“Frozen JR.” shares message of the power of love
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Love can conquer all, and that message will take the spotlight when Susquehanna Stage presents “Frozen JR.” The show will be performed at the theater, 133 W. Market St., Marietta, on select dates between Friday, Sept. 13, and Saturday, Sept. 21.
Based on the popular Disney movie, “Frozen JR.” tells the story of two sisters, one born

with magical powers and one without, said Brielle Grove, who portrays Elsa in the show.
“Anna and Elsa grow up together, but when they were children, there was an accident with the powers, and Elsa hurt her younger sister, and they slowly separate after their parents pass away,” she explained. “The whole show is basically Elsa learning how to control her powers and also share them with her kingdom and embrace it.”
Like the movie, “Frozen JR.” features well-known songs such as “Let It Go,” “Fixer Upper” and “Do You Want to Build a Snowman?” The stage version, which is a shorter show designed for young audiences, also includes new songs, including “Hygge,” which is performed by Oaken and his family.
Performing in the show is exciting, said Jordyn Good, who plays Olaf, but it also comes with a bit of pressure.
“Everybody knows these characters,” she said. “Olaf is happy and fun, so you just have to be happy and fun. It’s kind of difficult to be the way Olaf would act, but then to put it into your own character. You just have to have fun with it.”
For Brielle, an eighth-grader in the Lampeter-Strasburg School District, mastering the song “Let It Go” has been challenging, but she’s up for it.

EPC will commemorate 70th anniversary with community event

In 1954, Alvin Engle bought a printing press with a dream of starting his own publication. Alvin, who had been working full time in the printing business, put the press in the basement of his home in Mount Joy,
and together he and his wife, Pauline, laid the foundation for what would become Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC). As EPC celebrates its 70th anniversary this year, the company invites members of the community to attend an open house from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on

“Tuck Everlasting” to engage theater audiences
BY JEFF FALK
There are few forms of entertainment more engaging than live theater. And having it performed close to home makes it more convenient.
Sort of a modern touring theatrical troupe, Servant Stage brings the intriguing art of live theater to the viewing audience.
“TV, movies and live theater have these amazing stories,” said Johnathan Bauer, the founder and executive director of Servant Stage. “But with live theater, you become part of the story; it draws you in. It only happens for that one moment in time. The next night is going to be a completely different performance.”
Drivers Appreciation Week Sept
Servant Stage will present 12 performances of “Tuck Everlasting,” a Broadway musical adapted from Natalie Babbitt’s beloved novel, on select dates from Friday, Sept. 13, through Sunday, Sept. 29, at Warwick High School’s Performing Arts Center, 301 W. Orange St., Lititz. The shows will be staged on Fridays and Saturdays at 7 p.m. and on Saturdays and Sundays at 2 p.m.
Admittance to each show will be on a pay-asyou-will basis. Tickets can
be reserved in advance at www.servantstage.org or by calling 717-455-0255.
“The main character, 11-year-old Winnie, sets out on an adventure and meets the magical, mysterious Tuck family in the woods,” said Bauer. “In the end, Winnie faces a decision to live a normal life or become immortal. It’s very entertaining and makes you think. It really emphasizes time, the importance of time and how we spend our time.”
A full-blown musical for people of all ages, “Tuck Everlasting” has a plot that moves quickly, and the show features music, singing and athletic dancing. Each two-hour, two-act performance includes an intermission.
The show has a cast of more than 50 members of varying ages from Lancaster and surrounding counties - some of whom are professionals and others of
whom are relatively new to live theater.
“The whole village is part of the story,” said Bauer. “It’s got that classic feel with a large cast. (Cast members are) from all different backgrounds. Some are student performers. Some are emerging artists. Some have been performing their whole lives. Some are amateurs in the true sense and just love to do it.”
“Tuck Everlasting” is one of about 14 productions - totaling nearly 180 performances - that nonprofit Servant Stage will present this year at 50 venues across Lancaster County. It’s community theater brought to life in churches, parks, colleges and retirement communities.
“It keeps us busy, but it’s by design,” said Bauer. “Our mission of accessibility brings shows to where the people are. It’s amazing how rich Lancaster County is in
See “Tuck Everlasting” pg 3
it, because it’s such a wellknown song, so there’s a bit of pressure,” she said. “But it’s also really fun to sing it, especially in your own way. Getting to sing it my own way is super fun.”
She’s also working hard on mastering a difficult quick change, when her regular dress transforms into Elsa’s snow queen outfit during the song.
“The quick change is kind of stressful, but at the same time, it’s going to be so fun and cool, especially for the little ones in the audience to be like, ‘Whoa! How’d she do that?’” she said.
“Frozen JR.” features a cast of more than 50 students and is part of the theater’s Children’s Workshop programming. Students range in age from 7 to 14 years old.
Along with characters made famous in the movie, the stage show includes a dance ensemble called the Snow Chorus, Brielle shared. “They follow me through almost all my songs,” she said. “They do a lot of fun, beautiful, elegant dancing.”
Many of the students in the production, including
Brielle and Jordyn, have participated in Susquehanna Stage’s workshop performances before.
“It’s so fun being a part of this theater,” stated Jordyn, an eighth-grader who attends Donegal Junior High School. “Anything we do here is so fun.”
Added Brielle, “If your kid ever expressed wanting to do something like this or loves singing, loves acting, I would definitely recommend starting here because it’s such a fun experience.”
Both girls invite audiences to come to the show for an entertaining hour of singing and dancing on stage.
“If you grew up watching the movie, it’s really fun to see it come to life on stage,” Jordyn said. “It’s definitely a family show, so if you have children, come see it. Who doesn’t love ‘Frozen’?”
“Frozen JR.” will be performed at 7:30 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, Sept. 13, 14, 20 and 21, as well as at 2 p.m. on Sept. 14 and 21 and Sunday, Sept. 15. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit www .susquehannastage.com.

