LMHS To Present “Bye Bye Birdie” pg 5
By Dayna M. Reidenouer
In a twist of irony, Susquehanna Stage’s first production in its new, permanent space at the Marietta Center for the Arts, 133 W. Market St., Marietta, takes place in a rented room. “Plaza Suite,” a comedy by Neil Simon, features four couples in three acts, each during their time in Suite 719 at New York City’s Plaza Hotel. “The last 10 years we had been in a rented space,” said Susquehanna Stage artistic director Jim Johnson. “We wanted our own space.” The play will be performed on the Gallery Stage of the new venue, which originally served as a house of worship. Marietta Center of the Arts, the umbrella organization under which Susquehanna Stage operates, purchased the building in August 2018. Guests attending “Plaza Suite” and the other
five shows planned this year may park at the rear of the building and on the streets around it. Due to the age of the building, the facility is not handicapped-accessible. Folks with special needs are invited to contact the box office at 717-426-1277 or tmoore@ susquehannastageco.com, and the theater staff will make every effort to provide accommodations. “Plaza Suite” will open on Friday, Feb. 15, at 7:30 p.m. Additional evening performances will be offered at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 21; Friday, Feb. 22; and Saturdays, Feb. 16 and 23. Matinees will begin at 2 p.m. on Sundays, Feb. 17 and 24. The theme of the production is couples and relationships, Johnson said. The three stories are connected only through the theme and the setting. There is a married couple whose anniversary celebration is interrupted See Susquehanna Stage pg 8

friends who shared the vision to form a board and incorporate as a nonprofit organization. In May 2015, LifeCycles held its first ride. The organization now rides more than 50 times per year. “We have now traveled more than 77,000 miles together,” noted Deremer. “That’s three times around the planet without injury.” From the middle of April until early September, the group meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays in outdoor locations in Columbia and Lancaster for about 90 minutes. “We have a welcome and a message, and we stretch,” said Deremer. “We ride about an hour and then we sit down for a hot meal.” All meals are donated by people who support the vision of LifeCycles. A New Holland branch of LifeCycles rides from Garden Spot Village on Wednesday evenings from April through November. Since the organization is now in its fifth year, some of the participants are now looking forward to getting a driver’s license,

could bring some resources together and do something.” Deremer was specifically concerned about boys between the ages of 12 and 18 who did not have a positive male role model in their lives. “It’s hard enough growing into an adult today,” said Deremer, adding that it is increasingly difficult without a mentor to provide guidance about how to get there. Deremer and his wife began to pray about how to proceed. “(We knew) if we did this we needed to step out in faith,” Deremer explained. “We needed to find people who shared the vision of mentoring boys in a God-honoring environment (to) give them the opportunity to grow into the young men they were created to be.” In 2014, the couple took their vision to Community Fellowship Church in Lancaster, where they met with the pastors and director of community groups. “They were supportive and asked us to bring it to the mission group,” said Deremer, who also gathered

Deremer uses the map to create a fictional trip for each boy. “From Lancaster to State College (equals) 160 miles of riding,” explained Deremer. “(Some boys) go as far as Fargo, North Dakota, or Miami,” Deremer is especially proud of one participant who is slated to eclipse 4,000 miles when the group starts holding regular rides again in the spring. “(That young man has) gone through Texas and Mexico to the border of Panama,” said a smiling Deremer. LifeCycles is a bicycle ministry associated with Community Fellowship Church and overseen by Deremer and his wife, Marcie. The program mentors boys from the greater Lancaster area in a bicycle touring environment. All equipment is provided to the boys free of charge. Deremer said that he began LifeCycles in 2014 when he reached a point of frustration seeing young men “derailed” by their circumstances. “I could no longer stand on the sidelines,” said Deremer. “I had to see if I

