Annual Banquet, Benefit Auction Planned By Francine Fulton
This year, the annual Mount Joy Chamber of Commerce banquet and benefit auction on Friday, April 12, will not only raise funds for community events and scholarships, it will also celebrate the Chamber’s 80th anniversary. The organization formed on April 17, 1939, when business owners who were on the Board of Trade decided to instead become a Chamber of Commerce. The event, which will feature food, as well as silent, live and Chinese auctions, will take place at Melhorn Manor, 977 W. Main St., Mount Joy. The event is open to the public, and individuals do not need to be members of the Chamber to attend. According to Mount Joy Chamber
coordinator Kerry Meyers, the theme of the event is “Rustic Charm.” “Our venue, Melhorn Manor, is ‘rustically charming’ as is, but the décor will elevate the space and celebrate 80 years of Mount Joy Chamber influence in our community,” she stated. The evening will begin at 5:30 p.m. with the opening of an appetizers station. Bidding on silent auction items and Chinese auction items will also open at 5:30 p.m. A salad station will be available at 6:30 p.m. “At approximately 6:50 p.m., everyone will be called together for a welcome from the Chamber president and there will be a few special moments to celebrate the Chamber’s 80th anniversary year,” said Meyers. “After the welcome, the buffet will open along with the dessert station. After dinner and dessert, the live auction will be held with many awesome items to bid on. See Mount Joy Chamber pg 12

Standing behind the table were members of the “lunch crew” from Manheim Central High School. Clad in aprons, hats and food service gloves, they spooned up pasta, mixed vegetables and watermelon onto the students’ plates. On this day, the lunch and cleanup See Kraybill Program pg 13

wanted and sell them,” said Royer. In addition to the flower pots, the display features cups, jugs, and a food mold similar to a bundt cake pan, along with a photo of Smith with one of his apprentices. Redware items, which are individually made, range from simple utilitarian plates and bowls to unusual pitchers shaped like heads. Platters were often decorated using one of two techniques. “(Potters) put glaze down on (the item), and then they scratch through it (using a technique) called sgraffito,” said Royer, who explained that the scratches allowed the natural red color to show through. Slip decoration is a technique that creates lines and writing on pieces. Decorations

often include birds and flowers. “Redware has similarities to other Pennsylvania German (creations) such as fraktur and blanket chests,” said Royer. “Pennsylvania Germans love colors and designs,” she added. “Just look at their quilts.” Use of redware was not confined to the kitchen and dining room. On display in the exhibit are a chicken waterer, a bee skep, footrests for a stove, and a variety of decorative items, including a piece in the form of a tiny cabin that is really a bank. To tell the tale of potters who made redware in Pennsylvania, Royer has organized “Thrown, Fired, and Glazed: The Redware Traditions From Pennsylvania and Beyond.” Part one of the exhibit opened on March 10 at the museum, 2451 Kissel Hill Road, Lancaster, and it will remain open through Tuesday, Dec. 31. Part two, which will feature the rest of the pieces Royer has gathered from the Barnes Foundation, The Hershey Story, Winterthur Museum, and Landis Valley’s own collection, will open in March of 2020. Royer said that when she began to plan the 2019 exhibit, she realized that redware had not been displayed in the museum for quite some time. “I started to talk to institutions and private collectors,” recalled Royer. “We were finding wonderful pieces, and the collection was getting bigger.” It was too big, in fact, to display all the pieces in one year, hence the two-year, two-part exhibit. Royer noted that one catalog will be published for the two parts. Royer explained that one reason so many potters came to Pennsylvania was in the makeup of the earth. “The clay here is similar to what was found in Europe,” she said, adding that most potters were also farmers. “They would farm, and then, when they had downtime, they would make pottery,” said Royer. “They had all the clay on their land, and redware was cheap to make.” Each town had its own potter throwing pieces on a wheel or making them in molds. “When you knew he was going to open his kiln, you would go to his place and pick from the kiln what you needed,” explained Royer. “You could also tell him ahead of time what you might want so he could make it.” Not all potters stayed put in one town, however. Part of the display includes pieces by Willoughby Smith, a potter who took orders and even sold pottery door-to-door. Smith, who is associated with Berks and Montgomery counties, had a special carrying case filled with his flower pot samples, which fit into the bag like nesting dolls. “Smith would go around (from house to house) and ask what size pot (a customer)