the arts, and it’s not always accessible for everyone. For us, theater is a service to the community.”
With its performances, Servant Stage reaches nearly 50,000 audience members each year.
“The major change is the scope and the impact we are having,” said Bauer, who was an actor when he founded Servant Stage in 2012. “The scale we are doing now is different, but
the heart and mission feels the same. It’s people who love theater and love the community. I think that’s what’s driving our success.”
“When people hear ‘community theater’ or ‘pay-as-you-will,’ I think it comes with certain negative expectations,” Bauer added. “But when people come, they’re blown away. The people involved are just so talented. You have to see it to believe it.”

UDS wraps up another successful golf outing
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
The first day of school can be an exciting time for many children; the start of the academic year sets the stage for countless opportunities to make friends and explore new subjects. But the first few weeks of classes can also be a stressful time for students as they transition to a different schedule and acclimate to the change of pace. On the first day of the 2024-25 school year, many students in Lancaster County were greeted by a special staff member: a facility dog that has been trained by United Disabilities Services (UDS) to help kids overcome the anxiety and stress of the school day.
Dogs trained by UDS specialize in a few key areas, but the organization has seen a growing trend in the number of local school districts requesting canines for their classrooms. These facility dogs are placed in schools to help create a calming learning environment, and they receive special training to comfort students who struggle with anxiety and to help de-escalate emotional outbursts. Over the last five years, UDS has received more applications for facility dogs than ever before; the organization began talks with the School District of Lancaster to place dogs in its schools downtown, and these special canine helpers
set out for a day on the green during the 2024 UDS golf outing at Crossgates Golf Club in Millersville.
can be now found in nearly every school district in the county.
UDS began training 16 new puppies this year, and it invests upward of $25,000 per dog over the course of its training. To sustain its service dog programs, UDS holds an annual golf tournament. The event took place on Aug. 16 this year, and it was the first time the fundraiser had a full flight of 144 golfers. The tournament raised more than $65,000 for UDS, which is a $10,000 increase from last year. “I am beyond proud. We exceeded all expectations,” said Lori Breece, UDS service dog manager. “Starting out strong in the new fiscal year puts us in a good position to continue our work through the winter months when things usually slow down.”
This is the fourth year UDS has hosted a golf fundraiser. A few key changes were made to enhance golfers’ experience and to keep the pace of play moving
LBC slates seminar
Lancaster Bible College (LBC) and Apologetics for the Church will co-host a half-day seminar titled “Dignity Beyond Accomplishment: Valuing All People in a Culture of Death.” The program will take place from 9 a.m. to noon on Friday, Sept. 13, at Lancaster Bible College, 901 Eden Road, Lancaster. Geared toward pastors, church leaders, counselors and others, the seminar will focus on threats to the sanctity of life and apologetics for a Christian view of life and dignity.
The keynote speaker will be Justin R. Hawkins, a postdoctoral fellow at the Columbia Center for Clinical Medical Ethics at Columbia University.
His research areas include virtue ethics, bioethics, disability theory, and the relationship of political theory and Christian theology. Hawkins earned a doctorate with distinction from Yale University, a Master of Arts in religion in the philosophy of religion from Yale Divinity School, and a Bachelor of Arts in government from Georgetown University. Organizing the event is Mark Farnham, LBC professor and director of the online Master of Arts in Christian apologetics program. He is also founder and director of Apologetics for the Church and the author of “Every Believer Confident: Apologetics for the Ordinary
swiftly, and the event was shortened from six hours to five hours. UDS attributes the growing success of the fundraiser to the growing demand for dogs, as well as new partnerships with local businesses and sponsors. In addition to the funds raised by the golf outing and local sponsors, UDS relies on numerous volunteers to sustain its service dog programs. Each dog must complete a 22-month training process, and volunteers assist by walking dogs and taking them home for a weekend to get a break from the kennel. “I can’t overstate how important volunteers are. Without them, we can’t bring in new puppies and they don’t get enough socialization during training,” Breece said. “We’re always looking for people to help with whatever they can, even if it’s just walking a dog for an hour. There’s no commitment.”

