The transformations in recent years at Our Home of Hope, a personal care home for 30 residents in Columbia, are as numerous as the hands that have helped to make them possible. After the main living area was painted and new pictures were hung on the walls, one resident told board president Mable Hershey that now it feels like walking into a hotel. “It’s like having a new home. They’re just in awe,” Mable shared. Mable and her husband, John, stepped in to help establish the home as a nonprofit organization in 2017 when it was on the brink of being shut down. Administrator Roxanne Simonson, who has been operating the home at 223-225 Cherry St. since 2001, reached out to the Hersheys in 2014 about the home’s dire situation. The building,

Business Collaborates With Brittany’s Hope To Build Houses By Chelsea Peifer

As Elizabethtown resident Naomi Fredlund anticipated the five-year anniversary of her company, Life Changes Realty Group, she envisioned a celebration that could somehow involve all of the business’s clients. One agent suggested doing a larger-scale version of the payit-forward program that Life Changes operates, and Fredlund loved the idea. Through pay-it-forward, Life Changes real estate agents donate a portion of their commission earned when a deal is closed to the charity of the client’s choice. According to Fredlund, that has led to more than $350,000 being donated to various charities thus far. A fundraising endeavor independent of pay-it-forward, See Brittany’s Hope pg 9

Elizabethtown resident Naomi Fredlund (right) got to meet Miss Lieu (left) during a May trip to Vietnam with Brittany’s Hope. Fredlund and her company helped to raise nearly $15,000 to build homes for families in need in Vietnam through Brittany’s Hope, including one for Miss Lieu and her children.

Members and supporters of the Mount Joy Chamber of Commerce invite the community to purchase tickets for the Chamber’s annual chicken barbecue on Aug. 17 at the Milanof-Schock Library. On Saturday, Aug. 17, the Mount Joy Chamber of Commerce will host its 24th annual chicken barbecue at

formerly known as the Cherry Street Guest Home, was in disrepair, and the income generated from government funding and disability benefits for the residents was not enough to cover daily and long-term operating costs, let alone any capital improvements needed. The Hersheys had met Roxanne when a homeless man that they were adoptive caregivers for moved into the home. They felt compelled to help and have tirelessly worked to turn things around for the home’s residents and staff - all the while being amazed at the way God provides. The Hersheys noted that God continues to show everyone involved in operating Our Home of Hope that this is His project, as countless individuals act as His hands and feet. This year, a much-needed kitchen renovation was completed - taking that space from cramped and outdated to state-of-the-art. See Our Home Of Hope pg 7

FAMILY FUN AND EXCITEMENT

4-H Club from pg 1

SATURDAY, AUGUST 3RD

The Mount Joy 4-H Community Club recently made a float for a local parade. At the first 4-H meeting of the year, club leader Katina Musser let club members know that a chairperson for the club float committee was needed. A recent transfer to the club, Meghan Becker, decided to take on that role. Meghan is a 16-year-old who, until a few years ago, lived in Dublin, Ireland. This was her first time participating in a community club, but she has an interest in art, along with experience organizing events through her church, where her dad is a pastor. After sketching a design for the float, Meghan sent a picture to Musser, and thus started the journey of creating the float. As the only member of the committee, Meghan took on most parts of the leadership process. Her grandfather helped to build parts of the project based on her ideas. Many other members of the club helped as well, including Xavier, who helped with much of the pre-planning, and Jenavieve, who showed up to every work day. The main concept behind the float was

ASSE International Student Exchange Programs (ASSE), in cooperation with community high schools around the USA, is looking for local families to host boys and girls, ages 15 to 18, from a variety of countries, including Norway, Denmark, Spain, Italy, Japan, and others. ASSE students come to practice their English and experience American culture, such as food, sports, shopping, etc. The students also love to share their own culture and language with their host families. Host families welcome these students into their family, not as a guest, but as a family member, giving both the students and families a rich cultural experience. In addition, ASSE students have pocket money for personal expenses and full health, accident, and liability insurance. ASSE students are academically selected into the program, and host families can choose their student from a wide variety of backgrounds, countries, and personal interests. To become a host family or to find out how to become involved with ASSE in the local community, readers may call the ASSE Eastern Regional Office at 800677-2773 or visit www.host.asse.com to choose a student and begin a host family application.

