For many local residents, like the Horst family of Elizabethtown, hosting a child through the Fresh Air Fund’s Friendly Towns program is a highly anticipated part of every summer. The Horsts have welcomed Lulu, an 11-year-old from New York City, into their home for a week or more each summer since 2014 and were eager to see her as she arrived at the Junction Center in Manheim on July 2 along with 34 other children and teenagers being hosted by Lancaster- and Lebanon-area families. “It’s great to have Lulu return again and again and develop a close relationship with her,” said Juanita Horst. See Fresh Air Fund pg 2

Thirty-five children and teenagers from New York City arrived by bus at the Junction Center in Manheim on July 2 as part of the Fresh Air Fund’s Friendly Towns Program and were greeted by excited host families from throughout the Lancaster and Lebanon area. Drop-offs occur at various locations several times each summer for one- or two-week stays. Host families are needed for next summer and may apply at www.freshair.org.

Lancaster County community members were sworn in by the Hon. Jeffrey Reich as Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) volunteers on May 31 in the ballroom at Emerald Foundation Community Campus in Lancaster. The new volunteers join more than 200 others who have been trained and are advocating for foster children in the county’s dependency court system. CASA volunteers help to ensure that the children’s needs are recognized and best interests are considered both in the courtroom and in the community. CASA of Lancaster County trains volunteers to be qualified, compassionate advocates to fight for and protect a child’s right to be safe, to be treated with dignity and respect, and to learn and grow in the security of a loving family. CASA volunteers meet regularly with the child and interview people in the child’s life, including social workers, attorneys, teachers, doctors, and mental health professionals. The new volunteers include Rick Groff, Lancaster; Karyn Heichel, Lancaster; Jocelyn Mylin, Willow Street; Mary Beth Schweigert, Lancaster; Yvonne Tejada, Lancaster; Holly Mutchler, Lititz; Judy Swarthout, Elizabethtown; Melissa Davey, Landisville; Michelle Clements, Landisville;

The Fresh Air Fund is a not-for-profit agency that connects thousands of children from low-income families in New York City with host families in rural, suburban, and small-town communities along the East Coast and southern Canada. Youths ages 7 to 18 stay free of charge for one or two weeks of fun and relaxation with a host family. Bus drop-offs occur several times throughout the summer in various locations. Juanita’s daughter, Larisa, said that having another girl in the house is one of her favorite parts of Lulu’s summer stays. In past years, the Horsts took Lulu along to visit a local amusement park in Hershey and Camp Hebron in Halifax to try new activities such as horseback riding and archery. At home, the family loves to spend as much time as possible outside, including evenings spent roasting marshmallows over the fire pit and setting up tents to camp out overnight. Exploring the family garden is another simple pleasure for Lulu, and last summer the Horsts sent corn back with her to New York so that she could share fresh corn on the cob with her own family. “It’s fun to see the kids’ excitement as they pick fresh tomatoes, peppers, and corn,” Juanita remarked. When it comes to being inside, art projects are a popular way to pass the time, whether working on airplane and car models or creating plush toys and hair accessories. Simply spending time together is what the Ross family of Palmyra most enjoys about hosting a Fresh Air Fund child. This summer, the family of six children - ranging from age 8 to 14 - reunited with 14-year-old Shirley, who has been visiting through the Fresh Air Fund since she was 7. “She kind of fits right in, and it mixes things up a little bit,” said Doug Ross, noting that his children welcome the experience. “It’s a good experience for your children to be introduced to people of other cultures and regions.” The first year that Shirley visited, Doug said that they traveled a lot, making trips to Delaware beaches and to see wild animals at Lake Tobias in Halifax and so forth. “We kind of killed ourselves entertaining her, but at the end of the time her favorite thing was just going to the community pool,” Doug recalled. Now they aim to make things special right at home, with things like cookouts and campfires. The Rosses have chickens,

