Plein air art event will support historical society

While brainstorming fundraising ideas for the Mount Joy Area Historical Society, board member Alyssa Zevallos had a lightbulb moment - host a plein air art event.

“I proposed the plein air idea because I am an artist myself and have participated in a number of plein air events in the last few years,” she recalled. “Plein air makes you see your local landscape in new and unique ways, and I wanted to share that experience.”

The Mount Joy Area Historical Society will host the Plein Air Quick Draw Event on Saturday,

Aug. 24, at locations throughout downtown Mount Joy.

The event will be held rain or shine, and participants must be at least 18 years old. Artists may paint anywhere within a 10-minute walk of the historical society building, located at 120 Fairview St., Mount Joy. They must bring their own supplies and equipment, and they will have two hours to paint.

Artists may paint anything they observe within the designated area, but they are encouraged to paint Mount Joy’s buildings as a way to capture the town’s history.

“This event is for all art enthusiasts!” Zevallos said. “It’s a great way to try something new and expand your skill set. I have always

felt encouraged and welcomed by our local plein air community and want to share that experience with anyone reading this who is thinking, ‘That might be fun.’’

Cash prizes will be awarded for first, second and third places, along with a people’s choice award prize basket. The event judge will be Matt Allyn Chapman, an artist who is a co-owner of curio. Gallery & Creative Supply in downtown Lancaster and a longtime professor at Pennsylvania College of Art & Design.

Zevallos is working with local businesses to gather sponsorships to cover the event costs, and funds collected from participant registrations as well as any art sales will benefit the historical society.

Combining hands-on fun with environmental education

When it’s hot, hot, hot outside, there’s no better way to cool down than splashing in the creek. On Monday, Aug. 19, you can embrace the water’s chilliness while also learning about the environment at the Chiques Creek Stomp. The event will be held in Little Chiques Park, 229 Park Ave., Mount Joy,

from 6 to 7 p.m.

“The creek stomp will provide the opportunity for participants to get in the stream and collect samples of the aquatic wildlife,” explained Tim Elder, treasurer of the Chiques Creek Watershed Alliance, which hosts the activity. “Representatives of the Lancaster County Conservation District will be on hand to

End of Summer Band Jam will benefit Susquehanna Stage

It takes a village to support the work of Susquehanna Stage, and events committee member Joni McCrady is hoping members of that village turn out for a special event happening later this month. The End of Summer Band Jam will be held from 4 to 10 p.m. on the gallery stage at Susquehanna Stage, 133 W. Market St., Marietta, on Saturday, Aug. 24. Performers at the fundraiser will be Ian Aston

and the Missing Peace, Tuesday Rains and Out of Nowhere.

Along with live music, the party will feature two food trucks located on Market Street in front of the theater, as well as drinks and desserts on sale in the concession area.

There is a charge for tickets, and proceeds from the event will benefit the community theater. “The theater is growing, and many updates are necessary to accommodate the growth to

The society soon plans to expand its archiving space so it can continue its mission to seek, preserve and make available the history of the Mount Joy area, she said.

The Mount Joy Area Historical Society was chartered over 50 years ago by a group of citizens concerned about the future of historical records and artifacts of the Mount Joy area.

“We are a 501(c)(3) organization and rely entirely on the efforts of our dedicated volunteers and members,” Zevallos shared. “Our museum is open Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m., and we hold monthly public meetings with a local history presentation every third Monday, March through

November. We will also be open for August’s Fourth Friday as the kickoff point for ‘Artful August,’ where kids and adults can complete a coloring page to hand in to participating local businesses for a reward.”

Participants in the plein air event are encouraged to preregister online at www.mountjoyhistory.com/ plein-air-quick-draw, but they may also register on the morning of the event. Same-day registration will be held from 8 to 10 a.m., with painting taking place from 10 a.m. to noon. Judging and public viewing will be held from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., followed by an awards ceremony. All artwork will be for sale. Registration

lessons for children from the local area. Vouchers for lessons with SwimAmerica will be made available to principals of local elementary schools to reward children who demonstrate good behavior. An effort will be made to direct these funds to students who might not otherwise be able to afford lessons.

The Mountville Pool, located at Froelich Park, was constructed beginning in 1985 and opened to the public in the summer of 1989. Following a shutdown during the pandemic, the pool reopened. The 2024 season marks the 35th anniversary of the pool.

While the creek stomp is fun for the whole family, it serves a bigger role than just entertainment, Elder said. “The purpose of the event is to educate people on the importance of keeping our streams clean to protect wildlife in the stream,” he shared.

