BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Head out to Calvary Bible Church in Mount Joy for a three-on-three men’s basketball tournament on Saturday, Sept. 16. The event will begin at 9 a.m. on the basketball courts at the church, 629 Union School Road.
The tournament is open to men age 16 and up, and entry is free. A minimum of three players per team is required to sign up. Teams will be randomly paired up in the double-elimination tournament, and trophies will be awarded to the top three teams. The games will follow traditional three-on-three
Rally Day will feature family fun
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Comedy, juggling, magic and a little bit of circus performing will all come together when Boston Bachert entertains at Glossbrenner United Methodist Church. He’ll headline a familyfriendly Rally Day celebration on Sunday, Sept. 17, beginning at 10 a.m. at the church, 713 Church St., Mount Joy.
“The purpose of this event is to connect with younger families in the community and bridge the age gap between older folks in our community with exciting entertainment for all ages and an inspiring message of hope,” said Jessica Rockey, children and youth director.
Last year, the church hosted local entertainer Chris Ivey, and the feedback was so positive, organizers decided to host a similar event this year. A friend of Rockey’s saw Bachert perform at her local church, and she
recommended the entertainer for Glossbrenner’s Rally Day celebration. Bachert is a Christian variety entertainer whose performances combine on-stage showmanship with

audience participation. Diagnosed with Tourette syndrome and auditory processing issues when he was 7 years old, Bachert uses his personal story to showcase God’s grace. “I share how I chose to trust God with my struggles in life, and through this, He’s shown me how Tourette’s doesn’t hold me back,” Bachert stated. “It actually helps me be the performer I am today.” He especially enjoys having a platform to help
others and share Christ’s love for everybody, he said.
After the performance, the church will host a free spaghetti luncheon. “We even offer a gluten-free option for those that need it,” Rockey said. “We like everyone to feel included and have something they can enjoy at our meals.”
Hosting events like Bachert’s performance help Glossbrenner members spread their message of God’s love, Rockey remarked. “We want to get our name out there to the community to let them know they are welcome here at Glossbrenner and it is a church for all ages to connect,” she said. “It is always good to get out of the house and enjoy something new together as a family and make memories. All ages and all backgrounds are welcome here for this event and for every church service we have. All are welcome in God’s house.”

rules and regulations, including half-court play and no three-point baskets. PIAA referees will be available for each game.
The tournament began a few years ago when church member Bill Osborne was inspired by a similar community basketball tournament he experienced when he lived in Michigan. He thought about hosting a tournament at Calvary Bible Church for several years before organizing the first one in 2021. This year’s tournament is sponsored by The King’s Men ministry at the church. Osborne is the chairman of the group.
Honored for her heart
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Stacy Emminger is passionate about helping others. The executive director of Donegal Substance Abuse Alliance (DSAA) works tirelessly to find resources and provide programming to support people affected by substance use. Now she’s being recognized for her efforts.
Emminger will be presented with the Catherine Caron “Heart of the Family” Award at the 25th annual Central Pennsylvania Community Awards Breakfast on Wednesday, Sept. 27. Hosted by Caron, an organization focused on managing and treating substance use disorder, the
event pays tribute to people and organizations that have made a contribution in the ongoing battle against alcohol and drug addiction. Emminger was familiar with Caron and knew about the awards, but she didn’t give it much thought until she received an email saying she had won. It turned out her employee Beth Brandt had nominated Emminger for the honor. The “Heart of the Family” Award is named in honor of Catherine Caron, who opened her home to people in need and is the founder of Caron’s Family Education Program. The award recognizes caregivers for the dignity, respect and support

