Mount Joy Rotary To Offer Free Shredding Event BY FRANCINE FULTON

BY FRANCINE FULTON

T

he Rotary Club of Mount Joy invites community members to keep their identities safe by bringing their personal papers to its fourth annual shredding event on Saturday, Oct. 24, at the Milanof-Schock Library, 1184 Anderson Ferry Road, Mount Joy. The service is free, but cash donations for the Mount Joy Borough Christmas tree lights and ornament fund will be received at the event. This year’s shredding event, postponed from April, has been adjusted because of COVID-19. Everyone is being asked not to place their shreddable items in plastic totes or boxes that need to be returned. “To maintain safe social distancing, (attendees should) put papers for shredding into disposable paper or cardboard containers and place them into their car’s trunk or truck’s back storage area,” explained event chairman Ron Carpenter. “The Rotary volunteers will remove your items from the storage compartment to take to the shredding vehicle (from Tri-State Shredding). It will be impractical to return containers this year.” Items that should be shredded include bank statements, copies of birth certificates, canceled and voided checks and credit card bills. “Once you are finished with your personal, private papers, you need to shred them because identity theft is a real possibility,” advised Rotary public relations director Barbara Basile, who is also the library director. “(This includes) loan documents, old tax (returns), paperwork from an

Participants will experience life as it was in the early 1800s when Rivertown Theatre Productions presents Columbia’s Haunted Lantern Tour, themed “Authentic Illusions.” The annual event will take place on Friday, Oct. 16; Sunday, Oct. 18; Friday, Oct. 23; and Saturday, Oct. 24. Tours will run every half hour beginning at 6:30 p.m., with the final tour stepping off at 9:30 p.m. on Oct. 16, 23 and 24 and 8 p.m. on Oct. 18. Returning to directing the tour again this year are Sara Mimnall and Rebecca Wright, who noted that the event was expanded to two weekends in 2020. “Last year, we had 300 to 350 and we sold out and we had to turn people away,” Wright explained. “That’s why we expanded it. We expect up to 500 people this year.” Due to COVID-19, safety precautions will be in place. “It will be a See Lantern Tour pg 2

INSIDE THIS ISSUE estate and passports that are out of date.” Hosting a free shredding event for the community is just one activity of the Mounty Joy Rotary Club. The club developed and maintains Rotary Park in Mount Joy and conducts a Student of the Month program. It also operates a fundraising fry wagon, which offers homemade french fries, as well as hot dogs. In May, club members distributed free food from the fry wagon in the community, also collecting donations for the Mount Joy Food Bank. “We do a lot of volunteer work

and support both local and international causes,” Basile pointed out, noting that the club helped fund the library’s new roof and recently made a donation to the Rainbow’s End Youth Center for student backpacks. The club meets on Tuesdays at 12:15 p.m. at The Gathering Place, 6 Pine St., Mount Joy. An alternate meeting is offered at 5 p.m. on Thursdays at Twisted Bine, 93 E. Main St., Mount Joy. “We share a meal together, we have a lot of conversation and we talk about upcoming events,” said Basile. “ We frequently have a speaker. A past speaker was about

diversification in business to cope with the COVID crisis.” The club currently has between 25 and 40 active members. “Those who want to belong to a civic organization are encouraged to join our club,” Basile said. “(Members) are dedicated to making Mount Joy the best it possibly can be.” For more information about the club or any of its projects, readers may visit www.facebook.com/mountjoyrotary or www.mountjoyrotary.org. Those interested in becoming a club member should contact Greg Sallade at 717-648-0510.

little different this year,” said Mimnall. “We are asking our tour groups to all wear masks. They will have to remain 6 feet away from our tour guides at all times. We are limiting our groups to 20 people each.” “Actors will not be wearing masks, which is why they have to stay 6 feet away from the tour groups,” she added. “With voices muffled (by a mask), they can’t perform a specific character.” The tour, led by actors from the nonprofit theater company, will begin and end at the Loyal Order of Moose, 223 Locust St., Columbia, and will venture down Locust and Second streets guided by lantern light. A trolley ride will also be part of the tour, and there will be an indoor location the historic Samuel Miller mansion, which is now home to Art Printing Company at 131 Locust St. The characters being portrayed on the tour will include both fictional and

real-life characters. For example, this year visitors will meet the original owners of the First National Bank of Columbia at the corner of Second and Locust streets. “Each of these characters performs as if they are living in the moment of the time period they were from,” Wright explained. Wright pointed out that actors on the tour are all volunteers and are of varying ages. “Our youngest actor is 6, and then we have some older folks that work with us,” she said. “They also span counties - York, Lancaster and Lebanon.” Preparation for the event begins in January. “Sara and I start preparing at the very beginning of the year. Scriptwriting takes us to May, and we do auditions in June,” said Wright, noting that rehearsals start in July. “We rehearse once a week and, when it’s closer, two or three times a week. We walk the tour the whole way

It would be impossible if we did not have the support system of our actors and their families.” Organizers said the tour is a fun, interesting way to the learn about the local community. “Anybody would find this tour entertaining. We do cover some local history as far as Columbia is concerned, (but) the town’s history is

only one part,” Wright said. “There is comedy and drama. (The tour) is something we are both definitely proud of.” For more information about the tour and to reserve a spot, readers may call Holly at 717-587-5368. More details are available at www.columbiahlt.com and www.facebook.com /ColumbiaHLT.