said, ‘Actually, this won’t even last us past July,’” recalled Hayden. “That’s when it hit me how big the need was.” “This is a problem that flies under the radar. Hunger has a certain stigma to it,” said Hayden, noting that although it is a widespread issue, people oftentimes do not want to admit to struggling with it. Hardworking people often still face the choice of deciding between heat for their homes or food for their families, and Hayden believes that is something everyone can pitch in to help change. Hayden, Bobby D. Jones, and Todd Fuginetti formed FoodStock, a nonprofit organization, in 2011 as a way to combine their shared passion for music and helping others. Every summer, the organization hosts the FoodStock Music Festival as a way to raise funds for area organizations working to end hunger. This year’s event will take place from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, July 28, in the Barn and Barrel Courtyard at the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire, 2775 Lebanon Road, Manheim. The music festival will include performances by Steel Radiance, Corsair Blue Jazz Orchestra, Benjamin Vo Blues Band, solo guitarist Rob Reese, and Hydroponic Philharmonic. Headlining the event at 5 p.m. will be Vinyl Groov, a Harrisburgbased band that plays everything from Motown to modern hits. “They’re an event in and of themselves,” Hayden said. “We try to keep it fresh, so we have a really eclectic mix of performers this year.” Food and beverages will be available to purchase, and a variety of arts and craft vendors from throughout central Pennsylvania will have items for attendees to browse and buy. Giveaways and silent and Chinese auctions are planned as well, with items including autographed CDs, Beatles memorabilia, a black five-piece Pearl Roadshow complete drum set, original artwork, a wedding photography package, tickets to area attractions and restaurants, and more. To purchase tickets to the FoodStock Music Festival, interested individuals may visit www.foodstockpa.org. Admission for children age 12 and under is free. Proceeds from the 2018 event will primarily benefit Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services (CVCCS), as well as Water Street Mission and other local food banks and pantries. “We have a main beneficiary every year, but then we break it down and choose other organizations, too,” Hayden explained. FoodStock always donates to the food bank in the town where the event is hosted, so the Manheim Central Food Pantry will benefit again this year. “We just want people to come out and enjoy the spirit of the event,” said Hayden. “There’s a lot of people out there in need. One circumstance - one illness, the loss of a spouse - can change it all. I think a lot of people take that for granted,” he reflected. For more details, readers may visit www.foodstockpa.org or www.face book.com/foodstockmusicfestivalpa.

Calvary Bible Church of Mount Joy, 629 Union School Road, Mount Joy, held a groundbreaking celebration for its “Building on Faith” expansion project on June 10. The Rev. Dr. Randal E. Pelton, senior pastor, highlighted the church’s longstanding focus on “Teaching People to Do the Things That Jesus Said to Do.” The two-story expansion, along with a lower level, will add 15,000 square feet for ministry. It will feature additional classrooms, expanded nurseries and a youth area, administrative offices, a fellowship area, and restrooms. There will also be an update of the current facilities. The church completed a renovation of the sanctuary in 2016. The project has a completion date of June 2019. Calvary Bible Church has ministered in

Swim Team from pg 1 The Mount Joy Lions Club has closed its swimming pool on Fairview Street after 54 years of continuous operation. For most of those years, the pool sponsored a summer swim team. With the closing of the pool, the swim team faced an uncertain future. Through the efforts of the Mount Joy Lions swim team parents group and support from various community organizations, the swim team will continue practicing at Elizabethtown College and will swim all its meets at the scheduled opponent’s pool. A recent donation of $2,500 from the Mount Joy Lions Club to the swim team was intended to help defray the cost of operating as a team without a permanent home pool.

and cold beverages available for purchase on July 29 and Aug. 5 beginning at 5 p.m. Monies raised at Music in Memorial Park will help to fix Mount Joy’s Rotary Clock, which has been removed from its downtown location for refurbishing and will return in good working order by the end of the summer. The Chamber’s free ice cream social will take place on Aug. 19, while supplies last. In the event of inclement weather on the evening of a concert, the concert will be moved indoors to New Path Community Church, 22 W. Main St., Mount Joy. At the first three concerts, tickets will be available to purchase for the Chamber’s 23rd annual chicken barbecue, which is set to take place on Saturday, Aug. 18, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Milanof-Schock Library, 1184 Anderson Ferry Road, Mount Joy. There is a

set cost for dinners, which will include a halfchicken, a baked potato, a roll and butter, applesauce, a whoopie pie, and a beverage. Folks may also opt to purchase a half-chicken and beverage. The Mount Joy Chamber of Commerce is made up of approximately 200 businesses of all sizes, as well as churches, organizations, nonprofit groups, and individuals. Members pay minimal yearly dues depending on the number of employees. Information on members is published in the Chamber’s yearly business directory and on the Chamber website. Members can also take advantage of advertising in the Chamber newsletter, email blasts, and other advertising. The Chamber holds monthly luncheons on the second Wednesday of each month, monthly mixers at member businesses, and ribbon cuttings

and grand openings for its members. Every year, the Chamber awards seven scholarships totaling $4,500 to local students, and it also holds community events including Music in Memorial Park and visits with Santa. The Chamber is currently in the process of refurbishing the large welcome sign at the east end of town. The Mount Joy Chamber is self-funded

with member dues and upgraded memberships and two yearly fundraisers: the annual banquet and benefit auction held each spring and the chicken barbecue held on the third Saturday in August every year. The Mount Joy Chamber of Commerce was established in 1939. For more information, readers may visit www.mountjoy chamber.com or call 717-653-0773.