JOSEPH D.LOPETT
Joseph (Joe) Dennis Lopett, 72, passed away on Friday, June 9, 2023, at Duke University Hospital in Durham, NC. Born in New Kensington, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late Joseph Lopett and Veronica Pitlock Lopett.
Joe grew up in the Pittsburgh area where he graduated from Leechburg HS and earned the rank of Eagle Scout as the youngest in PA at that time. He graduated from Penn State University in 1972 with a bachelor’s degree in Comprehensive Social Studies and a teaching certificate. Joe was an avid fan of all Pittsburgh sports teams, namely the Steelers, and the history of the team and the association.
Joe was known for his Unique sense of humor and was so very proud of his Polish roots. In Mount Joy, PA, Joe was a volunteer softball coach for several years for the MJAA, and was an active, encouraging sports parent and grandparent.
He had a love of old western movies, along with any and all historic events which he could not get enough of. Joe also loved animals but namely the two most important were his dogs Chewy and Beau.
Themed baskets, like the one shown here by resident Glenn Welsh, will be part of an auction event to benefit Mt. Hope Nazarene Retirement Community.
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
“Mt. Hope gives over $1 million in charitable care every year, a feat made possible by the great amount of support from our local community,” said Kris Wilson, director of advancement for Mt. Hope Nazarene Retirement Community.
You can help support that mission by attending a Fall Benefit Banquet. The event will be held on Saturday, Sept. 23, at Manheim Brethren in Christ Church, 54 N. Penryn Road, Manheim. Doors will open at 5 p.m., and a catered meal will be served at 5:30 p.m.
The menu will feature homemade oven-baked baconwrapped pork loin stuffed with savory apple sausage, pork gravy, gourmet cheese potatoes, sweet and sour saucy green beans, tossed salad, homemade soft dinner rolls with butter, desserts and drinks.
Following the free meal, an inspirational program will take place with guest speakers, personal sharing and music. Silent and live auctions of themed baskets will include homemade pies, cakes and breads; donated items from local businesses and individuals such as Koser Jewelers;
Joe’s career path was one like no other, starting out in the coal mines with his father and brother, then going on to various jobs before finding his place at the LancasterLebanon IU13 as Manager of Job Training Services. There he was loved by many staff, students, and their families for his caring and professional way of handling important decisions that would affect their lives for many years to come. Joe retired in February 2016 from the IU13 and his impact in his department still resonates to this day.
Joe and his wife Cindy relocated to SC in May of 2022. They enjoyed their retirement there with good friends old and new and also many family visits to their home in Wind Jammer Village.
Joe will be greatly missed, and is survived by his wife, Cynthia Ann Lopett, nee Clements; children Jennifer (Michael) Haines, Jeremy Lopett, Victoria (Christopher) Collins and Brian Davis; grandchildren Mason, Austin, Duplica, Kamille, Taylor, Logan, Bently, Tamsyn, Ryker and Lennon; also, his brother Dave (Regina) Lopett, along with several other relatives. Acelebration of Joe’s life will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the Lancaster County Humane League, Saint Jude’s Childrens Hospital, or in SC to Kind Keeper Animal Rescue.
The family is being assisted by Clements Funeral & Cremation Services, Inc. in Durham, NC. Online condolences may be made at: www.clementsfuneralservice.com

Veterans Court seeks volunteer mentors
The Lancaster County Veterans Treatment Court is seeking volunteer mentors for veterans involved in the court’s alternative sentencing program.
The court program is aimed at giving veterans who have committed a crime the opportunity to get their lives back on
track. Those who complete the program successfully can have their record expunged, have more serious charges dropped and get a reduced sentencepossibly avoiding incarceration altogether. Program participants may have served in any branch of the U.S. military.
The rigorous program includes four phases, with requirements that participants abstain from alcohol and other drugs, find and maintain a job, participate in community service projects, attend court dates and show up for appointments with their probation officer and other court staff members.
The volunteer mentors must be veterans who are willing to take on a program participant as the participant moves through four phases. Mentoring typically involves attending weekly court sessions; keeping in touch with the mentee by text, phone or personal contact; and serving as a supportive presence.
The Veterans Court is one of three treatment courts that have been established in the Lancaster County court system to give a second chance to offenders who have struggled with the use of alcohol and

