A Starry Night For The Library Annual Benefit Auction Set For Aug. 24 By Chelsea Peifer

GUEST SPEAKER

Chiques United Methodist Church, 1215 E. Main St., Mount Joy, will host a free program, “The Life of a Service Dog,” at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 13, in Sloan Fellowship Hall. Joan Patterson will speak about the training service dogs undergo to develop their special skills, as well as how the dogs serve the people with whom they are matched. The program will begin with a brief devotional and will conclude with refreshments. The event is sponsored by the Chiques Elderberries seniors group. DONATION LOCATION

“Reach for the Stars” will be the theme of the Milanof-Schock Library’s 17th annual benefit auction, set to take place at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 24, at The Gathering Place, 6 Pine St., Mount Joy. Library board member Jean Witmer, who is co-chairing the event with Mindy Carreras and Kimberly Beach, said the starry theme felt doubly fitting with this year marking the 50th anniversary of the historic moon landing of Apollo 11 and the auction kicking off a campaign for a new roof for the library. People will have the opportunity to purchase a symbolic roof tile to help with the costs of installing a new roof on the library. Auction attendees will be served a

Select beverages will be available for an additional donation. Board vice president and professional disc jockey Stan Tucker will serve as master of ceremonies for the evening. “The auction is always a lot of fun, especially with Stan leading it,” Carreras remarked. Silent and live auctions will feature a selection of items and experiences including a Lancaster Barnstormers prize package with the opportunity to throw the first pitch, two 30-minute plane rides around the local area, a ride to school in a fire engine, handmade and framed cross-stitch pieces created by local crafters, many gift cards to area restaurants and attractions, and more. Sponsors Sought For New Disc Golf Course By Chelsea Peifer

A recent Garden to Table camp offered at Hamilton Elementary School for students in the School District of Lancaster was just one of the many summer programs led by The Edible Classroom.

The Edible Classroom Wraps Up Fruitful Summer By Chelsea Peifer

Just like spring, summer, and fall keep area farmers going nonstop, those seasons are busiest for The Edible Classroom as staff and volunteers share hands-on gardening lessons with

students throughout Lancaster County. From July 29 to Aug. 2, students from the School District of Lancaster (SDoL) met in the garden at Hamilton Elementary School for a Garden to Table camp led by Beth Horst, who along with Grace Julian co-founded The Edible Classroom as a nonprofit organization in 2018 in an effort to teach more students about growing their own food and to partner See The Edible Classroom pg 4

Plans are underway for a ninehole disc golf course to be installed throughout Little Chiques Park, 229 Park Ave., Mount Joy. Local residents Ben Heisey and Dave Christian had the idea for the course and consulted with Travis Dombach, a council member with Lancaster Area Frisbee Sports (LAFS), about potential course designs for the park, as Dombach was a key designer for the Ship Rock Disc Golf Course in Willow Street and the Muddy Run Disc Golf Course in Holtwood. The trio proposed the idea to the Mount Joy Borough Public Works Committee in September 2018 and the Mount Joy Borough Council in October 2018, and the idea was met with unanimous approval at both meetings. See Disc Golf pg 10

Area residents and businesses have the opportunity to sponsor tees on a new nine-hole disc golf course set to be constructed throughout Little Chiques Park in Mount Joy between the fall of 2019 and spring of 2020. The new course will join several others located throughout the county, such as the one at Buchmiller Park (pictured).

