Lions Club donates bench
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
When you sit on a new bench outside the Milanof-Schock Library, you are enjoying the fruits of a community effort. The bench has been donated by the Mount Joy Lions Club and was made from recycled plastic collected by the club. It’s the seventh such bench placed in the Mount Joy community, said Maria Wassell, former president of the club.
“ We wanted to have an ecology project for our club to work on, and so this is something we had seen as a project,” Wassell explained, noting that the club began collecting plastic in August of 2019. “We have about 10 places throughout the community where we collect plastic bags, and since we started, we have collected 9,500 pounds. It takes 500 pounds to make one
bench.” The club has partnered with Trex, the company that creates the benches and supplies collection containers for the plastic.
“ We can earn two benches per year,” Wassell noted. “If it were by the pound, we would have earned many more benches, but we’re limited by how many we can earn at a time.” Collection bins are located throughout Mount Joy, she said, at local businesses and churches, including Jim Roberts West Main Auto and St. Mark’s United Methodist Church. Benches have been placed by the club at Trinity Lutheran Church, by the administration building for Donegal School District and at Little Chiques Park, among other locations.
Collecting the plastic and donating the benches fits in nicely with the Lions Club’s mission, Wassell said. “The Lions’ slogan is
‘ We serve,’ so the whole idea is whatever we do, we try to serve the community,” she stated. Organizations supported by the club include the Milanof-Schock Library and Rainbow’s End Youth Services. The club also provides scholarships to Donegal High School and Lancaster County Career & Technology Center seniors.
The bench at the Milanof-Schock Library is located in the new patio area, and Wassell emphasized that it’s the result of a true community project. “We put a plaque on the back of the benches to let people know that this is a project from the Mount Joy Lions Club and the community,” she said, “because it’s the community members who have been supporting us and donating all the plastic to make the bench possible.”

The festival will be held at the Marietta Community House, 264 W. There’s something comforting about a lasagna. That’s the message behind Lasagna Love, an international organization that began in 2020 during the height of the pandemic, recruiting volunteers to make and deliver lasagnas to people in need.
Sandi Mauer, coordinator of Lasagna Love for Lancaster County, said the organization is looking for volunteers, as well as people who would like to receive a lasagna.
“ We are here to help anyone in
need, and there’s no judgment whatsoever,” Mauer stated. “The goal of the program is to feed families, spread kindness and strengthen communities.”
Mauer began volunteering with Lasagna Love last summer, and she soon found out that the county coordinator for the program didn’t live locally. She stepped up to organize efforts in the area, and lasagnas are currently delivered throughout Lancaster County by Lasagna Love volunteers.
“People can sign up for a lasagna

if they have any need,” Mauer explained, adding that people can sign up at https://lasagna love.org/request. “It could be a financial need or a health issue or an emotional need, or anyone who just needs a break from life for a moment. They can request a lasagna, and then we match them up with a volunteer who will deliver it. We don’t turn anyone down for any reason.”
Mauer noted that Lasagna
Donegal School District is soliciting sealed bids to purchase a shed built by our construction technology students.
The shed is 8’x10’. Sealed bids must be received by the District by 3:00 p.m., June 8, 2023.
Love is a great program to volunteer with, because volunteers can set their own schedules. “If you only want to do one lasagna a month, you can do that,” she remarked. “If you only want to make a lasagna one time, you can do it one time and be done. If you want to do four lasagnas a month, one every week, you can do that, too. You can also set up your own delivery radius and drive as far or as close as you
want to deliver.” She noted that there are options to make meat or vegetarian lasagnas and that lasagnas can be delivered unbaked or baked.
Lasagna Love began in 2020 when Rhiannon Menn founded the organization in San Diego to spread kindness through home-cooked meals.
The successful bidder will be notified on June 9. Pickup/delivery is the responsibility of the successful bidder and will be the week of June 12-15.
For more information about the shed and complete instructions about submitting a bid, please visit the Donegal SD website: www.donegalsd.org
(click on Bids at the bottom of the page)
Mauer noted that a study of more than 30,000 people who have received lasagnas revealed the impact of the program. “Ninety-eight percent of the recipients said that they were inspired to pay it forward, and 21% had already done so within just a few days of receiving their lasagna,” she noted, adding that they didn’t necessarily make another lasagna, but did something for somebody else. “I really love the ripple effect of this project. It just makes me feel good to participate in this project.” She also noted that quite often people who have been recipients of a lasagna become volunteers working for the organization.
Mauer, who says she enjoys cooking, noted that people do not have to be professional chefs to make a lasagna. “I follow different Lasagna Love groups on Facebook, and I’ll see there are new people signing up to do it who say they’ve never made a lasagna before in their life,” she stated. “You don’t have to have any real cooking skills. You just have to be able to throw a lasagna together, and you just need to have a desire to want to help people.”