They have questions to work through, and we are thrilled to engage with them.” Deremer is especially excited about an upcoming fundraiser for LifeCycles. On Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 7 and 8, a number of experienced adult riders will take part in the Do Hard Things Challenge Ride, which will begin at the Pennsylvania and New York state line, near Elmira, N.Y. “We will ride (through the night) from there to Williamsport and then all along the Susquehanna River to Wrightsville,” said Deremer, who explained that riders will raise funds through sponsorships. Lancaster Mennonite School, Kraybill Announce Agreement After 12 years of recent shared ownership, Lancaster Mennonite School (LMS) and Kraybill Mennonite School have announced a new beginning. Both parties signed an agreement on Nov. 9, 2018, stating that Kraybill Mennonite School will become fully independent again beginning on Monday, July 1, 2019. Kraybill Mennonite and LMS have a 40year history of working together, at points independently and at other times jointly. Kraybill Mennonite School sought independent status in March 2018 after LMS shared the need to combine grade levels or close the campus due to decreased enrollment. The Kraybill community united in support of continued operation of the school and its mission. Desiring a Mennonite school in the Mount Joy area to continue, LMS agreed to another year in partnership, culminating with fully independent status for Kraybill for the 2019-20 academic year. “Lancaster Mennonite is pleased to see the Kraybill community rally to ensure Mennonite education continues in Mount Joy,” said Pam Tieszen, LMS superintendent. “It is clear that the transition team is as dedicated as LMS to see our mission continue. It is only with renewed community and family support that our schools are able to effectively (serve) students.” Kraybill Mennonite School continues to offer faith-integrated academic programs, and it has announced a decrease in its tuition rate, according to Kraybill school board chair Mark Graybill. He added, “Course offerings have been strengthened and changes have prompted a strong enrollment response.”

Mount Joy Society To Offer Dance Classes Rotary Welcomes Speakers At its Jan. 15 meeting, held at The Gathering Place in Mount Joy, the Rotary Club of Mount Joy welcomed several international guests. The guest speaker, Bianca Neff, discussed the Rotary Peace Fellowship. Neff is a 2010-11 Peace Fellowship recipient who is attending University of Bradford in Bradford, the United Kingdom, to earn her Rotary-sponsored master’s degree in conflict resolution. Throughout the world, there are six Rotary Peace Centers, which have had 1,200 graduates since 2002. Graduates are in strategic positions of leadership around the globe providing peacebuilding services. Neff founded an organization dedicated to providing mental health services to NGO workers who have experienced job-related trauma and stress. Neff, the daughter of a Basque mother (Spain) and an American father, now lives in Spain. Her Basque heritage gives her a perspective of what it means to be a minority working through issues of ethnic conflict. Having been active in global humanitarian work for more than 15 years, she has lived in Kyrgyzstan, Morocco, Spain, and Kenya. The club also received an update from Freddy Tuyizere. Tuyizere, from Burundi, Africa, spoke about a water distribution project developed by the boys at his school for street children. The Burundi project has been one of special interest for the Rotary Club during the past two years. With Tuyizere was Keren Korineza, a graduate of his school in Burundi who is currently attending college in the United States. For more details, readers may visit the Mount Joy Rotary Club ’s Facebook page. Individuals who are interested in being guests at either the Tuesday noon or Thursday evening meetings may call Mark Rorabaugh at 717-653-4717 or email mountjoypres@gmail.com.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL First up for the ladies was a It was a familiar ending to the regular season for the boys’ basketball team as they dropped their final three games to remain winless for the year. Beginning with Lancaster Catholic on Friday, February 1, in which they lost 60-39, Donegal suffered a 53-43 defeat at the hands of Octorara, and then last Tuesday lost to Northern Lebanon 45-41. Lancaster Catholic opened up a huge 32-17 advantage by the end of the second quarter and never looked back as the Indians, led by Ryan Zuch’s 14 points, were held in check for most of the night. Following a 16-3 advantage by Octorara in the first quarter of their matchup last Monday, both teams played fairly evenly throughout the remainder of the game. Donegal matched the Braves nearly point for point as each side scored 12 in the second and 13 in the fourth with the Indians holding a slight 15-12 advantage in the third. Jacob Shoemaker put up 10 points, Logan Nauman had eight, Reed Licopoli accounted for six and both Dalton Mullhausen and Patrick Summers netted three. In the closest game of the three, Northern Lebanon withstood a 22-point barrage by the Indians to start the third and then played to a 19-11 advantage in the fourth to secure the four-point victory. matchup with the Lancaster Catholic Crusaders on Friday, February 1 who clinched their 22nd section championship with a 79-57 victory. Kiera Baughman dropped 23 points for the Indians, as did Lancaster Catholic star Kiki Jefferson, and was joined by Summer Steffy (15) and Cheyenne Livelsberger (10) in pacing the Indians. A seven-point second quarter did Donegal no favors as the Crusaders led by 11 after one and went into the locker room with a 45-17 lead at the break. Despite a steady offensive attack by the section champs, Donegal
was able to battle back in the second half, namely in the fourth quarter where the Indians staged a furious comeback bid, outscoring the Crusaders 26-14, but it was too little too late for the host tribe. Steffy drained three treys for Donegal while Baughman nailed two and was 5-9 at the line. Madeline Gohn added five for the Indians, Alexandra Daly scored two and both Morgan Creek and Reign Medina had one each as well. Hosting Octorara last Monday, after weather caused the matchup to be postponed twice, Donegal defeated the outmatched Braves 80-12 and dropped them to 0-18 for the season. After opening up a 22-2 lead in the first quarter, Donegal racked up 31 points in the second frame for an insurmountable 48-point lead at the break. Led by Baughman (23), Steffy (20), and Livelsberger (14), the Indians had eight players contribute on the night. Gohn scored seven, Creek had six, both Medina and Daly tallied four, and Lydia DeBruin put up two. While only ten points separated Donegal and Northern Lebanon in last

