DSAA Seeks Donations For Care Kits BY FRANCINE FULTON
One of life’s greatest tragedies is when a parent loses a child. But some grieving parents have been able to transform their heartbreak into positive efforts to benefit the community. Such is the case with Stacy Emminger, executive director of the Donegal Substance Abuse Alliance (DSAA), which supports those in recovery and provides assistance to families that have a loved one with addiction issues. Emminger lost her son, Anthony Perez, to an overdose when he was 23. The family decided to form DSAA after learning that other local parents were dealing the same issues. DSAA began by offering family support groups that met at the Sheetz Reception Center in Mount Joy. Emminger later became a certified family recovery specialist, and the facility opened its own office in 2015. In 2019, DSAA relocated to a new and larger space at 78 E. Main St.,
Mount Joy. After being approached by Rick Kastner, executive director of the Lancaster County Drug and Alcohol Commission, DSAA became affiliated with the agency. “We work one-on-one with families,” Emminger said. “We guide them through steps they can take to guide their loved ones to get some help. We also offer support groups and refer (people) to treatment centers.” DSAA’s latest effort is to provide care kits to those who have recently completed an addiction treatment program and are residing in recovery houses. “Our outreach coordinator has been connecting with all the recovery houses in (Lancaster) County to see what their needs are,” said Emminger. “Even though our focus is the Elizabethtown, Mount Joy and Marietta area, we are a county organization.” DSAA had string bags emblazoned with its logo and began filling them with items from its in-house supply of hygiene products. Also included in the bags is information about DSAA and its services.
GOTR To Screen Film Focused On Anxiety Free Link To Connect Families To “Angst” BY ANN MEAD ASH
Sarah Yohe, development director with Girls on the Run (GOTR), has an analogy concerning the different types and levels of anxiety people are feeling in relation to the pandemic. “ We are all in the same storm, but we all have our own individual boats with their own holes in them that we are trying to keep plugged to stay afloat,” she said. ECHOS Plans First 30 In 3 Giving Event BY ANN MEAD ASH
Katlyn Lantz, development coordinator with ECHOS (Elizabethtown Community Housing & Outreach Services), has fond memories of the organization’s first fundraising banquet, called the One Community Many Neighbors Celebration, which was held in fall 2019. “We all gathered together to hear about ECHOS’ mission and vision,” she recalled, noting that past ECHOS clients spoke at the event. “This year, we had hoped to do

the same,” continued Lantz, who noted that the COVID-19 pandemic served to change the organization’s plans. Instead, ECHOS is putting together a different type of appeal, titled “30 in 3.” “It’s a virtual fundraiser,” explained Lantz. “We are going to try to raise $30,000 in three days.” The fundraiser will kick off at 3 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 22, and end at 3 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 24. Plans for the fundraiser include spotlight videos focusing on donors and clients and stakeholders in the community.

tally of the amount raised. “On that same page, we also have a pledge form,” said Lantz. “People who can’t give during those days but want to give within the next few months can fill out that form and get in contact with us.” “At the very end of the event, around 4 p.m., we will gather our staff and some board members (hopefully) outside,” said Lantz, who noted the organization plans to livestream the final celebration from multiple internet sources. ECHOS provides a variety of services to the community from the Community Place on Washington (CPOW), a complex that is scheduled to break ground for an expansion on Friday, Sept. 11. ECHOS’ shelter, which has existed for five years, moved from a local church to the building, which was once a parochial school, in 2018. Need for the facility increased by 20% last year. The year before that it increased 70%. But the winter shelter is only the beginning of ECHOS’ services to the community. Deb Jones, executive director of ECHOS, explained that the organization oversees 13 additional programs that offer community social services integrated with services designed to prevent and alleviate poverty with a goal of empowering stability among families and individuals in the Elizabethtown and Donegal school districts. Jones noted that the ECHOS team of 16 works with 300 volunteers to help clients define and solve a crisis to go from surviving to thriving. “We have family and individual support programs, addiction prevention,” she said, adding that in the organization’s past fiscal year, more than 800 individuals were helped. “We work with a family to help them holistically to address issues,” said Jones of the 2,000 work hours the team puts in yearly. “We look at the stability of housing, family dynamics. We teach soft skills, problem solving, and budgeting. This isn’t a Band Aid. It is helping (clients) to alleviate crisis in a way that will stimulate growth.” Lantz noted that the response to the 2019 banquet was positive and that organizers would love to see that momentum continue. “We’re hoping for the same kind of