Donegal softball posts 7-5 District opening win
BY ARA GRIGORIAN
The Donegal softball team had made it past the first round of its Lancaster-Lebanon League playoffs by beating Ephrata 4-3. It was a comeback win that head coach Wayne Emenheiser had referred to as “a great team win.”
Though the Indians fell out of their bid to claim the league trophy, their 18-2 record had already earned them a fourth seed in the District Three Class 5A playoffs. On Monday, the Indians played host to New Oxford, the 13th seed.
The Colonials took advantage of some Donegal errors and scored three unearned runs off Indians
pitcher Cara Biesecker. But just like the Ephrata game, the Indians came through as a team, scoring five late runs and holding on for a 7-5 win.
Bella Mackison not only slugged a homer, but she also drove in a run on a sacrifice fly, showing the team attitude of getting things done. Grace Graham also homered and had three runs batted in. Ruth Myers had a single and a walk, stole two bases and scored two of the runs her teammates were driving in. Emma Garber went 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI.
The win gave Donegal a spot in the district quarterfinals. The top four teams from the district qualify
f or the PIAA Class 5A state playoffs.
BASEBALL
All season long, the Indians have been fortunate to have quality pitching. Whether it was a 10-2 blowout, a 2-1 win or even a heartbreaking 2-1 loss despite a good pitching performance, the common aspect of games was usually good pitching.
As the District Three Class 5A baseball playoffs got underway on Friday, May 19, the Indians traveled to Mechanicsburg for a game against the sixth-seeded Wildcats.
“Absolutely a tough loss,” Jeff Hartman, the Donegal head coach, said of the 2-1 defeat. “Jaden
Fabian pitched very well again. We just came up short to a very good Mechanicsburg team.”
The Indians’ season ends with a 13-8 record. They look toward next season - some returning and some shoes to fill. Fabian, along with fellow seniors Landon Baughman, Alex Eisenberger, Caden Evans, Darren Ortman and Landon Robertson will not be returning.
“It’s always tough when it’s over,” said Hartman. “Our seven seniors gave us all they had. I’m very proud of them. They will all be missed.”
TRACK & FIELD
Phil Koser and the Donegal track & field athletes who qualified for
the District Three 3A Championships traveled to Shippensburg University for the two-day event, Friday and Saturday, May 19-20.
“ We had seven individual [events] and a relay make District Three AAA,” Koser said. “This is actually quite an accomplishment because it is not like team sports where you can get in with a .500 record.”
The relay team was the 4x800meter quartet of Emma Myers, Marleigh Ballard, Kathryn Fernald, and Molly Myers. They competed on Saturday.
“They improved their seed perf ormance from 16th to finish 15th,” Koser pointed out.
“Also on Friday, Kathryn Fernald ran the 3200-meter race and finished just three seconds off her best in 12:32.53,” Koser pointed out. “She finished 12th overall and had come in seeded 17th.
“Kathryn had a great race,” Koser added. “She has been on target to run her best of the season through six laps. She struggled a bit on the last two laps. She might be able to get the school record of 11:11 next year.”
Mark Overlander had an excellent pole vault performance, finishing ninth with a 13-foot-3 vault.
“He improved his overall standing to finish ninth,” said Koser. “It was his season-best performance. He had three great attempts at 139 for the school record.
“Mark has had a great season,” continued the coach. “I know he would love to improve upon it next year.”
Seniors Sophia Floyd and Faith Garber ran against tough, fast competition in the 100-m dash.
“There were many really fast athletes this year,” said Koser. “Faith ran a solid race in the prelims and made the semi-finals with a great race into the wind.
“Although Faith didn’t make the finals, she finished 13th overall - nine places ahead the spot she came in with. Although Sophia and [boys 100m] Brody Bonham didn’t run as fast as they had hoped for, they each rounded out a great season.”
In the 800-m, Molly Myers set a school record. She placed 11th, running at a 2:21.14 clip.