bouts, but the Golden Mules slowly inched their way back with four decisions, a forfeit, and a fall over the next five to take the lead, 24-18, and finished out by winning three of the final four. In a pivotal bout at 106 pounds, with Solanco trailing by only three, Donegal’s Ethan Herr battled Dominic Flatt for six minutes with the two trading escapes to end regulation tied at 1-1. In overtime it was Flatt who secured a two-point takedown for the 3-1 victory that tied the match at 18-18. A Jackson Houghton pin over Donegal’s Jansen Flohr at 113 put the Mules in the lead, but a Taj Younger victory by forfeit at 120 tied things up
again at 24-24. From there Solanco racked up a technical fall and two pins to lead 41-24 before Joseph Fox ended the match with a 38 second fall over Clint Herr at 145. Mason Ober (152) and Cael Rapp (170) sandwiched a Garrett Blake forfeit at 160 with pins to begin the night, giving Donegal its 18-point early advantage. Ober was leading 4-1 after the first period of the opening bout before reversing Donovan Myers to start the second and putting him to his back for the fall at 2:23. Rapp followed Blake’s forfeit by turning an early takedown into a fall in 1:17 for the 18-0 lead before Solanco began to take over the match.

LMHS from pg 1 By Ann Mead Ash
Director Dean Sauder considered a number of plays before settling on “Bye Bye Birdie” for the Lancaster Mennonite High School (LMHS) spring musical. Sauder noted that one reason for selecting the show was to contrast 2018’s “Wizard of Oz” production. “We are intentional about choosing shows from different eras to help give our students a rounded theater experience,” said Sauder. LMHS will present “Bye Bye Birdie” in the LMHS Fine Arts Center, 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 28; Friday, March 1; and Saturday, March 2. A matinee performance will be held at 2 p.m. on March 2. “Birdie” is the story of Conrad Birdie, played by Noah Schnabel. W hen Birdie, a singer and teenage heartthrob, is drafted into the Army, his agent, Albert Peterson, played by Javon Thomas, and Peterson’s secretary and love interest, Rosie Alvarez, played by Kathleen
Calix-Alvarado, concoct a scheme to turn the situation into a publicity coup by planning to have Birdie sing one final song to a female member of his fan club, accompanied by a “last kiss.” The song and subsequent pucker are to take place on “The Ed Sullivan Show.” Enter teenager Kim MacAfee, played by Willa Beidler, who wins the competition. Kim’s parents, Harry MacAfee, portrayed by Isaac Harnish, and Doris MacAfee, played by Mikayla Beers, are not exactly thrilled at the prospect of their daughter kissing a rock ‘n’ roll star. “Birdie,” which is based loosely on Elvis Presley’s induction into the Army, is set in the late 1950s. While the story of Conrad and Kim plays out, Rosie is struggling to move forward in her relationship with Albert. The pair is impeded by Albert’s mother, Mae, played by Merry Yirga, who dislikes Rosie and continually takes steps to thwart the relationship. “It’s a challenge as Rosie to stay
