Rotary Club Plans Park Workday BY CATHY MOLITORIS
It takes a village to make a park beautiful. That’s what the Rotary Club of Mount Joy thinks, so the club invites the public to the Rotary Park Workday and Community Celebration on Saturday, April 10. The event will be held in light rain or sunshine. A rain date is set for Saturday, April 24. The workday will begin at 8 a.m. “A complimentary breakfast will be served from 7 a.m. until 7:45 a.m. while supplies last for those who arrive early,” said David Christian, Rotary Club of Mount Joy’s Rotary Park chairman. “A

elly R. Price, the director of food services for Donegal School District, has a saying she likes to tell people. “I always say, ‘Everyone thinks we thaw frozen pizza,’” she stated. “The cafeteria is so much more than thawing frozen pizza.” On a typical day at Donegal, students may enjoy homemade beef stroganoff or chicken and pasta with pesto. Over the course of a school year, the department serves 364,000 meals, providing breakfast and lunch as well as a friendly smile to thousands of students. And despite the almost daily challenges presented by the pandemic, Price and her staff have not missed a beat. “When the district shut down in March of 2020, we only lost one day of serving meals,” Price recalled. “We closed on Friday, March 13,
“We recognize the tremendous efforts of the food service team at Donegal School District who are working tirelessly to help get more meals to more children.” Their work just got a little easier thanks to a $5,000 grant from Kellogg Company and No Kid Hungry. The department was awarded the grant in late 2020 and is using the funds to continue its focus on feeding students.

In a normal year, about 40% of Donegal students qualify for free or reduced-cost breakfast and lunch. This year, the USDA has provided a waiver for all students to receive free meals during the pandemic. Currently, the district is serving close to 65% of its students through the program, Price said. Donegal students have been meeting in person throughout this school year, and Price and her staff found ways to work with social distancing and other pandemic guidelines. New equipment was needed as the department shifted from a traditional “lunch line” business model to an in-classroom delivery system from carts. Additionally, any students who have chosen to participate in virtual learning are eligible to pick up five days’ worth of prepackaged breakfast and lunch items once a week. The grant money has helped the department purchase insulated bags, heating
Community support means everything to the staff at Gus’s Keystone Family Restaurant. To thank the community, the restaurant will offer a free Easter dinner at both its locations - 1050 W. Main St., Mount Joy, and 3687 Rothsville Road, Ephrata. The meal will be available for takeout only on Sunday, April 4, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. or until meals run out, said Yianis Kourgelis, who owns the restaurant with his father, Gus. The workday will end at 2 p.m., and a pickup softball game is tentatively planned for after the workday is complete.” The park, located at 201 Fairview St., is home to Hotchkiss, Merchandiser, and Don “Pop” Staley fields. Community members use the park for ball games, walks, and picnics. The workday helps to prepare the park for its busy season, Christian noted. Volunteers may register for the event individually or in groups. “We will be spreading about 55 cubic yards of mulch, cutting nice edges in our planting beds, grooming the baseball field infields and warning track, and much, much more,” Christian stated. “If you or your group would like to donate a flat or two of colorful annuals or perennials, feel free to bring them along, and we will find a place for them to go.”

The staff at Gus’s Keystone Family Restaurant, along with members of the Mount Joy Borough Police Department, gave out hundreds of free dinners last Easter.
The free meal is a way to show community members how much they are appreciated, Yianis said. “With all the negativity and hardship
of this past year, this is something we can do to put a smile on someone’s face,” he explained. “We just like to make people happy.”

