25 Years (And More) Of Chicken Barbecue By Dayna M. Reidenouer

The Mount Joy Chamber of Commerce will hold its 25th annual chicken barbecue event on Saturday, Aug. 15, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the rear of the Milanof-Schock Library, 1184 Anderson Ferry Road, Mount Joy. “It’s actually been longer than 25 years, but it’s been that long since they started keeping track,” Chamber coordinator Kerry Meyers said. “One of the first years, it poured down rain. The volunteers absolutely got drenched. That’s when we introduced the tent.” No matter the weather, the chicken barbecue sale has continued. Last year’s event offered 1,250 meals. This year,

1,000 meals will be prepared, and each will include a half-chicken, a baked potato, applesauce, a whoopie pie, a roll, and a beverage. Half-chickens accompanied by a beverage will also be available. “ We try to make sure monetary sponsorships cover the costs,” Meyers explained. “If you don’t sell out for any reason, you don’t want to eat a lot of that cost.” As the Chamber coordinator, Meyers has a unique insight into the health of Mount Joy-area businesses. Knowing that the shutdown has reduced incomes for most companies, she set a goal of $3,700 in sponsorships, half of what was generated last year. Previously, the See Chicken Barbecue pg 2

members of Chamber members, and adults continuing their education are eligible to apply for the scholarships. The Chamber is a hub for local businesses and organizations and has more than 200 members. Living or working in Mount Joy is not required for membership. Until March this year, the Chamber held monthly luncheons and mixers and an annual banquet. While those events have been suspended, the Chamber is continuing to create welcome bags for newcomers to Mount Joy, with each bag containing a directory of members and other goodies. The Chamber office is the official visitor’s center for the borough, and Chamber members may display their business cards and brochures there. Additionally, the Chamber sells Mount Joy Money gift certificates that can be used only at participating businesses. “It doesn’t cost them anything to participate, and it keeps all the dollars here in Mount Joy,” Meyers said, adding that $40,000 of certificates have been sold in the program’s 12 years. Since March, Meyers has checked in regularly with the other chambers of commerce in Lancaster County and the Economic Development Company. When Recovery Lancaster grants became available, Meyers and the other Chamber directors were the first to know, and they spread the word to their members. Meyers also tried to make phone calls to every Chamber member after the shutdown was announced. “My main goal was to help them,” she said. For more information about the Chamber, readers may visit www.mountjoychamber.com or call the aforementioned number.

lowest sponsor level was $100, but she added a $50 amount this year. “Only two jumped on that,” Meyers said. In fact, the response was nearly on par with last year. “I was just floored,” she commented. The financial backing of the event has allowed Meyers’ planning to focus on ensuring that volunteers and customers are safe during the event. The event has traditionally been offered as a hybrid drive-through and walkup, and that will be true again this year. “Setup will be a bit different so that volunteers can effectively social distance, and they will wear masks,” Meyers said. She noted that an emphasis will be placed on limiting contact between volunteers and customers, and the pickup process can be entirely contactless if customers purchase tickets in advance. Tickets are available at Milanof-Schock Library; JB Hostetter & Sons, 1225 W. Main St., Mount Joy; and the Chamber office, 62 E. Main St., Suite 1, Mount Joy. The Chamber office is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesdays through Fridays, but visitors should call the office at 717-653-0773 to ensure Meyers has not stepped out on an errand. Additionally, some Chamber members have tickets for sale and have posted signs at their locations. All presold tickets must be redeemed by 1 p.m. on Aug. 15. The proceeds from the barbecue will be used to support the Chamber and its activities, such as Music in the Park and visits with Santa Claus. The organization annually awards $4,500 in scholarships, with Donegal High School and The Janus School seniors among the recipients. Mount Joy residents, family