strong,” said Calix-Alvarado of her role. “She does show her sensitive spots.” Sauder noted that the role of Rosie stands out in the show for a number of reasons. “Even as Albert keeps folding … and she’s being picked on by her future mother-in-law, she rises above it, and in the end she triumphs,” said Sauder. “There are not many shows from this era that have a woman (character) with that strength.” Beidler pointed out that performing from a script written for a different era can be a challenge. “We’re doing a show set in the 1950s in 2019,” she said. “There are a lot of things said in the show that you cannot say now.” Sauder agreed, noting that gender roles that were assumed during that time period have changed drastically. The show is known for catchy tunes, and the cast members are looking forward to presenting the songs with dances choreographed by Katie Sina-Kindig. Students mention “Put on a Happy Face,” “Honestly Sincere,”
“The Telephone Hour,” and “A Lot of Livin’ to Do” as standout numbers. Schnabel noted that he hopes to see audiences enjoying the show. “With a musical like ‘Bye Bye Birdie,’ (you can) a bring your (children) and parents (because it’s) fun for the whole family,” he said, adding, “It’s fun for the cast (too).” Advance tickets for the play may be purchased at www .lancastermennonite.org under the Fine Arts tab or by calling 717-740-2456 or emailing box office@lancastermennonite.org. A discounted student price will be offered, and tickets to the matinee performance will also be discounted. Pictured on front: Kathleen Calix-Alvarado (left) will play Rosie opposite Javon Thomas (right) as Albert Peterson in the upcoming Lancaster Mennonite High School spring musical, “Bye Bye Birdie,” which will be presented at the school on Feb. 28 and March 1 and 2.

LCCS Hosts Society Meeting gathered to celebrate the contributions of the Roman poet Vergil to educational and cultural heritage. The meeting began with a reading of excerpts from T.S. Eliot’s 1944 address to the Virgil Society of London, “What is a Classic?” and proceeded with a reading and discussion of two of Eliot’s poems, “Introspection” and “Circe’s Palace.” The group also examined Latin passages exhibiting a parallel between the actions of Circe and those of Dido. Next on the agenda was a reading of Nathaniel Hawthorne’s short story “Circe’s Palace,” along with a discussion. Among the alumni in attendance were students or recent graduates of various colleges and universities. Their major fields of study include biology, business, computer science, history, Latin and Greek, music, philosophy, physics, psychology, and theater. Friends In Action from pg 1 This changes our interface with our learning and the application of what we are learning. At the same time, it changes our hearts. We see in bigger ways what God is doing in various places around the world.” As part of this focus, Messiah’s engineering students have teamed up with FIA, which has a headquarters located between Elizabethtown and Middletown, to provide more than 1,400 Rama Cay people with a block press to produce struc-
tural building blocks for residential housing off the east coast of Nicaragua, as storms and the elements rot wooden huts. The initial efforts on this project are slated to eventually relieve the overcrowding and unsanitary conditions of more than 200 families on the tiny island. In June 2018, Dr. Brian Swartz’s engineering students worked with FIA to construct a pedestrian bridge above a 20foot ravine in Rama Cay that