sitting around talking about how the pandemic was affecting the community when inspiration struck. “My dad said it might be good to do something like this for the community and it would be good to see our customers, because we were closed at that time,” Yianis recalled. “Last year went so well, we knew we wanted to do it again this year. We’re hoping to do it every year.” This year has been tough for the restaurant business, he noted, but that didn’t stop the family from wanting to give back. “We’ve been in Mount Joy for 21 years, and we’ve been in Ephrata about six years. The communities in both locations have been very supportive,” Yianis explained. “We have regulars who come in two or three times a day. We’ve just gotten such a great response to our restaurants that we thought, if we can give up one day of profits to give back to the community, we’re more than happy to do that.” Last year, the restaurants gave out 1,000 meals between the two locations, he said, adding, “Each meal was packed for two people, so we actually prepared 2,000 meals.” Yianis said the staff is happy to participate in the opportunity to thank customers for their support. “We have very strong loyalty with our customers, but also with our staff,” he stated. “As a family-owned restaurant, we are very tight knit. We also like to think of the community as part of our family because we love to getting to know our customers.”

Atlantic League Plans Season The Atlantic League announced recently that it will open its 23rd official championship season on Friday, May 28. League officials will work with team executives on additional details of the 2021 season, including COVID-19-related safety protocols. The league is finalizing the admission of new teams, conducting player signings, and working with its Major League
Baseball partners on test initiatives for the 2021 campaign. Mindful of government safety concerns, especially ballpark attendance allowances, the league felt it was critical to announce its intention to play a full season this year. Additional details regarding the full 2021 season are forthcoming. For more information, readers may visit www.atlanticleague.com.

If people are interested in helping but cannot attend on April 10, the club will accept monetary donations or will help individuals or groups set up other times to work in the park during the year. This year’s event is particularly important, Christian added, because last year’s workday was canceled due to the pandemic. “The Rotary Club of Mount Joy seeks our community’s assistance to polish some of the rough edges on the gem that is Rotary Park as we prepare the park for the enjoyment of our community’s youth during the upcoming season,” he said. Volunteers should bring their own tools, including shovels, rakes, pitchforks, saws, and wheelbarrows. Mount Joy has a story to tell, and Dave Schell wants to tell it. Schell, executive director of Main Street Mount Joy, is working on a podcast about Mount Joy. He hopes to launch the podcast in late March or early April. Doing a podcast has been on Schell’s mind since he started at Main Street Mount Joy three years ago. “I had a lot of the older-generation residents of Mount Joy coming in and asking me if I knew what my office used to be 40 years ago,” he recalled. “They started talking about what businesses used to be at different places in Mount Joy and how Mount Joy has changed over the years. … I realized that as time goes by, all those memories could be lost.” Although Mount Joy has a historical society, Schell wanted something he could record so people could listen to the history for years to come. “I had been doing videos around Mount Joy, showing the back side of a business, like how a restaurant makes food or how Twisted Bine makes beer,” he stated. “Some people don’t like to be on camera, but they are happy to talk about their business all day, so this seems like a good fit for that.” Along with spotlighting Mount Joy businesses, Schell plans to include episodes on local nonprofits, civic organizations and

Mount Joy residents. “I want to introduce the public works department to the community,” he said. “I want to focus on the police force, on the Lions Club, on the library, on a variety of nonprofits. I want other people to know what these organizations do and how we all work together to make Mount Joy a better place.” Schell plans to record episodes in the Main Street Mount Joy office but will also take his equipment to businesses or residents’ homes to record. “I want this to feel like we’re just sitting down and talking,” he remarked. “It will be done in a relaxed, conversational type of way.” He has just begun to spread the word about the podcast and said he’s already received

suggestions for businesses and interesting residents to feature. He emphasized that it will take a few weeks to work out the kinks of doing the podcast. “I ask people to be patient with us as we figure it out,” he said. “The first episodes may be a little rocky, but we’ll get there.” Above all, he wants the podcast to shine a positive light on what’s happening in Mount Joy while also highlighting the borough’s rich history. “I look at this podcast as a great way of introducing people to Mount Joy,” Schell stated. “I’m excited to get started.” For more information on the podcast or to suggest topics, contact Main Street Mount Joy at 717-653-4227 or visit www.facebook.com/Main StreetMountJoy.

