Couple To Bicycle Across Country By Chelsea Peifer

Steinweg and Collins will be on the road for approximately 60 days to cover a total of 4,200 miles - all while carrying their own tents, sleeping bags, and other supplies. “We weren’t sure when we would get to do it, because there are three main things you need to do a trip like this: time, money, and health,” explained Collins. “But we both had time off and everything else just See Lifecycles pg 6

As she and her husband, Mike, grieved the loss of their son, a co-worker whose daughter had experienced the loss of a child through a miscarriage told Michelle about Sarah’s Laughter, a nonprofit that offers faith-based support to couples struggling with infertility or the death of a baby. Since no groups were meeting locally then, Michelle signed up to receive emails from the organization, and as time See Sarah’s Laughter pg 5

organize around their resources to create a safer, healthier home. With an emphasis on holistic fun, activities at “Where the Wild Things Grow” will include foraging for wild food, playing in the stream, tracking and observing wildlife, growing and harvesting sprouts and microgreens, and investigating the natural world. To register for the program, interested individuals may visit https://hornfarmcenter.org/whe re-the-wild-things-grow. There is a set cost. Since activities will be outdoors in all weather, participants should dress accordingly and bring a backpack of appropriate supplies such as sunscreen, bug spray, and towels. The Horn Farm Center will also host a three-day adventure in Junior Naturalist Training from Monday, July 29, to Wednesday, July 31. Environmental educator Elyse Jurgen will guide students through activities in age-appropriate groups. Building Backyard Habitats, designed for students ages 9 to 11, will be held from 9 to 11:30 a.m., and Building Community Habitats, designed for students ages 12 to 14, will be held from 12:30 to 3 p.m. In Building Backyard Habitats, younger students will explore the farm through the eyes of their favorite critters. By gathering found materials on the grounds, participants will design a model of their creature’s habitat. Students can take these skills home to support wildlife in their own backyards. In Building Community Habitats, older students will collaborate with fellow naturalists to design a simulated “Horn Farm village” community master plan that meets the food, water, and shelter needs of both wildlife and people. Students will conduct a BioBlitz scavenger hunt on the farm grounds to gather baseline biodiversity data, then propose a solution for improving the area’s ecological health. Participants should come ready to think deeply and solve real-life problems facing today’s communities. Junior Naturalists are invited - though not required - to bring a smartphone to participate in the BioBlitz activity, and they may download the iNaturalist app to get started. To register for the Junior Naturalist Training, interested individuals may visit https://hornfarmcenter.org /youth-programs/. Anyone with questions may call 717-332-8710 or email educationdirector@hornfarm center.org. The Horn Farm in Hellam Township has been continuously farmed for more than 250 years. The Horn Farm Center for Agricultural Education was established as a nonprofit at the Horn Farm in 2004. In 2016, a conservation easement was placed on the property, thus preserving the farm in perpetuity. The Horn Farm Center is committed to building and growing a healthy community through hands-on farming, gardening, and food preparation experiences.

Pennsylvania SPCA Receives Grant The Pennsylvania SPCA has announced that it has been recognized by the Bissell Pet Foundation to receive a grant. The grant, which totals $10,025, will be used to alter (spay/neuter) adoptable animals at the organization’s Erie Avenue headquarters and Danville and Lancaster centers throughout the month of July. Every animal that is adopted from the Pennsylvania SPCA, regardless of location, is altered prior to leaving the facility, is upto-date on vaccines, and is microchipped. The Pennsylvania SPCA has been helping animals in Philadelphia and throughout the state dating back to its founding in

1867 to protect horses. Today, the organization continues to rescue animals from cruelty and neglect, extending its reach throughout the state. Within the last year, the Pennsylvania SPCA has added low-cost spay/neuter services to both its Lancaster and Danville locations. Erie Avenue has long been providing the service as an affordable option to Philadelphia and the surrounding region. For more information about adopting, donating, or volunteering, readers may call 215-426-6300 or visit www.pspca.org. she said. “I knew how much I struggled with my losses, and I didn’t want anyone to walk through that alone.” Any woman who is experiencing infertility or grief related to miscarriage or stillbirth is welcome to attend a meeting of Sarah’s Laughter - Lancaster on the second Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. at Community Fellowship Church, 200 Bethel Drive, Lancaster. “As women, (having children) is sort of a thing we expect we will be able to do, and when it doesn’t work the way it’s supposed to, it can be easy to feel shame. There are so many different scenarios, but we all have stuff in common and having those sort of ‘me too’ moments can be so helpful,” shared Michelle. “It’s the validation of having someone say, ‘I’ve thought that too. You’re not crazy.’ That validation lifts a weight off your shoulders.” In 2018, Michelle was thrilled to find out she was pregnant, but on May 24, 2018, the McGoverns’ daughter, Juliet Rose, was born still. They miss her greatly and continue to navigate that grief on a daily basis. Michelle encourages people who know someone experiencing infertility or child loss not to ignore it or pretend that it is not happening. “If you’re not sure what to say, just say, ‘I don’t know what to say because I don’t want to hurt you, but I want you to know that I care. I remember what you’re going through.’ And check in once in a while.” “One thing I say (at Sarah’s Laughter) is that we don’t compare,” said Michelle, emphasizing that no matter what a woman’s story may be or where she is in her journey, she is welcome. “Walking through that door is the hardest part, but you’re not alone.” For more information on Sarah’s Laughter - Lancaster, readers may visit www.face book.com/SarahsLaughterLancaster or www.sarahs-laughter.com/lancaster countypa.

