Brittany’s Hope Sets Social Distance 5K By Francine Fulton

In lieu of its annual Walk of Love Cross Country 5K, Brittany’s Hope, a nonprofit organization that helps orphaned children around the world, will instead hold the Brittany’s Hope Social Distance 5K on Saturday, Sept. 19, at The Barn at Stone Gables in Elizabethtown.

The change, which was made due to the coronavirus pandemic, will adhere to all CDC social distancing and safety guidelines, while also raising money for the charity. The race will have a time trial type setup that will allow runners to start individually or in small groups of associated participants such as family members or people who live together. Designated start times will begin at 7:30 a.m. and run through 10:30 a.m. Participants will be able to run safely in a chip-timed, timesegmented race. “Basically, it will be a rolling start,” explained Mai-Lynn Sahd, executive director. “A runner will make a reservation online for a time to begin.” She noted that runners must stay in their cars until 10 minutes before they race. Runners will be able to pick up their bibs containing the timing chip at the starting line not more than five minutes before their start time. The 5K course will be a cross-country style that includes paved trails and trails through the woods. The course, which will be clearly marked, is a different course from past years. Additionally, runners will have on-course passing restrictions. Upon completing their run and crossing the finish line, participants must return to their vehicles. See Brittany s Hope pg 4

Runners will have to keep socially distanced during the Brittany’s Hope 5K on Sept. 19 at The Barn at Stone Gables.

Lisa Alcala is passionate about dispelling the stigma that is sometimes attached to mental health, especially among young people. “A thing I really feel is important is educating children in school that mental health is a medical issue,” said Lisa. “(Having a mental health issue) doesn’t mean you’re different. It just means you have something that needs to be treated.” Lisa, who owns The Shack Restaurant & Mini Golf, 662 S. Oak St., Manheim, with her husband, Ray, believes that treatment for a mental health issue should not be viewed any differently than needing vision correction. “If you have an eye problem, you go to the doctor to get glasses,” she said. “I think kids need to hear that (connection) a lot. It makes it real.”

Back in February, Lisa contacted Mental Health America of Lancaster County (MHALC) to see how she could help promote an enhanced understanding of mental health in children and See Mini Golf pg 5

With unemployment in the double digits nationally and with limits on how much socialization can be done in person, starting a blog might seem like an ideal solution. Bloggers can earn an income while interacting with people outside their own households from the safety of their homes. However, there is more to becoming a successful blogger than just opening a WordPress account. It is easy to start a blog, but it can be challenging to keep it going. “I stay motivated because I picked a topic that is just our life. It’s something that I’m very interested in,” said Ephrata resident Kathy McClure, who launched the Frugal Lancaster blog in 2010. “Don’t start a blog on something new to you. Choose something that you’re already doing and interested in.” See Blogging pg 4

Sahd emphasized that the race will have a cap of 300 participants. “We are confident that we can do it in a safe manner,” she noted. Because of health and safety precautions, there will be no games, activities, lunch or fun walk this year. “On a typical year, we attracted close to 400 runners. It’s a big event,” said Sahd. “Close to 1,000 people came because in the past we had activities and games, a petting zoo and lunch and people picnicked there. It was an event that was highly anticipated by the community.” People can also participate in a virtual fun walk that weekend. “Whether walking 1 or 2 miles, we encourage families to get out and walk, run or bike together the weekend of Sept. 19,” Sahd said. People may complete the distance anytime between Friday, Sept. 18, and Sunday, Sept. 20, and submit their time, activity and picture. Proceeds from race and virtual fun walk registration fees will directly benefit Brittany’s Hope, which was founded in 1999 as part of an effort to facilitate adoptions of special needs children from around the world by issuing adoption grants to assist families with the costs associated with international adoptions. In

