GMTRC is serious about horsing around

For humans, interaction and physical contact with some animals can be soothing, intriguing or even therapeutic. Count horses among that group of special animals.

The healing power of horses is the premise upon which Greystone Manor Therapeutic Riding Center (GMTRC) is founded.

“There is a unique bond that can be found with a horse,” said Stephanie Fleck, GMTRC’s program director. “Science is starting to catch up and find out what horsemen have known for centuries. (Horses’) ability to read body language is higher than any other therapeutic animal. Horses can feel a human heartbeat from 4 feet away.”

“When you enter into a barn, you’re entering into that relationship,” continued Fleck. “If you come in with all this baggage, they pick up on that. That’s why equine therapy is so beneficial. You can’t lie to a horse.”

Located on 30 acres at 1063 Hartman Station Road, Lancaster, GMTRC uses equine therapy to help at-risk individuals - folks with mental and physical disabilities, people with autism, veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder, inactive seniors, even some without a formal diagnosis. Through its lessons, programs and activities, GMTRC works with people from ages 4 to 80, both in one-on-one and in group settings. More than 200 people are served each year.

horses. They’re providing the services,” said Fleck. “A lot of people have heard of us, but they really don’t know what we do. If people come out, we find that they fall in love with it. We serve a broad scope of our community. Everybody knows someone who can benefit from our services.”

Supported by a pool of 150 volunteers, GMTRC employs 10 staff members, three of whom are full time. GMTRC staff members are trained, but they are not licensed therapists or counselors.

“We have a large demand for services,” said Fleck. “Our services are provided by trained and certified staff, but we are not licensed therapists. We work on horsemanship goals. Therapists would work on clinical goals. There is a distinction there.”

Financed through donations, fundraising and grants, GMTRC began as Lancaster County Therapy Riding with seven students in 1981. In the beginning, the organization was operated entirely by volunteers.

“We’ve grown and grown over the years, and we’ve been able to add paid staff,” said Fleck. “We’re kind of

poised for another growth period. We’re working hard to expand our services. Currently, our wait list is way too long. We’re looking at how to meet the needs of the community.”

For additional information about Greystone Manor Therapeutic Riding Center, go to www.grey stonemanortrc.org.

“There’s no way to replicate the movement of a horse, and it’s very beneficial and very therapeutic,” said Fleck. “People find the movement of a horse to be very calming. Our students may be able to connect with their equine partners in ways they can’t with human relationships. It’s having fun with your horse. It helps progress them in their everyday lives.”

GMTRC is home to 10 horses. Its facilities include an indoor riding arena, an outdoor riding arena and spaces to ride in nature. But some individuals also benefit from simply taking care of the horses.

“We love and rely on our

the program provides an opportunity for children to hear the Word of God during their lunch period.

“The children are released from class, pick up their lunch in the cafeteria or pack a lunch and then are bused from their school to our program location,” she said. “The children enjoy their lunch while also singing, learning about the Bible - second grade Old Testament, third grade New Testament - and doing a fun craft or activity. They are then bused back to school. The children are with us for one hour, which includes the transportation time to and from school.”

Donegal has been hosting a Bible2School program since January of 2022, when it was offered only to second-graders. A third-grade class was added in January of 2023, and this school year, a fourth-grade class is planned for January 2025. The second- and third-grade classes meet on Thursdays. A day of the week for the fourth-grade program is still being determined.

Learn To Square Dance

A program like Bible2School fills an important role, Adams said. “(It) provides us with a wonderful opportunity to teach children and families in our school district,” she shared. “Having the program during the school day allows children who can’t attend after-school programs to still have the opportunity to learn about the love of Jesus.”

It also offers a chance for children who may not regularly attend church to learn more about the Bible.

“Bible2School allows children to step away from the busy school day for one hour each week to enjoy crafts, songs, special time with friends, interactive lessons and learning about how much God loves you,” Adams said. “The registration process is quick and easy, and the program does not cost anything for the students and families. We have a wonderful group of volunteers who are enthusiastic about the love of Jesus and truly enjoy teaching and spending time with the children in the program. Added bonus - we

end each year with a pizza party.”

