The Most Important Meal Of The Day The Dr. Seuss Way! By Sara D. Ulrich

The second day of March will soon be here, and the library will give you reason to cheer! The day has been planned by Miss Jan and Sam-I-Am; it’s the annual breakfast of green eggs and ham! All Seuss-isms aside, the Milanof-Schock Library, 1184 Anderson Ferry Road, Mount Joy, will host its annual Green Eggs and Ham breakfast fundraiser on Saturday, March 2, at 9 a.m. Tickets for the popular event are currently on sale, with separate

prices for adults and for children. Tickets must be purchased in person at the library. Children’s coordinator and organizer Jan Betty, known to most as Miss Jan, noted that the event typically sells out. “We have been getting phone calls about it since Jan. 1,” Miss Jan shared. In addition to the Dr. Seuss-inspired green eggs and ham, attendees may enjoy regular-colored eggs and ham, beverages, and sweet treats. Families are invited to enjoy activities during the event, such as coloring on the table coverings and singSee Green Eggs And Ham pg 9

Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo announced last September that 2019 would be the Year of Return, the start of a 15-year campaign to increase tourism and investment in the small West African country. Ghana was pivotal in the slave trade, and Akufo-Addo hopes to welcome people of African descent to the country that most likely played a role in their heritage. The loss of untold numbers of people to the slave trade and colonial rule has had a long-lasting impact on the people

Sandy (left) and Brian Brightbill (center) receive the Kim McNabb and Glenn L. Myers Friend of Heart Award from Shawn Hart (right), president of the American Heart Association, Lancaster Division board of directors. Nearly 300 Lancaster County business and community leaders came together at the 34th annual Lancaster Heart Ball on Feb. 2 at the Lancaster Country Club. The event raised more than $247,000 for the American Heart Association, a voluntary health organization focused on heart and brain health. The gala, themed “Fire and Ice,” opened with the Keep the Beat dance hour featuring The Uptown Band playing a full hour of songs with 100 beats per minute, which is the correct tempo for performing HandsOnly CPR. The dance hour was followed by a custom “Fire and Ice” performance from American Music Theatre dancers. Lancaster Chamber president Tom Baldridge hosted the evening’s festivities, which also included silent and live auctions, a hearthealthy dinner, musical entertainment and dancing. Dave Murray and Diane Murry served as the event’s co-chairs. Organizers dedicated this year’s Heart Ball and Open Your Heart appeal to longtime Heart Ball committee member and American Heart Association volunteer Kim McNabb, who passed away in December of a

heart-related illness. McNabb had been a volunteer for the Heart Ball since its inception 34 years ago. In his honor, American Heart Association, Lancaster Division board president Shawn Hart presented the Kim McNabb and Glenn L. Myers Friend of Heart Award to two other longtime volunteers and American Heart Association supporters, Brian and Sandy Brightbill. Funds raised from the Lancaster Heart Ball will support the American Heart Association’s mission to be a relentless force for a world of longer, healthier lives through community education, public policy advocacy, health care quality improvement and investment in lifesaving research. For more information about sponsoring or attending the 2020 Heart Ball, set for Saturday, Feb. 1, 2020, readers may contact Bill Coder at bill.coder@heart.org or 717-730-1736. of Ghana. “Ghana is a part of the world where great need exists,” said Troy Pfoutz, administrative director of Ghana Initiative Mobile Medical Mission, which is based in Mount Joy. “Many people in this West African nation struggle to meet basic needs. Each day, many poor and needy parents have to decide whether to prepare a single meal for their family or to pay the fees necessary to send their children to school.” To alleviate some of the impoverished Ghanaians’ physical needs and to lighten their spiritual burdens as well, Ghana Initiative has sent medical teams throughout the country for more than five years. The teams of Ghanaians and Americans provide muchneeded health care at no cost while striving to share God’s love with everyone they meet. As reported in a recent ministry newsletter, UNICEF’s statistics show that malaria, an insectborne disease, contributes to the death of approximately 20,000 children every year. During medical clinics in 2018, Ghana Initiative volunteers distributed insecticide-treated nets purchased from UNICEF to more than 1,000 homes in the eastern region of Ghana in an effort to cut down on the prevalence of malaria. Volunteers also gave away tooth care kits and toothbrushes, books, crayons and other school supplies, soccer cleats, clothing, hair supplies, and knitted dolls. Prescription eyewear and sunglasses were distributed during eye clinics. Ghana Initiative has also begun to build a missionary training center near one of the towns it regularly serves. The venue will include a warehouse for supplies, a classroom, a dormitory, and a ministry office.

