Library Will Celebrate Dr. Seuss BY CATHY MOLITORIS

ilanof-Schock Library will mark the birthday of Dr. Seuss with a special event on Friday, March 5. “Celebrate Seuss - A Library Adventure” will run from 5 to 7 p.m. at the library, 1184 Anderson Ferry Road, Mount Joy. “Usually, we would do a green eggs and ham breakfast, but we didn’t want to serve food during the pandemic, so we were trying to think of a way to still celebrate Dr. Seuss,” said Jan Betty, director of children and youth. “We came up with this fun way to mark his birthday.” The event will feature a walkthrough of the library with opportunities to visit different activity stations. “We’re doing our best to make all of them hands-off,” Betty noted. “We’ll have people travel in family groups, so when

you buy your ticket, you’ll reserve a certain time to make sure we don’t have too many people in the library at once.” In addition to the activity stations, the event will include costume characters such as the Cat in the Hat, the Grinch, Thing 1 and Thing 2, Gertrude McFuzz and the Fox from “Fox in Socks.”

“We are all about our patrons, and we’ll do anything we can to provide them with activities and reasons to get out of the house.” “People are encouraged to bring their cameras or take pictures with their phones,” Betty stated. “We’ll have games, activities and prizes, plus a goodie bag for each

Drive-Through Meal To Benefit Retirement Community

St. Mark’s To Hold Ash Wednesday Events BY CATHY MOLITORIS

On Saturday, Feb. 27, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Mount Hope Nazarene Retirement Community will offer a curbside pickup meal as a fundraiser for the residence. The pickup will take place at the LCBC Manheim Campus, 2392 Mount Joy Road. The snow date for the event will be Saturday, March 6.

Thinking outside the box (or the church), St. Mark’s United Methodist Church will offer outdoor distribution of ashes on Ash Wednesday, Feb. 17. The church, located at 27 E. Main St., Mount Joy, will provide ashes for anyone who wants to receive them, said pastor Helen Adams. “We’re planning to offer three one-hour blocks (for distribution),” she shared. Ashes will be distributed from 1 to 2 p.m. and 6 to 7 p.m. in the rear of the church.

The library’s Dr. Seuss celebration, which has been held for more than 30 years, has always been very popular. “You need to come into the library to purchase your tickets, and in the past, we’ve sold out,” Betty said. Ticket sales began on Feb. 8. Proceeds from the event help fund children’s programs at the library, Betty noted, adding, “It’s going to be a lot of fun. It’s fun for the whole family.” Although the event had to look a little different this year, it was still important to the library staff that it happened in some form or another. “We are all about our patrons, and we’ll do anything we can to provide them with activities and reasons to get out of the house,” Betty stated. “We want them back in the library when they feel comfortable. We want them to know we’re still here for them.”

“Less Snore, More Cuddle” Are you having trouble sleeping in 2021? If so, please... Take This Reader’s Quiz: 1. Do you snore at night, or sleep with someone who does? 2. Do you wake up with pain in your back or neck? 3. Do you share a bed with someone who wants a firmer or softer mattress than you? 4. Do you wish you could wake up more refreshed and full of energy? If you answered “Yes” twice or more, this story is for you.

Introducing “Less Snore, More Cuddle™” Sleep Systems The only sleep systems that provide a Cuddle Zone in the middle, while raising or lowering head or feet sections. This solves common health problems for couples who sleep together. Here are some of the healthy benefits:

The Snoring Solution Did you know that astronauts don’t snore in space? Snoring is made worse by gravity’s effect on the throat, which narrows the airway. For this reason, snoring can be cured by sleeping in zero gravity -- or on an adjustable Cuddle Zone sleep system to elevate you head.

Stop Compromising Your Sleep If you wish you half of the bed was firmer or softer, a Cuddle Zone system can help. With “His & Her” custom-fit technology, you get a firmness that’s just right for each of you, you keep the Cuddle Zone.

Back and Neck Pain, Gone Sleeping without pain requires body support and spinal alignment. Unlike “firm or soft” mattresses, Cuddle Zone systems support the spine and neck with 2 to 4 comfort layers.

More Energy, More Life Cuddle Zone systems help give you deep, restorative sleep. Your muscles repair and grow, and your brain flushes out toxins. You wake up refreshed and energized.

Budget Bed or Sleep System? Why visit a local store when you can shop online? Because we don’t sell budget beds. We offer sleep systems, combining mattress, adjustable base and pillow. Each fitted to your needs. You can even experience any sleep system in our Dream Room. No website does that.

