Main Street Mount Joy To Launch Podcast BY CATHY MOLITORIS

ount Joy has a story to tell, and Dave Schell wants to tell it. Schell, executive director of Main Street Mount Joy, is working on a podcast about Mount Joy. He hopes to launch the podcast in late March or early April. Doing a podcast has been on Schell’s mind since he started at Main Street Mount Joy three years ago. “I had a lot of the older-generation residents of Mount Joy coming in and asking me if I knew what my office used to be 40 years ago,” he recalled. “They started talking about what businesses used to be at different places in Mount Joy and how Mount Joy has changed over the years. … I realized that as time goes by, all those memories could be lost.” Although Mount Joy has a historical society, Schell wanted something he could record so people

M

could listen to the history for years to come. “I had been doing videos around Mount Joy, showing the back side of a business, like how a restaurant makes food or how Twisted Bine makes beer,” he stated. “Some people don’t like to be on camera, but they are happy to talk about their business all day, so this seems like a good fit for that.” Along with spotlighting Mount Joy businesses, Schell plans to include episodes on local nonprofits, civic organizations and Mount Joy residents. “I want to introduce the public works department to the community,” he said. “I want to focus on the police force, on the Lions Club, on the library, on a variety of nonprofits. I want other people to know what these organizations do and how we all work together to make Mount Joy a better place.” See Podcast pg 4

Cindy Olweiler, from Another Chance Boutique on Main Street in Mount Joy, will be a guest on the Main Street Mount Joy podcast. She will talk about her business and her nonprofit, Angels Among Us Animal Sanctuary.

INSIDE THIS ISSUE

BY CATHY MOLITORIS

For the past five years, Barbara Basile has been dedicating her time to promoting the programs and services of the Milanof-Schock Library. She will retire this month from her position as executive director. She said her time at the library has taught her the importance of community and the role the library plays in the lives of others. “In smaller communities like the Donegal area, we don’t have that many places where the community can gather,” she stated. “The library is one of them.” Basile came to Milanof-Schock from the Manheim Community Library. She has worked in libraries since the mid-1980s, with a focus on nonprofit administration. Her husband, David, was in the Army, and the couple traveled the world. See Librarian pg 4

“The library should be a place where everyone is welcome,” she explained. “It doesn’t matter how old you are, what your background is, what you believe or where you come from. I’ve worked really had to make sure the library is a place for everyone.” Kirstin Rhoads, community coordinator for the library, said Basile has made a positive impact on the library. “Working with Barbara has been a joy,” Rhoads said. “She is a ball of creative energy who truly cares for the people who come to the library. I think she’s helped make our library a place that people in the community want to visit, a place where they feel welcome.” Basile, 65, said she plans to enjoy family time in retirement. “If COVID taught me nothing else, it drove home the importance of being able to see family,” she shared. “I have a long bucket list.” She credits her staff and community members with making her job enjoyable over the last five years. “I have wonderful memories of the staff,” she stated. “I will also miss the people in the community. I just love talking to them, and I am so grateful for the opportunity. It has been a wonderful job.”

Schell plans to record episodes in the Main Street Mount Joy office but will also take his equipment to businesses or residents’ homes to record. “I want this to feel like we’re just sitting down and talking,” he remarked. “It will be done in a relaxed, conversational type of way.” He has just begun to spread the word about the podcast and said he’s already received suggestions for businesses and interesting residents to feature. He emphasized that it will take a few weeks to work out the kinks of doing the podcast. “I ask people to be patient with us as we figure it out,” he said. “The first episodes may be a little rocky, but we’ll get there.” Above all, he wants the podcast to shine a positive light on what’s happening in Mount Joy while also highlighting the borough’s rich history. “I look at this podcast as a great way of introducing people to Mount Joy,” Schell stated. “I’m excited to get started.” For more information on the podcast or to suggest topics, contact Main Street Mount Joy at 717653-4227 or visit www.facebook .com/MainStreetMountJoy.