The facility will be used to train Ghanaians and other West Africans to enter the missionary field or become pastors. To make all of this happen, Ghana Initiative relies on the support from individuals and businesses, and it also hosts an annual banquet and benefit auction. This year’s event will be held on Saturday, Feb. 23, at Weaver’s Banquet Facility, 2610 N. Reading Road, Denver. While banquet tickets are no longer available, the public is invited to attend the auction. Preview of the auction lots will open at 6:30 p.m., and the bidding will commence at 7 p.m. More than 130 items will be up for bids. These include dinners at upscale restaurants, flying lessons in a Cessna plane, a quarter-sawn cherry blanket chest lined with cedar, a hand-tufted Indian rug, artwork, a wooden rocking horse, Ghanaian baskets, a designer purse, collectible coins, gift card bundles, and more. Pfoutz hopes that area residents will attend and bid liberally. “Ghana Initiative Mobile Medical Mission represents the culture of Lancaster County,” he said. “In this county, people are generally caring, interested in helping when a need exists, and generous with what God has blessed them with. The money you might spend on an item that will bring joy into your life will make an impact in the life of a person halfway around the world in Ghana, West Africa.” The next mobile clinic in Ghana will take place from Tuesday, July 30, to Sunday, Aug. 11. Volunteers are being recruited now. For more information about Ghana Initiative Mobile Medical Mission or the auction, readers may visit www.ghanainitiative .com or call 717-615-4459.

DNA And Privacy Topics To Highlight Family History Conference

Preschool Will Host Open House Trinity United Church of Christ Preschool, 200 E. Market St., Hallam, will host an open house on Sunday, Feb. 24, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Interested families are invited to visit the classrooms, meet the staff, and discuss the programs and curriculum of the school. The preschool strives to provide a safe, secure learning environment where creativity is encouraged, a progressive curriculum is taught, and each child is recognized as one of God’s children. Tuesdays with Twos is an opportunity for caregivers and children to play, learn and grow. The meeting space is open to attendees and an adult beginning at 9 a.m. on class dates for open play and fellowship. Three-year-old students meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays. They learn during circle time, at tables during small group instruction and during thoughtful play.

Kindergarten readiness is the priority for the 4-year-olds who meet on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Students gain a basic understanding of core content areas, and both morning and afternoon classes are held. The prekindergarten program is designed to meet the needs of students who do not meet the age eligibility requirements for kindergarten, who would benefit from an additional year of preschool, or whose families are looking for a more intensive five-day program. Also, an extended-day/Lunch Bunch program is offered two days per week from October to April. Those unable to attend the open house may call 717-757-3169 or email preschool@trinityhallam.com to schedule a private tour. Registration forms and more information can be found at www.trinityhallam.com/preschool.

Individuals are invited to donate canned goods at Half Nuts Popcorn in Wrightsville as part of “Cans for Corn.” Donations will benefit the local food bank.