Luthercare presents scholarships
Luthercare recently awarded $18,000 in scholarships to help advance the education of local graduating high school seniors who are pursuing careers in nursing. The recipients had distinguished themselves through their written
essay, letters of reference, and passion for the field.
One-time, $5,000 scholarships were presented to Annika Bollinger of Cocalico High School and Tori Heiserman of Lampeter-Strasburg High School.
A special one-time, $3,000 scholarship, the Mary Roth Nursing Scholarship, was awarded to Vanessa Russo of Northern Lebanon High School. The scholarship was named in memory of Mary Roth, a longtime Lititz and
Luther Acres resident who passed away in 2019 at age 95. Her sister, who is also a resident of Luther Acres, wanted to find a meaningful way to recognize what would have been Mary’s 100th birthday this year and chose to help fund the education of a future nurse by setting up the scholarship.
One-time, $1,000 scholarships were awarded to Kyra Bixler of Garden Spot High School; Sydney Brubaker of Donegal High School; Isabel Harnish of Annville-Cleona High School; Sophia Lutz of Lancaster Country Day School; and Savannah Stauffer of Ephrata Senior High School.
The winners will continue their education and professional development at Clemson University, Lebanon County Career and Technology Center, Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences, Villanova University, and York College of Pennsylvania.

Mt. Hope will mark birthday
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Mt. Hope Nazarene Retirement Community will celebrate its 54th birthday, and you’re invited to the party. The facility, which provides care for seniors and people with disabilities regardless of their ability to pay, will host a “Love Mt. Hope Giving Day” on Friday, June 2, which marks the community’s birthday, as well as an old-fashioned community picnic on Saturday, June 17.
“The one-day give is a chance to pay it forward, and together, we can change lives,” said Kris Wilson, director of advancement at Mt. Hope. “On this one-day giving challenge, generous gifts make an impact today and for the future.” Donations may be made online at
https://mthopenazarene.org or by mail to the retirement community. For details on how to donate by mail, contact Wilson at advancement@ mthopenazarene.org.
“ We encourage people to help us reach our one-day goal of $20,000,” Wilson remarked, adding that a few anonymous donors have pledged to match donations dollar-for-dollar up to $10,000.
The community is also invited to the picnic, which will be held from 5 to 7 p.m., rain or shine, at Mt. Hope. “We are so excited to host an event on our campus again,” Wilson shared.
“In the past, Mt. Hope always invited the community out for a summer picnic in June and a fall harvest fest in October, but we have not been able to do an
in-person event since the summer of 2019 due to limitations and regulations on nursing homes surrounding the coronavirus.”
She encourages everyone to come out and enjoy the landscaped grounds of the retirement community while spending time with friends and family. “This is also a warm invitation for anyone who wants to see where we are located, hear about who we are, the work we do and relax in the rolling farming countryside of Manheim,” she added.
Mt. Hope’s old-fashioned summer picnic meal will include a choice of grilled burgers or chicken sandwiches, with the meat donated by Elstonville Sportsman’s Association in Manheim. Other picnic meal items will include Mt. Hope’s famous baked beans, chips, cookies and assorted drinks. Music will be provided at the picnic by Mark Shaw of the Lancaster County-based Celtic/Irish band Boys From Innisfree.
John Wagner, a longtime Manheim community resident and former Mt. Hope board member, described Mt. Hope as one of Lancaster County’s best-kept secrets. “My mother was there for almost 27 years until she passed at the age of 104,” Wagner shared.
“Mother was well cared for and enjoyed the pleasant surroundings and loving staff. The meals were exceptional, and she loved it.” He added that Mt. Hope prioritizes caring for those in need of financial assistance as well as physical care.
“That’s why their mission statement is ‘to minister to the least of these,’” he said.
There is a suggested minimum donation for each picnic meal. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs and blankets. The event will be held outside only, with outside restrooms available. Proceeds will support the residents of Mt. Hope. To reserve a meal, contact Wilson at advancement@mthope nazarene.org or call 717-682-8026.

