Let’s Go Camping! A Safer Way To Travel Is Trending can be achieved without “glamping,” as RVing is sometimes called. ELANCO-area residents and hiking buddies Laura Zimmerman and Jessica Zimmerman, who are related through Laura’s dad and Jessica’s grandmother, do not hesitate to hit the trail for as long as 10 days with up to 35 pounds of clothes, food, water and other supplies, including a tent, on their backs. They can cover as much as 10 miles per day, and they have camped in places like the Quehanna Trail in Elk County, the Pine Creek Rail Trail in Tioga

Led by instructor Aaron Adams (left), students from the Mount Joy campus of the Lancaster County Career & Technology Center recently constructed a storage pole barn for Donegal Youth Soccer.
LCCTC Students Construct Pole Barn the construction site and measuring out a length while his classmates offered opinions and advice. He said that he had worked on small construction projects before coming to the LCCTC, but he had never worked on something this large before. He said that his favorite part of the project was breaking through the parking lot blacktop and pouring the concrete for the corner posts of the barn. “It’s really cool to know that you’re building something that is going to be here for a long time something that a lot of people will use over the years,” Javan said. Brian Engle, the fields coordinator from Donegal Youth Soccer, explained that the new shed will house all the materials that the group uses during meets such as jerseys, line equipment and goals. “The LCCTC had built a small shed for us on the same location. Over the years, we outgrew that shed and then some,” Engle said. “I really look forward to having a large, secure place to store our material, and we really appreciate all of the work from the (LCCTC) students.”
LCCD Announces Scholarship Winners The Lancaster County Conservation District (LCCD) recently announced four Ann Brown Memorial Scholarship winners. These students have demonstrated a keen interest in using their college studies to make a difference in the future health of the natural environment. Nathan B. Brubaker, a senior at Donegal High School, and Harrison Booth, a senior at Conestoga Valley High School, each received a $2,000 scholarship.

campus of the Lancaster County Career & Technology Center (LCCTC) recently had an opportunity to take part in a hands-on learning project by constructing a storage pole barn for Donegal Youth Soccer. About 15 students in the Introduction to Construction Careers program, wearing blue safety helmets and masks, constructed the large storage shed in an area located adjacent to the soccer field in Cove Outlook Park on Old Market Street. The project was meant to be done in the spring, but the pandemic shutdown hit before construction could begin. The students were supervised by their instructor, Aaron Adams. “The students in this class are here to learn the basic skills of a variety of construction careers. So a project like this one with a variety of necessary skills is absolutely perfect for them,” Adams said, noting that the location of the site, which is situated across the street from the Mount Joy campus, was also ideal for the students. The LCCTC occasionally works
with local groups to provide labor for construction and improvement projects. “The students get on-site work experience, and we are able to save some local organizations some expenses,” Adams said. Adams explained to the students how to install structural timbers, and the students were responsible for making measurements, sawing boards to length and screwing the struts in place. Gage Watt, an LCCTC junior from Manheim Central High School, made a straight chalk line to mark positions for the coming cut lumber. He said that he was hoping to become a local construction worker after high school. “I came to the (LCCTC) for the hands-on learning and here we are,” Gage said, holding up a construction tape measure. “Working out here is great,” said LCCTC student Javan Vargas, a junior from Manheim Central School District. “We’ve been in school for two weeks and we are already out here building a 24-foot barn.” Javan was kneeling on a piece of lumber in the parking lot adjacent to

The pandemic has resulted in a significant increase in families looking into and plunging into camping during the summer of 2020. For fall, that trend does not seem to be slowing much, and fall weather is often ideal for camping activities. Scot Ash, general manager of Shady Maple RV in East Earl, has seen a 50% increase in sales over 2019, and he said that the majority of those sales involved first-time buyers. “RVing is an alternative way to travel that allows families to social See Camping pg 7 distance while traveling and while camping,” said Ash, who pointed out that campers have their own beds, baths, and cooking and eating facilities traveling with them. “It keeps the family unit together,” said Ash. for their first win, but are proving they have what it takes to create success on both ends of the field. In a 3-2, nonleague loss to Daniel Boone last Friday, Donegal held the early lead thanks to goals by Sophia Floyd and Hannah Dunn, but in a late-game scoring blitz, Daniel Boone netted a trio of goals to pull ahead. On October 23, ELCO struck first in Donegal’s season opener, which concluded as a 2-1 loss for the Indians. The hosting Raiders tallied the first mark on the scoreboard midway through the first half. The Indians retaliated in the second when Dunn found the netting, but with five minutes left on the clock, ELCO obtained the go-ahead goal. Indians keeper Rena Rankin held her own in both contests faced by a barrage of 19 shots from Daniel Boone and 15 from ELCO to accrue a staggering 29 saves. TENNIS Already deep into their regular season, Donegal girls’ tennis currently holds a 2-5 record after last week’s one-win, two-loss result. The week ended with 7-0 and 6-0 losses to Elizabethtown and Hempfield respectively, but on Monday, the Indians took down the Lebanon Cedars in a 7-0 sweep of their own. Leading the squad in singles play, Ellen Zern picked up her third win at No. 1 singles and Aubrey Jones registered her fourth victory at No. 2 during the Lebanon match. In doubles action, Donegal duo Emma Pisco and Kensington Edmond lead the team in successes, tallying four so far this season after refusing to surrender a game in their 8-0 performance at Lebanon. Earlier in the season, the Indians succumbed to Manheim Central (6-1), Cocalico (4-3), and Lampeter-Strasburg (7-0), but made quick work of the Spartans in a 7-0 triumph during a trip to Garden Spot.

