It takes years of hard work to become an Olympic athlete, but just seconds for that dream to come crashing down.

Mount Joy native and Manheim

Central alumna Jillian Wolgemuth knows all about that.

In her team’s second-to-last match before the Paris Olympics, Jillian, a member of USA Field Hockey, received the ball and took off running.

“I was running and cut left and felt a pop in my knee,” recalled the defensive player. “My first thought as I fell to the ground was, ‘I just tore my ACL.’”

Injuring the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), which stabilizes the knee, is devastating for athletes, Jillian shared, noting that it requires surgery and a long rehab - sometimes up to a year before resuming play.

“I’m a very logical person,” Jillian said. “I knew right when it happened that I had a decision to make. No matter what, I was not going to the Olympics. I had to change course.”

The experience of missing the Paris Olympics tested her confidence, impacted her self-esteem and, ultimately, underscored her faith.

“I decided, ‘Do I want to wake up every day, be miserable and feel sorry for myself?’” she said by phone from Charlotte, N.C., where she lives as a member of USA Field Hockey. “Don’t get me

wrong - I do feel sorry for myself. But I decided to attack rehab with all of the energy I have, to stay positive and to focus on the things I can control.”

As she continues her recovery, Jillian is leaning on friends, family and her church community. “I have a very tight group of women who have helped me realize there’s a bigger picture. It’s not all about Jillian gaining the title of ‘Olympian,’” she shared. “God has a plan, and I am going to focus on the positives.”

Growing up in Mount Joy, the daughter of Randy Wolgemuth and Betsy Ebersole played field hockey for the first time in middle school while attending Kraybill Mennonite School.

“I grew up playing every sport,” she said. “I loved anything that involved a ball. At the time, I was looking for a fall season sport to play, because soccer was a spring sport at Kraybill, and my mom suggested I try field hockey.”

She soon realized she loved the sport.

“It’s a very fun, very fast-moving sport, which I really enjoy. It’s very dynamic,” she commented. “It’s a nice mix between skillful and technical and having to be quite athletic.”

Jillian continued to play field hockey at Manheim Central High School, graduating in 2016. She played for four years at Duke University before graduating in 2020.

In January of her senior year in

college, she tried out for the U.S. team but wasn’t chosen, so she faced a decision: work to become a professional athlete after graduation or pursue a job in her major, political science.

She decided to pursue hockey as a career and began playing for a team in the English league before coming home after one season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In the spring of 2021, she was

“This event is a social gathering for MCCS families to get to know each other as well as a fun community event for all ages,” said Lindsay Norris, director of development and community relations, describing the Mount Calvary Christian School (MCCS) benefit auction.

The event will take place on Friday, Sept. 27, and Saturday, Sept. 28, at the school, 629 Holly St., Elizabethtown. Friday’s festivities will begin with dinner at 4:30 p.m. “We will have meals available for dine-in or takeout,” Norris said, noting that the dinners will feature Harvey’s Main Street BBQ pulled pork, baked beans, macaroni and cheese, a roll and a drink. Both adult and child portions will be offered. Dine-in meals will be served at the school. Takeout meals will be available for drive-through pick up at the school’s west campus, 35 Elm Ave., Elizabethtown. Friday evening will also feature a variety of live and silent auctions. Hess Auctioneers will oversee the live auction portion.

“Our main auction time is on Friday,” said Eric Stone, incoming auction chair and a member of the auction committee. “We have auctions

On Saturday, the event will kick off with an allyou-can-eat breakfast buffet beginning at 8 a.m., followed by live auctions starting at 9 a.m.

“Saturday’s auctions feature home décor, tools and sports memorabilia,” Stone said.

Also on Saturday, Kids Fest will be held on the soccer fields at the school from 9 a.m. to noon.

“It’s a great way to get a meal, and it’s an opportunity to have fun,” Norris said.

“We’ll have a variety of carnival-type games. It’s student run, and the proceeds will go toward the National Honor Society,” Norris said. Kids Fest will also feature a dunk tank, cotton candy and snowcones.

MCCS has been holding a benefit auction event since the early 1990s.

She’s been using her recovery time to focus on the future. At 26, she has years ahead of her in the sport, she said, noting that many female hockey players play professionally into their 30s. She’s also not ruling out the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

On Saturday, Sept. 21, you can enjoy dinner while supporting a great cause. A Fall Benefit Banquet for Mt. Hope Nazarene Retirement Community will be held at Manheim Brethren in Christ Church, 54 N. Penryn Road, Manheim. Doors will open at 5 p.m., and the meal will be served at 5:30 p.m.

