Seniors invited to SALT ministry

For seniors, options to make connections in the community can be limited. The members of Mount Joy Church of God want to change that. The church is launching a new ministry called SALT - Seniors Are Living Treasures - open to anyone age 60 or older. There is no cost to attend the program, which will meet at the church, 30 E. Main St., Mount Joy, on Tuesdays from 9 a.m. to noon.

Church member Tracy Miller said the time is split between organized activities and unstructured free time. “We will provide cards, games, puzzles, adult coloring, conversation, etc. Even our church library will be open for anyone who wishes to check out a book,” she said. “We will also have different activities every week: bingo, ice cream social, classic movies and popcorn, crafts and more.”

According to the Centers for

Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), loneliness and social isolation in older adults are public health risks affecting a significant number of people in the United States and putting them at risk of serious medical

conditions. A 2020 study by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine shows that nearly one-fourth of adults age 65 and older are considered to be socially isolated. According to the CDC, social isolation can lead to a 50% increased risk of

dementia, a 29% increased risk of heart disease and a 32% increased risk of stroke.

To combat those statistics locally, the members of Mount Joy Church of God hope SALT becomes a true community effort. Several leaders of local churches have joined the effort to promote the ministry. “The senior population in Mount Joy needs a place where they can congregate, socialize, share miseries or health conditions, meet new friends and not be lonely,” said Nancy Shonk, who attends Florin Church of the Brethren.

Joining Shonk on the leadership is Renee Haney from Swatara Hill Church of the Brethren, who got involved because she understands the loneliness that seniors can struggle with. “So many seniors are lonely and don’t know how to connect with others with similar interests,” Haney shared.

“I’m hoping SALT will be a place where they can make meaningful connections with others in their

Haunted Marietta to return

Haunted Marietta is back for another year, encouraging brave souls to experience some spine-tingling fun - if they dare!

This year’s event will take place from 5:30 to 9 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 25 and 26, and will feature two attractions: a haunted house at the Union Meeting House, 80 N. Waterford Ave., and a haunted corn maze and other activities behind Molly’s Courtyard Café, 17 E. Market St.

From 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. both evenings, the haunted house will offer a less-scary option for children, with no costumed actors. From 7 to 9 p.m. each night,

the attraction will feature thrills and chills for adults throughout the interactive attraction. On Oct. 26, people are invited to join in a costume parade starting in the square in Marietta at 5 p.m. and walking down to the Union Meeting House for the children’s hour.

Things are about to get spooky on Main Street in Mount Joy. The Mount Joy Area Chamber of Commerce and the Mount Joy Borough Police Department will host Spooktacular Family Fun Night on Friday, Oct. 25, from 5 to 8 p.m. Main Street will be closed from Barbara Street to New Haven Street so people can walk between businesses and organizations for the trick-or-treat event.

“If you have children and love Halloween, this is the place to be,” said Robert Goshen, chief of police. “We close down Main Street to enhance safety, and everyone hands out candy to those in costume. Local vendors and shopkeepers will be open, as well as our department and the fire department will be participating. We also will have several characters from Star Wars joining us again.”

Inviting seniors to SALT are (from left) Renee Haney, Nancy Shonk, Richard Vaughn and Tracy Miller.

When it comes to future success, one factor has a strong influence: grit. According to researchers from the University of Pennsylvania, grit is a more accurate predictor of success than IQ, physical health, social intelligence or attractiveness.

Over the years, Columbia’s event has drawn strong participation, but that dwindled a bit since COVID, so organizers are hoping to build the event back up to its pre-pandemic level.

We encourage civic and fraternal groups, schools, churches, Scouting groups, and other local organizations to submit news releases of general interest to the majority of our readership. Members of the Columbia-Middletown Elks 1074 have been promoting the power of grit for decades through the Elks Hoop Shoot. The event, open to anyone between the ages of 8 and 13, will be held this year on Sunday, Nov. 3, in the gym at Park Elementary School, 50 S. Sixth St., Columbia. Doors will open at 11:30 a.m., and the contest will begin at 12:30 p.m.