opponent and set the stage for further improvement throughout the fall.” CROSS COUNTRY Domination would be an understatement of the Donegal cross country performance last Thursday at the season opening meet against Cocalico and Columbia. In addition to picking up team wins over both the Eagles and the Crimson Tide, Donegal boys accounted for all but one of the top dozen run times in the meet. Senior Brock Overlander blazed the trail with a 17:49, with teammates Hunter Gehman (17:52), Logan Fry (17:56), Samuel Rothstein (18:20), John Spackman (18:43), and Noah Hinkle (19:14), following in rapid succession. Cocalico was able to slip in a runner in seventh, but then it was all Indians again as Brandon Marcelo (19:44), Ethan Steck (19:47), Zachary Karpel (19:48), Dylan Lenhart (20:30), and Braden Bistline (20:40) accounted for the next five to cross. The girls’ results brought just as much to celebrate, easily claiming two team triumphs, with Myra Naqvi’s time of 21:07 the best of the night, followed by fellow Donegal harriers Amanda Fry (21:21), Hadley Shoaf (21:56), Kendall Finicle (22:44), and Emma Myers (22:57) to lock up the top five spots. Lantern Tour To Highlight Local History, Lore BY FRANCINE FULTON
Participants will experience life as it was in the early 1800s when Rivertown Theatre Productions presents Columbia’s Haunted Lantern Tour, themed “Authentic Illusions.” The annual event will take place on Friday, Oct. 16; Sunday, Oct. 18; Friday, Oct. 23; and Saturday, Oct. 24. Tours will run every half hour beginning at 6:30 p.m., with the final tour stepping off at 9:30 p.m. on Oct. 16, 23 and 24 and 8 p.m. on Oct. 18. Returning to directing the tour again this year are Sara Mimnall and Rebecca Wright, who noted that the event was expanded to two weekends in 2020. “Last year, we had 300 to 350 and we sold out and we had to turn people away,”
Wright explained. “That’s why we expanded it. We expect up to 500 people this year.” Due to COVID-19, safety precautions will be in place. “It will be a little different this year,” said Mimnall. “We are asking our tour groups to all wear masks. They will have to remain 6 feet away from our tour guides at all times. We are limiting our groups to 20 people each.” “Actors will not be wearing masks, which is why they have to stay 6 feet away from the tour groups,” she added. “With voices muffled (by a mask), they can’t perform a specific character.” The tour, led by actors from the nonprofit theater company, will begin and end at the Loyal Order of Moose, 223 Locust St., Columbia, and will
venture down Locust and Second streets guided by lantern light. A trolley ride will also be part of the tour, and there will be an indoor location - the historic Samuel Miller mansion, which is now home to Art Printing Company at 131 Locust St. The characters being portrayed on the tour will include both fictional and real-life characters. For example, this year visitors will meet the original owners of the First National Bank of Columbia at the corner of Second and Locust streets. “Each of these characters performs as if they are living in the moment of the time period they were from,” Wright explained. Wright pointed out that actors on the tour are all volunteers and are of varying
ages. “Our youngest actor is 6, and then we have some older folks that work with us,” she said. “They also span counties - York, Lancaster and Lebanon.” Preparation for the event begins in January. “Sara and I start preparing at the very beginning of the year. Scriptwriting takes us to May, and we do auditions in June,” said Wright, noting that rehearsals start in July. “We rehearse once a week and, when it’s closer, two or three times a week. We walk the tour the whole way through. It would be impossible if we did not have the support system of our actors and their families.” Organizers said the tour is a fun, interesting way to the learn about the local

