Dedicated to Donegal Bash and Benefit will support nonprofit
BY CATHY MOLITORISAsk Scott Ney where his loyalty lies, and he won’t hesitate to answer. “I bleed green having been from this school district and living here my entire life,” said the Donegal School District school resource officer (SRO). “I enjoy working with the admin, staff and especially the students.”
Ney was recently recognized for his dedication to Donegal when he won the Pennsylvania Association of School Resource Officers (PASRO) 2023 Sgt. Mike Hayes SRO of the Year Award. This statewide honor was presented to Ney in late July at an awards dinner in Harrisburg during the 2023 PASRO School Safety Conference.
Ney didn’t know he’d been nominated for the award, and he later found out Donegal High School assistant principal Nichole Roberts had submitted his name.
Ney has been an SRO for seven years, and he said he loves everything about his job.“I love that I get to give back to the school district I graduated from in 1987,” he stated. “Seeing students going through from maybe having some troubles in or out of school and watching them eventually cross the podium at graduation is a highlight.”
Challenges of his job include working with students who distrust law enforcement due to a bad experience at home or elsewhere, he said. “Most of my days consist of just trying to bridge the gap between students and police,” he commented. “I assist students, staff and faculty in many situations. Many things I do either through the job or volunteer are to build that rapport and trust, which will only make for a safer educational atmosphere.”
Ney explained that SROs fill many roles in a school settinglaw enforcement, informal school counselor/mentor and public safety educator. He is trained in
child development, de-escalating techniques and encouraging responsible decision making. Ney assists with teaching some classes in the district and volunteers as a coach for the football and softball teams. “I have volunteered as a chaperone for 45-plus highschoolers to travel to Europe for two weeks on a World War II Western Front educational tour,” he said.
After graduating from Donegal High School, Ney entered the Marine Corps Reserve and served for 15 years. He started his law enforcement career as a deputy for the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office and then worked for the Lancaster
City Bureau of Police. His SRO role is through Susquehanna Regional Police Department, where he’s worked since 2004, holding several positions, including firearms instructor and field training officer. He also served with the Lancaster County Special Emergency Response Team.
Ney, who lives in Marietta with his wife, Ronda, and is the father of one son, said he can’t imagine doing anything other than helping others.
“I am so glad to be able to give back to Donegal and the entire Donegal community in the role as law enforcement and as an SRO within the district schools,” he said.

Astronomy Enthusiasts of Lancaster County are seeing stars
BY JEFF FALKScience is all around us. And for some, the best way to get in touch with the coolest science is to simply look up.
The members of Astronomy Enthusiasts of Lancaster County (AELC) were so enamored of the study of the stars that they formed their own club.
Sixty members strong, the AELC meets for two evening hours on the first Wednesday of every month in the community room of the Lititz Public Library, 651 Kissel Hill Road. Members of the club derive great
enjoyment from observing the night sky, exploring it and sharing information pertaining to it.
“(Astronomy is) the oldest science,” said AELC’s treasurer, Tom Lugar. “Ancients would look to the stars for answers. It’s something that goes back to a time when men looked up to the sky to see stars. It incorporates all the other sciences.”
The club’s meetings consist of presentations and lectures on astronomy, and the last half-hour is typically reserved for discussion. But the AELC also meets once or twice a month outside to observe celestial phenomena as a group, and

Youths invited to apply for program
The Keystone State ChalleNGe Academy (KSCA) is accepting applications for its fourth class of cadets which will begin in January 2024. The KSCA is designed to give academically challenged teens a second chance at obtaining their basic education, and learning leadership, self-discipline and responsibility while working toward finishing their education and building a better life.
The opening of the academy at Fort Indiantown Gap (FTIG) in Lebanon County in July 2022 formally established the National Guard Bureau’s Youth ChalleNGe Program in Pennsylvania.
The program is open to 16to 18-year-old Pennsylvania residents who are failing to progress in high school or may not be on a clear path to graduating. Applicants must be willing to be drug free, to be free of felony convictions and to voluntarily commit to the program. The program lasts for 17 months, with the first five months consisting of residential training at FTIG followed by one year of mentorship back in their home communities.
For detailed eligibility requirements and to begin the application process, visit www.dmva.pa.gov/Keystone StateChallengeAcademy and choose the Eligibility and Admissions page. To have an