“Working at the library was a golden opportunity to be a part of a hometown,” Basile remarked. “For years, I didn’t have that ‘hometown’ feeling since we traveled so much, but here, I was able to really get to know people and feel like I was part of the community.” Although Basile had library experience prior to coming to Mount Joy, she said her limited facilities management experience proved to be a challenge on the job. “Coming into a building that required me to supervise lawn care, sidewalk maintenance, leaking roofs, toilets not behaving that was the hardest part for me,” she noted. “I wanted to make sure the building was always in good condition for the community.” Throughout her tenure, she oversaw major projects such as the 2020 replacement of the roof and gutters on the building, the installation of LED lighting throughout the building and interior renovations including new carpet and painting. While Basile said she will not miss some aspects of the job, such as worrying about snow removal or grass mowing, she will miss the people she’s met over the years.

port to special-needs and critically ill people. The Pinnacle Cup benefits the Elizabethtown-based Camp Ladybug, a summer program for children and adults with mental or physical challenges. “I’m excited to mark our 20th year of this tournament,” Treese said. “We have had a number of sponsors and players stay with us throughout the years, and we’ve been able to contribute $89,000 to charity. I’m hoping this year we’ll get the participation to eclipse $100,000.” For more information on the Pinnacle Cup, readers may contact Treese at 717-367-9144 or cdtreese@centurylink.net.

Subaru of America Inc., joined by its two regional independent distributors, Subaru of New England and Subaru Distributors Corp., recently announced its continued commitment to supporting people affected by the COVID-19 pandemic by helping provide an additional 100 million meals to Feeding America. Each dollar helps to pro-

vide at least 10 meals secured by Feeding America on behalf of local member food banks. This donation is double the automaker’s April 2020 donation, in which it helped provide 50 million meals to the hunger-relief organization. Locally, the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank will benefit from the donation. See Subaru pg 8

I developed this tournament to be a match play tournament with teams of two people.” The field is limited to 64 teams overall, with two divisions available for teams to choose from. The Tournament Division is for teams with players age 54 and under, and the Senior Division is for teams with players ages 55 and older. “In the Tournament Division, each team will play three nine-hole matches against different teams,” Treese explained. “Each hole is like its own mini tournament, and it’s a scramble format that takes the best score of the two players and compares it to the opposing team. Whoever has the lower score wins the hole.” Up to 14 teams will be eligible for the championship match play rounds to determine the overall tournament champions. Teams in the Senior Division will play two matches of nine holes each. Up to four teams in the division will be eligible for the division playoff championship, which will

There’s a lot of power in plastic. That’s what Maria Wassell and other members of the Mount Joy Lions Club found out after they started a program to collect plastic and turn it into community benches. “I was looking for a project that would not be too strenuous because our club is getting older,” Wassell said. “I saw an article in a Lions magazine about turning plastic bags into benches and I thought it sounded like something we could do.” The club learned that Weis Markets in Mount Joy was a cooperating partner in the program, meaning the store would take whatever the club collected and give it to Trex, the company creating the benches. Trex sent the club collection containers and posters to advertise the types of plastic to collect. “For every 500 pounds of plastic we collected, we could earn a bench to put out in our community,” Wassell remarked. “It takes a lot of bags to get to 500 pounds.” In 2019, the group began collecting plastic at its twicea-month meetings and also placed collection boxes throughout Mount Joy. Bins are currently located at The Country Store, St. Mark’s United Methodist Church, Trinity Lutheran Church, JB Hostetter & Sons, Jim Roberts West Main Auto, The Gathering Place and Florin Church of the Brethren. “We would collect the bags weekly and then go to Weis and weigh them and report the weight we collected to Trex,” she explained. “ We could earn one bench every six months.” The club members assumed it would take a long to time to collect enough plastic for a bench, but they were happily surprised to be wrong.

“We earned one within the first six months,” Wassell stated. “So, we had a bench, and now we had to figure out what to do with it and how to indicate it’s a gift to the community.” Then COVID-19 hit, and although the club stopped meeting in person, the members still collected bags. “ Within the next six months, we earned another bench,” Wassell said. “ We knew it was time for us to get serious about what to do with these benches.” The club decided to have a member attend a borough council meeting and ask where the community would like the benches. “It sounds like they are going to be placed in community park areas throughout Mount Joy,” Wassell noted. “In the meantime, we have earned a third bench.” With many projects shut down during the pandemic, the bag collections actually expanded, she said. More collection sites were added, along with additional types of plastic. At JB Hostetter & Sons, for example, the group collects large amounts of pallet wrap. “More businesses could participate in that way, and we’d love it if they did, because pallet plastic is a heavier plastic than grocery bags, so it weighs more,” Wassell said. The program accepts a variety of plastics, including grocery bags, bread bags, newspaper sleeves, zipper-top bags, bubble wrap and produce bags, among other types. “At the beginning, 500 pounds seemed unreachable to us, but I just couldn’t believe how happy people were to be participating in this project with us,” Wassell remarked. “As a club, we try to find projects that are going to benefit the community in whatever way we can, and this fits in perfectly with that mission.”