Along with the schoolyear programming, Bible2School will participate in Mount Joy’s annual Winterfest, scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 7, and will host an annual spring fundraiser at Rita’s Italian Ice & Frozen Custard in Mount Joy.

Bird club sets meeting

The Lancaster County Bird Club (LCBC) will meet on Thursday, Sept. 12, at 7 p.m. at the North Museum of Nature and Science, 400 College Ave., Lancaster. The program will be “Ears in the Sky: Using Drones to Study Songbirds,” presented by Andy Wilson of Gettysburg College and his undergraduate students. Uncrewed aircraft systems (UAS), or drones, have now been widely used in ecology and envi

ronmental monitoring for several years. Wilson’s research program with undergraduate students at Gettysburg College aims to develop methods for monitoring bird sounds by UAS. His research shows that drones can be a highly efficient way of counting songbirds and other vocal species, and they can be quickly deployed to places that are difficult to access.

emergency medical services still 75 years later,” he shared. “The Mastersonville Volunteer Fire Company has grown over the years from a small fire company with one engine - a 1935 Dodge purchased from Mount Joy Fire Department that was housed in a neighbor’s garage - to the first official fire house built in 1950 on land that was donated by the Hess family.”

The station serves Rapho and Mount Joy townships and surrounding areas. As the needs of the community grew, so did the fire house, Shields said, and the station added apparatus. The station served the community from 2166 Meadow View Road for almost 70 years before the decision was made to purchase land across the street for future use.

“In 2017, ground was broken for a new fire station to be built on that land. The current fire station has six large bays to house our apparatus,” Shields said, noting that the station houses engines, tankers, emergency medical services vehicles and more. “This building also has plenty of office space and a training room.”

Although the station has moved and grown over

the decades, one thing has remained constant.

“We are 100% volunteer from running the emergency calls - fires, accidents and medical services - to the day-to-day business administration tasks that make the fire company operate,” Shields said. “Everyone’s time is valuable. Giving up their time to do something for their community or someone having a worse day than them only appeals to very select few people nowadays. The interest and the time are not there for most people anymore. … We have been very fortunate in our community to have their support and to still gain enough volunteers to keep us operating.”

Shields said the station is always looking for new volunteers who want to serve their community, noting

A parent or guardian must participate in the pool with each child. This class is designed to help young children feel comfortable in and around the water. Both classes will be held at the Masonic Village Patton Pool, 1244 Bainbridge Road, Elizabethtown. Paint a Pillow will be offered at the Winters Heritage House, 47 E. High St., Elizabethtown. “The job does not reward you with money, but it rewards you with that good inside feeling knowing that you were there to help someone at their worst time of need,” he said.

He hopes the community will come out to mark the 75th anniversary and reflect on the impact the fire station has made over the years.

“On behalf of Mastersonville Volunteer Fire Company, a huge thank you to all the fire company members past and current and

themed class will be held on Monday, Sept. 16, from 7 to 9 p.m., and a holiday- and December-themed class will occur on Monday, Nov. 11, from 7 to 9 p.m. Barbara Plunkett will guide participants through painting a seasonal wreath image on a pillow cover. The pillow, pillow cover, and paint will be provided.

to all the community members and businesses who have dedicated their time, hard work, long hours and monetary support over the last 75-plus years to make the fire company what it is today,” he said. “Come enjoy an evening out with your neighbors, friends and your local first responders. “(She) has been a breath of fresh air with new visions for our church,” Rockey remarked. “She offers a very compassionate, welcoming environment to anyone who walks through our doors. She is excited to host more opportunities for people in our community

to feel welcomed here and encounter the life-changing power of Jesus here at Glossbrenner.”

The Rally Day service holds several purposes, Rockey said. “This is a kickoff to our kid and young adult ministry season. We host a variety of Sunday schools at our church for all ages,” she explained. “It’s a great place to connect with others, be able to ask the tough questions, share in our doubts and as always go to God’s Word for answers and encouragement together.”

It also offers an opportunity for members of the church to connect with the wider community.