John Hess of Hess Auction Group will once again volunteer his time and expertise to serve as auctioneer for the live auction. The gold sponsors for the auction are Cargill and Lanco Federal Credit Union, and the silver sponsor is Mount Joy Foot and Ankle. “It’s so helpful to be able to depend on our local businesses, and they’re always very happy to support us,” said library director Barbara Basile. The community has turned out in spades to show its support for the library, as the auction has completely sold out for the past two years. Organizers encourage interested individuals to order tickets early, as seating is limited. To order tickets, readers may call 717-653-1510 or stop by the library, 1184 Anderson Ferry Road, Mount Joy. Tickets may be purchased individually or at a discounted rate for tables of eight or 10 people. Anyone interested in donating items or experiences for the live and silent auctions may email kbeach@mountjoy.lib.pa.us or scraine@mountjoy.lib.pa.us. with schools to create and sustain learning gardens and customized programs. Camp mornings kicked off with “Garden Yoga” as campers practiced stretching into poses, followed by plenty of time in the garden exploring and tending the plants. Each day featured a garden-related topic with a read-aloud story and activities, games, and crafts. “We were talking about pests and beneficials,” said Jameer, one of the campers. “And we talked about how you should not kill pollinators like bees and butterflies because they carry the pollen to the seed.” Plus, campers got the chance to harvest fresh items to prepare food to try like salsa, carrot cake pancakes, sautéed potatoes, and potato salad. “I’m just thrilled that these kids got to experience this, because many of them don’t have gardens or yards at home,” shared Horst. Some of the other summer offerings by The Edible Classroom included garden camps and enrichment programs at Park Elementary School in Columbia Borough School District, Brecht Elementary School in Manheim Township School District,

Conestoga Elementary School in Penn Manor School District, Manor Township Playground in the Parks, Teen Central in Manheim, Wee Care Day School in East Petersburg, and Power Scholars Academy offered through SDoL and the Lancaster Family YMCA. Julian noted that in the fall and spring The Edible Classroom helps schools throughout the county with planning curriculum-based garden lessons: “All of which teach them how to plant, tend, harvest, and enjoy the fruits of their labor,” she explained. On Saturday, Sept. 21, The Edible Classroom will host its second annual Watermelon Blaster 5K and Kids’ Fun Run for the community at 8:30 a.m. at Manor Middle School, 2950 Charlestown Road, Lancaster. All participants will receive a watermelon blaster: a favorite smoothie recipe of The Edible Classroom’s founders that combines fresh and frozen watermelon with a splash of lime. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three male and female finishers in three age categories. To register in advance, readers may visit www.theedibleclassroom.org/

5k-registration. Those who register by Friday, Sept. 6, will receive a discounted rate and a T-shirt. Packet pickup will be offered from 6 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 20, at Manor Middle School. Event-day registration and packet pickup will open at 7 a.m. The Kids’ Fun Run, free and open to children age 12 and younger, will begin at approximately 9:30 a.m. Other festivities on race day will include live music by Dreadnought Brigade and a watermelon seed spitting contest for children and adults, where the winners will receive watermelons. A portion of every Watermelon Blaster registration fee will go into a School Garden Grant fund. Grants will be awarded to three schools to use toward The Edible Classroom’s programming to establish or sustain a school garden in the 2019-20 academic year. To learn more about how to get involved, readers may search for “The Edible Classroom” on Facebook or visit www.theedibleclassroom.org. Volunteers are welcome to serve in various capacities.

On Wednesday, Aug. 14, individuals of all ages are invited to take part in a creek stomp hosted by the Chiques Creek Watershed Alliance (CCWA) at 6 p.m. The free event will take place rain or shine. Participants will gather at the pavilion at Mummau Park on West High Street in Manheim, and the creek stomp will take place in Rife Run. “The creek stomp is a great opportunity to get in the creek and explore,” said CCWA president Steve Gergely. “What we’re looking for specifically at the creek stomp are macroinvertebrates. It’s not something that I did as a kid, but my kids enjoy it every year.” Old shoes or sandals that can get wet are recommended, as attendees are encouraged to wade into the water and explore. Snacks and beverages will be provided. Accordingly to Gergely, the purpose of the creek stomp, which has become an annual event due to its success and popularity, is to discover the life within backyard streams and creeks. Organizers hope that participants will learn more about how the fish and insects within a waterway can indicate the overall health of the creek through the hands-on experience as they get their hands and feet wet. The creek stomp will be led by Matt Kofroth, a watershed specialist with the Lancaster County Conservation District who has been leading this event and others throughout the county for several years. Gergely said that last year’s event had a great crowd; however, due to the tremendous amounts of rain, Rife Run was running very high so organizers opted not to send participants into the creek. Instead, Kofroth pulled out a variety of macroinvertebrates for everyone to examine.