they provide when people struggling with substance use disorder need it the most.
Emminger knows firsthand what it’s like to have a loved one affected by the disorder. Her son, Anthony Perez, died from a heroin overdose in 2014 at age 23 after struggling with drug addiction for 10 years.
“It tore our family apart,” Emminger said of her son’s drug use. “I want parents to know that there is somewhere you can go to get help. You feel helpless and powerless when your kid is addicted, and so many bad things happen that we don’t talk about. I want them to know there is a place to go and talk about it with somebody who’s going to understand.”
DSAA offers a variety of educational programs and resources for individuals and families. The organization also recently received a second two-year grant for its Recovery Capital Program, which will be used to support new programming, including the addition of a forensic peer specialist. “This is someone who not only is in recovery from addiction, but also has served time in prison and understands the challenges of being released back into the community,” Emminger explained. “With this program, we meet people at the door when they get out of prison, and we work to set them up with a place to live,
other drugs or who are struggling with an untreated mental illness. The Veterans Court is administrated by Judge Jeffery D. Wright, and the mentors’ involvement gives another layer of support to the participants who commit to the program.
Many of the veteran mentors who are involved are retired or have flexible schedules that permit them to attend weekly court dates and other activities. Volunteers who are people of color or women are especially wanted.
To learn more about volunteer opportunities, contact Rich Wilson at 717-466-0978 or look for the table sponsored by the Lancaster County Veterans Treatment Court at the upcoming Recovery Day Lancaster on Saturday, Sept. 23, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Buchanan Park, Buchanan and Race avenues, Lancaster.
get them to probation meetings or drug and alcohol testing and provide any support we can.”
She’s also developing a reentry support group for people to find help facing some of the barriers in their way upon release from prison.
Although she’s honored to be receiving the Caron award, Emminger emphasized that she doesn’t do anything for the accolades.
“I’m always happy to talk about DSAA, but I struggle with receiving awards because to me, I’m just doing my work,” she said. “DSAA saved my life, and I want to be there to help other people.”
For more information on the awards breakfast or to purchase tickets, visit www.caron.org and click on “Events.” The breakfast will be held at the Reading Country Club, 5311 Perkiomen Ave. Tickets must be purchased by Wednesday, Sept. 20.

Old-fashioned fun for the whole family
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
“This is a great opportunity to bring the community together and let people know how things used to be done,” said Ron Bernhard, describing Susquehanna Old-Fashioned Field Days. The festivities will be held on Saturday, Sept. 16, and Sunday, Sept. 17, at Conoy Park, 2115 River Road, Bainbridge. The Conoy Lions Club will serve breakfast beginning at 7 a.m. both days. Opening ceremonies will begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday and at 10 a.m. on Sunday. This is the 25th annual event, which features machinery exhibits, craft vendors, demonstrations and more.
A fishing derby for children age 15 and under will be held following the opening ceremonies each morning. Participants should bring their own bait and rod. A tractor parade will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday and at noon on Sunday. On Sunday morning, an interdenominational church service will be held from 9 to 10 a.m.
Live entertainment will include a performance by a bluegrass band, beginning
about 10 a.m. on Saturday. A benefit auction will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, featuring household goods, antiques, baked goods and more. Proceeds from the auction will be used to fund future Old-Fashioned Field Days.
“We have a lot of demonstrations going on throughout the whole event,” said Tonya Bernhard, who is on the event committee with Ron. Demonstrations will include corn shelling and corn grinding, shingle sawing and apple cider making. A chainsaw carving demonstration will also be held. A variety of antique walkbehind garden tractors will be on display, along with other lawn and garden equipment. Revolutionary War and Civil War re-enactors will be onsite as well. Local churches and nonprofit groups will set up stands, with food options including homemade ice cream, homemade apple dumplings, hot dogs, french fries and soup.
“This event is very familyoriented, and we have a lot of kids’ activities,” Ron noted, adding that barrel train rides
and a hayride to a pumpkin patch will be offered.
Many people come to the event and stay all day, Tonya said, encouraging people to bring chairs to sit on while listening to the music or watching demonstrations.
She emphasized that Susquehanna Old-Fashioned Field Days, which is hosted by the Conoy Lions Club, would not be possible without the support of the community and a team of volunteers.

