All families experience their share of drama, but how often do we have a chance to see the inner workings of someone else’s family up close? That’s just what happens on stage in “August: Osage County.” The play will be performed at Susquehanna Stage, 133 W. Market St., Marietta, on select dates from Friday, Oct. 13, through Sunday, Oct. 22.

“The show is a window into a Midwestern American family,” explained Sarah Zahn, who plays Karen, the youngest of three sisters in the Weston family. “It explores what happens when tragedy hits. I think most of us can find something in it we recognize in our own families, and it can feel really

cathartic in a way.”

She added that although the show has serious overtones, it also includes upbeat moments. “There’s

The Marietta Community House is a nonprofit organization with a mission of supporting the community. Now you can support that mission in return by attending

a lot of love, a lot of humor and a lot of grief as well,” she explained.

“It has it all.”

The Pulitzer Prize-winning and Tony Award-winning play, written by Tracy Letts, takes place during the month of August in a small town in Oklahoma. Scattered family members have come back together to deal with a difficult situation.

“I would say this is a dark comedy,” said Cara Ditzler, who portrays Ivy, the middle sister. “It’s very funny, but at the same time, it’s like you’re watching a trainwreck almost.”

Andi Hill, who plays Barbara, the oldest sister, agreed, adding, “We recognize ourselves in it. We see things that would happen at our dinner table. Every emotion possible is represented at some point in this show. It feels very real.”

Ditzler noted that although the play is more than three hours long and is told in three acts, it moves quickly. “I was reading reviews of the Broadway production, and people kept saying, ‘It doesn’t feel that long.’ You’re not sitting there thinking, ‘When is this going to beover?’

Flapjacks & Friends will support Marietta Community House Join author Tess Gerritsen at Council of Friends event

When she was a child, Tess Gerritsen couldn’t resist a good mystery book. “The first mystery novels I read were Nancy Drew books,” recalled the New York Times bestselling author of more than 30 novels. “I remember thinking, ‘I want to do that. I want to tell those kinds of stories.’”

Flapjacks & Friends: A Community Pancake Breakfast.

The event will be held on Saturday, Oct. 21, from 8 to 11 a.m. at the Marietta Community House, 264 W. Market St. The menu will include pancakes, scrambled eggs, sausage, coffee and tea.

The breakfast was the brainchild of a new board member, said Joe Clark, president of the board of the Marietta Community House.

“We added board member Dave Sadler, and we were looking for ideas, mainly for community outreach,” Clark recalled. “He said, ‘Why don’t we do a pancake breakfast?’

This isn’t a big fundraiser, but it’s an outreach program.”

“Being from a practical AsianAmerican family, my parents wanted me to do something more traditional for a career,” she said. She graduated from Stanford University and went to medical school, eventually becoming a doctor. Her desire for storytelling never faltered, however,

Built in 1871 by Dr. John Huston for his nephew, the home remained a private residence until 1909, when it became a sanitarium that administered rabies vaccines to children. In

1919, as World War I was ending, Mr. and Mrs. Henry S. Hiestand purchased the building and donated the house to the community of Marietta, dedicating it in the memory of their son, Lt. Benjamin Hiestand, who had died while serving in the military. Over the years, the building has housed an American Legion post, a public library, a well-baby clinic, a soup kitchen and the Pennsylvania School for the Arts, among other organizations. It now serves as a wedding and special event venue,

with a focus on a variety of community events throughout the year, including an annual Veterans Day celebration and a garden tour.

Proceeds from events such as a pancake breakfast are used for house maintenance, Clark said. “There is always something that needs an update or a repair,” he noted.

He encourages everyone to come out for the breakfast, which will be held inside the historic site.

“The Marietta Community House serves the people of Marietta,” Clark said. “We hope people will come out

and enjoy breakfast and support our mission.”

Tickets for the breakfast will be cash only and will be available at the door. There will be separate prices for adults and children under age 12.

and when she was on maternity leave after the birth of her first son, she wrote her first novel, “Call After Midnight.” It was published in 1987, and by her third book, “Harvest,” Gerritsen made her New York Times bestseller debut in 1996.

She had started following her heart, and she didn’t plan to return to medicine. “We moved from Honolulu to Maine, and I was so determined to focus on my writing, I decided not to apply for a Maine medical license,” she said.

She took what she knew from the medical field and put it into her books, which have been published in 40 countries and often have a tie to medicine. Publisher’s Weekly dubbed Gerritsen the “medical suspense queen,” but she also made a name for herself in the industry for creating the “Rizzoli & Isles” series, focused on a partnership between two crimesolving women. The book series became a global hit and inspired the long-running TNT series of the same name.

Gerritsen will discuss her latest book, “The Spy Coast,” at her

November talk, where she’ll be joined on stage by WITF’s Scott LaMar.

