Make-A-Wish Truck Convoy Scheduled For Mother’s Day BY CATHY MOLITORIS
The Make-A-Wish Philadelphia, Delaware & Susquehanna Valley Mother’s Day Truck Convoy will roll through town on Sunday, May 9. This year’s 100-truck convoy will leave from the Manheim Pennsylvania Auto Auction at 1:30 p.m. and will run a route from Manheim through Mount Joy. “The auto auction will not be open to the public, and we won’t be
having the carnival we usually have, but there are still several ways for people to participate,” said Terry Finch, co-chair of the convoy committee. “We’ll have a livestream on our chapter’s Facebook page, and we’ll post everything also on www.wishcovoy.org. We are also going to have a drive-through chicken dinner pickup at Country Table Restaurant in Mount Joy, which is right along the route.” Preorders are being taken at the event website. Susquehanna Stage To Present “Pippin” hen Susquehanna Stage presents “Pippin” this month, be prepared for anything on stage. “Audiences can expect a broad spectrum of experiences while they watch this show,” said Gerson Malave, who plays the Leading Player. “You’ll see everything from magic on stage to life lessons.” “Pippin” follows the story of the title character and his search for meaning. “It’s about a guy who is trying to find his purpose in life,” explained Ryan Kimbark, who plays Pippin. “He wants to pursue his passion and figure out

what he’s going to do and how he fits in.” Kayleigh Jarkowsky, who plays Catherine, said “Pippin” is full of action. “It’s going to be a very visual show,” she remarked. “You’re going to see a lot of magical moments. … You’re going to be on the edge of your seat the whole time.” “Pippin” is Susquehanna Stage’s first production of 2021, and it features a cast of 22 who range in age from 15 to 18, along with one young boy who is 7. For Maddie Ciliento, who plays Fastrada, the show offers a chance to perform for the first time since the pandemic canceled live theater. “The magical aspect of this show is
what drew me to it,” she stated, adding that as a recent high school graduate, she hopes to pursue musical theater as a career. “When you come back to live theater, you don’t want your first show back to be boring. You want to make an impression, and this show does.” Ryan, who is a junior at Lancaster Mennonite High School, said even though he participated in some virtual shows over the past year, he’s excited to get back to performing in front of an audience. “I have missed live theater so much,” he noted. “There is an energy that comes from having a live audience, and that makes it so much fun.” See Pippin pg 7

Labor Day, and then Wrightsville will be highlighted in the fall, with the list series ending in November. Megan Salvatore, visitor services representative for Susquehanna NHA at Columbia Crossing, came up with the ideas on the lists. “I’m from Columbia, and I live in Marietta, so I knew where some of the cool things were,” she explained. “I knew this would be a fun way to showcase some of the unique places in our community.” Highlights of Marietta’s list include attending Marietta Day on Saturday, May 8, and visiting Shank’s Tavern to view high-water marks from floods of the past. People who participate in the series can also win prizes. “We are partnering with the local business association in each town,” Byers stated. “For the first list, the Marietta Area Business Association has put together a prize pack valued at over $200, with gift cards and swag from downtown merchants. If you do just one item on the bucket list and you submit your information on our website, you’ll be entered to win.” Participants who complete 10 items and submit their information will receive a free ice cream cone from Mulberry Thrill Sweet Treats Café, located at the rear of 100 W. It caught on so well, we decided to take it under the Susquehanna NHA umbrella and make a list for all of our river towns.” Marietta is the first town in the spotlight. Last year’s event was a scaled-down convoy of 30 drivers. “We are thrilled to be partnering with the Mother’s Day Make-AWish Truck Convoy for our second year,” said Joey Hughes, vice president/general manager of the Manheim Pennsylvania Auto Auction. “The Mother’s Day Make-A-Wish Truck Convoy is such an important fundraising event, and our team at Manheim Pennsylvania Auto Auction is so honored to host it at our location.” Money raised by the convoy helps to grant wishes to children with life-threatening illnesses. “The convoy and the events occurring with it help fund 75% of the wishes in the Susquehanna Valley,” Finch noted, adding that the event committee has a goal of raising $300,000. “In addition to coming out on the day of the event, you can visit wishconvoy.org to see all of our drivers who are fundraising and to donate to any driver you’d like to.”