Titan Gilroy named keynote speaker
Titan Gilroy will be this year’s featured keynote speaker at the MX2023 Manufacturers’ Expo to be held on Thursday, Nov. 9, at the York Expo Center. Gilroy is CEO and founder of TITANS of CNC. Founded in 2005, the company specializes in manufacturing parts for the medical, subsea and aerospace industries.
Gilroy began his career in manufacturing when he walked away from his professional boxing career and his rough past, including prison time, and found himself in a CNC machine shop where everything in his life changed. He shared his story on the reality series “Titan: American Built,” which was dedicated to American manufacturing.
In the third season he went to San Quentin Prison and
built an Elite CNC Academy. It was because of this experience that Gilroy developed the free TITANS of CNC Academy curriculum, which is now backed by aerospace companies and industry partners like Kennametal, Mastercam and Mitutoyo, and endorsed by more than 1,000 companies and agencies, including NASA, Northrop Grumman, Boeing and Disney.
Gilroy will share a message of hope and redemption, along with practical tools for students, educators, shop owners and business leaders.
MX2023 is a manufacturing trade show established to help industries build local supply chains, exhibit capabilities and increase business opportunities and new customers.

Staying connected
How retirees can engage with their communities
People who are still a part of the workforce usually experience social interaction throughout the day as they collaborate on projects or gather with colleagues for lunch. Even those working remotely likely attend
meetings virtually and communicate with co-workers by phone or email.
Without co-workers around, retirees may sometimes find their social lives lacking. People may need to take steps to strengthen their social capital, a term that describes the strength of a
person’s social relationships and the extent to which people feel physically and emotionally supported by their communities. Retirees may look to a variety of activities in the community to keep them connected with others.
- Join a club or group. Individuals can identify an activity they find interesting and determine if there is a way to get involved with it in their community. Senior centers or adult activity providers may sponsor local programs, and libraries often host a variety of club and interest group meetings.
- Participate in worship. Many older adults find they want to reconnect with their faith at this point in their lives, even if attending services wasn’t a top priority earlier in life. Reach out to a local house of worship and find out when services take place and what activities are available.
- Read to children. Seniors can volunteer their services at a library by reading to youngsters. Interacting with other
generations can be inspiring.
- Volunteer at a soup kitchen or food pantry. Times continue to be challenging for many people who may find it hard to cover their expenses, and soup kitchens and food pantries can be a saving grace for those who might otherwise miss meals. Volunteering one’s time at these organizations can help make a difference in the lives of community members.
- Become a substitute teacher or paraprofessional. Many schools are experiencing shortages of qualified staff members. Retirees may find a place helping to shape the minds of youngsters by volunteering at schools or taking on part-time jobs in the classroom.
- Become a mentor. Seniors
can share their knowledge and experiences with a student, family member or other community member. Mentors needn’t have an advanced degree or special certification, but they should have more experience in a given field or subject than the mentee. The mentor should ask the mentee about his or her goals and expectations, listen carefully and then respond to the questions and needs of the mentee and adjust the material discussed as necessary to help the mentee meet his or her goals. Sessions should be planned at a time that suits both the mentee and mentor. Mentoring does not only benefit mentees; for mentors, it can keep an aging mind sharp, provide additional meaning
and purpose to life and foster social connections.
- Befriend neighbors. A passing greeting may have been the norm when people were busy working, but once people are retired, they may have more opportunities to get to know their neighbors better. Neighbors may even take turns hosting get-togethers. Moving to a retirement or active adult community may facilitate such friendships.
- Volunteer with local government. Retirees may enter a local school board election or try to become a member of the town council.
These are just a few of the many ways that retiree may get involved in their community and maintain strong social ties.
Engaging hobbies for seniors
The value of hobbies is undeniable. A 2014 study published in the Journal of Occupational and Organizational Psychology found that employees who engaged in creative hobbies outside of work were more creative on work projects and had a better attitude on the job. A separate study published in Psychosomatic Medicine in 2009 reported that individuals who engaged in enjoyable leisure activities had lower blood pressure and a smaller waist circumference.
The beneficial nature of hobbies is good news for seniors, many of whom have ample time for leisure activities. Whether seniors are retired or still working but
don’t have the responsibilities of parenting, the following are some fun and engaging hobbies to fill that free time.
- Cooking: Years spent hustling and bustling through the daily grind of personal and professional obligations might have forced individuals to focus on cooking that emphasized convenience over culinary skill. With more free time, seniors can look to cooking classes or take the self-taught route and purchase a new cookbook filled with delicious recipes. A wellcooked homemade meal can provide a sense of accomplishment and afford seniors an opportunity to control the ingredients in the foods they eat, which can be important
for individuals with healthrelated dietary restrictions.
- Writing: Many individuals have penned their memoirs after notable careers and lives. While individuals needn’t make their memoirs public, writing can be a great way for seniors to document their own lives and the lives of their family members. Interest in genealogy has risen considerably in recent years, as easily accessible websites like Ancestry.com and 23andMe.com have made it easier than ever for individuals to learn about their roots. Seniors can contextualize the information provided by genealogy websites by writing about their personal experiences and sharing what they know about the lives of their parents, siblings, grandparents, and other family members.
- Gardening: Seniors looking for hobbies that get them out in the great outdoors need look no further than their own backyards. Gardening can benefit the body in myriad ways. According to the Mayo Clinic Health System (MCHS), gardening has the potential to burn as many calories as working out in the gym. In addition, the MCHS notes that individuals who grow their own fruits and vegetables are more likely to