Service Project from pg 1 we are matched it’s about a year until we (can) travel and bring the child home.” In preparation for the upcoming service project, the Millers recruited about 30 to 40 friends and family members to help out with the work. “Our church, Victory Church in Lancaster, is also involved, and people are bringing friends that are really handy to come help us out,” said Tiffany. “Local businesses donated all of the supplies that we are going to use.” Donating businesses include Home Depot in Lancaster, Longenecker’s Hardware in Manheim, Dave’s Roll Off Service in Ephrata, Advanced Trim Specialties in Kinzers and Buck’s Lawn Care Service in Lititz. “We’re planning to work from at least 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., depending on how long it takes to get stuff done,” Tiffany pointed out. “We’ve been there three times to get measurements and figure out what supplies we need.” The couple also sent out sponsorship letters asking for donations to help out with adoption costs. “Both Hands gives you all the resources that you need to get the project going, but the way to raise money is to gather a team of people to help us and we, along with the group, sent out sponsorship letters,” Tiffany said. “All the money that comes in from sponsorship letters goes directly toward a tax-deductible fund that Both Hands sets up for us to pay for adoption expenses.” The Millers also hope to raise awareness about the Both Hands organization. “We just loved the concept of it and wanted to be able to share it with other people and be able to fundraise this way, too,” Tiffany said. Local couple Linda and Philip Malin has been photographing local furry and feathered family members for 30 years. However, the coronavirus pandemic challenged their business, which involved pet photography home visits and pet portrait events at local pet stores. They had to find a way to survive this crisis, so Linda came up with the idea to put pet photos on masks. Pet owners are invited to send the Malins an image by email or mail and then place an order for a Furry Face Mask at www.LindaAndPhilipMalin.com. Contact information for submitting photos is available on the aforementioned website. The Malins will tweak the photo, print it on a mask and mail it directly to the customer. Pet owners can have a photo of their bird, cat, dog or reptile heat-sealed and imprinted on a comfortable, two-ply, 100% polyester mask that can be washed and air dried. Individuals may also ask for a breed-specific pet from the Malins’ stock photography. While the Malins are used to working with pet expressions, the Furry Face Mask is not

adoptive families are asked to coordinate a service project at a widow’s home. In turn, the family receives sponsorships that are used to finance the cost of the adoption. The Both Hands name symbolizes one hand for the widow and the other hand for the orphans. On Saturday, Aug. 8, the Miller family and a team of volunteers will work at the home of a widow who resides in Ephrata. Her husband died unexpectedly this spring after being in a car accident and then contracting the COVID-19 infection. Her home is in need of some repairs, including landscaping, painting, minor electrical work and general tasks that are difficult for her to complete. After their application was approved by Both Hands, the Millers were asked to find a local widow in need. “We connected with (the widow in Ephrata) through a friend of a friend,” Tiffany noted. “Thankfully, she was the first widow we met and it all worked out. She is so grateful.” Both Hands, a Tennesseebased charity, was founded by JT Olson, who was taking part in a golf fundraiser. He sent out letters asking for sponsorships. “A friend wrote back on the letter and said, ‘Maybe if you were working on a widow’s house, I would sponsor you, but you are just playing golf,’” Tiffany said. “He decided he had a big heart for adopting and he and his family adopted as well, and he (formed) this organization.” Tiffany and Tim currently have three sons - Cameron, 8; Lincoln, 6; and Theo, 3, who was adopted from South Korea in 2018. They are currently waiting to be matched with a boy or girl from South Korea. “We’re hoping we will get a match soon,” said TIffany. “Once