addition to issuing grants, the organization provides humanitarian relief efforts, including food and health care, to benefit the children who remain in orphanages worldwide. “This race is to raise money to fund the programs,” Sahd said. “It is also a day of coming together for adoptees and families who have adopted and to remember those kids who are still in need of families. (We want) to celebrate them, uplift them and advocate for them.” The social distance 5K event will be held rain or shine. “The funds are important, but having people doing something they enjoy will be fun,” Sahd added. “With many things that have been canceled, at least we have one thing that is going on and we are excited.” The Barn at Stone Gables is located at 1 Hollinger Lane, Star Barn Way, Elizabethtown. Details and registration are available at w w w. b r i t t a n y s h o p e . o r g / fundraisers or by searching for “Brittany’s Hope 5K Social Distance Race 2020” on Facebook. McClure began blogging as a way to share with others how she and her husband saved money while raising children. Initially, the blog focused on how to use coupons effectively. It also featured a part-discount, part-referral deal program, and McClure estimated that her family saved more than $1,000 on dining and entertainment thanks to the program that first year. As the family grew and ways to save money changed from coupons to gas points, the blog also shifted. “I just share about things I use and do myself,” McClure said. “Most of the time, it’s just, we’re living life, and I share it.” During the last few months, McClure has seen people starting blogs on current hot topics such as homesteading and homeschooling. “Look at your gifts and your interests. Look at what people are asking you about and go from there. Be creative. Try it and see what works. Some people start channels for their pets,” she said. “If it brings you joy, (consider it for a blog). We’re in a time where we need things that bring us joy.” There are multiple ways to earn an income through a blog. Traditionally, these have included advertisements placed on a page as well as sponsored posts in which businesses pay bloggers to write about products or events. Now, there are services like Patreon through which bloggers may offer special access to posts on Instagram or subscriptions so readers will not see ads on their blogs. Running an Instagram account, along with having an active Facebook page or group, has become crucial for earning an income from blogging. McClure spends as much time on Facebook and Instagram posts as she does on blog posts, and she uses her blog as a content resource center where she creates posts that she shares on social media. “I think I’ve become more of an influencer

than a blogger,” she said. “It’s a lot of Instagram stories and posts that people connect with.” Posting to social media is relatively simple because images, not text, are the focus, but McClure expressed a bias toward having a blog as a backup. “If Instagram goes down, you still have all your stuff (on your blog),” she explained. “The email list (of your subscribers) is yours.” Internet trolls - people who post comments designed to cause upset or derail conversations - are an unfortunate reality of the blogosphere. The majority of feedback on McClure’s posts has been positive, but when the occasional troll pops up, McClure simply deletes the comment. Other times she allows the comment to remain but does not respond, and yet other times she engages. Each instance has to be handled on a case-by-case basis, she noted. When McClure began blogging in 2010, she used her degree in new media technology from Rochester Institute of Technology to build her own website. Now, there are many services available to help bloggers manage their posts. In addition to WordPress, McClure listed Buffer and Later for scheduling Facebook and Instagram posts, respectively; MailerLite and ConvertKit for email marketing; E-junkie for file downloads; and Tailwind for managing Pinterest. McClure also recommended connecting with other bloggers and is herself a member of a Facebook group for Lancaster County bloggers. Thanks to work she put into the blog in the early years when her children were little, McClure now needs to spend only about five hours a week on it. Ultimately, patience, persistence, and dedication are key to running a successful blog. “Don’t expect the money right away,” McClure advised. “You’re doing it to share whatever you know, your knowledge. You’re doing it to connect with people.”

All funds raised by the tournament, which can accommodate a total of 76 players, will go to MHALC to help promote mental health through advocacy, education, and support. Golfers may check in for the tournament at 9:30 a.m. that day. The tournament will start at 10 a.m. A heavy rain date has been set for Saturday, Sept. 26. According to Lisa, the 19-hole course has been called “the most challenging course in Lancaster County.” “The best score here has been a 58,” she said, noting that most people score in the 80s. The tournament will be in a scramble format with a shotgun start. “A shotgun start is when everybody is assigned a hole, and they all start at the same time,” said Lisa. “(Players) keep their ball and finish all the holes.” She also explained that in a scramble,

Flu Shots Available At Giant, Martin’s The Giant Company announced that flu vaccinations are now available at all 132 Giant and Martin’s Food Markets in-store pharmacies. New this flu season, Giant and Martin’s pharmacists will also offer drive-up flu vaccinations in select store parking lots from Sunday, Sept. 13, through Saturday, Oct. 17. Patients may pull into a spot in a designated area of the store parking lot and be vaccinated without leaving their car. For customers who cannot be safely vaccinated from inside their vehicle or for walkup customers, seating will be available. Social distancing measures will be in place if more than one patient is being served. Store locations offering drive-up flu vaccinations, as well as the dates and times, are available at www.giant foodstores.com/flushot or www.martinsfoods.com/flushot. In addition to the drive-up flu vaccinations, customers can visit any in-store pharmacy to receive their vaccination now. Giant and Martin’s pharmacies offer several types of flu shots