Our Home Of Hope from pg 1 When the Hersheys asked one of the contributors, “How can we ever thank you for providing money?” his response was: “When God has blessed you, you should bless others.” A new dining area provides an open, inviting space where residents can eat and socialize, and it also has a separate medication dispensing area. New tables replaced the old flimsy tables that would shake so badly that something as simple as someone cutting their meat could cause everyone’s beverages to spill.

The Hersheys noted that many of the residents do not have a family member who could care for them, and some of the residents never have visitors. The residents are family to each other. Mable shared that the recent improvements to the home have helped to make the residence truly “Our Home of Hope” for the residents, some of whom have lived there

Capital improvements valued at more than $190,000 were made possible through generous contributions. Key project sponsors included Engel Architects, Andrew Z. Burkholder Construction, The Clark Associates Charitable Foundation, and Premier Custom-Built Cabinetry. In addition, donations provided for exterior painting, replacement windows, and a new side porch and ramp. A new chair lift and the painting of the interior led to residents remarking, “We are treated like special people.”

Brittany’s Hope from pg 1 however, would be new for the company. When it came to selecting a recipient, Fredlund immediately thought of Brittany’s Hope, an Elizabethtown-based nonprofit that aims to help orphaned and at-risk children through international special needs adoption grants and humanitarian initiatives. “Being an adoptive mom myself, their

mission obviously resonates with me,” said Fredlund. “And another thing I love about Brittany’s Hope is that every penny goes to the children and not to administrative costs.” Fredlund serves on the board of Brittany’s Hope and approached executive director MaiLynn Sahd about potential projects that Life Changes could help with. Sahd suggested building a house for a family in need. “It was the perfect opportunity for us as a real estate company - a perfect fit,” Fredlund said. mate $5,000 needed to build one house through Brittany’s Hope in Vietnam. Through advertising the initiative on social media, sharing with clients, and participating as a team in the Brittany’s Hope 2018 Walk of Love fundraiser, Life Changes raised nearly $15,000. That meant Life Changes was able to contribute toward building homes for two families. In May, Fredlund and her husband and two adult children accompanied a group of Elizabethtown College students and professors, as well as other community members, on a trip to Vietnam to help with the building project. Sahd noted that the organization is judicious in the building process, allowing international volunteers to contribute to some parts of the project while still ensuring that the work is done by local residents so as not to take away economic opportunities. Anyone whom the organization builds a home for contributes something - whether labor, finances, or something else - toward completing the project. One of the homes built was for Miss Lieu, a young widow with two children living in a mud house with a collapsed roof. She had originally approached Brittany’s Hope about needing to place her children in one of the organization’s homes for children, as she was lacking means to repair the home, pay medical bills from her husband’s illness, and cover living expenses. Instead, Brittany’s Hope was able to build Miss Lieu a new home, complete with a sturdy roof to endure the rainy season as well as a bathroom, which the old house did not have. In spite of the language barrier, Fredlund connected with Miss Lieu and her children. “The hope (Miss Lieu) had was amazing to see. When I was there, she was glowing,” Fredlund shared. “One of the translators, (Le Thi Tu) Hong, said, ‘Their lives are forever changed,’ and that really stuck with me.” Fredlund also got to meet the two children that she sponsors through the Brittany’s Hope child sponsorship program. “It was one of the highlights of my life to see those families,” described Fredlund.

Marietta Legion Post 466

In the future, Fredlund would like to return to Vietnam with her colleagues and others interested in helping. “Brittany’s Hope went above and beyond. I’ve been on a lot of trips and very few of them were run as well as Brittany’s Hope,” remarked Fredlund. “My goal is to help other businesses that want to give back.” For more information on Brittany’s Hope, readers may visit www.brittanyshope.org. Registration is open for the 2019 Walk of Love Cross Country 5K and Fun Walk, which is set to take place on Saturday, Sept. 14.

Pieces are presented traditionally as fabric and also as hard pieces with the fabric stretched over wood and finished with a hard resin coating. Martelli decided to try his hand at tiedye while recovering from a series of health crises. As his skills improved, he began to find new ways to approach his art and build his understanding of the craft to create new ways of making and presenting tie-dye. He found healing in his artistic expression. Martelli continues to find new ways to present tie-dyed art pieces, and he has found especially great joy in providing large pieces for backdrops at concert venues. His stage backdrops have been enjoyed at concert venues locally as well as across the country. Additionally, in celebration of the 50th anniversary of Woodstock, Mulberry Art Studios will present an evening of the music of Woodstock on First Friday. DJ Chuck will spin the music of Janis Joplin,