“Children and young adults are very important

in our church family, and we want people in the community to know they can find support and love anytime they walk through our doors,” she shared. “Of course, it’s always great to get new church members, but we are more about spreading the light and love of Jesus into the community than filling the pews every Sunday.” Reservations for the spaghetti dinner are appreciated and may be made by contacting Rockey at jrockey@glossbrenner.net, but people are also welcome to just show up on the date. Fighting the good fight, 15 years later

In 2009, Lynda Charles organized a bake sale to raise money for her sisterin-law and her co-worker. The women had recently received diagnoses of breast cancer, and the treatments prevented them from receiving an income or insurance from working. The bake sale raised more than $9,000, and it prompted Lynda and her husband, David, to create Mountville-based nonprofit Help The Fight. Fifteen years later, the organization has raised more than $1.2 million dollars for breast cancer patients throughout Lancaster County.

Help The Fight will host its 15th annual fundraising banquet on Saturday, Oct. 5, at Spooky Nook Sports, 75 Champ Blvd., Manheim. The event will take place from 4:30 to 9:30 p.m., and it will include live and silent auctions, prize drawings and giveaways.

Only 500 tickets for the banquet will be sold, and the deadline for registration is Saturday, Sept. 14. Each table will seat a maximum

of eight guests. Registration forms are available online at www.helpthefight.org.

To receive a copy of the registration form via email, contact helpthefightnow@ gmail.com.

The banquet will include a buffet dinner and a benefit auction. Items available to bid on will include designer handbags, weekend getaways, artwork, jewelry, gift baskets, toys for children, furniture, gift cards from local restaurants and services for homes and families. Separate tickets may be purchased with cash to participate in various prize drawings held throughout

50plus EXPO set

The 28th annual Lancaster County 50plus EXPO (Fall) will return on Wednesday, Sept. 18, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Spooky Nook Sports, 2913 Spooky Nook Road, Manheim.

Co-hosted by OLP Events and the Lancaster County Office of Aging, the Expo will feature exhibitors providing up-to-date information for the lifestyle and needs of local residents age 50 and up, including travel, housing, medical services, leisure, home improvements, finances and health care. The 50plus Expo will also feature door prizes and free health screenings.

Onstage entertainment and seminars will include an interactive fitness demonstration, presentations on Medicare and estate planning and a performance by a national award-winning Elvis Presley tribute artist. AAA will have its Mobile Branch cargo van set up for help with many services, such as notary service, passport photos, and theme park tickets.

Lancaster School of Cosmetology will offer free mini manicures.

South Central Pennsylvania Medical Reserve Corps will offer flu shots on a first-come, first-served

Dailey. “The generosity of our supporters allows us to continue our mission to help people throughout the community in need.”

Although Help The Fight’s annual fundraiser has evolved to incorporate a banquet and auctions, the event always includes a bake sale to remember its humble origins. Lynda decided to make the first fundraiser a bake sale to enable local residents to support the cause regardless of their income levels.

vided by their employers, and breast cancer patients often lose their insurance while undergoing treatment because their treatment prevents them from working fulltime.

Help The Fight is always accepting volunteers to help with events and to raise awareness of its mission to support breast cancer patients. For more information about volunteer opportunities, contact the office or visit Help The Fight’s main location at 143 Oakridge Drive, Mountville.

the evening. A prize drawing for a cash reward will take place to celebrate the event’s 15th anniversary.

Every year, the items included in the banquet’s auctions are donated by various local businesses and individuals in the community. Anyone who wishes to donate items prior to the banquet may contact Help The Fight’s office via email or by calling 717-455-7095.

“We’re inviting members of the local community to join us as we celebrate 15 years and raising $1.2 million for cancer patients in Lancaster County,” said patient coordinator Susie

Admission and parking are free. A complimentary shuttle service will provide

“I think many people have rallied behind us because the money we raise stays in the community,” Dailey said.

“Our board of directors is also totally volunteer-driven, and everyone feels passionately about the cause.”

The funds raised from the annual banquet directly benefit breast cancer patients in the local community. Help The Fight provides Lancaster County residents with what the organization calls gap funding, which entails financial support to help recipients pay for household bills as well as medical expenses. Many Americans’ insurance benefits are pro-