The public is also invited to participate in an online auction that will run from Saturday, May 1, through Monday, May 10, at www.wishconvoy.org. “We have a lot of ‘experiences’ packages, plus gift cards to restaurants, playground equipment, trips, just a lot of fun stuff to bid on,” Finch said. “Some of the Wish children create items like birdhouses or pictures or sculptures, and those always do really well.” People are invited to cheer the convoy along the route, which can be found at https://tinyurl.com /u8ddcvrw. “There’s great viewing at LCBC Manheim campus, where they have a huge parking lot,” Finch recommended. “There’s also options to watch at the Country Table and along Main Street in Mount Joy.” The convoy committee is working on ways to include Wish children in the convoy. “Because our Wish children can’t be in public right now, we’re working on getting Wish kids on video chat to talk to the drivers,” Finch explained. “Some of them have been riding with the

Gerson, who is a junior at Donegal High School, explained that he learned about auditions at Susquehanna Stage through a friend who regularly performs with the company. “Being a part of live theater has brought me so much happiness,” he stated. “I just love it.” Director Jim Johnson said “Pippin” makes a natural choice for a cast of teens because of its themes. “It’s a story of finding fulfillment and searching for your life goals,” Johnson stated. “I think that’s very applicable to young people. They’re trying to figure out where they fit in, too.” “Pippin” also fits nicely into Susquehanna Stage’s season, which focuses on “metatheater,” or shows within shows. Upcoming productions include “Noises Off” in June. “Noises Off” was originally scheduled to be performed earlier this year, but it was postponed due to the pandemic. Because the set had already been built on the theater’s main stage, “Pippin” will be performed in the smaller gallery space at 133 W. Market St., Marietta, on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from Friday, May 14, through Sunday, May 23. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit www.susquehannastage.com.

Donegal’s Win Streak Moves to Eight Straight
Make that eight wins in a row for the Lady Indians and their sophomore pitcher Cara Biesecker, recently picking up victories over Garden Spot and ELCO. Last Wednesday the Tribe topped Garden Spot 9-1 on the road, outhitting the Spartans 12-6. Aysha Gibbs and Madeline Gohn led the hit count with three apiece, Bella Mackison added two while driving in three runs, and a hit each came from Biesecker, Natalie Colwell, Emma Garber, and Esther Myers. Biesecker’s hit was a burst of momentum in the second inning, a crushed homer to center field also scoring Myers. The sophomore also pitched all seven innings, collecting her eighth consecutive win in the circle. “She has stepped up and done a great job for us on the mound,” head coach Wayne Emenheiser said of Biesecker. “Her leadership in the circle has been great. Also, she fields her position so well defensively which is a big plus.”
The Lady Indians outplayed ELCO 13-3 last Monday at home, coming up with 12 hits in the runaway win. ELCO managed to cross two of their runs in their first at bat, but Donegal responded with a four-run frame, and then added six runs in the second to extend their advantage. Power hitters Mackison and Gohn slammed back-to-back homers in the opening inning, with Mackison’s pushing Biesecker across the plate. A double from Garber and singles from Kara Heidlauf and Myers continued the infectious hitting streak before ELCO was able to retire the side. Biesecker picked up two of her three strikeouts in the subsequent frame, complimented by an out from catcher Garber to make quick work of the Raiders and allowing the Tribe to get right back to batting-and driving in runs. Mackison finished the day with three hits and three RBIs. Gohn and Heidlauf each drove in three runs on two hits apiece, Myers had two hits and two RBIs, and Gibbs added a homerun of her own in the

fourth. Coach Emenheiser took a moment to point out just how important senior leadership has been to the overall success of the club, commending each of the team’s three seniors, Julianne Wheeler, Gibbs, and Gohn. “Senior leadership with such a young group is vital, and we have it with these three. Always taking time to help and explain things that are new,” he praised the trio. TRACK Donegal girls won their meet against Octorara on April 26th by a margin of 98-50. The races featured a slew of Donegal runners breaking the tape with wins coming from Faith Garber (100m), Anna Brubaker (200m), Amanda Fry (400m and 1600m), Sarah Hinkle (300 hurdles), Myra Naqvi (800m), and Rachel Fernald (3200m). Hinkle and Brubaker also found success in the jumping events, with Hinkle claiming the triple and Brubaker the high. Freshman Zoe Snyder made her mark on the contest with a pair of third place finishes in the hurdle events. Fellow freshman Nya Bantum gave Donegal a victory in the shot put (288.5), accompanied by a second-place effort from teammate Katherine Rupp who achieved a personal record with her 25-6.5 throw. The club also earned two relay wins over Octorara. Fry, Tabitha Clark, Marleigh Ballard, and Hadley Shoaf cruised to a 4x800 win clocking 12:32.6, and a combination of Rayahna Clerico, Garber, Lillian Stehman, and Brubaker sprinted to first in the 4x100 (55.1). The afternoon held a tightly contested 79-73 loss for the Donegal boys to visiting Octorara, but the showdown featured Donegal’s depth in throwing, only surrendering a single point in all three events. Senior Zachery Nissley had a standout performance, winning all three throwing events with his 1616 javelin, 44-3 shot put and 127-7 discus.

