A Totally Tubular Trip Back To The ’80s Milanof-Schock Benefit Auction Set For Sept. 22 By Chelsea Peifer
Every year organizers brainstorm and vote on a theme for the MilanofSchock Library Benefit Auction, and this year they landed on co-chair Connie Hajioannou’s favorite decade: the ’80s. “I love the ’80s. We’re going to have music from the ’80s and a gigantic TV screen in the entryway so it’s like you’re entering the ’80s,” explained Hajioannou. Decor and giveaways to align with the totally gnarly, righteous, and radical decade are also planned. “Part of the mission of and vision of the library is connecting the dots between the library and community, so
we’ll have Pac-Man posters detailing how the library does this,” added co-chair Kim Beach. The 16th annual benefit auction will take place from 5:30 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 22, at The Gathering Place, 6 Pine St., Mount Joy. A served dinner will include entrée choices of beef medallions, chicken cordon bleu, or mushroom ravioli with brown butter sauce. Silent and live auctions will feature a selection of items and experiences including skydiving, beverage tastings, sporting event tickets, gift cards to area attractions and eateries, children’s bicycles, home décor, jewelry, and more. John Hess will once again volunteer his time to serve as auctioneer for the live auction, which will offer 50 items. Hajioannou noted that all of the items up for bids will be brand-new. gifts that honor loved ones and help others. In addition, fair-trade items and food will be available for purchase, and an educational presentation for children will be included. Lancaster Farm Sanctuary, founded by Jonina Turzi and Sarah Salluzzo, is a nonprofit micro-sanctuary created to advocate for farm animals. “We have a few acres, and we have a few ambassadors for each species,” explained Turzi. “We rescue animals, and we hold public events where humans can interact with the animals and hear their stories.” Turzi noted that the animals at the farm were rescued from abusive or neglectful situations, but they are not available for adoption. She listed two types of chickens, sheep, dairy cows, pygmy goats, a turkey, and several ducks that now live permanently at the sanctuary. More information about the organization may be found at www.lancaster farmsanctuary.org.

Brendan Stengle of Music for Everyone said that the organization has provided Lancaster with thousands of musical moments through its downtown piano program, but what is not as well known is how many grants have been given to local school districts in the dozen years Music for Everyone has existed. “Last year, we gave $112,000 in grants to 13 different school districts,” said Stengle. “As an organization, we have invested more than $1.6 million in direct support for instruments.” Stengle said that the organization is currently purchasing instruments in bulk to stretch its buying power. “Over the next five years, our goal is to repair every school-owned instrument in Lancaster County,” said Stengle. The story of Music for Everyone may be explored by visiting https://musicforeveryone.org. Gwen Didden, director of Faith Friendship Ministries in Mountville, said that the ministry cares for low-income individuals with mental health issues in a personal care facility based on the Nehemiah Homes model that offers interdependent living experiences. More information about the organization may be found at www.faithfriendship.org. Beth Horst, who founded The Edible Classroom with Grace Julian, said that they are excited to be working with local schools to create or maintain learning gardens. “We work to customize a program for the teachers, and everything is handson and experiential,” said Horst, who noted that summer programming is offered as well. “From seed to table, (the students) learn how to plant, tend, harvest, and eat the food they have grown,” said Horst. Information about can be found by visiting www.theedibleclassroom.org. GTGH founder Jenn Knepper noted that this year, the fair will be held close to Monday, Dec. 10, which is Human Rights Day. Human Rights Day was first celebrated in 1948, making 2018 the 70th anniversary of the first observance. “We will have a scavenger hunt for the children to find various declarations of the articles for human rights from among the nonprofits at the event,” said Knepper. Participants who complete the scavenger hunt will be eligible to receive a book about human rights. A staffed human rights display will offer information and provide interested parties with the opportunity to ask questions. Readers who would like to learn more about GTGH may visit www.giftsthatgive hope.org/lancaster or search for “Gifts That Give Hope: Lancaster’s Alternative Gift Fair” on Facebook.

DONEGAL EDITION
MERCHANDISER - Donegal Edition -
Youth Choir from pg 1 The Chamber Choir of the Mennonite Children’s Choir of Lancaster (MCCL) recently participated in a GO! Summer mission assignment with Eastern Mennonite Missions (EMM). The 29 participating students visited Indonesia from June 26 to July 14. The choir, directed by Rosemary Blessing, performed in four airports, multiple museums, several Mennonite churches, two cultural festivals also featuring Muslim and Buddhist performances, a rice field, the tip of a volcano, two Islamic boarding schools, a palace, and one mosque. At some of the venues, the students were able to have faith conversations with Muslims. The trip challenged participants to widen their worldviews. These interfaith experiences were organized by the director of the Indonesian Mennonite Diakonal Service, Paulus Hartono, who has worked with peacemaking and Christian-Muslim relations in his city of Solo and throughout the country for the past 20 years. Following his experience with the Chamber Choir, Hartono posted a video on Facebook proposing three languages for peace: smiles, singing, and taking pictures. The trip occurred in the wake of five bombings in the Indonesian city of Surabaya in May. Three churches were among the targets of the attacks. After intensive security analyses, EMM, its Indonesian partners, and MCCL determined that the risk level for the
choir was low. Families of choir members were able to make the final decision on whether to allow their children to participate in the trip. Nearly all of the families decided to continue with the trip as planned. Choir members used the entire year to prepare for their third international trip with EMM’s GO! Summer program, a short-term mission exposure opportunity offered during the summer. Both local and global opportunities are available. Previous international trips included locations such as Germany, Albania, and Bulgaria. The choir’s preparation included learning several Indonesian songs and visiting the Philadelphia Indonesian Mennonite Church. Multiple fundraisers were held, including a dinner featuring authentic Indonesian cuisine. Participants were required to go
through a slightly abbreviated version of the EMM application process that other short-term applicants undergo. Much like EMM’s other global workers, participants experienced discipleship, culture, and language training in preparation for the trip. The choir’s mission is to train children and youths to glorify Jesus Christ through excellent choral singing. MCCL’s five different groups - one of which is the Chamber Choir - have a total of approximately 170 members representing 75 congregations from 17 denominations. A program of Lancaster Mennonite School, MCCL also includes students from 53 schools, as well as homeschooled students. Pictured on front: Chamber Choir members (from left) Ella Brubaker, Rebecca Sauder, Kira Denlinger, Daniel Lantz, and Adin Martin enjoy the view at the top of Mount Bromo.

The lecture portion of the event will take place from 7:15 to 9:15 p.m. at the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster. Members of the public may also attend an optional VIP dinner and reception beginning at 5 p.m. at Carr’s Restaurant, 50 W. Grant St., Lancaster. Before serving as secretary, Castro was mayor of San Antonio, Texas. During his tenure, he became known as a national leader in urban development. In March 2010, Castro was named to the World Economic Forum’s list of Young Global Leaders. Later that year, Time Magazine placed him on its 40 Under 40 list of rising stars in American politics. Previously, Castro served as a member of the San Antonio City Council and was known for becoming
San Antonio’s youngest councilman in 2001. He also became the first Hispanic person to deliver a keynote address at the Democratic National Convention in 2012. Separate prices have been set for the lecture only and for the reception, dinner, and lecture. Seating is limited for the lecture. The VIP experience is limited to 75 attendees and will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. All proceeds from the ticket sales will support the programs and services provided by CHI St. Joseph Children’s Health throughout the Lancaster community. To purchase tickets, readers may visit http://chistjosephchildrenshealth. eventbrite.com or call 717-397-7625.