Sometimes genealogist Darvin Martin finds himself in the role of scientist. More specifically, Martin has found himself becoming well-versed in genetic science. He has developed an understanding of DNA and how it is passed from generation to generation. With the advent of basic genetic testing available through companies like Ancestry.com and 23andMe.com, a whole new aspect of genealogy has opened up. “There are huge benefits of DNA testing, but they lie in the deeper testing - not the basic ethnicity testing - which can reveal relatives,” Martin said. “You can share family trees and see how you connect.” There are some myths about genetic testing, however, and Martin hopes to dispel them during his presentation “The New DNA Reality: Forging the Path Between Discovery and Privacy,” which he will give on Friday, March 29, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society (LMHS), 2215 Millstream Road, Lancaster, as part of the 40th Lancaster Family History Conference. “Everyone assumes their DNA is private, but that’s not the case,” remarked Martin, conference committee chair. He explained that while a particular combination of DNA might be unique to a specific person, the components of those genes may be accessed through other avenues, as they come from their parents, who got their DNA from their respective parents, and so forth. “The way that we think about DNA is an illusion because nature does not work that way,” Martin said. During his presentation, Martin will discuss two recent cases in which DNA from genealogical sites helped law enforcement

officers trace and confirm the identity of perpetrators of crimes committed long ago. Additionally, Martin will address the concept of ethnicity and the uncertainty of genetic testing for ethnicity. “It’s a false assumption that you can quantify ethnicity. Ethnicity is not just genetics; it’s also history and culture,” Martin asserted. Martin ex plained that because of the way genes are randomly distributed, a pair of biological siblings might test as having genetic markers similar to people in completely different parts of the world. One way in which testing is helpful, however, is in men from Western European backgrounds. By tracing Y chromosomes, it is possible to see how surnames have changed over time. Martin related a story about two family groups in different states that discovered they share a Y chromosome and thus a common ancestor. It turned out that the last name of Carpenter was the English translation of the original German surname of Zimmerman. Martin’s presentation may be attended in person, or folks may watch it online live or at a later date. There will be an array of other presentations, seminars, discussions, and field trips offered before and during the Lancaster Family History Conference. The conference will examine how legal records are a helpful resource for understanding the details of one’s ancestors’ lives. Pennsylvania has a collection of legal records starting as early as 300 years ago. Genealogist Judy G. Russell will present the keynote address, “No Person Shall Gallop Horses in the Streets: Using Court Records to Tell the Stories of Our Ancestors’ Lives,” on Saturday, March 30. Russell has worked as a reporter, writer, legal investigator, defense attorney, federal prosecutor,

The breakfast always is planned to coincide with Dr. Seuss’ birthday, which falls on the day of the breakfast this year. Special guest the Cat in the Hat (as portrayed by local library patron Pat Gerlach) will attend the event, and guests may pose for photos with the friendly feline. The event is sponsored by the Norlanco-Rheems Kiwanis Club, and affiliated clubs from Donegal School District - Key Club from the high school and Builders Club from the junior high - will help serve the food. “These groups have been helping with the meal for quite a few years,” Miss Jan said, and she added that all of the food has been donated by local businesses. Junior League Will Give Grant

Go Beyond Sets Kickoff Events

The Junior League of Lancaster (JLL) invites local nonprofit organizations to apply for a Junior League Community Grant. The grant program’s goal is focused on the JLL’s current initiatives, Girls in STEM and Resilient Youth (Youth at Risk), looking to create deeper partnerships with community organizations that support these initiatives and the JLL mission. Nonprofit projects seeking the grant will be evaluated on their impact on the community and how they correspond to the initiatives. Grant proposals must be received by Monday, April 1. Readers may visit www.jllancaster.org for more details and submit grants to grants@jllancaster.org.

Go Beyond will hold identical kickoff events on Wednesday, Feb. 27, at 7 a.m. and Thursday, March 14, at 6:45 p.m. at Harvest Bible Chapel, 651 Lampeter Road, Lancaster. The Feb. 27 event will include breakfast. Each year through Go Beyond, dozens of churches, organizations and businesses, along with thousands of individuals, come together to unify and strengthen the community through acts of service. In May, hundreds of service projects will take place all around the area. To register for a kickoff or to obtain more information about Go Beyond, visit www.GoBeyond Us.com or call 717-393-9711.