prevented access to a proposed medical center and baseball field from the villagers’ new hurricane-resistant homes. Messiah’s Dr. Phillip Tan also visited the Rama in December 2018 to conduct microbiological and chemical analyses of water sources. “We are pleased to host Messiah’s students with engineering projects that apply their learning to solving real-world problems and meeting tangible needs that demonstrate God’s love,” noted Tim Johnston, FIA’s executive director. The latest partnership of FIA and Messiah’s Collaboratory will provide clean water through 16 miles of gravity-fed piping to more than 3,500 NiVan people in Vanuatu - covering 30 villages, two clinics, and three schools. Messiah’s Dr. Thomas Soerens visited the region with FIA after learning about the need of the villagers. “I hear your organization is a friend to the people of my village,” wrote Alani, a NiVan villager. “I write to you in need. The dry season is come, and I cannot catch enough rain water to care for my family. I ask you for water. Please come soon to help my family and my people. We will not make it through
the dry season without help.” The NiVan tribal leaders are already familiar with and grateful for FIA’s efforts to combine construction projects with the spread of the Gospel. The completion of a 6-kilometer road connecting 19 NiVan villages with schools and a medical clinic in 2011 resulted in faster medical transport and supply delivery, as well as more than 240 villagers coming to know Christ. Since 2017, The Collaboratory at Messiah College has partnered with FIA to secure a source of water in a high mountain spring that produces 48 gallons per minute, enough to meet the needs of thousands of villagers nearby. The scope of the project will require approximately $435,000 and five phases to complete. Teams of short-term volunteers are already slated for 2019 and beyond. The community is invited to join the efforts of FIA and Messiah College by providing financial support, donating construction materials, or taking part in a short-term work trip. For more information, readers may contact FIA at 717-546-0208 or fia-usa@ fiaintl.org or visit www.fiaintl.org.

“It is my desire to share my love of music with others,” said James Alfieri, newly appointed director of music and worship arts at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, 85 E. Brandt Blvd., Landisville. As such, Alfieri has created ZION Musik, a concert series that will kick off on Sunday, Feb. 24, at 4 p.m. with a performance by the Pennsylvania Flute Choir. “The goal and aim of the concert series stems from Martin Luther’s quote: ‘Next to the Word of God, music deserves the highest praise,’” Alfieri said, adding that “musik” is the German word for “music” and was used in the name of the series to reflect Luther’s German origins. “I feel that a concert series such as ZION Musik is a perfect way to complement the church’s music program, provide a community outreach, and present a wide variety of outstanding quality music to the Lancaster area,” he stated. Alfieri also noted that he wants to promote and highlight the talents of outstanding local

The program is supported by sponsorships and freewill offerings. “It is my hope that those in attendance will be blessed, uplifted,
musicians and inspire aspiring instrumentalists. He is excited about welcoming the Pennsylvania Flute Choir to Zion. “I can imagine the lofty sounds of the flutes soaring to the heavens in the marvelous acoustics of our sanctuary,” Alfieri remarked. “I also hope those in attendance will learn something new about this unique instrument.” As its name suggests, the Pennsylvania Flute Choir is dedicated to the promotion and performance of the flute in all its ranges and iterations. It is an auditioned community group that was formed as a onetime recital group in 2002 by flutist Georgia Dimaano. The choir has since grown to be an active, professional ensemble with more than 20 members who hail from southeastern Pennsylvania and New Jersey. The group performs throughout the tri-state region and has appeared at regional flute fairs, society events, and conventions. The Pennsylvania Flute Choir has a wide variety of repertoire, including classical, jazz, sacred, and contemporary selections. Although