“The Hoop Shoot started

For the free-throw competition, children are divided into three age groups and separated by gender. Each participant may take warm-up shots and then will attempt to make as many baskets as possible in 25 shots.

Prizes will be awarded for first-, second- and thirdplace finishers, and the top scorer in each division will move on to a district competition in January 2025.

“From there, winners will go to the state competition in March and then on to the regional competition and to the finals, which will be held in April in Chicago,” Kissinger said. “In the past, we have had people move on to states, but we haven’t had anyone go to nationals. We’d love to see that happen.”

At the national event, six finalists are crowned national champions, and their names are displayed in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass.

The Hoop Shoot is open to anyone in the age range from any area, and participants do not have to be members of a basketball team to participate. Members of the Columbia High School basketball team will volunteer at the event, helping with rebounds and serving as role models for the younger kids, Kissinger said.

The mission of the event is to have fun but also to help students set a goal, she explained.

“I think a competition like this is good for kids because it’s something they can practice and strive for,” she shared. “They start building that grit and determination, and that helps them throughout their life.”

Hosting the Hoop Shoot

is just one way the Elks give back to the community, said volunteer Robin Gamby.

“We do a lot of things for the community,” she said, noting that the organization participates in National Night Out and hosts a Flag Day event. “We want to make an impact, and the Hoop Shoot is a way for us to reach out to kids in the community.”

The Hoop Shoot is part of the organization’s charitable arm, the Elks National Foundation (ENF). The ENF strives to build stronger communities through programs that support youths, serve veterans and meet local needs.

For more information on the Hoop Shoot, visit https://tinyurl.com/4 vjut2wb, call 717-575-9032 or email bpoe1074@com cast.net. Participants who register by Friday, Oct. 25, will be entered in a drawing for Dick’s Sporting Goods gift cards. Preregistration is encouraged for the event, but it is not required.

Winners from last year’s Hoop Shoot were (from left) Nick Boyer, Asher Detz and Noah Boyer.

As Goshen noted, the police department brings in costumed characters, but members of the police force also participate in the holiday fun.

“We invite a local club of Star Wars enthusiasts to join us, and we set up their stage in front of the police department,” he said. “We do have a member that dresses up; however, we keep his identity and costume a secret until the evening of the event.”

Participants in the Spooktacular Family Fun Night will include businesses and organizations located along Main Street, such as Proclamation Presbyterian Church, Dave’s Cleanouts and Collectibles, Our Crafty Ways

and Sheetz Funeral Home.

Other businesses and organizations that are located beyond Main Street in Mount Joy, including the Milanof-Schock Library and RAISE28, will also participate along the route. Many participants will give out candy, while others will distribute small trinkets such as bookmarks or food such as popcorn, and others will feature games for kids. Some organizations will have food for purchase, including Mount Joy Church of God at 30 E. Main St., where a stand will include hot dogs, hamburgers, chips, drinks and baked goods for sale, with proceeds benefiting the youth group’s mission trip in the summer of 2025.

People enjoy Spooktacular Family Fun Night in Mount Joy.

Spooktacular Family Fun Night will offer an opportunity to bring people out for a safe and fun evening of entertainment, Goshen said.

“It’s a family-friendly event that highlights Mount Joy Borough businesses and its resi -

dents,” he commented. “It strengthens relationships and gives visitors a chance to see how strong our community bonds are.”

Mardi Gras Halloween Parade will roll through town

For 77 years, the annual Mardi Gras Halloween Parade has rolled through the streets of Columbia, entertaining spectators and raising spirits. This year’s parade will be held on Thursday, Oct. 24. It will step off at 7 p.m. from 10th and Manor streets in Columbia and will proceed along a 1.5-mile route that includes sections of Manor, South Fourth, Union, South Second, Locust and South Sixth streets. The parade is sponsored by the Columbia Lions Club and Sunsnappers, a men’s service organization. This year’s parade theme

is “Food Fiesta,” and both participants and spectators are encouraged to wear costumes reflecting the theme.

“This year’s parade is shaping up to be one of the biggest in years,” said John Grunden, Lions Club treasurer. “We already have more units registered than we did last year. It’s a great way for people to come together for an evening of fun with family and friends.”

