Marching Band To Perform “The Spark” By Chelsea Peifer
How did the 33 members of the Donegal High School (DHS) marching band handle the intensity of the heat during the long days of band camp? “We pray for drink breaks, and we beg (marching band director) Mr. Sellers for drink breaks,” said senior Tara Shelton with a laugh. Tara serves as secretary on the band’s executive council, alongside president Remy Kanegene and vice president Connor Brackbill, who are also seniors at DHS. Band camp took place from
Aug. 5 to 10 at the school, with students putting in 13-hour days to learn and rehearse the drill and music for this year’s show, “The Spark: Illumination, Imagination, Innovation.” Marching band director Dale Sellers said that the show features a mixture of musical styles from concert band songs to pop music. “We wanted to do something a little different this year,” stated Sellers. “Last year we told a literal story with ‘Iron Horse: The Journey Across America,’ but this is a little more abstract.”
MUSIC AND ICE CREAM
will hold its final Music in Memorial Park event of 2019 on Sunday, Aug. 18. The park is located at 101 Marietta Ave., Mount Joy. The Chamber’s ice cream social will begin at 5 p.m., with ice cream, snacks and water available while supplies last. The Celtic Martins will play music from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The Delta Street side of Memorial Park features handicapped-accessible parking spaces, and a handicappedaccessible portable restroom is located behind the gazebo. In the case of inclement weather, the concert will be held at New Path Community Church, 22 W. Main St., Mount Joy. ANNUAL PICNIC

In other parts of the state, many 4-H clubs have folded or are dealing with dwindling attendance and involvement, but the Mount Joy 4-H Community
Club is bucking the trend. With the club having 130 members on the roster last fall, Community Club organizational leader Katina Musser said, “We were actually told that this is the largest club in the state.” See 4-H Club pg 2
Brad Jerman of Springboro, Ohio, will be the guest speaker at the third annual Hunt and Gather Sportsmen Dinner hosted by New Path Community Church on Sept. 14 in the gymnasium at Kraybill Mennonite School in Mount Joy. The evening will also include a full meal by Harvey’s Barbecue and numerous prizes.
The Mount Joy 4-H Community Club held its annual roundup on Aug. 5 at Mount Joy Mennonite Church. The event included a dinner and showcase of projects. While the projects were being scored by club leaders, the 4-Hers participated in STEM activities and art projects.

On Aug. 5, the gymnasium at Mount Joy Mennonite Church was packed with evidence of that as 4-H members, volunteers, and their families gathered for the annual roundup. The event featured a dinner and a showcase of projects that 4-H members had completed in their programs of study this year. While the projects were being scored by club leaders, the students participated in STEM activities and art projects. The evening ended with a recognition program. 4-H is a national program designed to help youths ages 5 to 18 develop knowledge and skills to become capable, caring, and contributing citizens. Children and teenagers may sign up to participate in projects such as sewing, photography, rocketry, beekeeping, candy making, backpacking, and more. Tie-dye, one of the new projects offered through the Mount Joy club this year, turned out to be very popular. According to Musser, the first 10 spots filled up so quickly that the club leader opened another group for 10 more students and still had a waiting list after that. Each participant got to make a shirt, towel, and pillowcase. Another
in-demand project his year was Science Fun, which focused on STEM activities and experiments. “We made volcanoes and ice cream and pop rocks,” said Aubrey Fry, 10, of Mount Joy. Mount Joy resident Amanda Ellenberger, 19, completed her final year in 4-H and hopes to return as a leader. “4-H holds a special place in my heart because it teaches skills you don’t normally learn,” said Amanda. This year, she took part in canoeing, strawberries, advanced sewing, calligraphy, and cake decorating. Aside from the unique skill sets she developed in projects such as those for her past 11 years as a 4-Her, Amanda said the club has helped her to develop confidence and leadership skills. Tate Garman, 10, of Manheim, said that rocketry was his favorite project. “We build the rockets out of empty soda bottles and then they shoot off with water pressure.” “I liked entomology. We learned how to identify different kinds of insects,” said Boyanna Dohner, 13, of Mount Joy. Musser noted that the Mount Joy club draws participants from not only Mount Joy and neighboring areas, but even further
Mount Joy 4-H Community Club members (front, from left) Sydney Brubaker, Faith Musser, Cole Eberly, (back) Amanda Ellenberger, Natalie Rodriguez, Cali Bryant, and Willow Weaver display cakes they decorated for the club’s annual roundup on Aug. 5. into Middletown and Lancaster. The Mount Joy club aims to be intentional in recruiting as many volunteers as possible to meet the growing interest levels of local children who wish to participate in 4-H projects. “We’ve started a new vision and grown into this new model where the kids get elected as club officers, and then we ask that one of their parents serve along with them on a leadership team,” explained Musser. “Last year, we created a prospective volunteer survey that we handed out to see what parents
might be interested in doing.” With the Mount Joy 4-H Community Club thriving and growing, Musser said her hope would be to see a planting of another 4-H club in another location. To learn more, readers may visit https://extension.psu.edu/ programs/4-h/counties/lancaster/ clubs/community/mount-joy or search for “Mount Joy 4-H Community Club” on Facebook. Interested individuals may call 717-3946851 or email lancasterext @psu.edu to inquire about volunteering or participating.