Susquehanna National Heritage Area in partnership with the Borough of Columbia’s Parks and Recreation Committee has launched a 2020 Columbia Summer Bucket List. The list provides residents and visitors with suggestions of more than 35 activities featuring Columbia organizations, businesses and landmarks. The Columbia Summer Bucket List focuses on free and low-cost activities that are readily available and safe during the pandemic. Participants may discover new parts of town, view murals, and engage in silly activities. For example, the list encourages people to make a train noise at the Columbia & Reading Railroad Car at Manor and Fourth streets. Participants may also dive into Columbia’s history by visiting historic sites and markers like the Lincoln Highway marker on Chestnut Street and Zion Hill Cemetery. The initiative is also designed to support the Columbia business community. From a comic book store to gift shops, a variety of businesses are featured. Participants are also encouraged to try dishes at restaurants around town. Readers may download the list at www.susquehannaheritage.org/columbia-summerbucket-list-launched/ or www.columbiapa.net, or they may pick up a paper copy at Columbia Crossing River Trails Center, 41 Walnut St., Columbia. Columbia Crossing is open on Wednesdays to Sundays

Book Sale from pg 1 merchandise for a set fee all day on Aug. 15. The sale, normally held in June, was postponed to August due the coronavirus pandemic. “We will be requiring masks, and the number of people (who are shopping) will be limited to 25 according to state guidelines,” explained Lora Jones, who is cochair of the event along with Friends member Donna Little. She noted that during the book sale, shoppers will be asked to be mindful of social distancing requirements. Jones noted that the school gym is smaller than that at Donegal High School, but shoppers will still find a great selection of books, as well as DVDs and CDs. Book genres will include fiction, nonfiction, reference, cookbooks, gardening, home décor, health, history, children’s, Young Adult, Christian fiction, science, biography and more. “All our books are placed according to category, and each category is labeled at every table,” Jones explained, noting that the books are stored prior to the sale in the library’s sorting shed. “Every Tuesday, volunteers sort the books and place them into boxes (according to) category. The boxes are moved to the next room and stored in columns until the sale.”

Books sold at the sale are mainly those donated by library patrons, along with select titles gleaned from the library shelves. Jones pointed out that the most popular sale item is adult fiction. “The largest section we have is fiction - paperback and hardback,” she noted. “The children’s books go pretty well, too. We are so happy when kids come and look.” In addition to reading material, the sale will feature a food stand offering hot dogs, barbecue sandwiches, desserts and beverages. “We will have takeout food, and there will be no cafeteria seating,” Jones said. “Food can be purchased on the way out.” Cash, checks and credit cards will all be accepted as forms of payment at the sale. All proceeds from the event will go to the Milanof-Schock Library. The Friends of the MilanofSchock Library meet at 6:30 p.m. on the second Monday of each month at the library, located at 1184 Anderson Ferry Road, Mount Joy, with the exception of July and December. During the stay-at-home order, the group met via Zoom, but meetings have recently transitioned back into in-person gatherings. The group’s next meeting will be held right before the sale on Monday, Aug. 10. The group also operates the Friends Bookstore, located inside the library. The shop offers used books for people of all ages, as well as CDs, DVDs and crafts. Organizers hope that many book lovers and library patrons will turn out for the upcoming sale. “Even though we have many active Kindle and computer people, people still like to hold a book,” Jones added. For more information about the library and the Friends group, readers may call 717-6531510 or visit www.mslibrary.org.

Financial technology company SmartAsset recently released the results of a study it conducted to identify the Pennsylvania counties where residents are donating the most. To find the most generous places, the study measured how much money people in each county donated as a percentage of their income, as well as the proportion of people in a given county making charitable donations. Chester, Lancaster, and York counties were among those included in the resulting list of the most generous counties in Pennsylvania. Chester County took the top spot, with Lancaster County taking fifth and York County placing 10th. To determine the amount of money that people donate as a percentage of their income, SmartAsset first calculated the total net income of all people in each county. To do this, the company used tax return data and accounted for federal, state, and local taxes paid. Researchers also accounted for deductible entries, including mortgage interest, mortgage points, and mortgage insurance payments. They then divided each county’s total charitable donations by its total net income to see how much county residents are donating relative to their