The parade will feature five divisions with at least one band in each division.

The procession will include high school marching bands, emergency response units, baton twirlers, Scout troops, fire companies,

floats, walking groups, businesses and a steam calliope as the final entry. Several nonprofit organizations will sell food along the parade route.

Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three winners in various categories, including baton groups, floats, walking groups and individuals. Grunden explained that judges are anonymous and roam the parade route to rate entrants on their overall appearance and performance. This helps ensure that parade viewers get a fair representation of what each unit has to offer, including elements that

might have been missed if the entrants were to save their best performance for a specific reviewing area.

At Molly’s Courtyard Café, visitors can explore a corn maze and enjoy a variety of food trucks and vendors, said Ali Marquart, a board member of Marietta Restoration Associates, which organizes the event under creative director and Marietta resident Willis Boyles.

“People can expect a scary night ahead of them when entering either of the Haunted Marietta attractions,” Marquart said. “For those who are not a fan of getting scared, they can enjoy the vendors and food trucks for a family fun evening.”

Boyles had created a Halloween attraction in his Marietta backyard for many years, inviting the community to attend free of charge. In 2019, Marietta Restoration Associates approached Boyles about collaborating on the event and moving it to the Union Meeting House, where it could take place no matter the weather. Boyles still handles all of the design and creativity for the haunted house, with new features added each year.

Marquart invites people of all ages to come to Haunted Marietta, noting that a small admission fee will be charged for each attraction. Donations will be accepted as well.

Proceeds from the event benefit Marietta Restoration Associates, an organization founded in 1965 by a group of Marietta citizens that wanted to preserve the history of the town. “Since then, the organization has grown to be a staple in the community by organizing events such as Haunted Marietta and the Candlelight Tour,” Marquart said. “The money from these events goes towards continuing to preserve Marietta’s cultural and architectural heritage.”

Both cash and credit cards will be accepted for Haunted Marietta, but cash is preferred. For more information, search for “Haunted Marietta PA” on Facebook.

The idea for the ministry came from Mount Joy Church of God’s plans to mark its 200th anniversary in 2031. The church assembled a Vision 2031 team to look at challenges and opportunities in the community. The team noticed a lack of activities for seniors in Mount Joy. “We don’t have a location here in Mount Joy where seniors can just meet, have a cup of coffee, fellowship, play cards,” Miller said. “I felt compelled to change that.”

Mount Joy Church of God senior pastor Richard Vaughn looks forward to what the ministry can do to help the community. “Our goal is to be a key member of this community, whether it’s participating in different downtown community events like Winterfest or simply providing access to our facility bathrooms during the car show,” he remarked. “This is an opportunity for our facility to be used by the greater community. “Students of the E-town Middle School Student Council will be hosting many free carnival games and activities,” Norman shared. “E-town College students will be hosting several tables of activities and games as part of their ‘Jumping Into the Streets’ day of community volunteer service.” Members of the Elizabethtown College wrestling team will run the haunted barn.

A variety of craft vendors will be on-site, and the festival will feature food trucks, including Philly Cheesesteak Co. on the Roll, Mocha Motion Coffee, MAD BBQ LLC and the Candy Unicornium.

While the main goal of the festival is to provide a fun family outing, it serves an additional purpose, Norman shared. “Partnerships (with community groups) allow GEARS to highlight the talents of the younger generations and promote the value of serving your community,” she explained. “They play a huge part in the success

of the event in offering so many free activities and interacting with guests.”

Norman emphasized that the festival also relies on sponsors, which help GEARS hold the event year after year. The major sponsors of the event are Members 1st Federal Credit Union, RE/MAX Pinnacle Greg Grogan/Kate Storm Team and Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health.

Norman encourages people to come out to the festival, which promises to be an entertaining event.

“Students have been working hard to prepare activities for all to enjoy, so stop by and share in the excitement of fall,” she said. “While many of the activities are free of charge, some activities will require a small fee. These activities can be purchased individually, or a wristband may be purchased for (a set price) at the event.”

The Fall Festival will be held rain or shine. For more information, visit www.GetintoGEARS.org/ fall-festival.

