Glossbrenner Church will host free Family Fall Festival

For the members of Glossbrenner Church, what happens outside the sanctuary is just as important as what happens inside. With that in mind, the church will hold a Family Fall Festival on Saturday, Oct. 5. The drop-in event will run from 5 to 7 p.m. at the church, 713 Church St., Mount Joy. It will be held in the upper parking lot on the corner of Water and Angle streets, unless the weather is inclement, in which case it will be held in the church fellowship hall.

Jessica Rockey, children and youth director for the church, explained that that festival will offer fun for people of all ages.

“We’ll have games with prizes for all ages, crafts, decorate

a pumpkin, a family photo, free food and make-your-own s’mores,” she shared. “And of course, we’ll have a bounce house.”

This is the third year the church has held the fall festival, which is an opportunity for members of the congregation to connect with the wider community, Rockey said.

“We want to make an impact on our community, get to personally know the people in our area,” she commented. “We want to give back and let everyone know they are welcome to take part in the fun and fellowship here at Glossbrenner.”

The church holds worship services on Sundays at 10 a.m., alternating between contem porary and traditional services.

“We always have something for the children, and we have Sunday school for all ages, including adult groups, from 11:15 a.m. to noon,” Rockey said.

She hopes the community will come out for the Family Fall Festival to enjoy time together and get to meet new friends.

“Come out and make memories with your family as a gift from us to you,” she said. “We know times are tough, and it can be hard to find affordable ways to make memories outside of the house, so let us provide for you a free fun fall festival that all ages are sure to enjoy.”

How did you spend your summer vacation? If you’re Josh Curry, a senior at Lancaster County Career & Technology Center, you took a bike ride. A very long, very challenging bike ride.

Josh, who is the son of Anita Curry of Lititz, participated in the Adirondack Boys Summer Challenge Ride with Lifecycles, an organization that promotes character building and faith

development through bicycling.

For a week in late July and early August, Josh rode more than 350 miles from Pennsylvania to Whiteface Mountain at the north end of the Adirondack Mountains.

“Some of the highlights were the beautiful scenery in upstate New York, the amazing food and great fellowship and discipleship,” he said.

Challenge Ride is an accurate name for the trip, he stated, adding, “Some of the

Christian nonprofit organization American Home Life International (AHLI) began decades ago with the dream of Marvin and Ruth Powers, a newlywed couple from Lancaster that wished to serve side by side as missionaries overseas. Although their initial dream of evangelism abroad was never realized, Marvin and Ruth hosted their

first international student in 1972. More than fifty years later, AHLI has served thousands of students from around the globe, and it continues to help them find host families throughout the United States.

AHLI’s mission statement is to “provide quality education programs to international students in the safe, caring environment of Christian host families where they will experience the love of

Christ.” Nicole Bianchi, a resident of West Lampeter, is an AHLI coordinator. Bianchi’s job is to locate families in the community that wish to open their homes to students, visiting the potential hosts to make sure they will be a good fit. “I love my job. The kinds of families that open up their homes are usually incredible people,” Bianchi said. “Every time I leave a home, I’m blown away by the heart of the community.”

Bianchi’s experience with AHLI began when she was 6 years old, after her parents had decided to host students through the

organization. “It was just a part of our normal family culture,” said Bianchi. “I even went to Japan to visit a student who I consider a sister to me.”

After graduating high school, Bianchi married a professional baseball player whose career required them to travel frequently. Bianchi and her husband lived with AHLI host families until his retirement, and they decided to become a host family themselves after returning to Lancaster. Bianchi has hosted students from various countries in Europe and Asia, and she is currently hosting a student from China. As a coordinator, Bianchi meets with visiting students once per month to check in and share a fun activity.

“I had such a passion for (AHLI) from hosting,” Bianchi said. “I feel like it does things really well, putting kids in safe, caring homes while they get an education in Lancaster.” Although Bianchi is based in West Lampeter, host families can be located anywhere in the county.

In addition to providing international students with a safe environment to receive an education, Bianchi said AHLI allows families a paid opportunity to learn about other cultures. “People think it’s going to be like having another kid, but it really ends up being a blessing,” added Bianchi. “Parents already have to make dinner, and every day our student will tell us about his culture, which is good for my kids to hear about.”

challenges were days with a lot of climbing.” The route included traveling along the Susquehanna River to its source at Cooperstown, N.Y., across the Erie Canal and into the mountains, finishing with a ride to the 4,867-foot summit of Whiteface Mountain.

Josh has been participating in Lifecycles for four years. He encourages other students to join the group, noting, “There is no other organization like it, and it will build your character.”

