MONTHLY MEETING

The Maytown Historical Society

BIBLE SCHOOL

Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1290 River Road, Marietta, will hold its “Water of Life” vacation Bible school (VBS) from 6:30 to 8 p.m. from Sunday, July 22, through Thursday, July 26. The VBS will explore the gift of water. The program will include games and crafts that may be messy, so attendees should dress appropriately. On July 22, a free picnic supper will be offered at 5:30 p.m. To register, readers may search for “Zion Marietta VBS” on Eventbrite or call the church at 717-426-1884. Preregistration is recommended. GUEST SPEAKER

The Mount Joy Area Historical Society will hold its monthly meeting on Monday, July 16, at 7 p.m. at the society’s building, 120 Fairview St., Mount Joy. Guest speaker Tony Haverstick will speak on the history and process of bookbinding. Haverstick is the owner of Water Street Bindery, where he restores books in a 19th-century bookbinder’s shop in downtown Lancaster. The historical society’s monthly meetings include a brief business meeting, followed by a program. Light refreshments will be served. Meetings are open to the public free of charge.

Ironville United Methodist Church (UMC), 4020 Holly Drive, Columbia, will hold its vacation Bible school (VBS) from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 15, through Thursday, July 19. Children age 4 through those in grade six are invited to take part in the VBS, which will have the theme “Snowtrek - Walking Into God’s Word.” Participants will go on a snow adventure and find God’s Word to lead them. They will learn values from Bible stories to apply to their lives. Activities will include stories, crafts, games, and snacks. Attendees may also meet Ironville UMC’s new minister, pastor Greg Impink, and his wife, Rachelle. For additional details, call 717-684-8072.

Giving Back To The Community LCFCA Seeks Volunteers With Recruitment Campaign By Chelsea Peifer

Jared Artus began volunteering as a junior firefighter simply because he had always loved helping people - and he loved fire trucks, too. He is now the deputy fire chief at Fivepointville Fire Company and has 24 years - and counting - of experience as a volunteer firefighter. “You have a great opportunity to make a huge difference in someone’s life, especially since 99 percent of the people are in their worst nightmare when you get there,” Artus said. While Fivepointville has a decent amount of volunteers, Artus said that like many other fire companies, its numbers have slowly dwindled. Lancaster County Fire Chiefs Association (LCFCA) Recruitment and Retention Committee spokesman Duane Hagelgans said that while some stations do very well, most are struggling to have and maintain enough members to provide adequate service.

The Lancaster County Fire Chiefs Association launched a recruitment campaign this year in an effort to meet See Volunteers pg 5 the growing need for volunteer members of the 67 fire departments and companies throughout the county.

“The Music Man” Will Return To SSC Grandview Vineyard Marks Fifth Anniversary By Chelsea Peifer

Meredith Willson’s “The Music Man” was the very first show produced by the Susquehanna Stage Company (SSC) in the summer of 2009. In honor of the theater company’s 10th season, it will be presenting the beloved musical once again. “It was a good show to start the company, and we’re repeating some of the famous things we did in the past,” noted director Jim Johnson. Eight cast members will repeat their roles from the first SSC production of “The Music Man,” including Mount Joy resident Sharon Boyer, who will portray Mrs. Paroo. “It was a lot easier to learn my lines. Remembering how I did it the last time is helping me now,” Sharon said. Playing Mrs. Paroo again is a welcome task for Sharon, who described her character as a fun and opinionated person. Lorita Valente, and deputy secretary for elementary and secondary education for the Pennsylvania Department of Education Matthew Stem. State Sen. Ryan Aument and Rep. Dave Hinkernell also attended. The activities included tours of the early learning center and an opportunity to meet the Luthercare for Kids team. The creation of Luthercare for Kids - Marietta reflects Luthercare’s aim of providing highquality child care in an environment specifically designed to support early learning programming for young children in the communities served by Luthercare for Kids. The Marietta location, within a state-of-the-art space inside Community Bible Church, opened its doors on June 4 and is providing services for children 6 weeks old through preschool. The center will also offer a before- and after-school program for the 2018-19 school year. The partnership enables Luthercare the opportunity to collaborate with two school districts - Columbia and Donegal - to combine resources toward the common goal of equipping children with a strong education foundation that will provide them with the skills they need to be successful in school and life. Luthercare for Kids - Marietta is one of four centers operated by Luthercare for Kids in Lancaster and Lebanon counties. Each Luthercare for Kids location is a state-licensed center and participates in Pennsylvania’s quality initiative, the Keystone STARS program. Luthercare for Kids offers Early Head Start and Pre-K Counts programming. Since 2005, Luthercare has operated Luthercare for Kids - Columbia within space at the Columbia School District Administration Building. That location reduced services on June 1. Services for infants, toddlers and preschoolers moved to the Community Bible Church location. The school-age summer program will operate at the Columbia location See Luthercare pg 9