Piercing Word to present Scripture-based musical

Piercing Word will present its original production “Sermon on the Mount: The Musical!” at Florin Church of the Brethren, 815 Bruce Ave., Mount Joy, at 9:15 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 20.

Audiences will witness Jesus’ most famous sermon set to original music. In this word-for-word presentation of Matthew 5-7, Jesus describes what life is

like in the Kingdom of God. Contrasted with the legalistic society of his day, Jesus helps to explain that man sees the outward appearance while God looks at the heart.

Piercing Word performs Scripture in dramatic and musical presentations, word-for-word from the ESV Bible. The group, a nonprofit, 501(c)(3), Christian ministry based

in Lancaster, has been performing Scripture across the country since 2007.

Piercing Word challenges people to memorize the Word of God for themselves and then equips them to do so through its Warriors of the Word Bible memorization resources. To find out more information about Piercing Word, visit www.piercingword.org or call 888-244-3461.

Barrel train rides and inflatables will be featured at the GEARS Fall Festival.

Library Friends present donation

Milanof-Schock Library director Joseph McIlhenney (fourth from left) received a donation check from library Friends members (from far left) Judy Scanlin, Carol Miller, Joyce Summers, Liz Sarbaugh, Marilyn Barnett, Diane Rice, Lora Jones, and Christine Meckley.

The Friends of Milanof-Schock Library recently presented a $25,000 check to the library during their Friends Night event, which was part of the library’s silver anniversary Love Your Library Benefit Bash. The amount includes the proceeds from the Friends’ used book sale in June. The annual sale

is the largest fundraiser that the Friends lead and organize for the benefit of the library.

The Friends group has been an important part of the library for the last 25 years, during which time it has raised more than half a million dollars to benefit the library. The group was officially

organized in August 1999 after functioning as a book sale committee for three years. Upon formation of the Friends group, officers were elected, and regular meeting times were established. The group is a nonprofit organization and a member of Pennsylvania Citizens for Better Libraries.

Church to dish up chicken corn soup

St. John’s Episcopal Church, 239 E. Market St., Marietta, has announced that its homemade chicken corn soup sale has returned this fall. Featuring fresh cut corn and other ingredients, the soup will be made and sold at the church on Saturday, Oct. 26, from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. or until sold out.

Members of the church will make the soup, which will be for sale by the quart. Containers will be provided.

To place an order, call the church office at 717-426-3189. Proceeds from the sale will go to the “Tools for School” program that St.

John’s congregation participates in each fall to help prepare local students for the upcoming school year. Members of St. John’s collect clothing and toiletry articles that the students may need for the upcoming school year as well as snacks and food items they can use for their lunches.

Program to focus on God’s faithfulness

Women of all ages and preschool children are invited to attend Neighbors Sharing and Caring, a women’s ministry of the Chiques Church, 4045 Sunnyside Road, Manheim, on Tuesday, Oct. 22, from 9 to 10:45 a.m.

Amanda Meisenbach will speak on the topic “Faithful

in Every Season,” focusing on God’s faithfulness. Meisenbach will use the life of the biblical character Joseph as an example.

Amanda is married to Joe and is a mother of two preschool children. She is a member of Chiques Church and enjoys being outdoors, baking, reading,

and spending time with friends.

During the program, child care will be provided for infants through prekindergartners. Readers may contact Bonnie at 717-361-2613 or Veronica at 717-626-7603 for more information and a copy of this year’s schedule.

Hope’s Haven to host community hoedown

Hope’s Haven Rescue & Youth Camp, 114 Kissel Barrick Road, Bainbridge, will hold a community hoedown on Saturday, Oct. 19, from 1 to 4 p.m. The event is free to the community.

Hope’s Haven is a faithbased ministry, where rescued horses are paired with children dealing with conflicts or trauma in their lives. The hoedown will include horse rides, hayrides, food for purchase and pumpkin painting. It is also an opportunity to meet volunteer staff members and learn more about the program.

Among the attractions at the event will be hayrides.

Any cancellation information will be posted at www.facebook.com/hopes haven4Life. In the event of cancellation, the event will not be rescheduled. For additional details, visit the aforementioned Facebook page or www.hopeshaven 4life.org.