“The stream bank restoration projects along Rife Run, both in Mummau and Logan parks, have really helped with flood control in lesser storm events and with water quality,” said Gergely. He noted that an observation platform at Mummau Park and a pedestrian bridge over the creek at Logan Park, located just across the street, both offer great vantage points to view the restoration work. CCWA members will be available at the creek stomp to answer questions and provide information about the organization’s other ongoing efforts to promote good stewardship of the land within the Chiques Watershed. CCWA meets on the first Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m. at the Rapho Township building, 971 N. Colebrook Road, Manheim. New members and interested individuals are always welcome to attend. Thursday, Friday & Saturday 17, 1944, during the second day of the Battle of the Bulge. The 285th Field Artillery Observation Battalion suffered great loss by a German combat unit. The event was noted as the worst single massacre of American troops in World War II, and Billow is known as the last survivor. The July 14 patriotic service included congregation singing of Billow’s favorite hymn, “Amazing Grace.” The church sanctuary was decorated with a patriotic theme, as was the fellowship hall, where a festive covered dish luncheon took place after the service.

Attendees of Bethesda United Methodist Church’s patriotic service on July 14 welcomed guest speaker Harold Billow (front, center). Billow shared his account of the Malmedy Massacre.

The second Wednesday in August will once again see the occurrence of the Salunga Community Picnic. The 78th annual event will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 14, at the Hempfield Fire Department Pavilion in Salunga Park, located next to the fire station, 19 W. Main St., Landisville. Although the picnic is named for its location, attendance is open to everyone, regardless of residency. “There’s this (wrong) idea that you have to live in Salunga to come. You can live in Landisville to come. You can live anywhere. Invite your neighbor. That’s the whole point,” said Karen Haldeman, who has taken over coordinating the picnic from Stacey Cooper. Cooper had been the coordinator for an estimated 10 years and remains on the picnic committee. “I don’t want to see the picnic go away,” Haldeman said to explain her willingness to assume leadership of the event. Cooper and Haldeman have worked together on the picnic committee, which is always open to new members. “We need more volunteers,” Cooper added. “People say they like (the picnic), but it’s hard to get help. We feel like the event fails or succeeds on us. We need more community in our community event.”

hours away. She is filling in for her cousin, who is on vacation. “(Swope) said it’s kind of like a family reunion for her (to come back to the area where she grew up),” Haldeman related. Children’s games are slated for 5:30 p.m., although the committee is still looking for someone to organize that activity. Dinner will begin at 6 p.m. Attendees should bring their own meals and place settings. The picnic committee will provide ice cream, chips, and beverages. This year, the after-dinner schedule

Disc Golf from pg 1 Heisey and Christian anticipate that the course will be installed between the fall of 2019 and spring of 2020, with the help of donations from local businesses and community members to cover the cost of equipment, signs, and installation. The course will primarily be constructed by community volunteers and LAFS members, with some tasks - like pouring the concrete tee pads - requiring hired help. Heisey said that the total estimated cost of the project is between $5,000 and $6,000, which organizers are working to raise through sponsorships from local businesses and individuals. Prominent sponsors will receive recognition on the course overview sign and at the individual tee signs. Once funds are raised, Heisey said the construction of the course at Little Chiques Park should take no more than two months to complete. Individuals, organizations, and businesses interested in donating toward the project may email bsheisey@gmail.com for more information or pick up a sponsorship form at the Mount Joy Borough Office, 21 E. Main St., Mount Joy. Heisey noted that disc golf is a sport growing rapidly in the nation and particularly in southcentral Pennsylvania. The 2019 Amateur Disc Golf World Championships were held from July 20 to 27 across 10 courses in York and Lancaster counties, drawing nearly 700 competitors

from 11 countries, 43 states, and three provinces, according to www.pdga.com. “Adding a new course (in Mount Joy) is a great way to grow the sport of disc golf and expand the availability of the sport to people in new areas,” said Heisey, who has been playing the sport for seven years and has been a member of LAFS for five years. In addition to Ship Rock and Muddy Run, other disc golf courses in the county are located at Herr Park, Buchmiller Park, Overlook Park, and Manor Township Park in Lancaster, along with Roland Park in Akron. “Disc golf is a fun, family-friendly, and cost-effective way for people in the community to spend time outdoors,” Heisey described. LAFS conducts weekly league events that can draw more than 50 players on any given day, as well as tournaments throughout the summer, Heisey said. LAFS is dedicated to the well-being of its courses and the parks that hold them, operating according to its mission: “To grow and improve the sport of disc golf in Lancaster County and the surrounding areas by bringing together new and experienced players, promoting a friendly environment for club members, and bridging the gap between Lancaster Disc Golf Club and the community.” For more information on LAFS, readers may visit http://lafs-disc-golf.squarespace.com/.

