“Shrek” teaches message of staying true to yourself

“Thisshow is a must-see with incredible dancing and singing that will entertain all ages,” said Elliott Evans, who plays the title character in “Shrek the Musical Jr.” The show will be performed at Susquehanna Stage, 133 W. Market St., Marietta. Performances will be at 7:30 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, May 12, 13, 19 and 20, as well as at 2 p.m. on May 20 and Sundays, May 14 and 21. “Shrek” tells the story of an ogre who longs to live a solitary life in his swamp but is sent on a mission to rescue a princess, explained Cienna Kamanda, who plays Donkey. “This show follows Shrek on his journey to get his swamp

Trucking on to grant wishes

Think of the Make-A-Wish Mother’s Day Truck Convoy, and you might think of a long line of trucks traveling down the roads of Lancaster County. That is certainly central to the event, said Terry Finch, event chairperson, but that is just part of a special day.

“Our event is anchored by the Convoy trucks and our extremely generous truck drivers, but it is so much more,” Finch shared about the event that kicks off at the Manheim Pennsylvania Auto Auction. “It’s a community celebration of our Wish Children, and we hope everyone who joins us can take part in the games and fun that happens inside the Auto Auction lanes.”

back from Lord Farquaad,” Cienna shared. “Along the way, he meets the talkative and energetic Donkey and the bold and spunky Princess Fiona.”

Annika Locke, who portrays Princess Fiona, noted that the junior version of the show is a slightly shorter take on the original musical. “The only big difference is there are fewer songs, and in general, the script overall is shorter,” she said. She emphasized that the shorter version does not dampen the energy on stage. “You can expect a highenergy show - funny scenes that will hopefully make you laugh, catchy songs and a positive message,” she remarked.

Cienna shared that despite the

show’s hijinks, its message is a serious one. “It’s about being yourself and loving who you are,” she noted, adding that the cast, which includes 30 students ages 10 to 18, is a talented bunch. “Our cast has so many talented triple threats. The fairytale creatures have all given their character specific voices and traits, and the entire ensemble is absolutely phenomenal.”

The cast members encourage people to come and see the show to enjoy an uplifting message and a visually entertaining performance on stage. “‘Shrek the Musical Jr.’ is funny, heartfelt and upbeat, all at the same time,” Cienna said. Planting the seeds of a community project

Describing his own backyard in Mount Joy, Jarod Stine noted that most of it is taken up with a garden. Now Stine is helping people in the community who want to have their own gardens. Stine has created a community garden at Florin Church of the Brethren, 815 Bruce Ave., Mount Joy, and at Mount Joy Mennonite Church, 320 Musser Road. Spring planting begins this month, and both locations have availability for people who would like to have a space to grow their own food.

As Stine explained, the idea for the community garden grew out of the Getting Ahead and Staying Ahead classes that he participated in through Friends of Donegal. Both courses not only provide participants with resources to navigate life, but they also encourage community service. After taking the courses in 2021, Stine participated in discussions about starting a community garden, but people in the group weren’t sure how to pull off the project. Since he is already an avid gardener, Stine took the reins.

One Day or Day One

Laughter, a crowd cheering, or even a conversation with a friend or loved one helps to shape our lives, adding richness and texture to all our experiences. When hearing works like it should, your brain gets the rich input it needs to understand the sounds around you. But when your brain lacks access to the real sounds of life due to a hearing problem, it’s forced to work harder to fill in the gaps, which can be tiring. In addition, you could miss out on something special. Are you ready to take the first step towards better hearing? We are here for you to start day one of your journey.

This year’s Make-A-Wish Mother’s Day Truck Convoy will take place on Sunday, May 14, at the Auto Auction, 1190 Lancaster Road, Manheim. Beginning at 9 a.m., a Family Carnival will feature food trucks, carnival games, music, mascots and Make-A-Wish merchandise sales. Across Auction Road from the main building and truck lot, there will be a chicken dinner available for drive-through pickup, Finch noted. “There is also an online auction running the entire week before the Convoy and ending at midnight the next day, featuring Wish Kid art, jewelry, golf foursomes, gift cards and much more,” she shared.

The Make-A-Wish event brings independent drivers and trucking companies from all over the Susquehanna Valley as well as from across the country to participate in the festivities that raise funds needed to grant 75% of the annual wishes in the Susquehanna Valley. Make-A-Wish Philadelphia, Delaware & Susquehanna Valley grants wishes for children with critical illnesses. Over the years, the Convoy has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars. “In recent years, our record fundraising was just over $600,000,” Finch noted. “Our goal for this year is $700,000.” She said organizers are hoping for 400 trucks to participate in the Convoy this year.

“Our drivers fundraise all year long,” she explained, “and the top fundraisers in dollars earned make up the top 30 drivers in the Convoy. They are the front row of trucks and will lead out the event as they travel along the Convoy route.”

The top driver will pull the Wish Angel trailer, which is a tribute to Wish Children in the chapter area who have passed away in the 34 years since the Convoy began. “Each year, we add names to stars on the trailer before it goes on the route,” Finch remarked. “During

our 12 p.m. announcements at the stage, we also ask the top 30 drivers to put their hands on the trailer and have a moment of silence for our Wish Angels.”

When the Convoy heads out, Wish Children are invited to ride along with the

drivers, said Finch, noting that up to 100 of them have joined drivers in the past.

The route will run from Manheim to Elizabethtown and Mount Joy, and Finch encourages people to watch the Convoy along the route and cheer on the Wish Chil-

dren. She recommends viewing the Convoy at LCBC on Route 772 in Manheim, where there will be food trucks and special visitors, and anywhere along Main Street in Mount Joy. For more information, visit www.wishconvoy.org.