went on she more or less forgot about Sarah’s Laughter. Michelle gave birth to her daughter, Violet, in 2012, with no complications. “She was a picture-perfect pregnancy,” noted Michelle. Her labor and delivery with Violet went quickly something that Michelle laughs about now because of how much it reflects her daughter’s enthusiastic personality. In 2015 and 2016, however, Mike and Michelle suffered the loss of two children through miscarriages and again waded through the immense sorrow that accompanies such losses. To honor the legacy of Liam, as well as their other children, and to help other couples experiencing the loss of a child through stillbirth, the McGoverns donated a Cuddle Cot to The Women’s Place at Heart of Lancaster in 2016 and another to Women & Babies Hospital in 2017. “We did the two Cuddle Cot donations, but I wanted to do something more regularly (to help other women),” Michelle said. As Michelle rediscovered Sarah’s Laughter and began regularly listening to the organization’s podcast, which features interviews with people who understand infertility and child loss, she began to consider starting a group in Lancaster. “(Sarah’s Laughter founder) Beth Forbus will say on the podcast, ‘If you’re thinking about starting a group in your town, get in touch with us,’” Michelle said. “I told Mike, ‘I don’t think I can NOT do this now.’” So in September 2017, Michelle bravely took the plunge to start a local Sarah’s Laughter infertility and child loss support group. “I knew that there had to be a need,”

came into place, so we’re really excited to be going now.” Steinweg, 22, graduated from Manheim Central High School in 2015 and from Messiah College in May with a degree in biology. Steinweg is in the process of applying to physician assistant graduate programs. Collins, 24, graduated from Lebanon Valley College with his Doctor of Physical Therapy degree in May and decided to delay his job search a bit so he and Steinweg could bike across the country. Collins, who completed a portion of this bicycling journey with a friend a few years ago, noted, “It’s really amazing some of the people you’ll meet along the way.” For Collins, that included someone trying to set a record while riding a unicycle and members of a group from Harvard University who were using bicycle touring to travel into various parts of the country to teach at-risk children. As Steinweg and Collins ride, they will be raising awareness of and money for Lifecycles, a mentoring program based in Lancaster County that uses bicycling as a means to instill character in young adults. “We wanted to use this trip as an opportunity to raise money for an organization that brings honor to God,” Steinweg shared. “We wanted to make it bigger than just ourselves.” Volunteers from Lifecycles lead weekly rides for teenage boys in Landisville, Marietta, and New Holland and for girls in Lititz. A free meal is served, and bicycles, helmets, and shirts are supplied for all participants. Plus, Lifecycles organizes annual summer challenge rides for participants.

Lifecycles leaders are planning to embark on a cross-country bicycle tour with a group of boys next summer. Steinweg and Collins are hoping that their own journey will inspire those riders as they train and prepare. “We want to show them that anyone can do it,” said Collins. Training for Steinweg and Collins has mostly consisted of lots of bicycle rides. Meals will generally be purchased from gas station convenience stores, with the occasional sit-down meal to refuel. Generators that attach to and are powered by bicycle wheels will enable Steinweg and Collins to keep their phones charged. The pair plans to utilize an app called Warm Showers that connects bicycle tourists worldwide with hosts that offer free hospitality - whether a place to wash up, get a beverage, or spend the night. “A lot of churches will open up their doors too, letting cyclists utilize their youth centers or other spaces like a hostel,” Collins noted. The cross-country ride is not the first incredible physical feat for either Steinweg or Collins, who first met while competing in the annual Lititz recCenter adult triathlon. Collins got hooked on triathlons in high school and recently accomplished an Ironman. Steinweg began doing triathlons during college and completed the Boston Marathon in 2018. The two are planning a May 2020 wedding. To donate toward the couple’s campaign for Lifecycles, readers may visit www.gofundme.com/coast-to-coast -campaign-for-lifecycles. U-GRO Learning Centres has unveiled its new Masonic Village facility. Through collaborations with the Masonic Village and Elizabethtown College, U-GRO Masonic Village offers both intergenerational programming and an expanded lab school learning environment in which Elizabethtown College education students observe and teach. Featuring 10 classrooms, a 2,000square-foot indoor play space, and a 13,500-square-foot outdoor play area, the facility replaces Masonic Village’s existing 7,000-square-foot building, where U-GRO assumed operations in June 2018. The new facility includes enhanced educational and play features, including educational technology that uses SMART Boards and iPads; giant walls dedicated to helping children with word, color, and shape recognition; and expanded gross motor areas for crawling, running, and jumping. The transition to the new center, located at the Shrine Road entrance to the Masonic Village campus, marks a $3 million investment. The facility includes classrooms for up to 148 children, including preschoolers, toddlers, and infants starting at six weeks of age. A private, full-day kindergarten is also offered, as well as before-school and after-school