Many members of the AELC own complex equipment used to visually explore space, like telescopes, binoculars and even observatories.

application mailed or to talk with someone about the program, contact the academy at RA-MVPACHALLENGE @pa.gov, 717-861-7767 or 717-861-8831.
The KSCA is a joint effort between the Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA) and the National Guard Bureau in consultation with the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE).
Cadets are introduced to the military structure and focus on eight core components: academic excellence; physical fitness; leadership/followership; responsible citizenship; job skills; service to the community; health and hygiene; and life coping skills. Graduates often receive high school credits, credentials or a GED. There is no tuition cost to attend. Meals, housing, uniforms and school supplies are provided at no charge.
Since the ChalleNGe program’s inception in 1993, more than 200,000 young people have completed the program nationwide. The program has been recognized with awards.
The National Guard Youth ChalleNGe Program currently operates 39 Youth ChalleNGe sites in 30 states and territories. The program is both federally and state funded. More details can be found at the previously mentioned website.
The popularity of astronomy exploded in the 1960s and 1970s with the space race and Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin’s landing on the moon. But while we as a species know more about supernovas, eclipses and black holes than we did back then, there is seemingly an infinite amount of information about space that is still left to discover.
“There’s a lot happening in the night sky that people aren’t seeing anymore,” said Lugar. “The night sky is one of our natural resources, but now you can’t see it because there’s light pollution. Our goal is to inform the public that there’s a lot going on in the night sky if you know where to look and know where to go.”
As a club, the AELC was formed in the late 1980s by a dozen science-minded individuals at the North Museum of Nature and Science in Lancaster. The club’s numbers grew in the early 2000s before the AELC relocated its home base to the Lititz Public Library about a decade ago.
“I think the club has reached a point where it should be,” said Lugar. “Some people want to see the lectures and learn, and they may not be interested in seeing the night sky. Then there’s a hardcore group of guys who have a lot of money invested. It’s
The Keystone 10 Million Trees Partnership is accepting nominations for the annual Mira Lloyd Dock Partnership Diversity Award, given in recognition of conservation work in environmental justice communities in Pennsylvania.
In Pennsylvania, the Department of Environmental Protection considers any census block group where 20% or more individuals live in poverty or 30% or more of the population identifies as a minority to be in an environ-
mental justice area.
The Keystone 10 Million Trees Partnership, coordinated by the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, welcomes nominations of anyone in Pennsylvania who has shown exemplary leadership in his or her community through environmental restoration, awareness, education or conservation work. This work includes community tree plantings, rain garden or native pollinator garden installation or plantings,
regenerative agriculture or urban farming or permaculture, or community beautification in an environmental justice community.
Nominees are ranked on their community engagement, collaboration and environmental conservation work with environmental justice communities in support of planting 10 million trees in Pennsylvania. Nominees are given credit for using science, research, innovative and creative approaches to conservation. A volunteer committee of environmental leaders, past Dock Award winners, and others will determine the winners.
To submit a nomination, visit https://tenmilliontrees .org/contact/mld/. Forms are also available by emailing key stonetrees@cbf.org or calling 717-200-4543. The deadline for nominations is Friday, Sept. 29. The award winners will receive $5,000 worth of native trees and supplies from
the partnership, to be used for a 2024 tree project.
Now in its fourth year, the award was created to honor the spirit of Mira Lloyd Dock, who pursued urban beautification and forest conservation at a time when women and people of color were not welcomed at the decision-making table.
Dock is recognized as the first Pennsylvania woman to lead the way in forest conservation. She was an advocate for Penn’s Woods and in 1901 was appointed to the State Forestry Reservation Commission by Pennsylvania Gov. William Stone.
The Keystone 10 Million Trees Partnership will present the award during the Pennsylvania Forestry Association’s annual symposium on Saturday, Nov. 4, at Toftrees Golf Resort in State College.
To learn more about the Keystone 10 Million Trees Partnership, visit www. TenMillionTrees.org.
Conservation advocates win awards
The Pennsylvania Association of Conservation Districts (PACD) recently held its annual conference in Harrisburg. Several conservationists were recognized during an awards luncheon on July 19. The Legislator Leadership Award was presented to Sen. Scott Martin, who was nominated by the Lancaster County Conservation District. This award recognizes legislators for outstanding efforts to further the activities and accomplishments of the state’s conservation districts or PACD on a statewide basis. As chairman of the Appropriations Committee, Martin is an advocate for conservation efforts across the state. He worked to enact the legislation that created the new statewide Agricultural Conservation Assistance Pro-
gram, which represents a $154 million investment to help improve water quality and soil health. Martin was also instrumental in providing additional funding to conservation districts for their operational needs through the state budget process.
Sen. Scott Martin (center) accepted the Legislator Leadership Award and received congratulations from (from left) PACD North Central Region director Dr. Robert Shannon, Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection Secretary Richard Negrin, Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture Deputy Secretary Greg Hostetter, and PACD president Kelly Stagen.
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDMennonite Life, 2215 Millstream Road, Lancaster, will host a guest speaker event for its members on Thursday,
Aug. 24, at 7 p.m. The event will feature presentations from author and Bluffton University professor Gerald Mast, who will explore the life and writings of Menno Simons and his role in the foundation of the modern-day Anabaptist church.
Simons was a Dutch priest who was born in the late 15th century. He was ordained in the Roman Catholic church circa 1515, but he began to question its teachings in the years following. One of Simons’ primary points of contention with the church was the concept of infant baptism, which he believed to have no basis in Scripture; he aligned with the Anabaptist movement and officially
departed from the Roman Catholic church in 1536. Simons became one of the most influential figures in the Dutch Anabaptist religion, resulting in the term Mennonite being derived from his first name.
Mast will detail Simons’ ideology and shed light on the experiences that influenced his teachings, including Simons’ concept of “true evangelical faith.” The concept revolves around a hopeful approach toward one’s neighbors, salvation and relationship with God. Mast will explain the five theological characteristics of Simons’ teaching: converting to Jesus Christ in a personally transformative way, confessing to