father of the bride. “It’s a very funny show. I’m partial to the third act,” he said with a laugh. “There are some tragic roles. The challenge is in making it funny,” noted Kyle Dunbar of Mount Joy. He is the only actor who will appear in all three scenes, with varying roles as bellhop, waiter, and groom. Dunbar is embracing that challenge, along with those associated with making a stage debut. His only previous
interaction with theater was in taking a Fundamentals of Acting class as a freshman at Donegal High School. “I have learned something new every time (we rehearse),” Dunbar remarked. “I’m thankful for having an awesome director and cast.” The positive reputation of Susquehanna Stage is renowned throughout the area, attracting audiences and actors from quite a distance.
“ We have hobbies that demand you go where you can get a part,” added Persing, whose commute from York County is more than a half-hour. Reading native Mikaela Krall, who plays the high school sweetheart, travels from Annville, where she is a student at Lebanon Valley College. Veteran actor Ron Nason makes the drive from Mechanicsburg to portray a workaholic husband.

Alice Fernald and Hayden Shertzer, both of Mount Joy, were named to the dean’s list for the fall 2018 semester at Clarion University of Pennsylvania. To be named to the dean’s list, a student must earn a grade point average of 3.5 or higher.
At the recent 103rd Pennsylvania Farm Show, held from Jan. 5 to 12, Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding and Education Secretary Pedro Rivera celebrated agricultural education during the state FFA’s Mid-Winter Convention with more than 5,000 FFA members and guests. Pennsylvania’s more than 150 high school agriculture education programs aim to prepare students for science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) careers and beyond. The Mid-Winter Convention
recognized the academic, leadership and field-based experiences of 409 recipients of the Keystone Degree, the highest honor earned at the state level. In addition, the Pennsylvania FFA Alumni Association awarded more than 364 first-year members their own official FFA jacket after they completed a competitive application process. Last year marked the creation of the Commission on Agriculture Education Excellence. The 15-member commission complements Gov. Tom Wolf’s PAsmart
initiative, an investment in STEM and computer science education and hands-on technical education programs. PAsmart will invest $20 million in new funding for computer science and STEM education, as well as an additional $10 million investment in apprenticeships and job training programs for in-demand careers. As part of a workforce development plan outlined in a report issued in 2018, the departments are working to identify gaps in education and training for those in-demand career paths; focus on work-based learning, including micro-credentials and apprenticeships; and help Pennsylvanians obtain meaningful careers. The Pennsylvania FFA Association aims to help students develop their potential for leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education. The hopes, wishes, and, yes, gripes of trail users will be heard at a public forum on Saturday, March 16, at the Columbia Crossing River Trails Center, 41 Walnut St., Columbia. Registration will open at 8:30 a.m., and the program will run from 9 to 11 a.m. Lydia Martin, director of education and engagement for the Lancaster County Conservancy, is also a member of the Pennsylvania Trails Advisory Committee, which is part of the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR), and she sits on several local rail trail committees. Thus, it seemed fitting to Martin that she organize a forum during which individuals and organizations can engage in conversation about trails, whether they be used by hikers, birders, equestrians, cyclists, or others.
“The (Pennsylvania Trails Advisory Committee) focuses on all trails,” Martin said. “The forum is for all users, not just folks who sit on boards. It’s exciting to see the interest come from all levels.” Representatives of DCNR are slated to attend, as are representatives from Keystone Trails Association, MasonDixon Trail System, Northwest River Trail, Rail Trail Advisory Committee, and Susquehanna Heritage. These folks want to hear what trail users have to say, and they will help to facilitate small group discussions on a range of topics. Martin suggested that the topics will include the management, rehabilitation, and maintenance of existing trails; the planning, construction, and management of new trails; access to trails and the use of public lands; funding trails at the municipal,