Mrs. Paroo’s daughter, Marian, will be played by Stacia Smith of Harrisburg. Marian, a librarian, is among the town members who do not quite believe the story that is told by smooth-talking con man Harold Hill when he arrives in tightknit River City, Iowa, and attempts to convince them he is a talented bandleader. He sets out to recruit folks to form a band only to pocket the cash he receives for instruments and uniforms. Harold Hill - the Music Man himself - will be portrayed by Nick Smith of Harrisburg. Harold’s problems escalate as he finds himself becoming attached to the townspeople and falling in love with bombshell Marian, and he must decide whether to skip town or tell the truth. Stacia, who is married to Nick in real life, said that she feels lucky to have the chance to play across from her husband in the production. Tackling the role of Harold has been fun for Nick, who said that his character’s tendency to be a big dreamer is easy to relate to, but the con man aspect, not so much. “We have a large cast filled with a lot of good talent, and it’s a really good community show,” Nick shared. “It’s really special to be a part of.” Sharon echoed those thoughts, noting that the music throughout the duration of the production will have audiences captivated. “It’s just one of the best all-American shows. All of the music is good, and the leads are spectacular,” commented Sharon. “The Music Man” cast will also include Dale Boyer, Josh Kulp, Kevin Allen, Jim

“Some municipalities are seeing a need and must pay for firefighters; (however), there are many municipalities in Lancaster County that can survive and provide adequate protection with volunteers, if we have enough members of our communities willing to make the sacrifice to help their neighbors,” Hagelgans stated. Earlier this year, several Lancaster County volunteer firefighters and rescuers shared their experiences in on-camera interviews for videos as part of an ongoing countywide recruitment effort led by the LCFCA to draw in volunteers for the county’s 67 volunteer fire companies and search-and-rescue squads. The videos may be viewed by searching for “Lancaster County Volunteer Recruitment” at www.youtube.com. Hagelgans said that the LCFCA has seen an uptick in volunteer inquiries since the videos were released but is still well below the number of volunteers needed. The campaign has also included advertisements on the internet and television and at movie theaters, with radio ads coming soon. “If we can find people to give a little, we can all work together for the safety of our communities,” said Hagelgans, adding that individuals should not feel like they are signing up for a lifetime commitment either - just a few years will make a difference. Plus, Hagelgans emphasized that not all volunteers run into burning buildings. Willing individuals are needed to help with administrative functions, to serve as fire police to direct traffic, and to assist with exterior firefighting work. No special skillset is required,

as training will be provided. For Lisa Breneman, who volunteers with Fire Department Mount Joy, it was seeing her father volunteer that sparked an interest in her. “Initially, I had approached it to just become a driver only and help them get out during daytime calls,” explained Breneman. That soon grew into an interest to do more than drive, as Breneman said she wanted to learn how to run in and assist those who were injured, and help extinguish the fires. That interest eventually led into a career for Breneman, who now works full-time as a fire investigator while continuing to volunteer locally. “It’s rewarding to help people in the community, to see that sense of relief in their eyes when you arrive on the scene, and try to calm the situation at hand,” shared Breneman. Providing fire prevention training at schools and watching the children’s excitement is another part of volunteering that Breneman loves. “You feel a sense of purpose when helping to serve the community, and I’d love to see more young people volunteer,” Breneman said. Most fire companies offer junior membership opportunities for students age 16 and older. Artus and Breneman both praised the camaraderie at their respective fire stations. “The fire service is a camaraderie and a brother and sisterhood,” Hagelgans remarked. “We are a family, and we will be your family.” To learn more or sign up to volunteer, readers may visit www.becomeafirefighter.org.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony took place on June 28 to celebrate the completion of the Rotary Park Path Extension, a collaborative effort between the Borough of Mount Joy, Lancaster County Career and Technology Center (LCCTC), and the Mount Joy Rotary Club. The purpose of the path is for connectivity and completing connections throughout the borough to provide safer modes of transportation and access to all users. The path is a continuance of the Emerald Necklace concept to ultimately connect all the borough’s parks on a multimodal transportation plan. The Rotary Park Path Extension will help in connecting Rotary Park, Cove Park (Mount Joy Township), Borough Park, and Little Chiques Park.

Just In Time For Summer! Marketing and special events coordinator Kim Craven likes to say that at the National Watch and Clock Museum, 514 Poplar St., Columbia, patrons don’t have to just visit time, they can take time home with them. That is precisely what people of all ages will have the chance to do this summer at the museum’s Make-and-Take workshops, which allow participants to design and create a clock to take home. The Make-and-Take workshops are offered from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Mondays through Aug. 27 at the museum. A small fee is charged. Individuals may drop in and do not need to register, but large groups should make reservations in advance by calling 717684-8261, ext. 2. Although the workshops are popular with children and families,

museum admissions and gift shop manager Abby Krouse said that the activity has also been a hit with adults who come in to make the clocks together. “People get so creative,” remarked Krouse. “I love looking at all of the things they come up with.” Participants begin by selecting a wooden base for their clock from an assortment of shapes ranging from circles and squares to dinosaurs, football helmets, and more. Next up is painting - where the sky is the limit with color options and even the chance to add glitter - followed by drying. The next step is adding the batteryoperated movement piece and securing it with nuts and washers before setting it to the correct time, and voila! Depending on how involved a person may decide to make the design of the clock, the project can take anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour. Preschool-age children can complete the task with some assistance from a

grown-up, but the open-ended nature of the task truly makes it fun for individuals of all ages. Craven noted that the clocks make great personalized gifts for birthdays and holidays, too. “A workshop like this one is another opportunity to encourage families to visit and see that our museum is not only educational, but a whole lot of fun, too - for all ages,” shared Craven. The National Watch and Clock Museum is operated by the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors Inc., a nonprofit association with close to 13,000 members, representing 52 countries. From Memorial Day through Labor Day, the museum is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Mondays through Saturdays and from noon to 4 p.m. on Sundays. Discounted admission rates are available to senior citizens, students, AAA members, and groups of 10 or more. To learn more, readers may call 717-684-8261 or visit www.museumoftime.org.
