Susquehanna Stage will present “Children of Eden”

“Childrenof Eden” is a musical about relationships, specifically the relationships between parents and children, told through two Bible stories.

“It’s a reinterpretation of the creation narrative as well as the flood narrative … exploring the way that God’s parentship of humans interacts and how His influence is passed down through generations,” explained Ethan Goss, who portrays Adam and Noah in the show, noting that act one focuses on the Garden of Eden and act two is about the ark.

“Children of Eden” will be performed at Susquehanna Stage, 133 W. Market St., Marietta, from

community organizations, local sports teams, businesses and more.

July 21 through Aug. 6 at 7:30 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and at 2 p.m. on Sundays.

The show features the music of Stephen Schwartz, who also wrote the songs for “Wicked,” “Godspell” and “Pippin,” among other musicals, said Mike Kohler, who plays Father in “Children of Eden.”

“This show is basically about choices and how choices can benefit you or get you in trouble and the consequences of choices,” Kohler said, referencing Eve taking a bite from the apple in the Garden of Eden as an example. “And Father, who is the God-like character, his character and his personality wears away as he sees the things that he’s created go against him or make bad choices, and it wears him down.”

Audiences of all ages will find something to love about the show, said Nichole Witman, who portrays Eve and Mama Noah. “There’s going to be a lot of things happening on stage to keep little kids engaged, and then there’s awesome music,” she stated.

Kohler added that the production includes a variety of special effects and unique props, including elaborate costumes to represent the animals in the ark. “The animals going into the ark is a pretty special moment,” he said.

Witman emphasized that although the show might not be well-known to audiences, it will make an impact.

“It’s really a hidden gem,” she said. “The music is wonderful. … It’s almost an opera. There is dialogue,

Watercolor show urges people to follow their dreams

Tom Newnam is the perfect example of following your heart.

The professional artist was inspired to begin painting after meeting Jack R. Shaub, although neither man was painting full time when they met. Jack, a court-appointed juvenile probation officer for York County, was Tom’s boss, and the two became fast friends.

One day, Jack invited Tom to his

Marietta home to see the paintings he created in his spare time. It was a moment that would change Tom’s life.

“It’s hard to explain, or even believe, but I had a totally unexpected epiphany,” Tom said, recalling seeing Jack’s watercolors for the first time. “My soul informed me, strongly and clearly, that I was also called to be an artist, which completely blew my mind as I knew nothing about painting.”

Jack was known for creating

watercolors that reflected what he saw on his hikes around Mariettatrees, landscapes, streams, buildings and more. He soon became a mentor to Tom, who in turn became a full-time artist. The two stayed friends for 20 years, until Jack’s death from cancer at age 53 in 1996.

“Most people say they can see Jack’s style in my work,” Tom noted. “I’m a little more diverse, both in using more colors and in the subject matter. I paint animals, landscapes and flowers.”

The artwork from the two friends will be showcased at Garth gallery, 22 S. Second St., Columbia, in an exhibit called “Tom Newnam/Jack Shaub Watercolors.” It will open with a reception from 6 to 9 p.m. on Friday, July 21, and will be on display through the first week in September.

The exhibit came about after Jack’s son, Matt, told Tom he had several of Jack’s paintings and wasn’t sure what to do with them. Tom approached Garth owner Cle Berntheizel about doing a show at the gallery where Tom has often shown his own work. Both framed and unframed watercolors will be on display, and the artwork will also be for sale.

“To me, this whole exhibit is inspirational,” Tom commented. “People who come to see it can expect to be inspired by the truth that you can follow your dreams. What does your heart say you were meant to do? Because of Jack’s mentoring and guidance - and kindness and patience - I went on to have a successful art career.” Tom has also written two books about his journey to self-discovery, “Memo From Your Soul” and “Try Softer.”

He emphasizes that although the exhibit is an art show, it’s really about much more than art. “Don’t come to this art show just because you love art and maybe

want to try painting for yourself,” he stated. “Come to this art show because you want to be reminded to wholeheartedly follow your own dream to become a horse rescuer, or teacher, or mechanic, or farmer, or seamstress, or scientist, or nurse, or politician or seashell collectorwhatever brings you the most fulfillment! That’s the point of the show.”

Connecting with the Arts

Barnstormers frompg 1

Mount Joy Night is a joint effort between the Barnstormers, the Borough of Mount Joy and the Mount Joy Chamber of Commerce. Members of the Barnstormers staff approached the borough last year, asking about interest in a community night. Borough manager Mark Pugliese reached out to the Chamber to support the event.

“We loved the idea of doing something fun, something that could involve the whole community of Mount Joy,” said Ashley Zell, executive director of the Chamber, noting that the Barnstormers organization is a member of the Mount Joy Chamber of Commerce.

The evening will feature businesses and nonprofits in the Mount Joy area, which will set up information tables, some of which will feature interactive games and giveaways. Mount Joy first responders will be onsite outside the ballpark, located at 650 N. Prince St., with some vehicles on hand.

Children are invited to bring their own balls and gloves and take to the field for a game of catch before the baseball game, Zell said, and youths

from Mount Joy sports teams will join the Barnstormers on the field during the national anthem. Children will also have the opportunity to run the bases after the game.

Mount Joy Night will also be Christmas in July at the ballpark, and people are encouraged to come dressed in their favorite holiday gear. Post-game fireworks will be featured, presented by Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health and the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

Barnstormers representative Tate Weismandel said community nights provide an opportunity for the team to thank and support local people, businesses and organizations. He estimates that upward of 600 people attended last year’s Mount Joy Night. “We hope to have even more people come this year,” he stated. “We want to bring everyone together for a fun night that showcases the businesses and organizations in the community.”

Discount tickets will be offered to Mount Joy community members and may be purchased by contacting Weismandel at tweismandel@ lancasterbarnstormers.com or 717-358-9842.

Library to unveil new courtyard

A ceremony to officially unveil the new courtyard at the MilanofSchock Library will take place, rain or shine, on Friday, July 21, at 5 p.m. Emily Fasig, a local Girl Scout, built and donated the tables, and the community was invited to purchase legacy bricks to pave the courtyard. To date, more than 120 bricks have been purchased.

Fair to include essay, poetry, poster contests

Contributors to the project will also be recognized during the ceremony, including the Mulá Group, the local company that designed the courtyard; GCM Inc., the builders; and Drohan Brick & Supply Inc., which engraved the bricks.

The Milanof-Schock Library is located at 1184 Anderson Ferry Road, Mount Joy. For more information, visit www.mslibrary.org.

The annual Essay Contest and Poetry Contest will again be held as part of the Elizabethtown Fair, which will run from Monday, Aug. 21, to Saturday, Aug. 26, at the Elizabethtown Fairgrounds, High Street, Elizabethtown. Both an original essay and an original poem may be titled “Why I Like the Elizabethtown Fair” or any other title relating to the Elizabethtown Fair.

The essay may be handwritten or typed. It may not exceed one page typed or two pages written and must be neat and legible. Judging will be based on clarity of expression, content, creativity, grammar, and organization. The poem may not exceed two pages in length. It must be neat and legible but may be handwritten or typed. Judging will be based on clarity of expression, content, and creativity.

Both contests are open to students in grades one to 12 and adults. There will be age divisions for judging. Prize money and ribbons will be awarded for five placings in each age division.

A cover sheet listing the entrant’s name, address, phone number, and grade just completed or adult must accompany the essay and/or poem. Names should be on the cover sheet and not on the poem or essay. Entries are to be submitted in a page protector.

Essay and poetry exhibits may be picked up on Sunday, Aug. 27, from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Elizabethtown Brethren in Christ Church.
