Girl Scouts are giving back
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Three girls in Girl Scout Troop 70417 have made the world a better place by earning the highest awards for their level of Girl Scouts. Sophia Kretzing has earned her Bronze Award, and both Keeli Adams and Mya Brouse have earned their Silver Awards.
Sophia, the daughter of Keith and Erika Kretzing of Mount Joy, is an eighth-grader at Elizabethtown Area Middle School. “I built a Little Free Library for the community,” Sophia explained. “It is located at the GEARS center on Poplar Street. I also held a book drive to fill the library when we opened it.”
Sophia has been a Girl Scout for seven years and is currently a Cadette, but she earned the Bronze Award as a Junior Girl Scout. The Bronze Award is the highest award Junior Girl Scouts - members in grades four and five - can earn. “I wanted to do my Bronze Award to give me a chance to work on my leadership skills,” Sophia shared. “I also enjoy helping the community, and I think a library is a great way to do that.”
Keeli and Mya worked together to earn their Silver Award, the highest award available for Cadette Girl Scouts - those in sixth through eighth grades.
“We built benches that convert into tables and placed them at the entrance of Conewago Trail so that when people were finished with their bike ride, walk, etc., they had a place to rest or enjoy a snack,” Keeli said of the project she and Mya completed in early summer 2023.
Keeli, the daughter of Brandon and Brianne Adams of
Elizabethtown, is a sophomore at Elizabethtown Area High School. She’s been a Girl Scout for eight years, and she encourages other girls to strive for their level’s highest award, which includes the Girl Scout Gold Award for girls in high school.
“It’s a great way to find things that could be improved or that would benefit your community, and you feel very accomplished once you earn the award,” she said.
Mya revealed that getting
started on the project with Keeli required a bit of brainstorming about needs in their community.
“We felt that the trailhead needed a resting place, as there was a wide area by the parking but nowhere to sit,” she said.
“Next, we came up with a plan of action that started by contacting various local businesses and asking if they could donate the needed supplies - wood, nails, glue, stain, etc.”
The girls then spent a week working in Keeli’s grandfather’s

Describing herself, Hazel Deming of Maytown said, “I am a certified history buff!” She’s not kidding. The nonagenarian, who is affectionately known as “Mickey” in the community, will showcase her extensive background in history when she presents a program at the Maytown Historical Society. Her presentation will focus on the role of the Underground Railroad in Pennsylvania and will take place at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 17, at the East Donegal Township Municipal Building, 190 Rock Point Road, Marietta.
“I grew up in Maytown, graduated from East Donegal High School, Elizabethtown College
with a bachelor’s in education and Temple University with a master’s in education,” Deming shared. She taught fifth grade for 13 years in Montgomery County and then indulged her love of history by volunteering. “Another eight years were spent as a volunteer National Park Service docent at Independence