LMHS Takes “Kindergarten” (The Play) Outdoors BY ANN MEAD ASH

I Timothy 4:12 reads, “Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young.” Isabella Astuto, Lancaster Mennonite High School (LMHS) senior and a member of the cast of the school’s upcoming production of “All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten,” noted a main message of the play is to not disregard the knowledge of youths. “Just because children are younger, (that) doesn’t mean there aren’t also things that kids can experience that are worthwhile to learn and know,” she said, adding that a lot of the vignettes in the play reflect that theme. “Kindergarten,” based on Robert Fulghum’s books, examines the profound in everyday life. The show will be staged outside at the school, 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, Oct. 15, 16, and 17, at 6:30 p.m. and on Sunday, Oct. 18, at 3 p.m. Attendees should bring lawn chairs and blankets. Play director Dean Sauder said that he chose the show for several reasons, including

having produced it before, the set’s easy adaptation to an outdoor setting, and its compatibility with social distancing the ensemble cast. The series of vignettes includes characters such as a shy little boy who insists on playing “pig” in his class production of “Cinderella,” a man whose dream of flying carries him over Los Angeles in a lawn chair buoyed by weather balloons, a “mother of the bride” who has staged a perfect wedding until fate arrives, and a modern-day Greek philosopher who finds the meaning of life in a piece of a broken mirror from World War II. Because of his familiarity with the show, Sauder has encouraged the students to bring their own ideas to the production. “I am enjoying watching them create,” he noted. In response, the students are enjoying the fun and rising to the challenges of “Kindergarten.” Josiah Esch noted that the stories are funny, especially one called “The Stuff in the Sink,” which he said is his favorite because of the exaggerated humor. Isabella noted that although the piece is silly, it also points

out the value in each person’s experience. Cast member Megan Esch said that she sees value the individual vignettes. “They each have a purpose and teach lessons,” she said, noting that her favorite is “Problems and Inconveniences,” which features an older person looking back on irrational outbursts of the past. “(The person now) realizes the difference between a problem and an inconvenience,” she shared. more combined wins garnered across two meets, the clubs move to 7-0 and currently sit atop Section Two rankings. Thursday it was Manheim Central, Annville-Cleona, and Lancaster Catholic that were handed losses by the Indian harriers. Donegal pacesetter Myra Naqvi (20:27) came in second, Amanda Fry (20:35) third, Hadley Shoaf (21:12) sixth, Rachel Fernald (21:41) eighth, and Kendall Finicle (21:58) ninth. A similar storyline played out for the boys, and though the top time was not held by a Donegal harrier, team depth awarded the Indians wins over all three opponents. Donegal’s top time went to third-place Brock Overland (17:22), followed by Hunter Gehman (17:26) in fourth. Slots six and seven went to Logan Fry (17:31) and Sam Rothstein (17:35), and another Donegal duo, John Spackman (18:03) and Noah Hinkle (18:11), clinched ninth and tenth. All the Indians’ times at Annville were personal bests for this season, and despite injury affecting a few athletes, head coach Philip Koser is pleased with what he’s seeing. “This was a meet that we wanted to focus on because of the competition and slightly faster course,” Koser explained. In Monday’s home meet, DHS runners left behind competitors from Northern Lebanon and Octorara, and displayed seven of the top ten girls’ times. Naqvi (21:48), A. Fry (22:23), and Shoaf (22:32) went one, two, three. Finicle crossed in fifth (23:59), and Fernald, Olivia Zell, and Rayahna Clerico captured spots seven, eight, and ten. For the boys, Overland broke the line first with a 17:36 time, followed by Gehman’s 18:09. L. Fry (18:30), and Rothstein (18:35), went back-to-back at fourth and fifth, and Hinkel (19:40) crossed eighth giving Donegal five times in the top ten. BOYS’ SOCCER Split results last week evenly increased Donegal’s record on both sides, providing a 2-2 mark as the calendar flipped into October. Thursday’s trip to Cocalico resulted in a 4-2 loss for the Indians, who initially went down by two goals, but fired back to tie things up before the midway break. Donegal striker Tye White, and midfielder Michael Linebarger, netted the Indian goals two minutes apart midway through the first half, and the contest was still anyone’s game, 2-2, headed into the second. Unfortunately, the Eagles had

another one-two punch, notching goals at the 52- and 56minute marks and rode out the remainder of the clock for the win. On Tuesday, sophomore Brody Bonham hammered in his first two goals of the season in a 4-1 Donegal triumph over Solanco. Joseph Turbedsky was credited with two assists, and a pair of own goals deflected off the Mules due to relentless pressure from the Indian attack. GIRLS’ SOCCER Girls’ soccer gained momentum early last week with a 2-1 victory over Solanco, but ended the week knocked back by an 8-1 loss to Cocalico. The Indians kept things tight Thursday in the first half against the Eagles, with a goal from Lily Stehman, assisted by Hayley Bauer. The game was knotted at 1-1 at the half, but things came unglued for Donegal in the second half as the Eagles registered 19 total shots on goal, netting seven. DHS had a much better night in Tuesday’s 2-1 win when center

midfielder, Sophia Floyd, notched the first goal of the contest after 16 minutes. Solanco didn’t go down easily and tied it up just before the half. The contest looked destined for overtime, but with only 90 seconds left to play, Donegal freshman Reagan Cook, assisted by Hannah Dunn, knocked in the game-winner. FIELD HOCKEY Field hockey picked up an early week win over Elizabethtown (3-2) before facing a pair of losses to Manheim Central (3-1) and Ephrata (5-0) to end last week. Gabby Blake, Emma Miller, and Morgan Mullhausen each notched a goal in Donegal’s win over Elizabethtown Monday, Sept. 28. Madison Leety picked up her third goal of the season as the lone Donegal scorer in the Manheim Central loss. Donegal keeper CC Emswiler faced a barrage of 15 shots on goal from the Ephrata attack on Friday, and managed to scoop up 10 saves in the loss.