Donegal Swimmers Earn 12 District Medals

BY LEAH SINTIC

Donegal swimmers made quite a splash at the 2021 PIAA District III Championships held at Cumberland Valley on March 6th and celebrated with a collection of a dozen medals-four of them silver. Junior Ethan Shonk earned two of those silver medals with his finishes in the 200 free (1:45.71) and backstroke (52.36). Jordynn Park powered her way to both a silver and a bronze with her second-place butterfly time of 58.14 and third-place breaststroke (1:06.17). Supplying the fourth Donegal silver of the day was Grant Leibfried with a 100-fly time of 52.87, which he complemented with a fifth-place finish in the breaststroke, posting a time of 1:02.85.

Claire O’Neill picked up a fourth and fifth place finish in her two events, the backstroke (59.72), and 200 IM (2:11.05), and Sierra Houck took home the same duo of medals just in different events. Houck snagged her fourth-place medal in the 500 free (24.96) and was fifth in the 100 free (55.24). Logan Fry cruised in at seventh in the breaststroke (1:04.06) and eighth in the 200 free (1:55.11), and Kylie Wilkinson supplied a pair of 11th place finishes in the 200 free (2:06.39) and the 500 free (5:43.47). “We had a good showing, and I was pleased with all my swimmers,” commented coach Alison Kreider. For four Donegal swimmers Photos by Alison Kreider the work is not done quite yet. Shonk, Park, O’Neill, and Donegal had seven swimmers compete in the District Three AA Championships at Central York High School on March 6. Swimming Leibfried all qualified to compete for the Indians were: left photo (from left), Kylie Wilkenson, Sierra Houck, Claire O’Neill and Jordynn Park; and right photo, Logan in the State Championship meet Fry, Ethan Shonk and Grant Leibfried. slated for Friday, March 19th.

The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, a member of Feeding America, has reported that demand for food assistance is at record high levels. Thousands of families in central Pennsylvania are experiencing food insecurity for the first time as a result of the pandemic. Of those individuals, one-third are children. The Subaru franchise, with its 633 retailers nationwide, will work with Feeding America to disburse the donation to the organization’s 199 food banks across the U.S. To ensure that food banks with the

highest need are served, Subaru will allocate 20% of the donation to national food programs and food banks with the highest food insecurity rates and child food insecurity rates. Furthermore, participating Subaru retailers nationwide have made supplemental donations to

their local Feeding America member food banks, currently totaling an additional 5.6 million meals to those in need, totaling 105 million meals donated from Subaru. Along with helping mentally challenged people and veterans, Caldwell’s organization is also focused on first responders. “A lot of first responders are veterans,” he stated. “I want to help the ones who are suffering and who are at risk for suicide.” Caldwell has a mission to combat post-traumatic stress disorder, he noted, and Lloyd’s Rides has expanded its services to offer computers for veterans who have this condition. Mary Caldwell, Randy’s wife of almost 50 years, noted that her husband has had a passion to give back since his youth, when medical problems prevented him from serving his country. “He didn’t qualify for military service, and because of that, he’s always had a desire to help people who have served and who are suffering because of their service,” she explained. “Charity has always been important to him.” For more information on Lloyd’s Rides, readers may visit www.lloydsrides.org or email Randy Caldwell at lloydsrides@gmail.com.

TIO

Caldwell, 72, said Lloyd’s Rides offers a sense of freedom and joy to participants and also lets them know they are not alone. “Lloyd’s Rides helps to build camaraderie and lets people know we care for them,” he explained. “I want to help.” Caldwell knows firsthand how it feels to ride, and he wants to pass that feeling on to others. “My dad used to take me for rides on his Harley when I was very little,” he recalled. “I’ve been riding motorcycles since I was 2 years old.” He emphasized that he will assist whoever takes over for him and will offer not only his knowledge of the organization, but also his connections to the community. “I have equipment. I have a banner and a tent to put up at motorcycle rallies,” he said, noting that he recruits for his organization at events. “I have been going to local motorcycle breakfasts, and I’ll help the person who takes over to keep everything going.”