Part of the mission of Reich’s Evangelical Congregational Church focuses on connecting with the community. The church will fulfill that goal with a free concert featuring the Mark Dubbeld Family. The concert will be held at the church, 338 Stackstown Road, Marietta, at 6 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 13.
“We want to bless people and give people the opportunity to gather together, to worship together and to be encouraged
together,” said pastor Dan Blank. “We want to minister to our community.”
The church has hosted concerts in the past, but nothing on the scale of this group, Blank said. The Mark Dubbeld Family comprises father Mark, mother Janene, daughter Elena and son Britton. The group has been featured on the “Gospel Greats” radio program, has performed at Dollywood and has participated in the National Quartet Convention in Pigeon Forge, Tenn. Lantern Tour will bring history to life
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
When Rivertown Theatre Productions presents its annual Haunted Lantern Tour, expect a mix of history and spookiness. “This year’s tour is very unique in the fact that it’s not as lighthearted and lively as our themes have been in the past,” said Sara Mimnall, owner of Rivertown Theatre Productions and producer and director of the tour. “While there are moments of comedic relief, the tour has a very mournful vibe.”
The tour, called “The Afflicted,” will be offered on Fridays, Oct. 18 and 25; Saturdays, Oct. 19 and 26; and Sunday, Oct. 20. Tours will run every half hour beginning at 6:30 p.m. with the final tour stepping off at 9:30 p.m. on Fridays and
Saturdays and 8 p.m. on Sundays. Attendees will meet at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 616 Locust St., Columbia, and will travel through Mount Bethel Cemetery.
“The title and theme of this year’s tour, ‘The Afflicted,’ really encapsulates all of the personalities and stories our guests will encounter this year,” shared Mimnall, who writes an original script for each year’s tour. “Attendees will be introduced to characters whose lives were shaped by history’s cruel whims. ... We really dive deep into the core of human emotion, exploring the agonies of love, loss, longing and grief.” The production will feature 26 actors who portray
various characters.
The one-hour walking tour will immerse people in an otherworldly realm, she said. “The cast does a phenomenal job of portraying an array of characters sharing the tragedies of their past lives that bind them to our tangible world,” Mimnall explained. “These vividly rendered encounters weave history with the supernatural, challenging your perception of life and death, making this tour the perfect combination of historical education and spooky entertainment.” Mimnall emphasized that the tour is not a horror attraction. Instead, it is focused on history. “Patrons are guided through the
winding pathways of Mount Bethel Cemetery, guided by lantern light,” she explained. “With the assistance of the costumed actors who portray ghosts from the past, attendees are able to experience history as if it’s taking place right in that very moment. It’s a great experience for avid theatregoers, history buffs, lovers of all things spooky, and even those that are just looking to experience something new. I strongly encourage everyone to attend Columbia’s Haunted Lantern Tour at least once. We change the
theme of the performance every year, incorporating an original script, new characters and a fresh storyline, so returning patrons can enjoy a unique experience every time they participate.”
This year’s event particularly stands out, she said. “While every tour is unique in its own way, the rarity of the way this tour is presented is truly one-of-a-kind,” she shared. “We certainly have never presented a production quite like this.”

“We loaded up the benches in a truck and met two park and recreation employees to set them up,” Mya recalled. “We spent about 50 hours on the project, from brainstorming to setting up at the trail.”
Mya is the daughter of Dennis and Maria Brouse of Mount Joy. She is a sophomore at Donegal High School. She’s been a Girl Scout since she was in kindergarten, and, like both Sophia and Keeli, she said she plans to work on her Gold Award next.
“As a Girl Scout, one of our core values is giving back to the community,” she remarked. “I plan to find a project that incorporates helping animals. I would like to be a veterinarian as a future career.”
All three girls are part of the Elizabethtown/Donegal Service Unit of Girl Scouts, and their troop is led by Tracy Adams and Brianne Adams. The girls encourage anyone who is interested to consider joining Girl Scouts, noting that the program provides opportunities to hone leadership skills and take positive risks.
“I love that we are always learning new things and going to new places,” Sophia said, and Mya added that she enjoys the opportunities Girl Scouts has given her to grow in confidence.

After returning to Lancaster County in retirement, she saw an ad encouraging people to audition for the Lancaster County Speakers Bureau. “I already had several subjects available that I had used for an adult education group I belonged to in Montgomery County, so I auditioned and was accepted for membership,” she shared. “The aim of the bureau was to present free educational programs
to organizations in need of speakers. After more than 50 years of providing programs, the bureau disbanded several years ago.”
While she was searching for a topic for a Speakers Bureau program, Deming heard Fergus Bordewich speak about his book, “Bound for Canaan,” which is about the Underground Railroad.
“I was hooked!” she remarked. “I read every book about the ‘railroad’ I could find and developed not only a short program but a three-hour course as well, which I presented at
several retirement communities.”
She’s looking forward to sharing her knowledge of the Underground Railroad at the historical society meeting, and she hopes the community will continue to support the mission of the society.
“We must never forget our past,” she said. “Our world would not be as rich or interesting without history, and historical societies like the Maytown Historical Society are doing a wonderful job of preserving our past.”