Those not local to the area are invited to order items for donation or sponsor a bag for a set fee. “You could order a case of shampoo and have it sent to us or donate via PayPal or send a check. All the money will be kept separately (for the kits),” Emminger noted. Most importantly, donors are asked to send a note or a card to put in the bag. “The
thing that touches (the recipients) the most is if you write a personal note. Just put your first name and say, ‘Keep up the good work’ or ‘ We are praying for you.’ It makes them feel like someone (cares) about them,” Emminger emphasized. A secondary goal is to make the community aware of people in recovery houses, many of whom are unemployed and are continuing with outpatient treatment to battle their addictions. “(They are) learning how to exist without the substance they depended on,”

said Emminger. “We want the community to come around them. I believe the solution to addiction is community. Addiction is a very isolating disease.” Emminger pointed out that DSAA will continue to assemble the care kits as the number of recovery houses increases. “ When we have enough filled bags for a certain house, we will pack them, and we will take them out. It will be an ongoing (effort),” she said. For more information, readers may email dsasquared@gmail.com or call 717-492-4596. the facets of anxiety and how it impacts relationships, along with offering possible solutions. Olympic athlete Michael Phelps is interviewed, as are mental health experts. “‘Angst’ opens up the conversation about anxiety,” said Yohe, who added that the film fits with the curriculum of the weekly GOTR team meetings. “We provide a really safe space for our girls to sit and talk about their emotions and name their emotions,” she said. “When we saw this documentary, we realized that this is a (way to) engage our community in a conversation that is so important to have right now.” “The film (seeks to) normalize the conversation (about anxiety),” said GOTR Lancaster executive director Carrie Johnson. “It makes it feel that it’s OK to talk about this because everyone experiences it.” Johnson noted that with teams meeting in a variety of ways this fall, including virtually and in environments where it is safer to socially distance, the organization wanted to do more. “We feel
GOTR has offered a film on a culturally significant topic with a panel discussion to its members and families. In January, the organization screened “LIKE - A Documentary About the Impact of Social Media on Our Lives and the Effects of Technology on the Brain” at the Ware Center in Lancaster. GOTR administration felt that this was an apt time to repeat that type of event, but this time in a virtual format. “When we have a pandemic, which we have all never experienced (before), we have to look at things differently,” said Johnson. “This needs to be part of what we do for our community.”
such a sense of responsibility to the hundreds of girls we would normally have in our program this fall,” she said. “(We asked), ‘How can we reach them in a way that is important and relevant?’” Realizing the film could have an impact, GOTR chose to offer the screening. Area families who wish to register to watch the film may do so for free at www.gotrlancaster.org. A few days before the event, GOTR will send registered parties a link to the online event. In addition to the link, families will receive a discussion guide they can use to follow along. “IndieFlix has also provided pandemic tips for parents to help them deal with kids’ anxiety,” said Yohe. Because there are only a limited number of links available, organizers encourage GOTR members and families to register early. Sponsorships are being sought, and opportunities to donate will be offered at registration. “We are calling this a Thoughtful Fundraiser,” noted Yohe. This is not the first time

readers may call Kris Wilson at 717-6828026 or email advancement@mthope nazarene.org by Monday, Sept. 21. Extra meals will be available while supplies last. Due to coronavirus restrictions, those serving meals will follow CDC guidelines. No handling of money will occur on the day of food pickup. A dropbox will be provided for customers to leave payments in the form of cash or of checks made payable to “Mt. Hope NRC.” Located in Rapho Township, Manheim, Mount Hope is a 50-bed skilled nursing and rehabilitation facility. Wilson, director of advancement, has had personal experiences with the facility. “My life has been touched by Mount Hope, as this facility beautifully cared for my mother during the last two years of her life,” she said. Mount Hope has been named a fivestar nursing facility in the county by the Pennsylvania Department of Health and is largely supported by Medicaid, which covers the costs of those who cannot afford nursing home costs on their own. “Everything in the way of donations coming into Mount Hope goes right back to the residents,” said Wilson. “We are not a fancy facility, but we are a warm, family-friendly inviting community.”
Not only does Mount Hope have a history of caring for seniors in its foundational roots dating back to 1969 as the Dunkard Brethren Church Home, but Mount Hope accepts senior applicants regardless of their ability to pay for the cost of their nursing care. As part of an effort to serve seniors with lower incomes, Grace Point Church of the Nazarene purchased the Dunkard Brethren Church Home at 3026 Mount Hope Home Road, Manheim, in 2007. The building soon was filled with seniors and disabled older adults who needed nursing care. Today, as it was in past years, Mount Hope continues with this foundational mission. “The mission of being able to provide affordable, quality nursing care to those families who have loved ones in need and find themselves on lower fixed incomes is something only made possible through the support and generosity of our community,” Wilson said. “It takes an entire community of people, interacting together with Mount Hope, to ensure that this unique nursing care service continues for our aging population.” For more information, readers may call 717-665-6365 or visit www.mthope nazarene.org.

S TAY S A F E So our community can stay open. It’s good to be open. But to stay open, we need to stop the spread of COVID-19. We can do that with three simple steps: • Wear a mask in public
• Wash your hands often
• Maintain social distance — 6 feet
These methods have been shown to work. So let’s keep at it. Thank you for doing your part.