for children, adults and seniors. Most insurance plans cover flu shots at $0 copays, including Medicare Part B. Flu shots are administered by immunizing Giant and Martin’s pharmacists, subject to state regulations. No appointment is needed for the in-store and drive-up vaccinations. To find the nearest Giant or Martin’s pharmacy, readers may visit www.giantfoodstores.com or www.martinsfoods.com or download the free Giant or Martin’s Pharmacy app. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that everyone six months and older get a flu vaccination. While the CDC recommends flu shots for everyone over six months, certain groups of people are at greater risk for complications from the flu. These groups include people with diabetes, pregnant women, adults over 65, children under 5, those with asthma and other chronic lung diseases, those with kidney and liver disorders, heart disease patients and those with compromised immune systems.

Prizes will include trophies and cash for the top three players and a closestto-the-hole prize. “We will pick a hole and someone will be out there to measure who is closest on the first shot,” Lisa said. There will also be door prizes and opportunities to purchase meal packages ahead of the tournament day. Some of the sponsors for the tournament include Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc.; Kegel’s Produce; Cain’s Lanes; Border Magic of Lancaster; Kinetics of Windstream; and Kreider Farms. In addition, Kreider Farms has donated mugs, shirts, and hats, and Cain’s Lanes has donated bowling games for door prizes. “If anyone from the community has door prizes to donate, they can reach out (to us),” said Lisa. Lisa noted that she has always

Stephanie Randolph

The first-time event will feature breakfast and talks by guest speaker Stephanie Randolph. Lunch will be provided. According to conference organizers, the goal of the event is for ladies to come together for a day of fellowship and spiritual refreshing. The theme of the conference, “Strength and Dignity,” comes from Proverbs 31:25, which states, “Strength and dignity are her clothing and her position is strong and secure; and she smiles at the future (knowing that she and her family are prepared).” “That verse is the heart of the conference. It speaks about women using the words ‘strength’ and ‘dignity,’” said pastor Aaron McNatt. “We’ve never (hosted a women’s conference) before, but I think the women in our church are excited about it. anticipation for it.” The Ladies Conference will open at 9:30 a.m. with breakfast in the church café area. Attendees are asked to bring a covered breakfast dish to share. Randolph will present Session 1 at 10:30 a.m., followed by lunch at noon. Session 2 will begin at 1:30 p.m. The speaker sessions will be held in the church sanctuary. “They will follow the same protocols we follow on Sunday,” McNatt noted. “Seating will be spaced out and masks are suggested.” Randolph has served in a variety of ministry areas, working with people of various ages and ethnic groups in Christian schools and churches for the past 27 years. Currently serving at New Life Assembly of God in Lancaster, Randolph leads ROOTED, the fifth- and sixth-grade ministry; directs the youth drama team; and works in the church office as the executive assistant. Randolph and her husband, Tom, have one daughter, Mikayla, 16, whom they adopted from China 15 years ago. McNatt noted that the guest speaker was recommended by the church’s women’s ministry, directed by Ginger Yeagle. The women’s ministry takes part in Bible study and fellowship activities and helps with practical needs of church members such as providing meals to parishioners in need. To register for the conference, readers may visit www.wrightsvillechurch.com /conference. More information is also available by searching for the event page, “Strength & Dignity: One Day Ladies Conference,” on Facebook. In addition to the ladies conference, the church will host a church leaders’ conference titled “The Change Conference” on Tuesday, Sept. 15, from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The virtual conference will be geared toward ministers and church leaders. “Last year was our first year, and we had the conference in Irwin, near Pittsburgh,” said McNatt, who is a coach with The Change Group, an organization that provides leadership programs for pastors attempting to revitalize their churches. “It was single event at a single location. This year, we will be across eight states with regional hosts, (including Wrightsville Assembly of God).” The conference will feature speakers from throughout the United States, including Annie F. Downs, internationally known speaker, author and podcast host. “I would encourage people to tell their pastors about it and tell their leaders about it,” McNatt said. “(They) can come over and enjoy some great conversation and hear from great leaders across the nation. They will speak specifically to this audience.” A fee will be charged to attend the conference. Senior Center To Open