Staying sharp: Brain-boosting tips Seniors can swim their way to improved health

Cognitive decline is a concern for many adults as they get older. Memory loss and trouble processing ideas can sometimes be a side effect of aging, as Everyday Health says the brain changes in size and structure as a person gets older. The changes can affect how well the brain works over time. Furthermore, illnesses affecting the brain, such as Alzheimer’s disease, may start showing their symptoms in people who have reached their mid-60s, says the National Institute on Aging.
Older adults who want to boost their cognitive health may consider a few strategies.
Maintaining healthy blood pressure and cholesterol levels is associated
with better cognitive function, according to data published in 2021 in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease. Lowering blood pressure also reduces the risk of heart disease and stroke.
When learning new information, people are encouraged to use multiple senses. Harvard Health says that when more senses are used in learning something, more of the brain is involved in retaining the memory.
Staying physically active is also important. Exercise helps maintain blood flow to the brain, which also helps to reduce the risk for hypertension.
According to Cone Health Medical Group, eating fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids, like tuna, salmon, and mackerel, decreases risk for cognitive decline. People should avoid saturated fats, trans fats, and hydrogenated oils.
Getting into the written
word can also be beneficial. According to a study in the journal Neurology, regular reading and writing in one’s older years reduced the rate of memory decline by 32%. Joining a book club or simply reading more on one’s own can improve cognition. Similarly, writing improves memory and communication abilities and can help strengthen the brain.
Avoid drinking sugary beverages and limit consumption of alcohol, as neither boasts brain-boosting properties. Instead, consider tea or coffee; these beverages can improve alertness and focus, as they’re rich in polyphenols and antioxidants. A Place for Mom says caffeine in these beverages can help solidify new memories.
Keeping the brain sharp is a multilayered process that involves healthy foods and beverages, exercise, and brain-stimulating activities.
Exercise provides a number of measurable benefits for people of all ages, including older adults. Swimming is one exercise that may be especially beneficial for seniors.
Many people learn to swim in childhood and sharpen that skill as they get older. Although swimming devotees may get in the water for fun rather than fitness, this pastime may be the ideal exercise for seniors looking to improve their overall health, particularly because it is very low-impact.
Because the water provides buoyancy, there is reduced risk of injury and minimal strain on the body. Water exercises, See Swimmers pg 7

including swimming, work all the muscle groups, so it can be a complete exercise, says American Senior Communities. Swimming also is a great cardiovascular exercise that can strengthen the heart muscle and improve lung function and endurance. Because it lowers blood pressure and improves circulation, swimming is a great way to get the heart pumping.
A gentle, 30-minute swim can burn up to 200 calories, which is more than would be used when walking. A faster swim can burn calories more quickly than running or cycling, and since water supports up to 90% of the body’s weight, this activity will put less stress on muscles and joints while one is exercising. Individuals with mobility issues or arthritis pain may find that swimming helps
relieve discomfort and improves range of motion. The water is doing much of the work holding up the body, which takes the stress off joints, helping a person to feel better while moving.
Even seniors who don’t know how to swim can reap the benefits of water exercise. Walking in shallow water or using a kickboard to stay above the water can be effective. Using foam dumb-
bells or even pushing and pulling one’s arms through the water can serve as a great resistance exercise that builds strength.
Swimming and additional water activities are great ways for seniors to stay in shape. As always, individuals should speak with their doctors before beginning any exercise regimen to ensure that it is safe.
How nutritional needs change with age
Healthy eating is important at any age and can set the course for vitality and wellness. Sufficient nutrition can help prevent chronic illnesses and make sure that growing bodies develop properly. As one ages, various changes take place in the body, making healthy eating
even more essential.
According to Healthline, nutritional deficiencies can affect aging individuals, which can decrease quality of life and lead to poor health outcomes. Individuals should pay attention to their vitamin and mineral intake at various ages so they do
not miss out on important nutrients.
As individuals age, they may notice they do not need to consume as many calories, noted Connie Bales, associate director of the Geriatric Research, Education, and Clinical Center at Durham Veterans Affairs Medical Center. People require fewer calories every decade because they are moving around less and have less muscle mass. This change causes a decline in metabolic rate.
However, even though caloric needs go down with age, it is important to pack as much nutrition into the calories a person does consume. That means finding nutrient-rich foods like whole grains, fruits, nuts, beans,
vegetables, and fish.
In addition, aging people should consume more lean protein. Muscle loss and loss of strength can develop as a person ages. Healthline says the average adult loses 3% to 8% of his or her muscle mass each decade after age 30. Eating more protein could help aging bodies maintain muscle.

People should also eat fortified cereals and grains, as the ability to absorb vitamin B12 can decrease as one gets older and with the use of certain medicines. Many health professionals recommend patients get more vitamin B12 by consuming foods enriched with this vitamin. Vitamin supplements may be needed in addition to food.