The homestyle meal will be prepared by volunteers as well as Peters’ BBQ and Amy’s Mixing Bowl. The menu will feature cranberry-orange sweet bread with vanilla icing streusel, sliced roast beef with savory brown beef gravy, gourmet cheesy potatoes, sweet and sour saucy green beans with bacon, a broccoli-cauliflower-carrot blend, creamy coleslaw, homemade soft dinner rolls with butter, a choice of desserts and drinks.

Following the meal, a short program will take place with guest speakers, personal sharing and special music. This year’s banquet will feature themed baskets in both silent and live auctions. Baskets will include homemade and donated items from local businesses and individuals, experiences and gift cards to local attractions and retail stores, as well as passes to events and local entertainment hot spots, said Kris Wilson, director of advancement for Mt. Hope. “Also, part of the fundraiser (will include) catered meals that attendees will be able to bid on which are offered in homes of those with a personal connection to Mt. Hope as well as homemade pies, cakes and breads,” she commented.

The banquet provides

/ $4 Pt.

much-needed funding for the retirement community, Wilson said. “The mission of Mt. Hope will be shared, and attendees will also hear personal stories of how Mt. Hope touched people’s lives when they needed answers and provided a way to help families in need,” she stated. “Mt. Hope continues to be an inviting and welcoming place for everyone who needs our services. We continue strong in our founding mission to provide affordable, quality care in an environment based on Christ’s model of care for ‘the least of these,’ regardless of someone’s resources or ever-changing financial and personal circumstances.”

This will be Mt. Hope’s third annual banquet fundraiser, she said, adding, “It’s our largest giving opportunity for the community to support our work. We will strive to exceed our goal of $55,000, which is what was so generously shared last year.”

People attending the banquet will have the opportunity to hear about

everything Mt. Hope has accomplished over the past few years. “We will share the most recent updates and news about our endeavor to expand with building two new independent, single-floor living duplex cottages on our campus,” Wilson said. “Come ready to see architectural renderings of the newly anticipated cottages as well as where we are in the process with the expansion and the most up-to-date timeline and fundraising goals.”

According to Wilson, Mt. Hope provides more than $1 million in charitable care every year thanks in part to community support. “For the most part, Mt. Hope is supported by Medicaid state assistance,” she explained. “A large, ever-growing gap exists in what the state reimburses long-term care facilities and the actual cost of nursing care, and about $200 helps bridge the gap for one resident for one day of nursing care. Raising funds to assist in helping residents who are not able to afford the cost

of their care or benevolent care continues to be an increasing challenge.”

To reserve individual, couple or group seating at the banquet, individuals may contact Wilson at 717-682-8026 or email advancement@mthopenaz arene.org. There is an opportunity to be an event or table sponsor, reserving six seats per table for a set donation. The benefit meal is free; however, attendees at the banquet will have an opportunity to financially support the ongoing work of Mt. Hope, and there is a suggested donation to support the cost of the banquet. The deadline for

banquet reservations is Saturday, Sept. 14.

Dam Bridge Challenge will support Riverkeeper Association

You can help to ensure the quality of the water in the Susquehanna River by getting out on the river during the sixth annual Dam Bridge Challenge. The fundraiser to benefit the Lower Susquehanna Riverkeeper Association will be

Pioneer Clubs Kick-Off

held on Saturday, Sept. 21, beginning and ending at the Lock 2 Recreation Area, 2140 Fishing Creek Road, Wrightsville.

Participants are invited to compete in three paddle races - a 10-mile route, a 3-mile course or a quarter-mile kids’ race - or enjoy a 1-mile recreational paddle during the event, which will begin with registration at 7:30 a.m. before the first boats hit the water at 9 a.m.

“Typically for the Challenge, we get a wide array of boats out on the water, from surfskis, which are very fast kayaks, to outrigger canoes, stand-up paddleboards, kayaks and recreational canoes,” said Ted Evgeniadis, executive director of the Lower Susquehanna Riverkeeper Association. Participants should bring their own boats, although there is equipment available for rent for people who need it.

The event gets its name from the 10-mile race, which pits participants against each other either up river or down river, Evgeniadis shared.

When the race started six years ago, the Riverkeeper Association’s office was located at Shank’s Mare Outfitters along the river.

An employee who is an avid stand-up paddleboarder and kayaker had the idea for the challenge race because of the organization’s location.

“It’s 5 miles from there to the Safe Harbor Dam, and it’s 5 miles to the Route 462 bridge that connects Wrightsville to Columbia,” Evgeniadis explained. “On the day of the event, the direction is chosen, and the registrants don’t know which way it will be - either to the dam and back or to the bridge and back.”

