CCWA Creek Stomp Moves To Mount Joy By Dayna M. Reidenouer
The Chiques Creek Watershed Alliance (CCWA) has held a creek stomp in Rife Run at Mummau Park in Manheim for at least five years. This year’s waterway exploration event, however, will be held at Little Chiques Park, 229 Park Ave., Mount Joy. The event will take place at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 12, as part of the Lancaster Conservancy Water Week. The event was moved in order to reach out to a different audience, said CCWA president Steve Gergely. The move will also expose previous creek stomp participants to a different tributary of Chiques Creek - the Little Chiques. According to www.chiquescreekwatershed.org, Chiques Creek flows 31 miles from its source in Lebanon County to the Susquehanna River near Marietta. Along the way, it collects water and organisms from Rife Run, Little Chiques Creek, and other creeks and streams. The health of a tributary impacts that of the
Chiques Creek and, by extension, the Susquehanna River and the Chesapeake Bay. It also affects the people and wildlife living around the tributary. “Everyone benefits from cleaner waterways,” Gergely commented, adding that groundwater is affected by stream health too. “It’s important that we provide education to the public and bring awareness to what individuals can do.” The creek stomp is one of the educational events the CCWA offers to the public. Gergely noted that the organization typically hosts a watershed expo during Water Week when it is held in June. This year, however, Water Week was postponed, and the expo was canceled because it draws crowds of up to 600 people. The CCWA opted to hold its annual creek stomp during the rescheduled Water Week. During the creek stomp, Lancaster County Conservation District representatives will give a presentation, then distribute nets and buckets and lead attendees into the Little Chiques.
The 2019 Chiques Creek Watershed Alliance creek stomp was held in Rife Run in Manheim. This year’s event will be held in Little Chiques Park in Mount Joy on Aug. 12.
UDS Service Dogs Program Sets First Golf Outing By Dayna M. Reidenouer
DON
UDS Service Dogs will host its first golf outing on Friday, Aug. 28, at Meadia Heights Golf Club, 402 Golf Road, Lancaster. Program manager Lori
Breece hopes it will become an annual event. “We have been trying to find a signature event that can bring in strong revenue for our program and get the community engaged,” Breece remarked. Landis Communities offered pointers in planning the event. Volunteers met with representatives of golf courses around Lancaster County to see who would want to partner with UDS Service Dogs, and Meadia Heights was the most eager. The Aug. 28 date was scheduled in August 2019. Breece said that when the shutdown occurred, she was afraid that the outing might have to be postponed or canceled, but final planning for the event is going strong. See UDS Service Dogs pg 5
Schreiber Rubber Duckie Race Goes Online Center Receives Matching Grant According to Dan Fink, director of marketing and public relations for the Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development, 625 Community Way, Lancaster, this is just the second time that Schreiber has received a $250,000 matching grant in its 84-year history, and both times it has come from the Donald B. and Dorothy L. Stabler Foundation. “This one comes at a critical moment for us as we work to navigate a COVID-19 world,” Fink remarked. “Like many nonprofits, we’re facing a challenging period in the next 12 months.” The grant will provide a dollar-for-dollar match for all the money raised by Schreiber starting June 11, when the Stabler
Foundation forwarded its approval. Stabler has committed up to $250,000, and Schreiber has one year to raise the matching funds. The initial $250,000 grant combined with what Schreiber hopes to raise from the community would mean See Schreiber pg 3
Schreiber’s 32nd annual Rubber Duckie Race will be virtual for the first time in its history. Souvenir duckies with a “Choose Your Own Adventure” theme will accompany ticket sales, which will end on Sept. 12. Ticket proceeds will be matched by a grant from the Stabler Foundation.

UDS Service Dogs (from left) Gibson, Henry, and Kirby were matched with clients in June and have begun team training in preparation for providing assistance to people with physical or intellectual disabilities. The organization will host its first golf outing on Aug. 28 at Meadia Heights Golf Club to raise funds to support the program.
There, participants may see what they can find in the water, scooping critters with nets and putting them in buckets for examination on shore. The experts will discuss the findings and what they mean to the health of the creek before returning the critters to the water. “It’s a great family event,” Gergely said. “It’s a good way for everybody to get a hands-on experience of what they find in our local waterways.” Additionally, a tour of the wildflower meadow in the park will be offered. People of all ages are welcome to participate in the creek stomp, and the CCWA has been working with Mount Joy Borough to identify safe access points to the creek. There is no cost to participate, but registration is required because attendance will be limited for safety. The event will be held rain or shine. Attendees should wear old shoes and clothing that may get wet, and they should bring masks and drinking water. Hand sanitizer will be provided. For more information about the CCWA and the creek stomp, as well as to register, readers may visit www.chiquescreekwatershed.org.