bluegrass bands, demonstrations, re-enactors, vendors and food.
A benefit auction will begin at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
“We will have lots of variety,” said event volunteer Tonya Bernhard, describing the auction. “There are usually a lot of antiques, but we never really know what we’re going to have because it’s whatever people donate.”
through the 1930s. “The engines fire, and then they coast,” said Ron, who collects the equipment. “They are belt driven, and they were used all over farms.”
New this year, the event will offer an opportunity to win a variety of giveaway baskets, featuring gift cards to local businesses and attractions, personal care products, a “Taste of Lancaster County” basket and more.
Lots of old-fashioned activities and demonstrations will take place throughout the weekend, Tonya said.
“We’ll have both Civil War and Revolutionary War re-enactors. There will be somebody pressing cider. There’s a shingle mill, a sawmill and a blacksmith,” she commented. “We will have all kinds of hit and miss engines. They might be shelling corn or running water.”
As volunteer Ron Bernhard explained, hit and miss engines had their heyday in the late 1800s
A kids’ zone will feature old-fashioned games organized by a local church, and additional kids’ activities will include barrel train rides, corn sandboxes and rides to a pumpkin patch to pick a pumpkin.
“We have a lot of craft vendors, and many of them have been coming back for years,” said volunteer Sandy Baker. “We have vendors who sell soap. We have a woman who makes embroidered items. We’ll have a Tastefully Simple vendor.”
Homemade food is also a highlight of the event, said volunteer Jolynn Bernhard.
“We have homechurned ice cream, apple dumplings, whoopie pies,” she shared. “We have lots of food stands.”
The Lions Club will host a new food stand featuring half-chickens, Ron said, with proceeds going to support future old-fashioned days. “All of the money we raise, through the auction and everything else, goes
right back into the show so we can keep this going year after year,” Tonya remarked.
The Bernhards have been helping to organize the event for decades, and they said they look forward to it every year.
“It’s just rewarding to see all the families there,” Ron stated. “Even if people don’t have much interest in the hit and miss engines, which is my thing, there are so many other things for them to see and do. We get so much positive feedback, so it’s rewarding that way.”
Jolynn noted that some families have been coming back year after year. “We have so many generations
that come to this,” she said. “We’ll have a lot of three- and four-generation families.”
Ron encourages everyone to come out for at least one of the days, noting that admission and parking are free.
Added Tonya, “It’s a very family-oriented event. People will show you how things were done back then. If you’re watching a demonstration and you have questions, you can ask the demonstrators, and they will be more than happy to talk to you about what they’re doing.”