And those “unbiased” mattress review websites? They’re often owned by huge, private equity firms. But we’re not a faceless company. We’re locally owned in Lancaster. When you shop here, you support the community.

Now Explore Your Options At Gardner’s Mattress & More, we’ve curated over 24 Cuddle Zone sleep systems for you to see in person, 7 days a week. Private appointments are available. People enjoy our shopping experience, in part because there’s no sales pressure ever. And we have over 200 verified stories of customer delight for your review. As a reader, you may bring the coupon below to Gardner’s Mattress & More and claim your Free Gifts before the March 2 deadline.

FREE READER’S GIFTS As a reader of The Merchandisers & Advertisers, you are entitled to 4 Free Gifts. library on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays during the library’s operating hours. Milanof-Schock Library will celebrate Dr. Seuss’ birthday a little differently this year. Instead of a green eggs and ham breakfast, a familyfriendly event called “Celebrate Seuss - a Library Adventure!” will be held on Friday, March 5, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Tickets for the fundraising event will include a pass through the maze, hands-free games, activities, prizes, and a goodie bag for each child. Each person will also receive a chance to win a variety of prizes, including gift cards for Gus’s Keystone Family Restaurant. Not only will proceeds from the meal help seniors continue to stay at Mount Hope, but the money will also cover additional expenses. “It helps with the purchasing of personal protective equipment, covering unforeseen expenses in additional building and cleaning supplies, easing the financial shortfall from reduced revenue, providing for unexpected costs as staff is needed to fulfill roles once held by volunteers and acquiring technology to combat residents’ social isolation and provide a positive family connection,” Wilson explained. Preorders will be taken for meals until Wednesday, Feb. 17. Extra meals will be available on the day of the event while supplies last. The cost of the meal is $16, and no handling of money will take place at the pickup. Instead, payment may be left in a drop-box in the form of exact change or a check made payable to Mount Hope Nazarene Retirement Community. To reserve a meal, readers may call Wilson at 717-682-8026 or email advancement@mthopenazarene.org.

The meal includes chicken from Peters’ Barbecue, gourmet cheese potatoes, sweet and sour saucy green beans, applesauce, a dinner roll with butter and dessert. Proceeds will benefit the facility, which provides skilled nursing and rehabilitation care for seniors regardless of their ability to pay. “With a passion to serve seniors with lower incomes, Mount Hope is home to 50 residents who need nursing care,” said Kris Wilson, director of advancement. “Most seniors at Mount Hope do not have financial resources to cover the cost of their care. A gap of approximately $150 exists between what a senior is able to pay and the cost of their daily care.” The drive-through meal provides a way not only to support seniors, but also to serve a warm meal in a dreary season, Wilson noted. “Mount Hope has not done a large banquet-type drive-through meal before this, but I thought up the idea because winter tends to be very cold and gray - the ‘winter blues’ - and people might not feel totally comfortable yet with going out to a restaurant for dining,” she explained. “This is a safe option and a nice way to help support a local nonprofit and of course enjoy some wonderful home-cooked Lancaster County comfort food on a cold winter day.” This year has been particularly difficult on residents of Mount Hope, Wilson remarked, adding that the retirement community continues to look for creative ways to cover the unanticipated increased cost of safely providing care.

unique challenges, the church wanted to keep its traditional Ash Wednesday observation, Adams stated. “Ash Wednesday is important because it’s the beginning of Lent, which is one of the two biggest seasons of the church year, she remarked. “We wanted to give people the opportunity to have a communal experience as they begin the Lenten season. Adams noted that all activities will follow COVID-19 protocols, with social distancing and mask wearing, as well as glove use for anyone making physical contact with the public. Along with distribution at the church, St. Mark’s will record a brief Ash Wednesday service of Imposition of Ashes and post it online to its YouTube channel, Facebook page and website, Adams noted. “We are (also) planning to distribute small containers of ashes to homebound members who might not be able to get to the drive-through service, so they can participate by marking themselves with ashes at home as they watch the service, she said, noting that the church has been finding unique ways to connect with parishioners over the past year. “We had already arranged to get DVDs of our recorded services to people who don’t have internet capability - and some portable DVD players to those who don’t have DVD players either so as many people as possible have access to worship while we are not meeting together. For Ash Wednesday, Adams encourages anyone to come out to receive ashes and Communion, adding that the distribution offers a way for the church to connect to the public and provide solace in a particularly difficult time. “Isolation has been such a problem for people throughout the pandemic, she stated. “Any opportunity we have to safely offer some connection, we want to do that.