in relief and picked up the win, striking out one. Earlier in the week, the Tribe fell 10-1 on a Monday trip to ELCO. The Indians collected four hits in the loss, with two coming off Cannon’s bat, who drove in Donegal’s one run with a double in the top of the sixth. Small and Eckinger each supplied a hit. Eichelberger, Evans, and Brandon Coco all spent time on the mound and struck out one ELCO batter each. Eichelberger was saddled with the loss
after four and a third innings. On the 23rd, the Indians held a 3-0 lead over Twin Valley after three innings, but ultimately lost the contest 5-3. Fabian got things started on the mound, with three strike outs in four innings of work, allowing just two hits and one run. Small pitched in relief and took the loss after allowing one hit and three runs. Donegal’s five hits were supplied by Baughman, Eckinger, Cannon, Eichelberger, and Holmes.

Teammate Owen Champ took second in both shotput and discus and Ashton Robertson was the runner up in javelin. Sophomores Keaghan Cote and Caleb Kendig stepped in to supply third place finishes in the shot put and discus respectively. Kendig’s 96’ discus throw was a personal best. “The young throwers are coming along nicely,” praised head coach Bryce Sadler. Jackson Dearborn produced a double win with his 37-5.5 triple jump and 5-6 high jump, and Brock Overlander also achieved two victories, clocking a 4:42.9 in the 1600-meter race and a 10:51.1 in the 3200. Logan Fry crossed the finish first in the 800. Mark Overlander accomplished a second-place pole vault, clearing 8-6 for a new personal record. Relay success came from one Donegal foursome comprised of Sam Rothstein, Fry, Braden Bistline, and Hunter Gehman in the 4x800. “This time of the year is really exciting for us, because it’s when things begin to start clicking for the athletes. The technique starts becoming second nature and the athletes can begin to better apply what they’ve been learning during practice,” commented Sadler. “The beautiful thing about track is that it only takes one big throw, jump, run at the right moment. Anything can happen at any moment.” BASEBALL On Wednesday April 28th, Donegal hosted Garden Spot and battled their way to a come-from-behind walk off win, 7-6. The contest was 2-2 after one inning, but the Indians trailed by as much as 6-2 before rallying to once again level the scoreboard, this time 66 at the end of the seventh. Extending into extra innings, the two clubs traded scoreless frames before a walk off double from John Holmes scored AJ Small to win the ball game. Landen Baughman led the team in hits with two, and Small drove in Donegal’s first run of the contest with his single in the first. The remainder of Donegal’s hits were supplied by Colin Eckinger, Xavier Cannon, Nicholas Eichelberger, Micah Brown, and Ian Brown. Jaden Fabian started on the hill and lasted for three and a third innings, striking out two. Caden Evans pitched

At the Artisan’s Corner, attendees will find custom hand-painted wooden signs, organic elderberry syrup made with local raw honey, crocheted items, handcrafted decor, gnomes, jewelry, scrap metal art sculptures, bath bombs, candles, and blanket ladders. One hundred percent of the proceeds will go to GSS. “With COVID, people have been hit really hard this past year, so

In 2002, Good Samaritan Services (GSS) purchased its first property in Phoenixville, where it was able to serve five people at a time. Nineteen years later, GSS has acquired 13 different properties and can serve 200 people every day. GSS came to the Lancaster County area in 2011 after opening an emergency shelter in Ephrata, which provides housing for women and children. GSS provides a full continuum of care to individuals and families experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness. Some of the services offered by GSS include eviction prevention, emergency shelter, traditional housing, affordable housing, and permanent housing services across Lancaster and Chester counties. The organization’s end goal is to empower people to feel confident and capable enough to maintain their own safe and stable housing. “Our organization is unique in that we can help people with stable housing regardless of where they are in their journey,” stated GSS development and communications coordinator Shadoe Caprell. “A lot of times, people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness can’t receive
assistance from agencies unless they reach the definition of homelessness. We can fill in the cracks.” Since July 2020, GSS has served nearly 400 men, women, and children through its emergency shelter, residential housing, and housing support programs; provided nearly $90,000 in rental assistance, including 18 eviction preventions; and helped 53 individuals and families successfully complete their programs and find stable housing. “I get to meet individuals in our shelter and hear their stories,” said Caprell. “They’re all such wonderful, beautiful people. There’s such a stigma that comes with homelessness, but it’s so far from the truth. Anyone can become homeless at the drop of a dime.” Ninety-seven percent of GSS’ funding comes from community donations and fundraisers such as the annual Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC) Golf Outing. The