$500,000 for the local organization, matching the amount generated from a similar grant by the Stabler Foundation in 2016. That grant was the largest contribution toward adding an infant room to Schreiber’s Circle of Friends Academy child care center. “This grant couldn’t have come at a better time for Schreiber,” said Schreiber president James DeBord. “Obviously, with everything happening around COVID-19, raising revenue is even more of a concern than usual. The community rallied around us, as it always does, these past three months, but we don’t know what challenges are ahead of us. This grant and the matching dollars it generates will give us a significant boost at a critical time in our fundraising.” Schreiber has gradually phased in services in various departments. It has been open and providing limited therapy and behavioral health services, primarily through telehealth sessions, since early April. Circle of
Friends Academy reopened on June 8. Camp Schreiber began operating virtually on June 22. In addition, some Schreiber fundraising events that were limited, delayed, or postponed are finding new dates. The softball weekend will be held from Friday to Sunday, Aug. 21 to 23, and the Golf Classic will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 21. “We will keep making adjustments as we go,” DeBord said, “and we will keep telling our story. This place has been around for 84 years. I have faith that the staff, our leadership, and this community will do what’s necessary to make sure we’re still here on the other side of COVID.” Additionally, Schreiber has moved its iconic Rubber Duckie Race online. This year’s race would have been the 32nd event, but the tens of thousands of racing ducks will not take their trip down the Conestoga River at Lancaster County Central Park. Instead, a special online duckie event will be held on Sunday, Sept. 13, to determine prize

On Aug. 28, golfers may check in beginning at 8 a.m. Play will begin with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. and will take a scramble format. Refreshments will be provided. A barbecue buffet is set for 2 p.m. Opportunities to win gift baskets will be available. Additionally, UDS clients and their working service dogs, as well as puppies in training, are slated to attend. Breece hopes that the program’s newest dog - a Doberman pinscher - will have arrived by then and can be introduced at the outing. This will be the first Doberman to go through the UDS Service Dogs program, although Breece has had a pet Doberman for six years. The program’s primary breed is the Labrador retriever, but because
Dobermans are tall, they are better suited to providing stability when adults move from sitting to standing and vice versa. Breece had initially hoped to make $50,000 from the golf outing, but revenue expectations have been cut by half. “Any success will be a positive success because it’s new for us,” she said. The proceeds will be used to purchase more puppies for the program and cover veterinary costs, which can reach $2,000 per animal. With about 12 new puppies every year, UDS Service Dogs has vet bills for 25 dogs a year. Breece noted that in total, the program invests $25,000 in each dog. Clients are charged just $5,000. “We haven’t raised prices in 15 years,” Breece said.
members are taking classes to become certified to work with veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and train dogs to assist them, and child advocacy centers are on the waiting list for support canines. “I can’t wait to do it because I know it’ll help these children who have been through so much,” Breece commented. “I know how dogs are already helping in schools. The centers will partner each dog with a child, and the dog will be with them as they move through the court system.” Anyone who would like to support UDS Service Dogs by sponsoring the golf outing may contact Breece at 717-7158753 or lorib@udservices.org by Saturday, Aug. 1, and golfers may register to play in the outing at w w w. u d s e r v i c e s . o r g / g o l f through Friday, Aug. 14.
Basic Pistol Course Offered The Conewago Rod and Gun Club will conduct a basic pistol course on Sunday, Sept. 13, at its clubhouse, located at 1483 Turnpike Road, Elizabethtown. The course is designed for individuals who have limited or no experience with a handgun. The eight-hour course will teach beginning shooters the fundamental skills needed to own and
use a handgun safely and responsibly. It will include instruction in the classroom and on the pistol range. The course will be conducted by an NRAcertified pistol instructor. Minors are welcome to attend if accompanied by a parent or guardian. Separate fees for the course have been set for members and
for nonmembers. The fee will cover course materials and instruction. Due to the nature of the program, the class size will be limited to eight participants. To register for the course, readers may email Scott Deiter at training@conewagogunclub.org. For more information, readers may visit www.conewago gunclub.org.

Breece is excited about the evolution the program has undergone in recent years. She credited the change to the implementation of a better business plan and processes four years ago. “We had to commit to bringing in more puppies (to be trained),” Breece said. “Now we’re placing six to nine dogs a year. We have eight staff members and 30 puppies in different stages of training. That’s a lot of growth.” Only a portion of the dogs that go through the training process provide mobility assistance. The others go to work as facility dogs or become pets. Several UDS Service Dogs interact with children in schools and with clients in a counseling office near Philadelphia. Breece would like to increase the services the dogs provide. Currently, staff

Fire, rescue, and EMS companies hampered by lack of fundraising opportunities during the COVID-19 pandemic can register now for grants to help cover expenses. The Office of the State Fire Commissioner will offer funding via the COVID-19 Crisis Fire Company and Emergency Medical Services Grant Program. Fire/rescue/EMS companies that received a grant award from the 2019-20 Fire Company and Emergency Medical Services Grant Program (FCEMSGP) and register for the COVID-19 crisis grant program will receive an initial award equal to the amount they received from the 2019-20 FCEMSGP. The surplus funding in the program will be distributed to each eligible company that meets the funding criteria and submits a completed registration, including those that did not receive a 2019-20 FCEMSGP grant award. More information and registration instructions can be found by visiting www.osfc.pa.gov. Registration will be open until Friday, Aug. 7.
