4-H Participants Present A Showcase Of Strawberries By Dayna M. Reidenouer
One of the goals of 4-H is to prepare young people for the future. Thanks to recent weather, some 4-H members who raised strawberries learned firsthand about the ups and downs of growing produce. On June 5, the Rotary Club of Lancaster hosted the annual 4-H Strawberry Roundup at the Farm and Home Center. Ten youths ranging between ages 8 and 19 entered the best berries from their patches for adjudication. Well, some of them did. “Not all of them ended up with berries because of the weather,” explained Lori Little, 4-H Extension educator. Too much rain and several bouts of hail hampered the crops. The timing of the event also impacted the results. Project leader Ralph
Ellenberger of Mount Joy noted that several growers had excellent crops the week before the roundup, but their plants had slowed production or quit producing altogether by June 5. “Some will be early, and others will be late,” he said pragmatically. “It’s a good learning experience for the kids,” said Michelle Anger of Maytown. Her daughters Gabby and Gracelynn are part of the Mount Joy Community 4-H Club and are raising strawberries. “There are a lot of life lessons: finances, hope, and disappointment,” Michelle added. Professional grower John Shenk evaluated the berries on flavor and looked for uniform size and color. “It’s nicer to have larger (berries), but it’s not necessary,” Shenk commented. “I think customers will come back for flavor.” See Strawberries pg 9

an online application, they receive a link to an orientation video that provides information on the shelter and how to safely move animals in and out of the kennels. After successfully passing a short quiz, the volunteers are scheduled for individual training with a staff member. Pupventures was created to help to reduce kennel stress and to provide dogs with enrichment and increased visibility in hopes that they will be adopted, said Pennsylvania SPCA public relations director Gillian Kocher. “These outings give the shelter valuable insight on how the dogs behave outside a shelter environment. It’s also a great excuse to spend a day doing something new or exploring what Lancaster and the surrounding area have to offer,” Kocher explained. “Similar programs at shelters across the country have been enormously successful, and the Pennsylvania SPCA Lancaster Center is excited to introduce this to the area. We invite the public to be on the lookout for our pups in the community, (accompanied by volunteers who will be) posting photos on social media and helping the adoptables find their families.” The Pennsylvania SPCA is one of 100 shelters nationwide that is participating in the Arizona State University/Virginia Tech Maddie’s Nationwide Fostering Study. Virginia Tech assistant professor Erica Feuerbacher noted that the study will assess the effects of fostering for shelter dogs and the shelters themselves. While experienced dog owners are preferred, Golub noted that everyone is welcome to volunteer, as all types of dogs are typically available, ranging from low maintenance to highly rambunctious. “Even if someone is inexperienced with dogs, we should have a dog they can walk,” she said. Only dogs available for adoption are able to go on field trips. Each canine is put through a behavior assessment and a personality assessment based on the American SPCA’s Meet Your Match program. Before handing over the leashes, Golub and her staff members ensure that volunteers are qualified and prepared for the responsibility of caring for a dog, even if it is just for a few hours. Veterans from pg 1 Approximately 50 veterans gathered for a free breakfast and Memorial Day program hosted by Friends In Action Intl. (FIA) at the organization’s Middletown headquarters on May 25. FIA works in extremely remote areas of the world where there is little infrastructure. The 501(c)(3) organization uses construction projects as a platform to share the Gospel. Veterans from every branch of
the armed forces were present. While the majority in the audience were Army Vietnam veterans, the gathering also included one Korean War soldier and three Operation Enduring Freedom veterans. The Veterans Appreciation Breakfast included remarks from Tim Johnston, FIA’s executive director. Attendees enjoyed a buffet of bacon, eggs, pancakes, sausage casserole, fruit and
muffins while hearing from two Vietnam veterans. These speakers were Spc. Bob Rummel, a rifleman and radio operator from the 101st Airborne Division, and Col. James S. Weaver Jr. Additionally, multiple veterans spontaneously took the microphone to share their own stories of how they were treated immediately following the Vietnam War, as well as their combat experiences and their healing since their service. During the program, attendees also recited the Pledge of Allegiance led by Kamille Peachey of State College, heard Lily Medich of York recite “In Flanders Fields,” and joined Liberty Peachey of State College in singing “God Bless America.” The event closed with Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless the U.S.A.,”
during which every individual stood to honor the fallen. Guests left with goodie bags and door prizes of memorial wreaths and patriotic arrangements. All will be invited back to attend FIA’s annual banquet on Friday, Nov. 1, at Best Western Premier The Central Hotel & Conference Center in Harrisburg. More information about the event will be posted at www.fiaintl.org. Readers are invited to view photos from the Veterans Appreciation Breakfast at www.face book.com/FriendsInAction/. Students then took to the stage to act out stories and share songs. Closing their visit, students conversed with residents. The students plan to return again next year. to participate in other outdoor games, make crafts, hear stories, and enjoy snacks. Numerous adults and older youths will be on hand to interact with the children and to direct the activities. In the case of rain, organizers will adjust activities to being indoors in the church’s multipurpose room. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to register children in advance by calling Marietta Community Chapel at 717-4264584 or emailing marietta chapel@gmail.com by Wednesday, July 3. However, children are still welcome to attend even if they have not preregistered. Registration information needed will include each child’s name
phone number, and an email address to send a liability form to fill out. The liability waiver must be signed by a parent or legal guardian prior to the child’s participation. Children should wear closedtoe shoes and comfortable clothes for playing soccer. Harnish said this marks the seventh year that Marietta Community Chapel has offered the Just For Kicks program with the purpose of being a positive influence in the community and providing a place for children to have fun. “It is good for all of us to spend quality time outdoors, getting some exercise and interacting with new and old friends alike,” remarked Harnish.