ELIZABETHTOWN FAIR AUGUST 23-28, 2021
For 90-year-old Barbara Mayo, the pandemic not only brought isolation from family members, but it also forced a separation between Barbara and her husband of 67 years, Devere. After having a stroke, Devere went to a rehab facility, but soon Barbara found she couldn’t visit him due to restrictions. “It was terrible,” she said, noting that she could only see Devere through a window. “He was very, very lonely and we watched (him) simply deteriorate. I felt like my world was collapsing.” Barbara prayed that an opportunity would open for the couple to move somewhere together, and she soon learned about Mount Hope, which focuses on keeping couples together if at all possible. Devere and Barbara spent five months together at Mount Hope before he passed away in January. Barbara wasn’t sure how she’d get through the days without Devere, but she now has a roommate, Marlene Campbell, with whom she prays, sings and socializes. “She is an inspiration,” Barbara said. “The days seemed long after Devere’s death. I sat on the edge of my bed and thought, ‘Is this all I’m going to do?’ Then they paired me with Marlene, and now the days disappear.” Barbara is looking forward to visiting with her family, which now includes 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, grateful that her faith has guided her through this past year. Faith is a big part of the Mount Hope community, which provides skilled nursing and rehabilitation to 50 seniors regardless of their ability to pay. To help support the ongoing ministry of Mount Hope, the public is invited to a drive-through curbside pickup meal to be held on Saturday, May 22, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the parking lot of the LCBC Manheim Campus, 2392 Mount Joy
Annual Plant Sale Slated Town and Country Garden Club of Lancaster will hold its 15th annual plant sale on Saturday, May 8, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Pavilion 1 at Manheim Township Community Park, 209 Petersburg Road, Lancaster. A variety of herbs, annuals, vegetable starter plants, houseplants, and unique perennials from members’ gardens will be available for purchase. There will also be a selection of Mother’s Day gifts. A “green” elephant table with gently used garden equipment, books, pots, and other items will be featured. All proceeds benefit the club’s Horticulture Scholarship Fund. The sale is open to the public. Attendees are asked to practice social distancing and wear a mask.

Elizabethtown Fair To Hold Chicken Barbecue BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Elizabethtown Fair board member Ann Salter invites the public to a May 8 chicken barbecue to raise money for the fair, which will be held in August.
paying for operation costs including electricity and insurance as well as premium money. “We will have some added expenses this year to be sure we’re following COVID protocols,” Nolt stated, noting that these costs include hand sanitizing stations and instructional signage throughout the fairgrounds. “Our expenses will be up, and we anticipate that our income at the fair may be down, so this fundraiser is very important to us.” The Elizabethtown Fair is celebrating its 48th anniversary this year. The fair offers animal, agricultural, competitive and commercial exhibits, as well as free nightly entertainment, rides and food. Nolt encourages anyone to come out for the barbecue and then mark
their calendars for the fair. “We rebooked all of last year’s entertainment,” she noted, adding that the fair schedule can be found at http://etownfair.org. “We are ready to go.” Advance tickets for the chicken barbecue may be purchased from Elizabethtown Fair members and friends or by calling 717-367-7256. Tickets may also be purchased at Brandt’s Farm Supply, 601 E. High St., or at Groff’s Meats, 33 N. Market St. There is a discount for tickets purchased in advance. Advance purchase is not required.

After a year when most events were canceled, the Elizabethtown Fair committee is eager to get back in action. “We’ll be doing things a little differently than past years, with masks and social distancing, but we are ready. The public is ready for the fair to come back. Everybody is ready,” said Sally Nolt, fair secretary. “It’s really exciting.” Fundraising is a big part of the preparation for the fair, which will run from Monday, Aug. 23, through Saturday, Aug. 28. The Elizabethtown Fair will hold its 35th annual chicken barbecue on Saturday, May 8, at the Elizabethtown Fairgrounds, 900 E. High St. It will run from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and will be a drivethrough pickup. The meal will include a half-chicken, donated by Wenger Feeds and prepared by Harvey’s Main Street BBQ; potato chips contributed by Herr’s; applesauce provided by Charles & Alice; a roll, donated by Pepperidge Farm; a dessert, contributed by Mars Wrigley Confectionery; and a beverage, provided by Swiss Premium Dairy Inc. Land O’Lakes will provide butter. “This is our only fundraiser for the fair,” Nolt explained. “We usually hope to raise about $10,000.” Proceeds from the barbecue will be used to cover fair expenses such as