programs and summer camp. Masonic Village is repurposing the former location into retirement living apartments for residents, while the new center’s location provides more convenient access for Elizabethtown-area families. The center employs about 30 full-time employees plus seasonal college interns. Weekly interaction with senior residents at the campus is included in the center’s curriculum, through its partnership with Masonic Village. Elizabethtown College’s Department of Education’s Laboratory School Program and U-GRO’s lab school learning environment will offer increased opportunities for college students to observe and teach in U-GRO’s Early Learning classrooms. Rachel Finley-Bowman, dean of the School of Continuing and Professional Studies and associate professor of education at Elizabethtown, and Greg Holsinger, president and CEO of U-GRO, co-founded the lab school program in 2014. Now accepting fall enrollments with limited availability, U-GRO Learning Centres offers infant, toddler, preschool, and before-school and after-school programs at 13 locations for more than 1,750 children daily. For more information, readers may visit www.u-gro.com.

Elizabethtown friends Anthony Cicero IV, 18, and Dakota Snyder, 17, have both been fishing since they could walk and like to spend as much time as they can on the Susquehanna River and at area lakes catching fish. All of that time and practice paid off when they put their skills to the test at The Bass Federation (TBF) Student Angler Federation’s (SAF) 10th annual High School Fishing World Finals in Florence, Ala., and won first place. Cicero and Snyder were among 389 high school teams from across the country competing at Pickwick Lake. The competition began on June 19, and the field was cut to 31 teams for the final day on June 22. Winners were determined by the heaviest final-day weight. The Elizabethtown duo caught three bass weighing in at a total of 16 pounds, 6 ounces, that led them to earn the prestigious title of 2019 High School Fishing World Finals champions. “It felt awesome, like we were on top of the world,” said Cicero. Cicero and Snyder edged out their closest competitors, second-place winners Griffin Phillips and Fletcher Phillips of Mount Olive, Ala., by 1 pound, 9 ounces. Every fishing squad consisted of two high school anglers and one adult boat captain. Snyder said that at first, with nearly 400 boats out on the water, the lake felt crowded. On the final day of competition, they had a bit more space to navigate when the boats headed out at 5:30 a.m. Fishing commenced at 6 a.m., and the teams were allowed to continue fishing for bass until 1:15 p.m. Live bait and trolling - a method of leaving multiple baited lines in the water - were not permitted. From their prior days on the lake, the duo had determined a specific shallower spot - ranging from 8 inches to five feet - to fish from for the final round. Both young men caught their personal all-time best: Snyder with a bass weighing in at 6 pounds, 5 ounces, and Cicero

with a largemouth bass weighing 7 pounds, 7 ounces, that earned Big Bass honors for the day. “Working as a team really helped us,” noted Snyder. The prizes awarded to the champions included their choice of scholarship offers from Bethel University in McKenzie, Tenn.; Simpson University in Redding, Calif.; or Kentucky Christian University in Grayson, Ky., to fish on the college fishing team. Cicero, who is the son of Anthony and Kim Cicero of Elizabethtown, graduated from Elizabethtown Area High School (EAHS) this year and had been planning to work. With the significant scholarship options on the table, he is now considering attending one of the schools. Snyder, the son of Mark and Nicole Snyder of Elizabethtown, will be a senior at EAHS in the fall and is undecided on his post-graduation plans. In addition to the scholarship offers, the teammates each received a 50-inch television, a dozen fishing rods, and other fishing merchandise and clothing. There were so many prizes, in fact, that when it came time to pack everything up to return to Pennsylvania, Cicero said everything barely fit in the vehicle they had driven. Both Cicero and Snyder learned the sport of fishing from their fathers, who are also avid fishermen. Aside from spending as much time practicing as possible, Snyder advises younger fishermen to watch videos online for tips and techniques to improve their skills. “Stick to your gut, and just have fun. That’s the most important thing,” said Cicero. To view the complete results from the event, readers may visit https://highschoolfishing.org.