Strawberries from pg 1 The entrants were divided by experience. The berries exhibited by Amanda Ellenberger of Mount Joy netted her the grand champion ribbon in the older group, and Gabby received the same honor in the younger group. The reserve grand champions were Justin Zimmerman of Elizabethtown and Callison Miller of Manheim, respectively. All of the strawberries were auctioned off to Rotary members. The Keller family has run the auction for 54 years and twice sold a quart of berries for $600. Amanda’s berries nearly reached that amount, selling for $550. Gabby’s berries sold for the second-highest amount: $225. As the proceeds from the auction went back to each exhibitor, the growers who had no berries to enter were given strawberry pies to sell. Several of the pies were accompanied by gift certifi-
cates for dinner that evening at The Loft. Additionally, the proceeds of two pies went to the Max Smith Scholarship Fund, and the Rotary club presented a $750 check to Little for the fund. Bad weather aside, both Shenk and Ralph noted that the number of entrants has declined in recent years. Shenk entered the roundup as a child, and he recalls competing against at least two dozen other young people. “Fewer kids live on farms,” Ralph pointed out. “They have less space for a garden. It’s a challenge to get the quantity of strawberries (needed for the roundup).” The roundup provides growers with the opportunity to have their fresh berries evaluated. When all of the community clubs come together for the showcase in August, the growers will submit other strawberry-related projects. First-year members, who have spent the spring and

Library Programs from pg 8 summer weeding and mulching their plants in preparation for a crop the following year, will enter posters. The older members can make things like recipe or trivia cards or enter carefully tended potted plants. While giving his reasons for ranking the berries, Shenk gave some tips about raising strawberries. “Usually the first harvest is the best, but you can keep them for three years if they’re managed well,” he said. After the harvest is over, the plants should be mowed and the rows narrowed so there is room for the plants to grow back. “From Labor Day to the first hard freeze, the cells are deciding which will be berries and which will be leaves,” Shenk said. “It’s not too late (to plant now) for next year. Just make sure they have enough water to encourage them.” For more information about 4-H, readers may contact Little at 717-394-6851 or lmh12@psu.edu.