People should prioritize bone health. Osteoporosis is a concern for older adults, particularly women who have reached menopause. Osteoporosis occurs when bones become brittle and can break from only the slightest bump or fall, says the Mayo Clinic. Vitamin D and calcium help strengthen bones, and older adults may need more of these nutrients.
Individuals should speak with their health care providers and nutritionists for further insight into their changing nutritional needs. Such professionals can help customize diets to address specific health concerns.

We’ve never had them perform in our church before, but we are really excited to host them.”
The Mark Dubbeld Family hails from Moneta, Va., and the group promotes faith and fellowship through gospel music. The band’s concerts feature a mixture of music
and testimony, with the aim of encouraging audiences to feel inspired and energized to go out and share their own faith.
When the members of Reich’s Church learned the band would be in the central Pennsylvania area for an event, they were happy to host the group for the concert, Blank said.
“We have mostly focused on local groups in our past concerts, so this is a new opportunity for us,” he shared.
He encourages everyone to come out for the concert, adding that audiences can expect an impactful evening.
“If you enjoy Southern gospel music and family harmony, and you want to be ministered to and blessed, we hope you’ll come to this,” Blank remarked. “It’s going to be a wonderful event.”
No tickets are required for the concert, and there is no admission charge. A freewill offering will be received. For more information, visit www.reichschurch.com or call 717-426-1339.

The local event is part of a national Faith and Blue Weekend that is an initiative of MovementForward and One Congregation One Precinct. The goal is to build bridges through activities and outreaches between law enforcement professionals and the communities they serve, including the faith community. Everyone is invited.
Women’s group posts kickoff brunch
Neighbors Sharing and Caring will kick off its 37th year on Tuesday, Oct. 15, from 9 to 10:45 a.m. at Chiques Church, 4045 Sunnyside Road, Manheim. Women of all ages and preschool children are invited to attend. The event will include devotions, music, brunch, and fellowship.
The group’s theme for
the year is “Trust.” Through Scripture study, testimonies, and instruction, attendees will explore what it means to trust the Lord. Child care will be provided for infants through prekindergartners. Readers may contact Bonnie at 717-361-2613 or Veronica at 717-626-7603 for more information and a copy of this year’s schedule.
Women’s Shop Trail to support local businesses
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
“I think supporting local businesses is something that’s been on everyone’s minds since the pandemic, but I think as we’ve gotten further from 2020, it’s less top of mind,” said Mary Auker-Endres, owner of Snake + Skein in Elizabethtown. “I would love to see our community rally around our local places again and also really see the depth and breadth of businesses we have right here in Elizabethtown that you don’t have to drive to Lancaster or Harrisburg to see.”
With that in mind, Auker-Endres had a conversation with other female business owners in town and the Elizabethtown Women’s Shop Trail was born.
From now through Saturday, Oct. 26, the shop trail will encourage people to check out the variety of small businesses located throughout Elizabethtown.
“We have all kinds of businessesbakeries, coffee shops, retail stores, a photography studio, so much more,” Auker-Endres shared. “Many businesses will have specials, and all will be excited to welcome
folks. There are two giveaways for people visiting all or almost all of the businesses participating. Plus, you get the feel-good benefit of supporting local women.”
To get started, shoppers should visit any of the participating businesses to pick up a map, which shop employees will mark off to note their stop.
“When they’re done, they’ll turn those completed maps into WhirliGig Boutiques by Nov. 1st, and we’ll draw winners from those who completed all or most of the trail,”
Auker-Endres said, noting that specific details are listed on the maps.
“And each business on the trail contributed two prizes, so we’ll have a least two huge giveaway baskets.”
WhirliGig Boutiques is located at 206 S. Market St., Elizabethtown.
Auker-Endres opened her business, a fiber arts store, in early June. She’s passionate about supporting small businesses, and she noted that in addition to the shop trail, a Women’s Business Expo will be held on Thursday, Oct. 24, for any women-owned businesses without a physical location. Business owners who are interested
in participating may email etown womensshoptrail@gmail.com for more information.
In the meantime, she said she hopes the shop trail will bring foot traffic into Elizabethtown businesses, adding that people will learn more about the town.
“They can expect to discover their new favorite local place - try new foods, find a new hobby or pick up a cute new outfit,” she said. “There’s something for everybody.”
For more information on the trail, search for “Elizabethtown Women’s Shop Trail” on Facebook.