Prizes will be awarded for the top three male and

female winners in a variety of age groups, and all participants will receive a reusable tote swag bag filled with freebies.

Live music and refreshments will be featured at the race’s conclusion.

Proceeds from the event will benefit the Lower Susquehanna Riverkeeper Association. Founded in 2006, the organization works to promote clean water.

“We advocate against pollution and we educate the public through programming,” Evgeniadis said. “We have a lot of citizen science programming on monitoring for bacteria, microplastics, general water quality and more.” The group host cleanup events, advocates for research, funds scientific studies and works to ensure there is fishable, swimmable and drinkable water in the Lower Susquehanna River watershed.

UNDERSTANDING

SALE

“There’s a lot of great organizations that support the area around the Chesapeake Bay watershed,” Evgeniadis said. “This one supports work that is crucial to keep our drinking water safe, to make sure the water people recreate in is safe.”

He encourages anyone who is interested to join the challenge, noting that the event puts a premium on safety.

“Don’t be scared to get out on the water,” he said. “This event is on the Susquehanna, but it’s being held on Lake Clarke, which is a reservoir formed behind Safe Harbor dam, so the water is super flat with little to no current. It’s on the river, but it’s

like paddling on a lake.”

Organizers will also station safety boats throughout the length of the race, ready to relieve tired boaters or help with any emergencies.

“We encourage everyone to come and experience the Susquehanna River, to get out on it,” Evgeniadis commented. “When you come to the Dam Bridge Challenge, you’re enjoying

a time to come together and celebrate our successes while supporting a really great cause and an organization with an important mission.”

Flu vaccinations available

The Giant Company has announced that flu vaccinations are now available at all Giant and Martin’s in-store pharmacies.

Flu shots for the 2024-25 flu and cold season are all trivalent and intended to protect against three strains of influenza: H1N1, H3N2 and a B/Victoria lineage virus. Giant and Martin’s pharmacies carry several different types of flu shots for children, adults and seniors, including standard and high-dose products.

Most insurance plans cover flu shots with $0 copays, including Medicare Part B. Flu shots are administered by immunizing Giant and Martin’s pharmacists and specially trained pharmacy team members, subject to state regulations.

Walk-ins are welcome, but customers can also make an appointment if they prefer. In addition, starting on Friday, Aug. 30,

customers who present their Giant or Martin’s card and receive a flu shot can get an offer for $5 off $25 of a future grocery order.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that everyone age 6 months and older get a flu vaccination. While the CDC recommends flu shots by the end of October for everyone 6 months and older, certain groups of people are at greater risk for complications from the flu. These groups include people with diabetes, pregnant women, adults over age 65, children under age 5, those with asthma and other chronic lung diseases, those with kidney and liver disorders, heart disease patients and those with compromised immune systems.

To find the nearest Giant or Martin’s pharmacy, visit www.giantfood stores.com or www.martinsfoods .com or download the free Giant or Martin’s pharmacy app.

Fulton Bank receives Freedom Award

The Department of Defense recently announced that Fulton Bank of Lancaster was one of 15 recipients of the 2024 Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award, which is the highest U.S. government honor to employers for support of National Guard and Reserve employees.

The recipients include small and large private and public sector employers nominated by a National Guard or Reserve Component Service member employed in the organization.

Fulton was nominated for the award by Brett Gagnon, chief enterprise architect for the bank and a colonel in the Pennsylvania Army National Guard. Prior to receiving the Employer Support Freedom Award, Fulton Bank received Above and Beyond Awards from the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR)

Webinar to focus on feral hogs

Penn State Extension will hold a webinar, “A Squeal for Help: Preventing Feral Hog Invasions,” on Wednesday, Sept. 4, at noon. Feral hogs are one of the most damaging non-native species in North America. Historically confined to the Southeastern United States, they have spread and now threaten forests, wetlands, and other habitats from Florida to Saskatchewan. In the webinar, participants will learn about the role humans play in feral hog invasions, strategies to slow their spread, and early

intervention steps for new invasions. The program is designed for foresters, landowners, biologists, and other interested parties. There is a fee for those seeking continuing education credits, with no free for all

for three consecutive years.

The Freedom Award began in 1996 under the auspices of ESGR to recognize exceptional employer support, with 355 honorees to date.

This year, ESGR received 1,758 nominations for employers throughout the 50 states, GuamCNMI, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and the District of Columbia. The recipients distinguished themselves by going far beyond the requirements of the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA) to support their National Guard and Reserve employees.
