DHS Marching Band Prepares For “Iron Horse” By Chelsea Peifer

“I live for band camp. I love it,” said Anika Weaver, who serves as vice president of the Donegal High School (DHS) marching band. “We’re a huge family.” Her fellow executive officers, president Regina Redinger and secretary Clark Mummau, echoed that enthusiasm as they reflected on the week. “You know it’s going to be really hard, but it’s worth it,” said Regina. Donegal band camp consisted of 13.5-hour days from Aug. 6 to 11 outside the school in heat and humidity where the students learned and rehearsed the drill and music for this fall’s show, “Iron Horse: The Journey Across America.” The show is about the first transcontinental railroad with different songs representing the land before and after it was built as well as backdrops illustrating sunset and nighttime on the open prairie. “It’s a very

high-energy show reflecting the movement of a train,” said Clark. “Everyone’s excited about it, and it’s nice to see that.” Anika, Clark, and Regina, all DHS seniors, agreed that the music for this year’s show is easier than last year, but the drill is more intense. “It’s very close together, so all of the sets are intricate, which makes it easy to (accidentally) hit each other,” Regina shared. Thankfully, band camp served its core underlying purpose of unifying the students as they worked to perfect the music and movement for a successful season. “The group dynamics are good, and usually that takes a while to set in,” said Regina. Each grade level is well represented in the band, creating a good mix of experienced and amateur marchers. One of the traditions that Donegal seniors carry on each year to help the freshmen get involved and learn to know everyone better is a senior questions See DHS Marching Band pg 6

Golf For Hope Set For Sept. 21 By Chelsea Peifer

Hope Within Ministries’ fifth annual Golf for Hope tournament is set to take place on Friday, Sept. 21, at Deer Valley Golf Course, 101 Stoudt Road, Hummelstown. “It’s a beautifully scenic course. Golfers of all skill levels really seem to like it,” said Donita Sturgis, president and cofounder of Hope Within Ministries. Sturgis noted that one of the reasons that Hope Within hosts its event at the course each year is the excellent job that course manager Bill Wall does in running the tournament effectively. “The golfers really appreciate how well it is run,” Sturgis said. The tournament will feature a fourperson scramble format. Registration will open at 12:30 p.m., and play will See Golf For Hope pg 8

Kate Green, Kathy Kuhns, Maureen Lewandowski, and Connie Radziewicz are just a few of the 20-plus women who make up the Teal Sisters, a multigenerational support group for women diagnosed with ovarian cancer. After crossing paths at the office of Dr. Jacqueline Evans, a Lancaster-area gynecologic oncologist, the ladies began meeting together in 2015 on the fourth Tuesday of each month to talk and support one another. Teal is the color that symbolizes ovarian cancer, so the ladies also sport the shade for Teal Tuesdays. “We met informally at each other’s houses but decided in addition to talking about where we were and laughing, we’d (raise) some awareness, because ovarian cancer is silent,” explained Green. “But we’re not silent about it.” To jumpstart those efforts, the Teal Sisters marched in the Millersville Parade in 2017, flanked by a teal pickup truck as they handed out teal mints and lollipops and information about ovarian cancer and its symptoms. According to Lewandowski, who leads educational presentations on the topic with other Teal Sisters, ovarian cancer is usually not detected until it has progressed to stage three or four, but early detection can mean the difference between life and death. Lewandowski references the BEAT acronym provided by the NormaLeah Ovarian Cancer Initiative when teaching others about the symptoms, which include: Bloating that is persistent; Eating less, feeling fuller;

Abdominal and/or back pain; and Trouble with bladder and bowels. “The big thing is if the symptom lasts for more than two weeks,” emphasized Lewandowski. Many women are unaware that a Pap test does not test for ovarian cancer; therefore, Lewandowski urges women to be their own advocate and request an ovarian cancer screening if they are experiencing any symptoms. “All of our stories are different, but every single one of us at one point said something like, ‘Well, I thought it was just fill-inthe-blank, but then it wouldn’t go away,’” said Lewandowski. “You don’t want to think you have cancer.” “Most of the people in the group have ovarian cancer, but we’d like to increase awareness for all types of gynecological cancers,” Lewandowski continued. “The important thing for people to know is that there’s treatment. The doctors are very conscious of the quality of your time.” Green added, “Your life does not stop. I went to the China in the middle of my chemotherapy. There are options out there, and if one doesn’t work, you try something else.” The Teal Sisters make it a point to say they are “living with cancer” rather than the commonly heard alternative of “dying with cancer.” “We’re not gloom and doom,” said Radziewicz. In September, which is National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, the Teal Sisters will take part in Turn the Towns Teal, a national campaign to promote awareness of the symptoms and risk factors associated with ovarian cancer. The ladies encourage individuals, businesses, and