“I don’t do book readings, because I think they’re kind of boring,” she said with a laugh. “What I like to talk about is, ‘Where do ideas come from? What is my process of approaching writing a new book? How do I develop characters? How do I keep going when I hit a wall?’”

Proceeds from Gerritsen’s appearance will benefit all of the public libraries in Lancaster County, said Mary Ann Steinhauer, leader of the Council of Friends.

“When I read Tess’ bio, I realized how unbelievable she is,” Steinhauer said. “It just goes to show you that her early passion manifested itself as an adult, and she was able to put that passion, along with her education and training as a doctor, into doing something she loves.”

Gerritsen said she hopes her story will inspire others to follow their dreams, noting that she often hears from readers, many of whom have done just that. Sometimes, however, the stories she hears are sadder.

One reader told her he’d been an engineer all his life, but he had wanted to become a fashion designer. “He told me he really regretted his career choice,” she said. “I like to tell people, ‘Find a way to make what you want to do work for your own family circumstances. Carve out some time to do it.’”

The Council of Friends event will be held at Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster. Tickets will include a copy of “The Spy Coast” and may be purchased at https://lancaster libraries.org/fall-author-event.

LCSWMA encourages proper battery disposal

Rechargeable batteries containing metals such as lithium and nickel can spark and explode when damaged. To combat the growing risk of battery fires, the Lancaster County Solid Waste Management Authority (LCSWMA) has announced the launch of a public education campaign to encourage proper disposal of rechargeable batteries.

Rechargeable batteries are in many common household items, including power tools, toys, cellphones, laptops, watches, vape devices and electric toothbrushes. If the rechargeable battery becomes damaged, it can cause a chemical reaction that creates a spark or explosion. Rechargeable batteries in the waste stream are prone to damage due to the impact from equipment and machinery during the waste management process.

According to Robert Zorbaugh, chief executive officer of LCSWMA, the improper disposal of rechargeable batteries is putting trash

haulers, waste disposal and recycling facilities, employees and the community at risk. Countless fires have started in the back of trash trucks and at waste disposal facilities.

Karen Gross, LCSWMA communications manager, would like the community to know that there are many free and convenient drop-off locations for end-of-life rechargeable batteries. In Lancaster County, residents can use LCSWMA’s drive-through Household Hazardous Waste Facility to drop-off both alkaline and rechargeable batteries.

For more details and to learn about other collection locations, visit www.SafeBattery Disposal.com. The webpage, available in English and Spanish, includes information regarding specialty batteries such as e-bike and electric vehicle batteries as well as battery handling tips. More information about LCSWMA is available at www.lcswma.org.

You’re invested in the characters.”

Zahn noted that her character does not appear on stage until Act 2, but she finds it hard to concentrate on anything other than the play even from backstage.

“It’s so fascinating to see what’s happening on stage,” she said. “I can’t stop watching. I can’t keep my eyes off it.”

The matriarch of the family, Violet, is portrayed by Cynthia Charles, who emphasized that her character is a flawed one. “She’s contentious and troubled. You’ll come away from this show feeling really great about your family,” she said, with a laugh.

The play is full of adult content, the cast noted, adding that

topics include suicide and addiction. Despite some dark moments, however, it provides an opportunity for introspection, Ditzler said.

“I think there are some questions left at the end of the play, which feels intentional,” she remarked. “I think those are the best shows. The ending is uncertain, and then the whole ride home, you talk about, ‘What do you think happened?’”

“August: Osage County” will be performed at 7:30 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, Oct. 13, 14, 20 and 21, as well as Thursday, Oct. 19, and at 2 p.m. on Sundays, Oct. 15 and 22. For more information, visit www.susque hannastage.com.

Since the fall of 2022, David Kieffer, president of the FaithfulGive board, has been preparing for the organization’s first online giving event to benefit organizations with a Christian mission that are active in Lancaster County. “We prayed and thought and designed and listened for a year,” said Kieffer of FaithfulGive’s five-member board and its organizational team. “Mostly we listened to what would serve various nonprofit leaders.”

The result is a three-day online giving event, which will take place in October. More than 40 local organizations have signed on to take part in the fundraiser, which will open just after midnight on Sunday, Oct. 15, and close at the end of the day on Tuesday, Oct. 17.

To introduce the event, a breakfast will be held on Monday, Oct. 16, at Westminister Presbyterian Church, 2151 Oregon Pike, Lancaster, beginning at 7:30 a.m. In addition, a short celebration picnic will be held on Oct. 17 at 5 p.m. at Long’s Park. “There will be worship, celebration, and announcing

Public Auctions

prizes,” explained Kieffer. There is no cost to attend either event, but donations will be welcomed. Those wishing to attend either event may register at www.faithfulgive.org.