Picking the right time to retire
Professionals work hard to achieve both short- and longterm goals. Retirement certainly qualifies as a long-term goal, and many people spend decades building and investing in a nest egg that they hope will help them enjoy their golden years to the fullest extent.
The decision regarding when to retire is affected by a host of variables, so a good time for one individual may not be ideal for another. Professionals on the cusp of retirement can consider several factors as they try to pick the right time to retire.
Individuals should familiarize themselves with the rules of Social Security so they can maximize their benefits. Individuals can begin claiming Social Security benefits at age 62, although those benefits will be reduced by 25%. If individuals wait until they are 66 or, in some cases, 67 to claim Social Security benefits, they will receive their full benefits. The Social Security Administration notes that
Hobbies frompg 6
include those foods in their own diets, thus saving them money at the grocery store and also increasing their intake of nutrient-rich foods.
- Swimming: Swimming is an ideal exercise for seniors, as it’s low-impact but still a great way to utilize the entire
those who can wait until age 70 to claim benefits will receive as much as 132% of the monthly benefit they would have received at full retirement age. These distinctions are especially important for people who will be looking to government-sponsored programs to provide significant financial support in retirement. Individuals who won’t rely as heavily on such programs may be able to retire earlier.
Seniors should also consider their debts. Carrying debt into retirement can be risky, so it’s ideal to pay off all debts, including a mortgage and car payments, before retiring. Doing so can provide more financial flexibility and make it easier to manage unforeseen expenses, such as those incurred due to health problems.
Seniors must also consider their retirement living expenses. It’s clear that a sizable nest egg is a necessity for anyone hoping to live comfortably in retirement, but the tricky part is figuring
out just how big that nest egg must be. Individuals can speak with a financial adviser and discuss what their retirement living expenses will be. Conventional wisdom based on the Consumer Price Index suggests individuals will need to replace between 70% and 80% of their pre-retirement income after concluding their career. But even that figure is not set in stone, as rising inflation, such as the rapid spike experienced in 2022, can quickly put retirees in financial jeopardy. By estimating the expenses they might have in retirement, individuals can begin to see how close to or far away from retirement they may be. They should budget for inflation so any spike in living expenses can be easier to manage.
Many individuals recognize that there’s no perfect time to retire, but a few simple strategies can help people make the best decision possible.