communities throughout Lancaster and York to get involved by displaying biodegradable teal ribbons on their property. Some towns participate by turning fountains teal or lighting up buildings at night with teal spotlights. Lewandowski recalled that the Pennsylvania State Capitol was aglow in teal for the month of September last year. The Teal Sisters will be tying teal ribbons along Hellam Street in Wrightsville and, they hope, in as many other locations as possible. To order teal ribbons and learn more about Turn the Towns Teal, readers may visit www.turnthetownsteal.org. On Friday, Sept. 7, the Teal Sisters will have an ovarian cancer awareness table at the Lancaster Barnstormers game at the team’s home stadium, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster, and one of the members will have the chance to throw the first pitch. Individuals and organizations that would like to inquire about having the Teal Sisters give an educational presentation on the risk factors and subtle symptoms of ovarian cancer may contact Radziewicz at conniesratt@comcast.net. Pictured on front: The Teal Sisters, represented by (from left) Kathy Kuhns, Maureen Lewandowski, Connie Radziewicz, and Kate Green, are a group of women from Lancaster and York who meet monthly to support each other as they navigate ovarian cancer. Pantry are encouraged but not required. Currently, items needed for the food pantry include canned fruit, canned meat and soups, peanut butter, strawberry jelly, cereal, and boxed potatoes. Last year, God’s Clothing Closet welcomed 465 shoppers - most of whom arrived in the first hour, Gray said. “The line of shoppers before we opened the doors stretched to the Prayer Garden, and some of those shoppers arrived before 5:30 a.m.,” recounted Gray. “Several shoppers who attend every year took the time to stop and thank us for this needed ministry and how it personally blessed them.” In addition to giving away clothing, approximately 220 Bibles and 37 handmade comforters were distributed to guests at the 2017 event. Five large boxes of nonperishable food donated by shoppers were given to the Manheim Central Food Pantry. Any items left over at the event’s end will be donated to Community Aid. Collecting clothing, shoes, and accessories for the next God’s Clothing Closet is a yearlong process, and donations of quality used items are welcome at any time. For more details on making a donation or about God’s Clothing Closet, readers may call the church at 717-665-3400.

“It’s a huge event, and it’s a lot of fun.” That is how organizer Kris Gray succinctly described God’s Clothing Closet, an annual clothing giveaway held at Ruhl’s United Methodist Church, 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim, held just in time for the dawning of a new school year. “We have people who come because they want something new and some people who are in desperate need of something,” shared Gray. The community is invited to shop for free quality used clothing, footwear, and accessories for men, women, and children in all sizes and for all seasons at this year’s event on Saturday, Aug. 25, from 8 to 11 a.m. Clothing is organized by size and displayed on clothing racks or tables for ease of shopping. The facility is air-conditioned and handicapped-accessible, and it has plenty of parking. On-site child care will be offered while parents shop.

Mental health counseling is provided on a self-pay, income-based sliding scale fee with no other eligibility requirements. Hope Within staff and intern therapists offer a scope of therapeutic services, including individual, couple, family, premarital, and marital therapy. Hope Within is in the process of partnering with two area colleges that offer master’s-level counseling programs in order to obtain more counselors and be able to expand and accept more individuals who are in need of mental health services. “We want to be a place of early access to help, explained Sturgis. “The wait can be long to access care. Lifecycles Posts Members’ Achievements Lifecycles recently celebrated two members’ achievements. Seth Eaby of Manor Township has earned an Air Force ROTC scholarship to attend Embry Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona, Fla., this fall. He plans to study engineering and pursue his dream of becoming an Air Force pilot. Eaby graduated from Penn Manor High School this year with a 4.46 GPA. He attends Community Fellowship Church in Lancaster and has been mentored in the Lifecycles program for four years, serving as a junior leader during his final year. Austin Hillegass, a rising sophomore at Manheim Township High

School, has been named to the dean’s list and has earned Lifecycles’ 3,000 Mile Award. The award recognizes Hillegass for the highest mileage and best attendance in the program during his four years in Lifecycles. Upon presenting Hillegass with the award, director Lee DeRemer said the achievement is equivalent to departing Lancaster by bicycle and peddling to Guatemala. Hillegass plans to study mechanical engineering at Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology in Lancaster or join the Marines. He attends the Lancaster campus of LCBC. The mission of Lifecycles is to

share his hunting stories from across the United States, which are filled with successes, failures, mishaps, and laughter. Ledford will also bring along his hunting mounts for folks to see. New Path Commnunity Church pastors Jay and Jean Frey connected with Ledford through last year’s sportsmen dinner speaker. “Our heart is just to bring the community together for love of the outdoors,” explained Jay. “If you love the outdoors and hunting and fishing, this is one (event) you don’t want to miss.” The Freys received a tremendous amount of feedback after last year’s inaugural event and are excited to offer the event to the public once again. “Our vision is to double attendance,” shared Jay. Jean, who is an avid hunter like Jay, said that she would like to see more women and youths attend this year’s event. “It’s really for everybody,” Jean

remarked. All Hunt and Gather Sportsmen Dinner attendees will be entered to win a variety of hunting-, fishing-, and outdoors-themed giveaways.