Character building is something volunteer Al Vega has noticed during his seven years with the organization. Like Josh, Al participated in a Challenge Ride this summer.

He drove a support vehicle for a girls’ team that rode from Manistee, Mich., to Mackinac Island. The ride covered 230 miles along the scenic coast of Lake Michigan and took place over a week in mid-August.

“The girls and leaders had an amazing experience,” Al shared.

“The beautiful scenery stops along Lake Michigan and biking around Mackinac Island were highlights, with plenty of time for photos and exploring.”

Al first participated in a Chal -

lenge Ride with Lifecycles in 2018, when he rode along with his then-13-year-old son on the Great Allegheny Passage and C&O Canal Trail from McKeesport to Washington, D.C. In 2019, they rode from New Holland, where they live, to Boston. In 2020, they completed a loop from Gettysburg to Harpers Ferry to Columbia as a substitution for a planned ride that was postponed due to the pandemic.

The postponed trip eventually happened in 2021, he said.

“I joined the 60-day TransAmerica ride from Oregon to Delaware,” he recalled of the 2021 trip. “In 2022, we rode from Niagara Falls to Lubec, Maine, and in 2023, from Portland, Maine, to Philadelphia.”

Al said he was impressed with Lifecycles as soon as he met the organization’s director, Lee DeRemer.

“The camaraderie among the leaders and their enthusiasm for the program immediately drew me in,” Al said. “I attended the first ride of the season and saw the strong bonds between the boys and leaders and how they learned from one another. I kept coming back, and now my whole family participates.”

Founded in 2014 by Lee and

his wife, Marcie, Lifecycles has a mission to build young men and women of character through weeknight local rides throughout Lancaster County as well as Saturday rides and the weeklong Summer Challenge Rides. There is no charge for teens to participate in Lifecycles, and bikes and equipment are provided if needed. In the county, rides leave from Marietta and Landisville. Since its inception, the program has served more than 350 teens who have ridden more than 368,000 miles.

tered outdoor adventure that fosters growth, character and leadership in teens through biking and teamwork,” Al said. “Teens learn essential life skills - from leadership and teamwork to money management and healthy living - all under the guidance of dedicated mentors who help them transition into adulthood with integrity and confidence.”

Lifecycles is open to any teens in Lancaster County. The program runs from April through October. For more information, visit www .lifecyclesteam.org.

Girl Scout troops seek members

The Elizabethtown/Donegal Girl Scouts organization is seeking new members. With a mission to build girls of courage, confidence and character, the Girl Scouts of the United States of America seeks to provide a safe and supportive environment where young girls can thrive. The organization was founded in 1912 by Juliette Gordon Low.

Locally, the Elizabethtown/ Donegal Girl Scouts enables girls to develop life skills, engage in community service and explore their interests. Troops in the Elizabethtown/Donegal area are led by volunteers who are committed to fostering a sense of leadership and self-assurance in each girl. From outdoor adventures and STEM activities to arts and crafts, the Girl Scouts program offers a diverse range of experiences.

Through a variety of hands-on activities, girls can earn badges that recognize their achievements in areas like camping skills, first aid, entrepreneurship and environmental stewardship. The Girl Scouts also emphasizes the importance of community involvement, encouraging members to take part in service projects that make a positive impact on their neighborhoods.

In addition to the skills they acquire, Girl Scouts build friendships with their peers. For many girls, the bonds they form with fellow Scouts become lifelong friendships.

The Elizabethtown/Donegal Girl Scouts welcome girls from kindergarten through high school. The program is divided into different levels, each tailored to the developmental stage of the girls:

Daisies, open to girls in kindergarten and first grade, start their Girl Scouting journey with activ -

ities that introduce them to the values of friendship, teamwork and respect.

Brownies, for girls in second and third grades, dive deeper into exploring their interests and earning badges, all while enjoying outdoor adventures and creative projects.

At the Junior Girl Scout level for fourth- and fifth-graders, girls begin to take on more leadership roles within their troop, planning activities and working on community service projects.

Cadettes, for girls in sixth through eighth grades, focus on building their leadership skills and exploring more complex topics, such as financial literacy, science and technology.

Senior Scouts, for girls in ninth and 10th grades, and Ambassadors, for 11th- and 12th-graders, offers opportunities for girls to take on significant leadership responsibilities, mentor younger

girls and work on projects that can lead to earning the Girl Scout Gold Award.

For more information, visit www.gshpa.org, contact local troop leaders at gsleader16@

gmail.com or search for “Elizabethtown/Donegal Girl Scouts” on Facebook. Financial assistance is available to ensure that every girl can participate. Adult volunteers are sought.