Awards given at the picnic will include prizes that participating organizations will compete for from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day of the event. Prize categories are the Engaged Donor prize to benefit smaller organizations; the Show Me the Money prize for the largest unique donation; a prize package from Masterpiece Marketing, which will be awarded based on a written submission; and the Just Keep Swimming award, which will be awarded by the board based on nominations by donors who submit a paragraph about why an organization has demonstrated wisdom, love, and persistent courage in challenging circumstances. Nominations for the Just Keep Swimming award are open at https://faithfulgive.org/ prizes/.

Kieffer pointed out that the first day of the event will not be focused on giving, although the platform will be available. “It’s really a day of prayer,” he said, noting that

prayer guides will be distributed to various churches that are helping FaithfulGive to spread the word.

“(The guide) will enable people to learn about the organizations and pray for them,” Kieffer said.

Kieffer said that the decision to start FaithfulGive was motivated by the many Kingdom-minded organizations located in the county. “This is really a movement of people who live locally who recognize that Lancaster has a rich heritage of biblically faithful nonprofit organizations founded to reflect and live out biblical convictions in every area of life,” he said. “This was started by those who want to celebrate those orga-

nizations, nurture their vision, and guard it for the next generation.”

Looking ahead, Kieffer noted that he would love to see the giving event raise $500,000 or more.

“Our goal is to bless this community,” he said. “This is really a labor of love,” he noted, adding that neither he nor the other board members - who include vice president Lynette Morales, secretary Jim Adams, treasurer Steve Bucklen, and member at large Kurt Weaverare salaried.

The Donegal cheer program will host its inaugural cheer competition at the high school on Saturday, Oct. 21. Doors will open at 8 a.m., and the community is welcome to attend to see local teams perform. There is an admission fee, with a discount for students and seniors.

The varsity cheer team - made up of 14 athletes - is coached by Kellye Herbert, former coach of the junior high cheer team, and the varsity football team is coached by Anthony Sottasante; both are new to their positions. The two coaches have sought to bond the football and cheer programs, encourage

those involved to support each other and create a family spirit.

The Donegal school board recently unanimously voted the varsity cheer squad into PIAA competitive spirit. This decision means that in addition to cheering at football, soccer, basketball and wrestling events, the cheer squad will participate in competitions, including PIAA districts and potentially states.

The team continues to participate in community service, and it has already organized a food drive for food-insecure families in the community.

Candy, costumes and camaraderie

“If you love Halloween, costumes, community and fun, this is for you,” said Tony Gibble of LIV-Etown, who is helping to organize the Market Street Candy Crawl and Trunk-or-Treat Costume Party Extravaganza. “Come and be a part of it. There will be over 50 spots to collect candy, not including the trunks to visit.”

The event will be held in downtown Elizabethtown from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 18.

People will be able to go trick-ortreating through Elizabethtown businesses, at tables set up along the sidewalks and in trunks of participating vehicles.

“Mars Wrigley will be there, as well as the Lancaster PA Ghostbusters, a hearse from Barton Signs, an elaborate pirate display, as well as many other surprises, spooky decorations around the downtown area, music, snacks and more,” Tony stated. Elizabethtown businesses and organizations will

feature specials, and My Town E-Town Sticker Books stickers will be available for collecting.

Anyone who wears a costume will be eligible to win a pumpkin bucket full of gift cards in a drawing if they register at the LIV-Etown table on the square.

A special visitor, Labyrinth Jareth, King of the Goblins, will oversee the event and will be available for photos at the Tatted Toy Guys Toy Emporium. Free trick-or-treat bags will be provided by the Candy Unicornium and at the LIV-Etown table while supplies last.

Clint Gibble of LIV-Etown noted that this is the third year for the event, which is growing annually. “It came about as a desire by the LIV-Etown team to provide a fun, interactive experience for all in our downtown, reminiscent of the mall trick-or-treats we grew up with and as an alternative to the standard trick-or-treat,” he explained, noting that the event also serves as a give-back to the community for its support. “We basically wanted to throw a

huge E-town Halloween party.” Spots are available for people who are interested in setting up a trunk, Clint said, adding, “This can be a business, organization or just anyone in the community that wants to be involved.” Event attendees of all ages are encouraged to come in costume.

Maytown Historical Society to meet

Maytown Historical Society will hold its meeting on Thursday, Oct. 19, at the Township Building on Rock Point Road in Maytown. The evening will begin at 6:30 p.m. with a special program given by one of the conductors from the Hershey Trolley Works, Kim Harr.

He will share information about the Hershey of the past before the chocolate factory and the Hershey of today. He will also discuss the life of Milton Hershey.

There will be time for a question-and-answer session and refreshments. All are welcome.

ONLINE ONLY AUCTION

Market Street will be open during the event, so people are reminded to follow traffic safety signals, use assigned crosswalks and take small children by the hand.

For more information or to inquire about participating with a trunk, contact “Liv_Etown” on Facebook.