GOTR from pg 1 Girls on the Run (GOTR) of Lancaster and Lebanon will launch its fall season on Monday, Sept. 9. Approximately 900 girls ages 8 to 14 on more than 66 teams will participate in the 10-week program. The girls, from Lancaster and Lebanon counties, will learn about self-esteem, positive body image, and setting and achieving goals through a curriculum that combines experiential games with physical activity to address the whole girl’s health, consisting of physical, emotional, mental, social and spiritual components. Hundreds of volunteer coaches facilitate the curriculum, and their efforts are sponsored by LOA Orthodontics. The program will prepare the girls for the Girls on the Run 5K, which will take place on Saturday, Nov. 23, at Millersville University at 9 a.m. The event will be presented by Orthopedic Associates of Lancaster. The girls will select running buddies to

join and encourage them on the course. The 5K event is a fundraiser and is open to the community. Girls on the Run of Lancaster and Lebanon, part of Girls on the Run International, is a nonprofit, physical-activity based, positive youth development program. The character development organization combines the healthy activity of running with an interactive 20-lesson curriculum designed to promote good choices for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living. For more information, to register or to volunteer, readers may visit www.gotrlancaster.org. To get involved on social media, readers may search for #GOTRLancaster. CVS Pharmacy, the retail division of CVS Health, has announced the expansion of its safe medication disposal program in Pennsylvania, adding disposal units in 80 CVS Pharmacy stores in communities across the state by the end of the year. This is in addition to the existing 26 units already installed, bringing the in state total to 106. Promptly disposing unused medications can help reduce the potential that they will be diverted or misused. Nationwide, the company has installed more than 1,300 in-store safe medication disposal units. The company has also donated more than 970 units to community organizations such as police departments, including 135 units in Pennsylvania. Through this national effort, 408 metric tons, or around 900,000 pounds, of unwanted medication has been collected, including over 41,000 pounds in Pennsylvania alone. CVS Pharmacy plans to roll out additional safe medication disposal units across the country by the end of 2019 as part of a commitment announced at the end of last year to help provide more disposal options in communities. The company is also partnering with Google Maps to make it easier for consumers to find year-round medication disposal options. CVS Health’s commitment to helping prevent and address prescription drug misuse extends to community education and increasing access to the opioid overdose-reversal drug naloxone. The company’s Pharmacists Teach program brings CVS pharmacists to schools across the country to talk to students and parents about the dangers of prescription drug abuse. More than 507,000 students across the country, including over 30,700 in Pennsylvania, have participated in the program. General information about CVS Pharmacy is available at www.cvshealth.com.

Town Talk To Focus On Local Millionaire The Marietta Community House, 264 W. Market St., will host its 2019 Summer Town Talk, part of the Sunday Afternoon Town Talks series, on Sunday, Aug. 11, at 2:30 p.m. Margaret Hunt Landis will present a slideshow titled “James Duffy: A Man of Mystery and a Millionaire.” Following the program, light refreshments will be provided by the board

of the Marietta Community House. Col. James Duffy was a 19th-century millionaire who was born in a log house in Marietta and died in his mansion there. He started his career piloting rafts on the Susquehanna River and amassed his wealth through various pursuits. Landis was raised with a devotion to historical research, especially exploration

of Lancaster County history, following in the footsteps of her grandfather and mother. She passed on to her love of history to her son, James Landis, who is noted for his work on Marietta history. Admission is free. For more information, readers may call Landis at 717-4261694. Information about the Marietta Community House is available at

www.mariettacommunityhouse.org. The Sunday Afternoon Town Talks are sponsored as a community service in accordance with the purpose of the organization, whose mission is to promote the spiritual, intellectual, educational, social and physical welfare of men, women and children. The next program will take place on Sunday, Oct. 20.