“We’re trying to get some new Scouts in our group because the boys are getting older, Nina said. Nina and her husband, Pat, who serves as the troop’s Scoutmaster, are committed to Scouting because of the positive impact it makes on Scouts and those around them. “It allows youths to be outdoors learning survival skills, appreciating and conserving their natural surroundings, and gives them new experiences, leadership skills, and involvement in their community, Nina explained. “We’re just trying to help make great community leaders - people who care about the Earth and their communities. Troop 64 has been developing leaders for almost a half-century. It was chartered in 1971 and will mark its 50th anniversary next year. Through the decades, Troop 64 has developed a robust calendar of activities, which include weekly meetings, monthly campouts, and holiday events. The troop hosts a spaghetti dinner fundraiser in March and Breakfast With Santa in December and participates in several food drives. In May, troop members assist with the Sertoma chicken barbecue event at Long’s Park. “They actually help set the whole thing up, then sleep overnight in the park, Nina said. “They’re up at 3 a.m. for the

lighting of the (barbecue) pits, and they help put chicken in bags and put the meals in the boxes. Nina noted that this is the first year that Troop 64 has not been involved with the sale because it was canceled. “Love of country is an important tenet of Scouting, and Troop 64 practices patriotism by visiting veterans’ burial sites and placing flags for Memorial Day and wreaths for Christmas. In May, Troop 64 partners with Troop 16 and Troop 35 to place flags in five cemeteries in Lancaster city, East Lampeter Township, and Columbia. The tradition of laying wreaths began several years ago with Wreaths Across America at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery (IGNC) and has expanded to include cemeteries in Salunga and Landisville. Troop 64 also participates in the Flags Up ceremony in May and Flags Down ceremony in November at IGNC. While the patriotic activities are solemn occasions, Troop 64 also makes time for fun and challenges. Troop members typically attend Scout camps every summer and High Adventure camps as far away as New Mexico and Canada on alternating years. The troop’s monthly campouts are stepped up to twice a month in August through December. “They like winter camping, Nina

Boy Scout Troop 64 members have been building a raft as a hands-on learning experience. The group welcomes newcomers. commented. Troop 64 is chartered by Salem United Church of Christ of Rohrerstown, 2312 Marietta Ave., Lancaster, and typically meets there every Tuesday evening. However, the church has been closed since the stay-athome order was announced in March, so the troop suspended its meetings until it was safe to gather again. With precautions in place, the troop has met outdoors, sometimes at Camp Chiques, an aging Scout camp on Old Harrisburg Pike between Salunga and Mount Joy. “The boys have been doing improvement projects there, Nina said, noting that the Scouts cleared out downed trees, cleared

brush, and even powerwashed the latrines. “They’re building a raft right now to go down the creek in. Building a raft from empty barrels and fallen trees was not on this year’s program schedule, but the troop took advantage of the opportunity afforded by meeting outdoors. Every meeting has included cooking on a campfire, and they have been able to practice skills like fishing, boating, fire starting, lashing/tying knots, and wilderness survival. “They like being outside, Nina said. “They like to be together. Anyone who would like to join Troop 64 may contact Pat at 717-629-9254 or pevans2163@gmail.com.

Dylan Luong is writing his first book, “Bring Your Heart,” about his mother’s journey leaving Vietnam, surviving on the boat, living on Kuku Island for two years, and then finally arriving in the U.S. The book is scheduled for publication in December. Luong, a freshman at Drexel University, graduated from Hempfield High School, where he was a writer for the Knights Standard, the school newspaper. From seventh through 12th grades, he submitted short stories to the National Scholastic Art and Writing Contest. As an eighth-grader, he won a silver medal in the contest, which allowed him to travel to the award ceremony at Carnegie Hall in New York. Luong launched an Indiegogo fundraising campaign on July 17. The campaign will continue through Monday, Aug. 17. For more information or to donate, readers may visit www.indiegogo.com/projects/bring -your-heart-by-dylan-luong#/.
