On Feb. 27, House on the Rock Family Ministries purchased the property at 10-18 N. Market St., Elizabethtown, from the Elizabethtown Lodge 596 Loyal Order of the Moose. The Moose commissioned highly decorated Lancaster architect Cassius Emlen Urban to design the building, which has been a hallmark of downtown Elizabethtown since it was constructed in 1924. Urban is well-known for his Classical Revival design, and his work can be seen in other local historical buildings such as Milton Hershey’s mansion, the Hershey Community Center Building, Stevens High School, and the former Watt & Shand Department Store building in downtown Lancaster, which is now home to the Lancaster County Convention Center and Marriott. The Moose building was constructed by the Hoffer Bros. See House On The Rock pg 5

The choir and organist-choirmaster Paul Reese will present a service of Choral Evensong and a half-hour organ recital on Sunday, March 22, at 4 p.m. at St. John’s Church, East Market and Chestnut streets, Marietta. This will be the second return visit of this choir and Reese, organist-choirmaster at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Lancaster. The service will include Scripture, prayer, and music - a tradition that began in cathedrals and university chapels in England and spread across the entire English-speaking world. The main choral singing will include settings by John Dykes of the Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis texts, the two traditional choral pieces in this service. Dykes is known around the world for his hymn tune to the “Holy, Holy, Holy” text and in the U.S. as well for

House on the Rock Family Ministries (HOTRFM) recently purchased the Moose building from the Elizabethtown Moose. Taking part were (front, from left) Bob Fox of Remax, HOTRFM executive director Jeff Kime, Brenda Crosby of Berkshire Hathaway, HOTRFM founders Karen and Bruce McCracken, and (back) Denver McDowell of the Elizabethtown Moose. Open houses for the public are planned for April 30 and May 3.

the music of the Navy hymn, “Eternal Father, Strong to Save.” The choir will also sing the anthem “Give Ear, O Lord, and Visit Me” by James A. Rogner, a late 20th-century Chicago-area church choir director. Dr. Karl E. Moyer, co-organist at the Marietta church, will accompany the choir. The Rev. Regina Bautista, rector of the Marietta church, will read the parts of the service that are commonly spoken, and Reese will intone those texts that are usually sung. The congregation will be invited to join the choir in singing several hymns. A sermon or organ recital is

often added to the Choral Evensong service, and Reese will precede the musical prayer service with a half-hour of organ music on the church’s organ. The major work of his recital will be the Prelude and Fugue in E-Flat by Bach. The fugue is often referr to as the “St. Anne Fugue.” Two other organ pieces will round out the recital, and at the close of the Evensong service, Reese will play “Piece Heroïque” by César Franck. A reception will follow in the social hall, where the congregation may greet Reese and the choir. For more information, readers may contact Bautista at 717-557-3682.

request, Blake’s parents encouraged him to choose wisely. “We told him to really think about it. Make-A-Wish makes an effort to say to kids, ‘This is the one time it’s OK to be selfish,’” Shelby shared. “I said that I kind of just want to sit down and have lunch with the Flyers and have pizza,” recalled Blake. Make-A-Wish and the Flyers took that request and ran with it. Blake, his parents, and younger brother Brent headed to Philadelphia for two full days of star treatment. “All we knew was that we were going to the practice arena, but we didn’t know any of the details,” Shelby said. After watching the Flyers practice on Feb. 27, Blake suited up in his own practice uniform in the team locker room and took to the ice for a skills practice with Giroux. “After (Blake’s) practice, he came back in the locker room, got changed, and they took him up to the press room where the general manager signed him for a 24-hour contract with the

His parents, Brian and Shelby Stiegauf of Lititz, said that the amount of gratitude they feel for Blake’s doctors and care team and his recovery cannot be understated. “We’re celebrating six months cancer-free,” said Shelby. Blake is a lifelong Flyers fan and his bedroom is “everything Flyers,” Shelby said. Blake has been a member of the Manheim Central Ice Hockey Club since fourth grade, and Brian has been assistant coaching since Blake was in sixth grade. Shelby said that Blake’s oncologist made it clear that he would do everything in his power to make sure that Blake recovered and was ready to play in time for hockey season in the fall. Philadelphia Flyers,” shared Shelby. Then it was time for a one-onone lunch with Giroux. “I kind of forgot the questions I had in my mind to ask him,” said Blake with a laugh. “He was asking me about my cancer experience, and he brought up how he was talking with Oskar (Lindblom) about his cancer experience.” Lindblom, a Flyers forward, was diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma in December 2019 and was out for the season for treatment. Make-A-Wish sent the Stiegaufs to Dave & Buster’s that evening and to the Franklin Institute for the day on Feb. 28 before the evening game. “We knew that Blake needed to wear a suit to the game Friday night, but that was it,” Shelby said. “We had limo transportation to the rink, where he went into the player entrance and was escorted back to a guest locker room and had a full Flyers uniform with his name and number on a jersey.” Blake suited up, announced the starting lineup in the locker room and led the team out of the tunnel onto the ice. He then took his official solo “rookie lap” before taking a shot on goalie Carter Hart and warming up with the team. To top off the whole experience, Blake got to do a press interview with Giroux, who scored two goals in the Flyers’ win over the New York Rangers that night. “Make-A-Wish and the Flyers went so far above and beyond what we ever anticipated,” remarked Shelby. “How do you ever say thank you for something like this?”

