Jeff Siegrist, assistant chief, who has served the organization for more than two decades. “That’s the reason all of us are here.” Adds Kyle Peters, also a 20-plus-year veteran who serves as fire chief, “And that’s certainly why we stay.” The all-volunteer nonprofit fire department, located at 2121 Meadow View Road, Manheim, provides service to residents in parts of Rapho and Mount Joy townships. “We handle everything from vehicle accidents to house fires to barn fires

to somebody that falls out of a tree to residential f looding,” stated Butch Montgomery, deputy fire chief. Any type of 911 call other than a police call is addressed by the station, including water rescues and medical calls. Like many fire stations, however, Mastersonville needs help. “We’re looking for volunteers in all areas,” said Mark Duttera, company president. He emphasized that he is a “non-firefighting president” and noted that help is needed to go out in the field on calls but also to take on administrative tasks in the office. That’s what Mark and his family members do. His wife, Sara, is the station’s secretary. Son Zac is the assistant treasurer, and

daughter Lexie is an unofficial volunteer. “I’m here for one reason and one reason only - to help them where I can,” Mark said, gesturing to his peers who answer the calls. “I have no desire to fight fires.” Lori Shenk, who began volunteering with the station 35 years ago with her now-husband, Matt, said there is a volunteer opportunity for everyone. “If we could have members that would just show up at the end of a call and help us clean up the equipment or wash the bay floor, that would be a huge help,” she said. “We need landscaping help. We have a lot of opportunities to help in different ways.” Training is offered every Monday evening, providing everything members need to answer calls, Lori said. The station has been ser ving the community for 75 years, and although it participates in a federal grant program that helps with some funding, it relies on donations and fundraisers to operate. A chicken barbecue is typically held in the spring as is a community breakfast,

but the station’s biggest fundraiser is its pig roast, held in November. This past year’s event, however, did not go as smoothly as planned. The volunteers underscored their apologies to anyone who was disappointed when the food ran out after less than 90 minutes, noting that the event was the “perfect storm” of beautiful weather and a great turnout. Duttera emphasized that steps are being taken to fix the problem going forward, stating, “We never intended to miss the mark on this. We were as upset as the public was, and we are doing everything we can to make sure this doesn’t happen again.” Whether they are serving food to the community or fighting a fire, the volunteers at Mastersonville Fire Company care about others, Siegrist stated. “When you go out on a call, you meet people at the worst time of their life,” he said. “And you’re able to make that situation better for them. That’s everlasting for some people.” To learn more about how to volunteer, visit the station or call 717-665-5192.