The African American Historical Society of South Central Pennsylvania and the Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society are partnering to offer an Underground Railroad Learning Tour in Columbia on Saturday, Oct. 10, from 9 a.m. until noon. Guests will gather at the Columbia Crossing River Trails Center, 41 Walnut St., Columbia. The experience will feature presentations in outdoor covered spaces as well as guided walking tours in small groups. The walking tour will
include an option to take in the new Underground Railroad exhibit at the Columbia Historic Preservation Society museum on North Second Street. Columbia is one of the earliest places where the term Underground Railroad was commonly used to describe a network supporting formerly enslaved African Americans journeying to new lives. Stephen Smith and William Whipper, successful black entrepreneurs in Columbia, provided major financial
assistance and logistical leadership that made the town a key Underground Railroad gateway to destinations north and east. Recently uncovered written evidence reveals active participation in the Underground Railroad by some nearby Mennonites. A face covering is required. The tour will be held rain or shine. There is a cost per person. Advance registration is required by Wednesday, Oct. 7. Readers may register by visiting www.bit.ly/URTour or calling 717-393-9745.

Englerth noted that Family First Health Columbia Dental Center has received strong support from the community, including CHI St. Joseph Children’s Health, which made a major donation of equipment to outfit the treatment rooms. The Pennsylvania Department of Health also provided funds through a primary care grant to support the launch of the site. Additionally, the Family First Health dental team has partnered with the Columbia School District to connect students and their families to the dental center. Visits to the schools to provide preventive care are also slated. “We welcome you to our site and are proud to be in this community, improving the health of Columbia residents for decades to come,” Englerth remarked. The dental center complements the existing Family First Health Medical Center, which is located nearby at 369 Locust St., Columbia, and offers primary medical

internship at Yellowstone and worked as a park ranger in Caledonia State Park. She was introduced to a book called “Roughing It Easy” by Diane Thomas, where she learned how to make a stove from a tuna can, corrugated paper, and paraffin and to cook eggs and bacon in a paper sack. “You can cook cheaply over the fire,” said Kim, who currently cooks meals in foil pouches and mixes up pancake batter before leaving home so it’s ready to pour at the campsite. “ We make breakfast burritos so we don’t need utensils,” said Kim, who noted that the smoky smell of a campfire is a delight to her. “There’s something about … being in the outdoors and smelling the fire,” she said. “I like the smell.” New Holland resident Steve Loewen bought his “toy hauler” camper several years ago and converted the area where motorcycles would be stored into a bed. His wheelchair glides easily up the ramp originally intended for all-terrain vehicles. “I’m not your regular camper,” said Loewen. “I go camping because … I have all my (equipment) with me.” Loewen noted that 90% of his camping expeditions are tied to his love of car racing. He also enjoys the relationships he has developed with other race fans. “I see the same people every year, because we reserve the same (camp sites).” For those who are not sure camping is for them, Shady Maple RV offers rentals, starting with popup campers and ranging to motorhomes. “Demand for rentals went up (this year),” said rental specialist Lynnette Morris. “The majority of rentals were out every weekend this year,” she noted, adding that some days she has turned away more than 20 people.

County, and Jessica’s favorite, Black Forest Trail in Lycoming County. The young women often camp well into the fall and as early as April, braving temperatures that can drop into the teens. Laura noted that to keep the food supplies light, they take along a lot of pasta and rice, and they carry dried beef. Laura uses a dehydrator to prepare food ahead for them to take along. Jessica noted that enjoying the journey in nature is a focus of the hiking trips. “When I am out backpacking, it would be a disappointment if I went home without seeing any wildlife,” said Jessica, who notes she is especially on the lookout for rattlesnakes and copperhead snakes, but she has also seen bear, elk, fishers (which are similar to weasels or minks), foxes, coyotes, elk, deer, and flying squirrels. “You didn’t mention porcupines,” added Laura. Jessica relayed that during a hike through Harvey Winter State Park, a bear foraged ahead of them, continually stopping to look back before disappearing into the brush. She also recalled stepping on a rattlesnake on the Quehanna Trail. Because it was early morning and cold, the snake was sluggish. Kim Pierce and her husband, Gene, of Terre Hill, graduated from a tent to a hybrid camper a few years ago, but she still prefers cooking over an outdoor fire to using the stove in her camper. The couple’s first date was a backpacking outing on the Presidential Range in New Hampshire. “(After) we had a family, we camped at state parks in tents,” said Kim, who noted she loves her hybrid because the canvas reminds her of tenting. Kim honed her campfire skills when she did an