Students invited to apply for Young Ambassadors Program
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) and Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful are inviting 10th- through 12th-grade students from around the state to help keep Pennsylvania clean and beautiful through the Young Ambassadors of Pennsylvania program.
The program seeks to build community stewards and civic leaders by inspiring, engaging and empowering young Pennsylvanians to not only keep their communities clean and beautiful but also to become ambassadors in their community for a shared vision of a clean and beautiful Pennsylvania. Applicants should be passionate about the environment and committed to making Pennsylvania the best place to live, work and play through volunteerism and leadership.
The Young Ambassadors program provides opportunities for high school students
to train and network with industry leaders, state agencies, local media and the Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful network to increase leadership and problem solving skills and prepare them to continue to make differences in their communities and beyond.
Chosen candidates will commit to serve as an Ambassador from October through May 2024 and represent and uphold the mission and values of Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful.
Other responsibilities include attending six mandatory virtual education sessions, conducting a community assessment and creating a summary presentation, organizing and participating in at least one community cleanup event through Pick Up PA and conducting one community education event or activity. There will also be non-mandatory education sessions on a variety of topics.
Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful will provide education and training to program participants on topics related to the impact of litter on roadways, litter prevention, waste management and recycling, civic engagement and related public policy, volunteer management and social media marketing. The program will provide networking opportunities to not only build a sense of community within the program but also to promote professional development of the individual students. In addition, Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful has partnered with Columbia Gas of Pennsylvania funded by the NiSource Charitable Foundation to provide job shadowing days to select Ambassadors.
The Young Ambassadors program was recommended in the commonwealth’s Litter Action Plan announced by the governor’s office in November 2021 and is funded by PennDOT.

Schreiber Pediatric will hold annual Rubber Duckie Race and Festival
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
The 35th annual Rubber Duckie Race and Festival will be held on Sunday, Sept. 10, at Lancaster County Central Park, 1050 Rockford Road, Lancaster. The rain-or-shine festival will take place from 2 to 5:30 p.m., and the rubber duckie race will begin at 5 p.m. A variety of food and beverages will be available to purchase from more than a dozen food trucks during the event. The festival will feature a variety of games and activities such as arts and crafts stations, traditional carnival games and face painting.
Participants will have a chance to win prizes at each game, including books, stuffed animals, bracelets and small toys. Members of the 4-H club will offer pony rides for children. There will be no charge to attend the festival, but attendees will need to purchase tickets to partake in the games and activities.
At 5 p.m., more than 10,000 rubber ducks will be dropped into the Conestoga River for the traditional race and primary attraction of the festival. Ducks may be adopted online ahead of the event or on the day of the race, and each owner of a racing duck will be
entered into a drawing for cash prizes and gift cards. Sponsorships are also available for the race; sponsors and those who adopt a duck will receive a souvenir duckie to take home, which will include limitededition Halloween- and backto-school-themed ducks. To adopt a duck or to become a sponsor, visit www.schreiber pediatric.org/events/duckies.
Since the festival began 35 years ago, it has cemented its role as a beloved tradition in the community, and it draws more than 1,000 attendees each year. The event serves as one of the largest yearly fundraisers for Schreiber Center for Pediatric