Growing up, Randy Caldwell watched his father, Lloyd, go out of his way to help others. Inspired by his dad, Caldwell started an organization to give back to the community. Now, the Penryn man is the one who needs help. Caldwell created Lloyd’s Rides in 2016. The nonprofit organization gives rides on motorcycles, or in hot rods or other specialty vehicles to mentally challenged people and wounded warriors. Although the organization has been his focus for the past five years, Caldwell is facing mounting medical difficulties and is seeking someone to take over Lloyd’s Rides. “Right now, it’s just me in

this organization,” he said. “My wife is a registered nurse, and she takes good care of me. I want to find somebody who will take care of this organization because it’s becoming too much for me.” Caldwell, 72, said Lloyd’s Rides offers a sense of freedom and joy to participants and also lets them know they are not alone. “Lloyd’s Rides helps to build camaraderie and lets people know we care for them,” he explained. “I want to help.” Caldwell knows firsthand how it feels to ride, and he wants to pass that feeling on to others. “My dad used to take me for rides on his Harley when I was very little,” he recalled. “I’ve been riding motorcycles since I was 2 years old.” He emphasized that he will assist whoever takes over for him and will offer not only his knowledge of the organization, but also his connections to the community. “I have equipment. I have a banner and a tent to put up at motorcycle rallies,” he said, noting that he recruits for his organization at events. “I have been going to local
motorcycle breakfasts, and I’ll help the person who takes over to keep everything going.” Along with helping mentally challenged people and veterans, Caldwell’s organization is also focused on first responders. “A lot of first responders are veterans,” he stated. “I want to help the ones who are suffering and who are at risk for suicide.” Caldwell has a mission to combat post-traumatic stress disorder, he noted, and Lloyd’s Rides has expanded its services to offer computers for veterans who have this condition.
Mary Caldwell, Randy’s wife of almost 50 years, noted that her husband has had a passion to give back since his youth, when medical problems prevented him from serving his country. “He didn’t qualify for military service, and because of that, he’s always had a desire to help people who have served and who are suffering because of their service,” she explained. “Charity has always been important to him.” For more information on Lloyd’s Rides, readers may visit www.lloydsrides.org or email Randy Caldwell at lloyds rides@gmail.com.

Since June 1, 2020, PHEAA has shared 75 of its customer service representatives, along with three supervisors, to assist L&I in reducing its backlog of applicant inquiries relating to unemployment compensation applications. Pavilion No. 5 will be the site of Camp Ladybug, an annual summer program held for people who have mental and/or physical challenges. This year’s camp theme is “Hawaiian Hullabaloo!” The camp, which is a project of GEARS, will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on Mondays through Fridays. Camp will begin on Monday, June 14, and will run through Friday, July 23. Camp will not be held on Monday, July 5. “Camp Ladybug started in the summer of 1968,” said Karen Eberly, senior program coordinator for

GEARS. “A group of parents wanted to keep their special needs children active and engaged over the summer.” The camp was originally run by the Kiwanis Club of Elizabethtown, but GEARS took it over in 2003. Camp Ladybug features games, crafts and activities for anyone age 6 and older. “ We have a very creative camp director,” Eberly said of Beth Lynch, who also directed camp last summer. “She has really great ideas. … She comes up with wonderful activities, and really, the possibilities of what we can do at camp are endless.” Eberly said the camp has proven so popular that there are campers and volunteers who return year after year. “We have some campers in their 40s who have come for years,” she stated. “We have a lady in her 80s who has volunteered for years.” She noted that Camp Ladybug would not be possible without community sponsors who help fund the camp, which is free to Elizabethtown residents, and without volunteers who are dedicated to making the camp fun for everyone. “We try to achieve one-toone ratios of volunteers to campers, and we usually get that,” Eberly remarked. “We have wonderful support from the community.”
Kerry B. enjoyed the activities at last year’s Camp Ladybug, held in Elizabethtown Community Park.
She said the camp not only offers something fun to do over the summer, but also gives campers the chance to try new things. “You just have to take a look at our photos on Facebook to see all the things that camp provides,” she stated. “It’s amazing what we can accomplish with the campers. We’re able to offer them the chance to experience activities they may never have tried before. It’s really great to be able to introduce our campers to so much through this camp.” This year’s camp will fol-
low all CDC and Pennsylvania Department of Health guidelines, including mask wearing for campers, staff and volunteers, Eberly said. For more information on Camp Ladybug, visit w w w. g e t i n t o g e a r s . o r g , search for “GEARS” on Facebook or call 717-367-0355.