“This is our favorite outreach event because we are able to bring so many people together, both exhibitors
and visitors, that share a passion for clean water and an excitement for taking measures to be good stewards of our local environment,” said Steve Gergely,
describing the Chiques Creek Watershed Alliance’s Watershed Expo. “Having families and children attend is also great to introduce young people to their local environment in a fun way. There are numerous handson activities that keep everyone engaged.”
The expo will be held on Wednesday, June 7, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the Manheim Farm Show Complex, 502 E. Adele Ave.
“A variety of environmental organizations will have display tables,” said Gergely, who is the president of the Chiques Creek Watershed Alliance. “The theme is ‘Environmental and Watershed Stewardship.’ We’ll also have a fish shocking demonstration from the Lancaster County Conservation District, fish-print T-shirt making, a creekside macroinvertebrate lesson from the Lancaster County Parks Department, tours of the recently renovated Memorial Park and floodplain restoration project, rain barrel painting and a giveaway, water

Gergely said the Alliance is especially excited to offer tours of the completed floodplain restoration project. “Hosting the expo directly adjacent to the park could not be a better way to demonstrate positive things that are happening in our watershed,” he remarked.
He encourages everyone to come out to the expo, noting, “Visitors can expect to have a nice family evening out by the Chiques Creek, where they can socialize and interact with various exhibitors. And they can expect to learn new things and to hopefully be
inspired.”
Gergely added that people who wish to participate in the macroinvertebrate lesson in the creek should bring shoes and clothes that can get wet. For more information on the expo, search for “Chiques Creek

Watershed Expo
Environmental organizations will have information tables at the Chiques Creek Watershed Alliance Watershed Expo.
Funding will benefit Girls on the Run
With aims to combat health disparities and advance fitness and friendships among adolescent girls, Rite Aid Healthy Futures has renewed its partnership with Girls on the Run (GOTR) through a $1 million grant supporting the organization’s continued inclusion, diversity, equity and access (IDEA) work. The announcement comes as local GOTR councils prepare for their end-of-season 5Ks.
GOTR’s experience-based curriculum integrates running to inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident. The organization currently operates 171 local councils across the United States and Canada, serving nearly 200,000 girls annually.
The recent funding marks the third year of partnership between GOTR and Rite Aid Healthy Futures, the public charity affiliated with Rite Aid. The grant supports the two organizations’ shared commitment to strengthening and empowering local communities.
The $1 million grant will benefit the GOTR headquarters as well as the 50 local councils in Healthy Futures’ footprint, with funding focused on the continued development of GOTR’s IDEA program. In particular, GOTR is focused on reaching girls from underserved communities, promoting a culture of inclusion across the organization, building a culturally competent curriculum and increasing local resources in key communities.
Local councils will use the funds to diversify their coaching staff, increase program access f or girls of color and further enhance programming that acknowledges the needs and realities of their communities. Funds will also go to strengthening the organization’s core programming and training while supporting sustainability across local councils, many of which are still recovering from the impacts of COVID-19.
The partnership between Healthy Futures and GOTR was established in 2020, with an initial grant of $1 million supporting programming during the pandemic. The 2020 grant contributed to GOTR’s swiftly adapting services and programming to serve girls meaningfully and safely during the pandemic.
Together with donors, Rite Aid associates, community partners and neighbors, Rite Aid Healthy Futures, formerly known as the Rite Aid Foundaion, has donated more than $15 million a year to causes, initiatives and organizations that make a difference in people’s lives.