specific skills to come to live and work in the area, which he had named Pennsylvania. “When William Penn held a call for laborers to come over, potters were on his list,” explained Jennifer Royer, Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum curator. Into the late 1800s, much pottery was redware, earthenware vessels and dishes made from clay with a high iron content that turned the pottery red when pieces were fired in a kiln.

Dessert and appetizers have been donated by local restaurants. “We will dine buffet-style to allow for a relaxed flow between dining and bidding,” she said. the chance to do dishwashing work at Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology. “The skills that she’s been learning here are opening her to some other opportunities,” Troutman said. While Troutman’s students may not have the same communication skills as other students, she has seen them grow socially through their interaction with the Kraybill students. It’s like “welcoming a friend that we see every Monday and Tuesday,” she added. At Christmastime, the Kraybill students made a big thank-you poster for the Manheim students, which hangs in their classroom. As Troutman put it, “It’s now stretched our community to include (people) outside of our own school.”

crew consisted of five special-needs students in Manheim Central’s life skills support class who are learning the real-world skills needed in food service work. Led by teacher Gail Troutman and accompanied by aides and an occupational therapist, this class, with a total of eight students, visits Kraybill on Mondays and Tuesdays. On Wednesdays or Thursdays, students in Manheim Central’s Intro to School to Work class, led by teacher Kim Hatfield, serve lunch at Kraybill. Kraybill parents volunteer for lunch duty on the remaining two days. A food vendor delivers the food to the school, which does not have a cafeteria. After students are handed their lunch plates, they return to their classrooms to eat. The cooperative project between Manheim Central’s special education program and Kraybill, a private Christian school in Mount Joy, began last fall, when Kraybill began serving hot lunches to its 120 students in prekindergarten through eighth grade. Both Troutman and Kraybill’s principal, M.J. Smith, described the public-private partnership as a “win-win” situation that benefits both the special-needs and Kraybill students. According to Smith and Sarah Schaefer, a Kraybill parent and board member, Kraybill’s board decided to begin the hotlunch program as part of the transition to becoming independent from the Lancaster Mennonite School organization. The plan is to keep the school open despite decreased enrollment. Other incentives, such as lowering tuition rates and adding Spanish instruction and before-school child care, have helped reverse that trend, Smith and Schaefer said. Kraybill will become fully independent on Monday, July 1, which is also the start of the school’s 70th year, Smith pointed out. “It’s been a vital part of the community. It’s the center of life for many people. They just have great memories of being here,” she said. The school never had a hot-lunch program before. “We wanted to provide that option,” said Smith. As the possible lunch program was being discussed, Schaefer, who is supervisor of pupil services for the CornwallLebanon School District, suggested that special-needs students could be of help while also getting some much-needed work experience. Local districts were contacted, and Manheim Central was able to sign on. In addition to serving the food, the Manheim Central students count and wrap silverware in napkins based on how many students sign up for a hot lunch on any given day. On a recent Tuesday, student Isaiah Collins busied himself at a chalkboard, recording the count for each class. Student Dustin Martin said he enjoys wrapping up the utensils. Kayla Boyer likes doing the dishes. After finishing their own lunches, Kayla and Isaiah, accompanied by paraeducator Amy Dissinger and personal care assistant Karen Beck, collected bins of dishes and took them to the kitchen to be cleaned off and loaded into dishwashers, with Dustin joining them for that task. Troutman pointed out that Kayla had