It was signed into law on July 30 by President Trump. Local American Legion Post 185, located at 255 W. Main St., Mount Joy, is also celebrating its 100 anniversary this year. 2019 Fair Baking Contests Posted
Remy, Connor, and Tara are excited to perfect the new show and present it to the public. “The music is really cool. It’s very focused on the woodwinds because we don’t have a lot of brass,” said Tara. Remy noted that learning the music in the show’s first song was challenging because it has a particularly fast tempo for an opening piece. “I hope that everyone’s going to appreciate how hard we work with the number of people we have,” remarked Remy. As one way to break up the long, tiring, sweaty days of camp, the band members dressed according to daily themes. This year’s themes included section colors, superheroes, white shirts, twin/multiples, induction shirts, and, last but not least, Lobster Day. Tara said this was the third year for Lobster Day, when everyone wears red shirts to see how closely their shirt matches their sunburn. The executive council and other DHS marching band seniors planned special games for the annual Induction Party, which was held at Connor’s house on the evening of Aug. 9 for all of the band members. Tara described the party as a time for all of the freshmen and new members to connect with

the returning members. The seniors chose a “Wild West” theme and created an elaborate game of bandits and cowboys for everyone to play. Another tradition to close out DHS band camp was the annual Tomahawk Feast on Aug. 10, followed by a preview of “The Spark” for family and friends at the stadium. The community can enjoy another performance of “The Spark” at the first DHS home football game against Elizabethtown Area High School, scheduled for 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 23. The stadium is located at 1025 Koser Road, Mount Joy. In addition to performing at football games, the DHS marching band will participate in the Manheim Farm Show parade, three local Memorial Day parades, and approximately seven competitions in the Tournament of Bands division. Sellers is joined in leading the band by Nichole Witman, assistant band director; Stan Tucker, visual coordinator; Richard Adams, show assistant; Tara Bennett, pit and percussion instructor; Justin Neideigh, marching instructor; Scott Muenz, marching instructor; Kami Dugan, head color guard instructor; and Taylor Bennett, assistant color guard instructor.

MERCHANDISER - Donegal Edition - August 14, 2019 - 15
Clothing Giveaway Slated For Aug. 24 Ruhl’s United Methodist Church (UMC), 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim, will host its 19th annual God’s Clothing Closet from 8 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 24. The community is invited to shop for free quality used clothing, footwear, and accessories for men, women, and children. Items will be available in all sizes and for all seasons. Organizer Kris Gray noted that the clothing is organized by size and displayed on racks and tables for ease of shopping. The facility is air-conditioned and handicapped-accessible, with plenty of parking available. A limited number of shopping bags will be available, so shoppers may want to bring their own. According to Gray, 568 people attended the 2018 God’s Clothing Closet event, making it the highest attendance on record. Before the doors opened, the waiting line extended past the Prayer Garden located beside the church parking lot. More than 500 hours of volunteer time at the church went into the event, Gray said, plus countless hours spent gathering, laundering, and mending clothing and preparing food for the day.
Attendees are encouraged but not required to bring donations of nonperishable food items or toiletries for the Manheim Central Food Pantry. Current needs at the food pantry include canned vegetables, jelly, saltines and other crackers, canned fruit, canned tuna and chicken, and Spam. Last year, five boxes of food were donated to the food pantry thanks to shoppers. The God’s Clothing Closet event will also have free Bibles and devotional materials available for adults and children. A limited number of quilts handmade by Ruhl’s church members will also be available for new mothers, and free on-site child care will be provided. Once folks are finished shopping, they are welcome to relax and enjoy musical entertainment, light refreshments, and a game room in an area separate from the clothing setup. Donations of children’s clothing only will be accepted at the church from Monday, Aug. 19, to Friday, Aug. 23. Leftover items will be donated to various local ministries. Readers with questions about the event may call the Ruhl’s UMC office at 717-665-3400.