and cooling equipment, and packaging to make meal prepping and transportation easier. “Breakfast service has been the hardest,” Price said. “Less than 10% of our students were participating in breakfast, because kids couldn’t come to the serving lines like they could before. With the addition of the carts and bags, we are able to bring breakfast to them and, in turn, increase our meal distribution by 60%.” Diana Hovey, senior vice president of corporate partnerships for Share Our Strength, the organization behind the No Kid Hungry campaign, said providing food to students is more important than ever. “America’s kids need us,” she stated. “Traditionally, many kids have relied on the meals they get at school each day.” Selecting Donegal to receive the grant was an easy choice, said Jen Roth, general manager K-12 of Kellogg’s Away From Home division, adding, “We recognize the tremendous efforts of the food service team at Donegal School District who are working tirelessly to help get more meals to more children.”

PA 211 Offers Resource Help On Feb. 11, the national 211 resource celebrated 211 Day, joining the United Way of Pennsylvania and the more than two hundred 211 call centers across the country to celebrate this resource and those who make it possible. The date 2/11 was chosen for 211 Day in connection with the three-digit number anyone in need can dial to connect to a call center to obtain local resources across the U.S. Help is also available at www.pa211.org, where readers may also find information about requesting help via text. PA 211 East, United Way of Lancaster County’s signature program, covers Berks, Lancaster, Lebanon, Lehigh, Northampton, Carbon, and Schuylkill counties. The 12 employees work to assist countless residents year-round. PA 211 call centers have been working to meet the
increased needs brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. In total, PA 211 East had 69,377 contacts with the community in 2020, which is an increase of 7,322 from 2019. PA 211 is the free, confidential, 24/7/365 service that connects Pennsylvanians with all the health and human services in their area that are available to help. During the COVID-19 pandemic, PA 211’s contact center staff shifted to remote operations and continued to provide trained resource navigators. PA 211 provided its statewide resource database as a backbone to deliver up-tothe minute information about available local services and volunteer opportunities. PA 211 uses the PA 211 Counts dashboard, available at https://pa.211counts.org, to understand the needs of individuals in counties, legislative districts, and regions.

Virtual Food Drives Needed Central Pennsylvania Food Bank (CPFB) will launch another virtual food drive. The virtual food drive is an online tool allowing individuals and organizations to raise funds to help the CPFB purchase and distribute large quantities of fresh, nutritious, and shelfstable healthy foods at deeply reduced rates. Every dollar raised through the virtual food drive will help the food bank distribute more than six healthy meals to those in need throughout 27 central Pennsylvania counties. CPFB is currently serving more than 200,000 individuals per month through its network of 1,000 partner
agencies and programs, and it distributes more than 1.3 million pounds of food per week. Hosting a virtual food drive allows community members to reach more of these individuals by helping the food bank purchase fresh fruits, vegetables, dairy products, and proteins, in addition to nonperishable food items. Readers interested in starting a virtual food drive on behalf of the CPFB are encouraged to visit www.centralpafoodbank.org. Instructions for setting up a drive can be found under the Ways to Give tab. For additional details, readers may contact vfd@centralpafood bank.org or 717-564-1700.