A contractor for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) was scheduled to resume work on a section of Route 772 starting on March 16. The project’s aim is to repair and resurface a 1.5mile section of Route 772 (Anderson Ferry Road/Marietta Avenue) from just east of the intersection with Union School Road in East Donegal Township to the intersection with Delta Street in Mount Joy Borough. Work includes drainage upgrades and widening at the intersection of Route 772 and Locust Lane. Traffic will be restricted to a single lane under daylight flagging. The road will be open to unrestricted traffic during evening hours. These conditions will remain in place until Monday, April 6, after which Route 772 will be closed to through traffic from School Lane to New Haven Street in Mount Joy Borough. A detour will be in place during the closure using Angle Street and Main Street (Route 230). Access will be maintained to all residences within the work zone.

Work within this closed section of Route 772 includes drainage upgrades, widening, and sidewalk and ADA curb ramp work. This closure is expected to last until September. The work is part of a $2,579,600 contract that was awarded in June 2019 to Pennsy Supply Inc. of Annville. Work under this contract is scheduled to be completed by the end of November. Travelers are reminded to be alert for these operations, to obey work zone signs, and to slow down when approaching and traveling through work zones for their safety as well as for the safety of the road crews. dogs that need to be adopted. Angels Among Us rescues senior dogs throughout central Pennsylvania from high-kill shelters, as well as discarded breeding dogs from local puppy mill operations. “Our focus is on dogs who are seven years and older, explained Olweiler. “We are extremely specialized because there is such a strong need for this locally. The organization’s mission is to help as many homeless

senior dogs as possible and to reduce the number of dogs being euthanized due to a lack of funding or space. Angels Among Us provides all of the necessary veterinarian services for its adoptable dogs, in addition to specialized care for dogs with medical issues. “We had more than $50,000 in medical bills last year for our senior rescues, noted Olweiler. “We’re always fundraising.

With experience as an independent antiques dealer for the last 35 years, Olweiler decided to pursue a permanent storefront option as a way to bring in more funds to support the costs of operating Angels Among Us. Once a dog is brought to Angels Among Us, it is placed with a trained foster family that provides care until an adoptive family is found. Olweiler said that the organization is foster-based due to the fact that senior dogs often do not function well in a shelter environment. In addition to dogs, Angels Among Us occasionally cares for cats and other animals as needs to arise; however, dogs are its primary focus for now. To adopt a dog, individuals must first fill out an application before undergoing a home visit and veterinarian reference check. A meeting also takes place with all family members and current pets in the home. The process is rigorous to ensure the animals receive loving, forever homes to live out their last days. “We deal with a lot of really sad cases, shared Olweiler. “Some (of the dogs) come from companions who are unable to care for them anymore, but a lot of the senior dogs have never lived in a home before. Many of the dogs we bring in have never played with a toy or taken a treat. Olweiler takes great joy in Match Made in Heaven, the organization’s program that began five years ago to pair healthy senior dogs with senior citizens. “I love matching dogs with senior citizens, she remarked. “(Another Chance Boutique) is here because of these animals. If not for that, I wouldn’t be adding another career, added Olweiler with a laugh. Another Chance Boutique is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Fridays. From 1828 to 1923, the lot where it stands was the site of a much-expanded two story woodframe structure known as the Hotel Greenawalt, run by Col. identified carriers. Originally planning to collect 2,000 samples over 3 years, CSC conducted 2,177 tests in just 15 months across 15 states. CSC identified 318 individuals as carriers of SMA, exceeding the 1 in 25 carrier frequency of the general Mennonite population. A total of nine carrier couples were identified. Both parents were carriers for SMA, meaning they have a 25% chance of having an affected baby. Furthermore, three affected infants were identified at birth, and all were treated pre-symptomatically with gene therapy. In addition, six at-risk infants were tested as newborns and were not affected. This program was funded by AveXis, a biotechnology company that launched Zolgensma, a gene therapy for pediatric patients with SMA. The Clinic for Special Children (CSC) has completed its Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) Prevention Readiness program. The program, launched in 2018, offered free carrier testing with the goal of identifying Plain (Amish or Mennonite) individuals and couples who are SMA carriers. SMA causes progressive degeneration of motor nerve cells in the spinal cord and brainstem. Historically, the only treatment for SMA was care of the symptoms. However, recently approved targeted therapies may be used to treat the disease, according to CSC. These therapies are best administered before a patient shows significant symptoms of the disease, so genetic diagnosis is key. One way to identify families with a risk for the disease is to identify adult carriers. CAC also employed cascade testing, that is, testing of blood relatives of

Thanks to connections between the Lancaster County Career & Technology Center (LCCTC) and local business and professional associations, HVAC/R students at the Brownstown campus have a new, modern oil boiler to augment their training. The new boiler was donated on Feb. 26 by Energy Kinetics, a heating and hot water systems manufacturer headquartered in Lebanon, N.J. The connection for the donation was facilitated by the Southeastern PA chapter of Oil & Energy Service Professionals (OESP). Brian Kiernan, territory manager of Pennsylvania, Virginia and D.C. for Energy Kinetics, and Scott Ansel of Meyer Oil Company, Cleona, president of the Southeast PA Chapter of OESP, participated in the donation. According to HVAC/R instructor Michael Arnt, the new boiler will allow students to train on the same type of equipment that they will see when they are out on the job. He added that supply costs are a significant factor in determining the specific hands-on work that is done in class. Arnt said that donations of materials like the new boiler make a huge difference in the overall education of the students in his class.