It was feast or famine for the Donegal Indians for their four-game stretch through LL League opponents. On Friday, April 27, they crushed Elco 15-3 only to come up short at home on Monday in a pitchers’ duel with Manheim Central. The Indians were on the short end of a 3-1 final.

Tuesday’s game at Octorara again brought out the lumber for Donegal. The Indians held the Braves to two hits in a 100 triumph. Wednesday was a different story - another close, low-scoring contest with Cocalico winning 2-1 at home.

Brock Hammaker, one of the leading hitters for Donegal, raised his batting average to .375. Coy Allman is hitting .325.

TENNIS

In the L-L League Championships, Noah Rohrer had an impressive outing at Flight Four singles, winning his first two matches before losing in the semis to Luke Main of Cocalico by an 8-1 score.

Rohrer defeated Alec Verhagen of Annville-Cleona 8-3 and edged Kyle Pawson of Lampeter-Strasburg 8-6.

The league’s championship matches were held at three different venues - the Hempfield Rec Center with rain in the forecast, Conestoga Valley, and McCaskey.

At Flight One singles, Akilan Murugesan posted a 6-3, 6-1 victory over CV’s Yuji Wenger, but lost in the second round to Kurt Chiong of Manheim Township. Murugesan finished seventh in the brackets.

He teamed up with Landon Keller in Flight One doubles. They won their first match 61, 6-1 and posted a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Nick Neustadter and Adam Good of Cocalico before bowing out in straight sets 1-6, 2-6.

Keller earned an 8-5 win at Flight Two singles, topping Cole Teaman of L-S. He came up just short to eventual flight champ Zack Taylor of Township. Taylor eked out a 9-8 win.

Bo Moose lost in the opening round of his Flight Three singles He and James Turbedsky suffered the same fate at Flight Three doubles as did Rohrer and Jeff Monchik at Flight Two doubles - firstround elimination.

TRACK

In a Monday meet with Annville-Cleona, the Donegal girls suffered a 94-56 defeat while the boys topped the Dutchmen 87-62 at Annville.

The boys’ team improved to 5-2 on the year.

“The sprinters took 47 of 54 points,” Phil Koser, the Donegal coach, noted. “Jack Brady moved into number seven on the Donegal Honor Roll for the 100-m.”

Jack Brady outran the competition in both the 110- and 300-meter hurdles.

Braden Bistline Nikita Galkin, Noah Hinkel and 400m winner Andrew Meyers teamed up to win the 4x400 relay while the foursome of

Chad Rambal, Eli Kabamba, Ayo Akinrinwoye, and 200-m winner Brody Bonham took the 4x100. Akinrinwoye, incidentally, finished second in the 200. Bonham and Rambal finished 1-2 in the 100-m.

Bistline maintained a good enough pace to take second in the 800 while Dylan Lenhart took second in the 1,600. Lenhart also took third in the 3,200.

In field events, the Indians claimed the top three spots in the long jump - Rambal, Tim Stehman and Meyers. Stehman also took second in the triple jump with Evan Donough in third place. Donough took second in the high jump.

Also going 1-2-3 in an event were pole vaulters Mark Overlander, Noah Hinkel and Trevor Engle.

Caleb Kendig earned himself two more first-place finishes in throwing events, winning the javelin and the shot put. Keaghan Cote had a solid second-place finish in the discus.

“The girls 4x800 had a come-from-behind win,” Koser said, noting the efforts of Emma Myers, Marleigh Ballard, Kathryn Fernald, and Molly Meyers.

The 4x100 girls finished

second - Faith Garber, Jayanna Morant, Peyton Mansfield, and Sophia Floyd.

Garber grabbed second in both the 100- and 200-m sprints. Addison Houck sprinted to victory in the 110 hurdles with Hannah Slobozien at second.

Slobozien also claimed third in the 300 hurdles.

In distance events, Fernald

won the 1,600 as well as the 3,200. Molly Meyers and Emma Meyers were first and second, respectively, in the 800.

In field events, Sydney Snyder won the triple jump. Nya Bantum was second place across three events - shot put, javelin and discus. Claudia Taylor took second in the pole vault.

“I hope people will learn to be able to grow their own food, because it’s really not that hard, and I think people are afraid of it sometimes,” he said. “You know during World War II, they encouraged people to grow backyard gardens, and they estimated like 50% of the food in the U.S. at the time came from backyard gardens.”

W hen people sign up to participate in the garden, they will receive a spot that is 6 by 10 feet in size. Stine will help with prepping the area and much of the weeding. He is also available to answer questions and provide guid-

ance about what to plant. This is the second season for the garden at Florin Church of the Brethren, which included tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers and lettuce last year, and the first season for the Mount Joy Mennonite Church garden.

There is a yearly charge to reserve a spot in the garden, and the season runs through the end of October. No nonorganic fertilizers or pesticides are used on the gardens, and compost is provided.

Stine said if both locations fill up this year, he might consider adding a third community garden location if he can

get some volunteers to help him with the project. In the meantime, he encourages anyone who is interested to sign up for a garden plot.

“People can always buy things from the supermarket, but I feel like if you grow your own things, it does taste a lot

better,” Stine noted. “There’s something great about picking it and eating it within a day. It’s not just nutritious, but we get a lot of benefits out of growing our own food.”

For more information or to reserve a plot, contact Stine at stinej123@gmail.com.