Based on reviews from dozens of FIA volunteers, donors, and aid recipients, Friends In Action International (FIA) has been named a 2020 Top-Rated Nonprofit by GreatNonprofits, an organization that allows people to rate more than 1.6 million charities and nonprofit organizations. Headquartered in Middletown, FIA supports mission work in areas of limited infrastructure worldwide by using construction projects and other practical service to speed the message of the Gospel to people who have never heard about Jesus Christ. FIA executive director Tim Johnston said that FIA’s efforts have included providing clean water to more than 1,000 refugees of terrorism in West Africa, COVID-19 relief aid in remote areas of Bolivia, rebuilding efforts to the Rama Cay people of Nicaragua, cyclone relief to the NiVan villagers of Vanuatu, and life-skills training and educational support in Papua New Guinea and Moldova. FIA has created opportunities for more than 215,000 people to hear the Gospel. Readers who would like to learn more about Friends In Action can participate in one of the events FIA is hosting this fall to raise awareness and funds for Christian mission outreaches. To better adhere to CDC guidelines for social distancing, FIA will host two mission banquets this year. The first will take place on Friday, Oct. 30, at Best Western Premier The Central
Market Flip style projects, which were created by artisans who repurposed leftovers from mission construction projects into usable new pieces. Hot dogs, baked goods, and beverages will also be available for purchase. All proceeds will go toward the acquisition of a skid steer to assist in loading trucks and supplies for infrastructure projects. Further information is available by contacting Paul
Brosey at 717-629-7328 or paulbrosey@fiaintl.org. In the case of rain, the sale will be held inside the warehouse located on the property. In addition to GreatNonprofits’ recognition, FIA has received a platinum rating from GuideStar, known as the highest level of transparency offered to nonprofits. “Even though we are a fairly young company, we have over 75 years’ combined experience. Also, being local gives us advantages.” Shetter noted that diversity of services is another reason for the company’s rapid growth. Sheetz recently announced that Sheetz For the Kidz, an employee-driven charity supporting underprivileged children, raised a record-setting $839,460 during its annual month of in-store fundraising in July. This is an increase of $205,391 from last year’s donation. The current pandemic has created a coin shortage in the U.S., which has directly impacted Sheetz. As a result, during July customers had the option to donate the extra change that they would normally receive on a transaction to Sheetz For the Kidz. Each Sheetz store then rang these donations through the register and directed them to the charity. With 100% of all donations directly supporting local children, Sheetz For the Kidz provides children in need the opportunity to celebrate the holidays with gifts such as new toys, clothes and other basic needs. Working with the Salvation Army to receive wish lists from local families, Sheetz employees shop for and wrap gifts and host holiday parties for the children and their families. Last year, more than $1.7 million was distributed, making the holiday season brighter for more than 9,700 children in the six states where Sheetz operates. In partnership with MakeA-Wish, funds raised during the campaign also sponsor wishes of children with lifethreatening medical conditions. The charity sponsors one child per Sheetz operating district, totaling 55 children this year. Furthermore, to broaden

Local Contractors Recognized For Safety Performance The Keystone Chapter of Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) announced the recipients of its 2020 Safety Training & Evaluation Process (STEP) Awards and recognized its 2020 OSHA Partners on Sept. 15 in celebration of National Safety Week. Representatives from several ABC Keystone member companies virtually attended the ABC Keystone Safety Awards presented by Cohen Seglias Pallas Greenhall & Furman and had the opportunity to hear directly from Dale Glacken, compliance assistance specialist, Harrisburg area office, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). The anchor of ABC’s Safety Awards program is a national model called STEP. STEP is a safety benchmarking and improvement tool that is designed to improve safety performance among construction industry participants regardless of company size or type of work. The goal of the program is to provide an organized approach to analyze and further develop a company’s safety and loss prevention. Participating companies score their level of achievement for each component on a weighted point scale and document their incident rates (total recordable incident rate - TRIR - and experience modification rate - EMR). Companies receive a recognition level of Diamond, Platinum, Gold, Silver, Bronze or Participant based on this data.
In the 2020 STEP Awards, recipients are as follows. Wickersham Construction and Engineering Inc., Lancaster, received Platinum level recognition. leader, den leader, senior patrol leader and currently quartermaster. His peers elected him to the Order of the Arrow. For his Eagle Scout Project, Logan planted 130 trees with plastic protective sleeves in the Conewago Creek watershed for the Tri-County Conewago Creek Association. Prior to planting, he cleared the area of brush and dug up the tree saplings from the nursery to be used in his project. The trees will help to prevent erosion of the stream bank and cleanse the water of pollutants. Logan, 17, is the son of Kay and Craig Livelsberger of Mount Joy. A senior at Donegal High School, Logan plans to pursue a degree in cybersecurity and operations.