KPB Receives $10,000 Grant Family Will Hold Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful (KPB) received a $10,000 grant from Keep America Beautiful to continue its work with the Keep America Beautiful Cigarette Litter Prevention Program (CLPP), the nation’s largest program aimed at reducing cigarette litter. This is the ninth year that KPB received funding from the national organization. Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful will partner with the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) focusing on Pennsylvania State Parks with recreational lakes and tributaries to the Delaware River and Bay. The parks included in the 2019 CLPP grant are Benjamin Rush, Nockamixion, Ridley Creek, and Tyler state parks. To combat against litter, the program advocates that participating communities use four approaches: encourage enforcement of litter laws, including

cigarette litter; raise awareness about the issue; place ash receptacles in places like entrances to public buildings; and distribute portable ashtrays to smokers. In 2018, Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful also collaborated with the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) to implement the CLPP program at Point State Park, Linn Run, Laurel Summit, Laurel Ridge, Oil Creek, and Yellow Creek state parks, all of which offer recreational lakes, whitewater rafting, canoeing, and kayaking as well as and thousands of miles of hiking trails. The final scan, performed after the installation of ash receptacles, education implementation, and the distribution of portable ashtrays, documented a reduction rate of 81 percent. Landis on “The Haldemans Down Yonder: Professor Haldeman and His Kin at Chickies and Columbia.” Landis is a native Lancastrian and has been researching genealogy and history within Lancaster County for more than 40 years. He is a longtime member, active researcher, and volunteer at both the Lancaster County Historical Society (now LancasterHistory) and the Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society, where he serves on the Genealogy Committee, which plans the annual Lancaster Family History Conference. Since 1992, Landis has taught classes on a number of genealogical topics for both organizations, with Pennsylvania’s Colonial tax records being a special area of expertise. In recent years, Landis’ historical research has focused on the history of the Borough of Marietta. He has authored a number of articles and books on the history of the borough, given numerous lectures on local history, and documented the histories of nearly 300 historic homes in the area. To make reservations for the limited-seating Victorian Tea at the Haldeman Mansion, interested individuals may call event chairperson Elaine Jackson at 717-426-3794 or 717-283-7740. The deadline to do so is Tuesday, July 16. There is a fee per person to attend the tea, with all proceeds benefiting the heating fund for the Haldeman Mansion. Jackson noted that once a heating system is installed in the historic building, the HMPS will be able to host events for the public year-round. The historic stone mansion, which was built in four stages and completed in 1811, was the birthplace of Samuel Haldeman,

Mount Joy Sign Receives Renovation The Mount Joy Chamber’s “Welcome to Mount Joy” sign at the east end of Mount Joy has has been renovated over the past year. It was power washed by Eastern Mobile Wash, and the brick was repointed by Jeff Summy. The electric and lighting was added by Nolt Electric and PPL. Most of the signs have been updated to give it a clean new look, and signs were installed by Carper Signs. Timbers Tree Service donated its time, mulch and the shrubs. Mount Joy Borough worked with the Chamber on the project.

At 7 p.m. on Tuesday, July 30, the community is invited to gather at Mulberry Art Studios to experience an evening of music and poetry. Organizers hope that the event, titled “Meditations on Loss,” may offer the opportunity for a little healing for those who are grieving. The program will be a meditation on the tragedy of life, loss, and time, transformed by music, nature, and poetry. Justin Hopkins will read two poems: Elizabeth Bishop’s “One Art,” a villanelle about the art of losing, and Donald Hall’s “Without,” a poem without punctuation on the loss of his wife. Christopher Brooks, violin, and Patrick White, bass, will interweave music among these poems, performing solo violin, solo electric bass, and violin and bass together, culminating with Bach’s “Sarabande” in D minor and Elliott Carter’s “Mnemosyne” for solo violin, which he wrote in memory of his late wife. The inspiration for this event grew from White, who tells stories of many people whom he loved who have recently died.

The Junior League of Lancaster’s inaugural Community Grant winners included Milagro House, Thaddeus Stevens Foundation and Susquehanna Heritage’s Females Inspiring Real Empowerment (FIRE). Milagro House’s mission is to provide educational programming, housing and life skills training for women and their children who would otherwise experience homelessness. It assists women in getting an education by removing the barriers to betterment and selfsufficiency that women in poverty