The Chiques Creek Watershed Alliance is a volunteer-run organization with a mission to promote good stewardship of the land within the Chiques Creek Watershed in order to protect and preserve the Chiques Creek for the present community and future generations. The Chiques Creek Watershed covers approximately 126 square miles of area, almost all of which is in Lancaster County. Beginning in Lebanon County, the

Chiques Creek flows 31 miles to its confluence with the Susquehanna River near Marietta Borough. Six townships - East Hempfield, Mount Joy, Penn, Rapho, West Cornwall and West Hempfield - as well as two boroughs - Manheim and Mount Joy - have areas contained within the watershed. In addition to the creek stomp, the organization holds other community events and works with a variety of local organizations to promote environmental initiatives. Meetings are held at the Penn Township municipal building, 97 N. Penryn Road, Manheim, at 6 p.m. on the first Wednesday of the month.

There is no charge for the creek stomp, and no reservations are required. Participants should wear old shoes and clothes that they don’t mind getting wet and dirty. For more information on Chiques Creek Watershed Alliance, visit www.chiquescreekwatershed.com.

Talk to focus on the history of firefighting

The Mount Joy Area Historical Society will host Ty Lohr as guest speaker at its meeting at 7 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 19, at the Cemetery Road Schoolhouse, 120 Fairview St., Mount Joy. His program is titled “The History of Firefighting in Lancaster.” The story of firefighting in Lancaster County goes back to when horses hauled hoses through Lancaster city to extinguish fires set by a

“fire-fiend” gang. The birth of the City of Lancaster’s fire department - one of the first paid fire departments in the state - coincided with the rise of photography, which visually captured the profession’s evolution throughout the 19th century to the present.

Lohr will share his research into the formative years of the profession in the county up to the present day.

Talk about a walk-in closet. When Ruhl’s Church hosts its annual clothing giveaway, the selection will fill the gym at the church, located at 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim.

God’s Clothing Closet, featuring free clothing, footwear and accessories for people of all ages, will be held on Friday, Aug. 23, and Saturday, Aug. 24. Friday’s event will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. by appointment only. On Saturday, the giveaway will be open from 8 to 11 a.m., and no appointment is necessary. To make an appointment for Friday, call or text 717-201-7566.

“This is our 24th year of God’s Clothing Closet,” said Kris Gray, who is chairing the event with Barb Dun -

mire. “Our volunteers put in hundreds of hours sorting clothing and getting everything ready.”

All clothing is inspected to be sure it’s clean and in good condition, she said. “We have clothing in all sizes, all seasons,” Gray noted. “This is some great ‘new to you’ clothing, and everybody’s welcome.”

for the Manheim Central Food Pantry if shoppers wish to bring some. Food donations are not required to attend the event.

“Back to school is right around the corner, and there is a need for something like this in the community,” Dunmire said.

“Back-to-school shopping can be very expensive.”

the giveaway, either. Leftovers are donated to Jubilee Ministries in Manheim.

Last year, the church served about 443 shoppers over the two-day event. Shoppers donated a box of food to the pantry as well as close to $200 in cash to purchase more Bibles.

Although it requires time and effort to host God’s Clothing Closet, it’s important to the members of Ruhl’s Church, who are always looking for ways to connect with the larger community. The giveaway provides an opportunity to support people in need while also raising awareness of the church and bringing people into the building, who may then seek additional information on the church, its services and its outreach programs.

At least half of the gym is filled with women’s clothing, with clothing for men and children sharing the other half, Gray said. “We get prom gowns. We’ve had wedding dresses, fancy dress clothes, maternity clothes, nursing scrubs,” Gray said. “The whole family can get something.”

A table of free devotional materials will be set up for shoppers to peruse, and food donations will be collected

It takes a lot of help to be able to provide God’s Clothing Closet for the community, Gray said. Last year, more than 50 volunteers donated more than 300 hours of their time from setup to cleanup. Nothing goes to waste with

Gray explained that the inspiration for the giveaway came from another service project of the church. For years, church members collected clothing to donate to a mission in Appalachia, but the expense of sending the clothing added up. When Gray started talking to local families that participated in a meal giveaway at the church, she realized the church could make an impact in its own community.

Although the giveaway is open to anyone regardless of need, it is especially impactful to see how the free items positively affect some of the shoppers, Gray said.

“We feel really blessed to be able to do this event,” she explained. “There are so many people who are in need. So many stories come back to us from people saying how much this meant to them. People look you in the eye when they leave and say, ‘Thank you. This was a big help for us.’”

Clothing donations for God’s Clothing Closet will be accepted at the church beginning on Monday, Aug. 19. Donations may be left under the covered front porch at the church, and labeling the bag with the size and type of clothing is helpful.