College president to retire
Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences (PA College) has announced that president Mary Grace Simcox will retire as of Dec. 31.
Simcox is the first and only president of the college, and she was responsible for evolving the school from a degree-granting institute to an accredited college. She joined what is now PA College in 1997 as the dean of nursing for Lancaster Institute for Health Education (LIHE). Seven months later, she stepped into an interim role overseeing all of LIHE’s programs, and the position became permanent in 1998. Working with a small group of staff members and faculty, Simcox led the evolution of LIHE to become the Lancaster General College of Nursing and Health Sciences in 2001.
In the years that followed, Simcox oversaw the addition of bachelor’s and graduate degree programs, building expansions, and a name change. She also led the college’s transition to its current campus in Lancaster, and with it, a change in philosophy that puts the learner at the center of the educational experience. Part of that transformation included adding The Center forExcellence in Practice, which is the college’s simulation center. The center includes more than 20,000 square feet of immersive, interdisciplinary, and hyperrealistic clinical simulation space with 24 rooms, including an intensive care unit. It was engineered to feel natural and authentic to learners from all facets of health care, and it is the culmination of nearly a decade of planning and collaboration with experts in simulation education. Simcox also oversaw an affiliation with Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health (LGH), providing clinical placement and tuition reimbursement for PA College students and LGH employees.
Additionally, Simcox led the college through three rounds of accreditation through the nationally-recognized Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE), entailing a multiyear process intended to ensure both academic credibility and caliber of the college. During its last reaccreditation in 2021, PA College
received 12 recognitions from MSCHE for the quality of its graduates, its health and wellness programming, the Center for Teaching and Learning, the Center for Excellence in Practice, and the health care core curriculum.
Simcox began her career in 1972 when she graduated with an associate degree in nursing from Gwynedd Mercy College. She worked as a registered nurse for several years on the medical-surgical floor and then the intensive care unit of Roxborough Memorial Hospital before accepting a teaching position with the Roxborough School of Nursing in 1979. She then became director of the school in 1985 and remained in that position until she joined LIHE in 1997. She received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Gwynedd Mercy College in 1978, her Master of Science in Nursing with a clinical nurse specialty in renal disease from the University of Pennsylvania in 1981, and her doctorate in higher education from Widener University in 1998.
Simcox has held leadership roles in a variety of professional organizations.
Her retirement precedes PA College’s merger with Saint Joseph’s University in Philadelphia, set to be completed in January 2024. Through the merger, more than 20 of PA College’s nursing and allied health programs ranging from certificates through the doctoral level will be adopted by Saint Joseph’s academic portfolio.

Additionally, the funds raised by the Rubber Duckie Race and Festival will help Schreiber to complete its ongoing expansion project, which will entail moving its operation to a larger facility on its current premises.
The new building will allow more space for treatments such as physical, occupational and speech therapy, as well as increase Schreiber’s availability to see patients on its waiting list. The organization expects to fully relocate to the new facility in the fall.

“The mission and future vision of Mt. Hope will be shared, and attendees will also hear personal stories of how Mt. Hope touched people’s lives when they needed answers and provided a way to help families in need,” Wilson remarked. “Mt. Hope continues to be an inviting and welcoming place for everyone who needs our services. We are continuing strong in our founding mission to provide affordable, quality care in a Christian environment, serving the least of these, regardless of someone’s resources or ever-changing financial circumstances.”
Mt. Hope is largely supported by Medicaid state assistance, Wilson shared, noting that a large gap exists in what the state reimburses long-term care facilities and the actual cost of nursing care. “Raising funds to assist in helping residents who are not able to afford the cost of their care or benevolent care is a growing need,” she said.
This is the second year for
the banquet fundraiser, which is the largest giving opportunity for the community to support the work of Mt. Hope. “We are striving to exceed our goal of $50,000, which is what was so generously shared last year,” Wilson said. “People attending the banquet will be truly amazed at everything Mt. Hope accomplished over the past few years. We have some exciting news about our future next steps as we begin the planning process of looking towards additional renovations and upgrades.”
To reserve individual, couple or group seating at the banquet, contact Wilson at 717-6828026 or advancement@mt hopenazarene.org. There is also an opportunity to be an event or table sponsor for a fee. The banquet reservation deadline is Friday, Sept. 15. The benefit meal is free; however, attendees at the banquet will have an opportunity to financially support the ongoing work of Mt. Hope as well as a suggested donation to support the cost of the banquet.