Ethiopian Takeout Meal Set For Sept. 12 “Practice makes perfect, so the saying goes, and it is proving true in the fundraising meals hosted by Siloam Ethiopia in Landisville. Prior to the shutdown in March, the organization co-founded by nurse Wegayhu Ketema and her husband, Ethiopian Evangelical Church in Lancaster (EECL) pastor Demeke Getahun, held quarterly buffet dinners. When indoor dining was discouraged by state guidelines, the buffets became takeouts. “Takeout style is very good, Getahun commented after Siloam Ethiopia’s second fundraiser in the new format. He noted that one of the benefits is that customers can enjoy Ethiopian food for more than one meal. “It’s also easier for us, he added. “It saves our time: We don’t have to set up or clean up (a dining room). Getahun and Ketema have continued to perfect the process for the takeout meals. At the meal on Aug. 1, customers pulled up to EECL, 175 Church St., Landisville, and were handed preassembled bags of containers with doro wat, the signature chicken-and-hardboiled-egg dish of Ethiopia; spicy lentils; split peas; atikilt wat, a mixture of onions, cabbage, and carrots; and injera, a sourdough-type flatbread. At the next meal, which will be held on Saturday, Sept. 12, from 1 to 5 p.m., customers will be able to choose which plant-based dish they would like to accompany their doro wat and

injera. The change was made in response to customer feedback. Donations will be accepted for the meal, and proceeds will be used to purchase a blood chemistry machine for use in the free medical clinic that Siloam Ethiopia established and operates in Ketema’s hometown of Harar, Ethiopia. Thanks to a previous fundraising meal, Siloam Ethiopia previously purchased a complete blood count machine. Having these two devices at the clinic will enable bloodwork to be performed on-site. “Because we don’t have it, our patients have to go to other places, but they don’t have money to do it, Getahun explained. The free clinic serves the poorest people in Harar, providing medical care for homeless and elderly populations, as well as individuals who live in the area. Based on the results of bloodwork, the medical staff will refer clients to the hospital or order medicine so they do not have to spend money they might not have on a trip into the city. Getahun noted that right now, due to COVID-19, the hospital is accepting only the most serious of cases. The medical clinic is trying to pick up the slack. “Siloam Ethiopia is giving service more efficiently now, Getahun said. “The clinic is jammed. They help a lot of people. The clinic is also providing some food support for elderly clients. Ketema has picked up extra shifts at a Hershey rehab hospital in order to send money to the clinic to buy food. “(The

elderly individuals) don’t have anything, Getahun said. “Expenses have doubled since before COVID. The medical staff members at the clinic have been providing COVID-19 awareness and safety training to clinic clients and community members. Ketema has been collecting personal protective equipment (PPE) to send to Harar for use at the clinic and in the community. She plans to soon send a shipment, which will include 10 donated wheelchairs. “People are sending us masks. We are really blessed, Getahun commented, adding that hospitals in York and Baltimore have donated PPE upon Ketema’s request. Siloam Ethiopia had established satellite clinics in schools

around Harar, but they closed when the school year ended. When students return to class, the clinics will resume operation. The organization also plans to dig a well at a school that has no access to running water. At a previous fundraising meal, a supporter dropped off a $5,000 check for the project. “I am amazed at how God is working. It’s just blowing my mind, Getahun remarked. For more information about Siloam Ethiopia, readers may visit www.siloamethio.org. Orders placed in advance for the Sept. 12 meal are appreciated but not required. Individuals may email siloamethio@gmail.com or call Getahun at 717-874-8510 to indicate their meal preferences.

The public programs offered by Lancaster County Parks are scheduled to resume in September. For the safety of participants and staff, programs have been carefully planned to comply with current CDC and Pennsylvania Department of Health mitigation

United States. The chorale tied for second place in the Community Chorus division of the competition. Linda L. Tedford founded the Susquehanna Chorale in 1981 and continues to serve as its conductor and artistic director. Singers are chosen by audition for the 40-member volunteer ensemble, which strives for a precision blend of voices, professional-quality performances, and a strong personal connection with audience members. Thousands of qualified contestants from all 50 states have entered the American Prize competition since its founding in 2009. Performance entries are accepted from both community and professional groups. Entrants range

from well-known artists to lesser known ones and come from communities both large and small. Entries are judged on overall artistic quality, musicality, rhythmic incisiveness, ensemble, tone quality, accuracy, intonation and knowledge of style. The chorale was awarded the Community Chorus prize based on select pieces from its professional recordings “Sing Me to Heaven” and “Roots and Wings.” The chorale received additional consideration for the American Prize in 2015. The chorale is funded in part by the Cultural Enrichment Fund, the capital region’s united arts fund, and the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts.