receives a strong appreciation for how Menno influenced the direction of the Mennonite church and a new curiosity about how his writings can help the church today,” Mast said.
In the Mennonite Life Community Room, audience members will have an opportunity to ask questions about Mast’s work, which includes a series of articles on the heritage of Pennsylvania Mennonites. Mast was inspired to write the series after he noticed that Simons’ writing possessed an eloquence that distinguished it from many other works within the religion. Mast was also fascinated by Simons’ decision to join the Anabaptist movement during a time when it had
resorted to violent methods. Although more translations and editions of Simons’ work exist today than those of any other Anabaptist writer, Mast felt that it had been paid less attention in recent years.
During the event, attendees will have an opportunity to view a 1681 edition of Simons’ writings in Dutch, which will be accompanied by an illustration by Jan Luyken. Luyken was an engraver who created the images found in “Martyr’s Mirror,” a book of stories that remains highly significant to both Mennonite and Amish communities today.
Mennonite Life members may attend the free event in person or via Zoom. For more information, visit www. mennonitelife.org/events.

International Overdose Awareness Day is observed around the world on Aug. 31. It is a day to acknowledge the grief felt by families and friends remembering those who have died from a drug overdose, and it aims to reduce the stigma of a drug-related death. Hospice & Community Care’s Pathways Center for Grief & Loss will host an event to recognize International Overdose Awareness Day. It is open to anyone regardless of if
their loved one was served by Hospice & Community Care.
The event will be held on Thursday, Aug. 31, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Pathways Center for Grief & Loss, 4075 Old Harrisburg Pike, Mount Joy, and will feature keynote speaker Lori Kuhn, a boardcertified registered nurse, certified grief counselor and grief recovery method specialist. Landis Valley to reopen historic house
Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum will reopen the ground floor of the 1815 Brick Farm House on Friday, Sept. 1. The building has been closed for repairs, and the project was delayed due to the museum’s pandemic closure and issues with contracting.
The interior work included re-securing historic ceiling plaster to its lath, repairing water damage to walls, and painting all of the walls and woodwork. New exhibit panels tell the story of the generations of the Landis family that lived in the house as well as other facets of life in Landis Valley. In addition, the front porch was rebuilt, and the rain gutters were replaced.
Prior to the building’s closure, it could only be viewed during a tour or when
staffed. The house will now reopen as a self-guided building.
