have been set for adults and for students. Director Kevin Ditzler described the themes of “The Crucible” as timeless and relevant. “(‘The Crucible’) looks at who is to blame in all of this, and the audience will be trying to figure out how people were duped into this,” Ditzler said. “We want the audience to feel the hysteria the people of Salem felt, and attempting to do that really excited me to take on this show.” Ditzler has 20 years of experience directing shows at Lampeter-Strasburg High School and has acted in numerous SSC performances. This will be his first time directing an SSC production. Rachel Snyder of Mount Joy will portray 17-year-old orphan Abigail Williams, who works as a live-in housekeeper for John and Elizabeth Proctor until she is kicked out by Elizabeth. “(Abigail) twists the truth so much and makes the whole town believe her lies,” Snyder said. process, but to get to that point takes quite a bit of work,” stated Parnham. Coaches - or any leaders - set the standard for a team, but Parnham emphasized that standards of excellence cannot be imposed by coaches alone. He encouraged the audience to play to the strengths of those they lead. “If you want exceptional results, you have to create exceptional circumstances,” Parnham noted. Calling out an individual’s strengths often yields greater success than harping on the bad, which has the opposite effect of not building confidence. “I’ve never met anybody that likes to be shouted at or abused in front of their peers - it just doesn’t work,” said Parnham. “Success leaves clues. Focus on the most important areas and make them trademark behaviors.” Prior to his current role, Parnham served as head coach of the USA Field Hockey Women’s National Team (USWNT), guiding it to fifth place for its highest International Hockey Federation Hero World Ranking in recent history. The team, whose official training grounds are at Spooky Nook Sports, went on to the 2016 Rio Olympics, where it earned a fifth-place finish. Under his leadership as coach, the team also won gold medals at the 2015 Pan American Games and the 2014 Champions Challenge, earned fourth place at the 2014 Rabobank World Cup, and took a bronze medal at the 2016 Champions Trophy. In 2015, the United States Olympic Committee recognized Parnham as 2015 National Coach of the Year. As a field hockey player, Parnham competed in the 2000 and 2004 Olympic Games for Great Britain, as well as the 2002 World Cup. He also coached Great Britain at the 2008 and 2012 Olympic Games. In addition to leadership lessons from Parnham, Leadership Inspired included a luncheon and celebration of outstanding local leadership through the announcement of the 2019 recipients of the Connect and Educate awards. The Connect Award, which honors those who provide opportunities for connecting individuals and organizations in an effort to maximize collective wisdom, went to the Neighborhood Leadership
Academy (NLA). NLA is a six-session training and grant program designed to empower community leaders in Lancaster city neighborhoods. The initiative was made possible by a collaboration of the City of Lancaster, Lancaster County Community Foundation, and Leadership Lancaster. The Educate Award was given to James Cowhey for demonstrating a commitment to educating community leaders and exemplifying qualities of a servant leader. Cowhey recently retired as the executive director of the Lancaster County Planning Commission. He began serving on the commission staff in 1988 and became executive director in 2005. Following the program, the sponsors of Leadership Inspired received a VIP tour of the USA Field Hockey team’s space at Spooky Nook Sports led by current players Kelly Marks, Kealsie Robles, and Nicole Woods. Leadership Lancaster was established in 1983 by the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce & Industry and the Junior League of Lancaster County with a mission of developing outstanding community leadership to support the needs of the county. More than 2,500 people have participated in its programs, which include a nine-month Core Program, the Executive Class, a College Core Class, Leadership Advantage, and the Board Leadership Academy. Esbenshade explained that The Harbor Restoration Program aims to provide psychological, physical, emotional, and spiritual care with a holistic, Christ-centered focus. Through the trauma-informed, strengths-based residential program, the needs of each survivor are assessed and an individual care plan is implemented. Tapas Shindig ticket proceeds will go toward providing equine-assisted therapy for residents of The Harbor. “All of our residents get individualized therapy, and (equine therapy) is something that has been extra beneficial for them,” explained Esbenshade. Attendees will hear stories from survivors of trafficking and learn about the organization’s vision for the coming year. That vision is covered in the acronym R.I.S.E.: Renovating existing structures, Innovating through programming, Sustainability through transitional living, and remaining Established in Christ for all of the restorative services offered. The vision is also reflective of the declaration in Scripture from Micah 7:8: “Do not rejoice over me, O my enemy! Rivertown Theatre Productions LLC will present Columbia’s Haunted Lantern Tour on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 25 and 26. Directors Sara Mimnall and Rebecca Wright said that this year’s theme, “Urban Spirits,” will showcase the night life of Columbia Borough from the early 1800s through the 1930s, covering topics including celebration, crime, evasion, and bootlegging. “This year we are stepping away from our typical spine-chilling themes of the past to cover essential parts of Columbia’s history that aren’t as dark and gory while adding an exciting and provocative twist,” Wright shared. Tours will step off every half hour beginning at 6:30 p.m., with the last tour starting at 9:30 p.m. Tickets will be available while supplies last on the evenings of the tours. The tours will begin and end at The Loyal Order of the Moose, 223 Locust St., Columbia. Participants will have the opportunity to walk through two indoor venues, including the historic Samuel Miller mansion that is now home to Art Printing Company at 131 Locust St. A trolley ride will also be part of the tour. “Sara and I both

explored the large mansion and found many treasures from its past, including saws, golf sets, and paddle balls left behind from The Baker Toy Company that used to reside where Art Printing Company is now,” relayed Wright. The “Urban Spirits” theme emerged from the many brainstorming sessions that Wright and Mimnall, who are both 2011 graduates of Columbia High School, held to prepare for the tour. This year’s crew includes 20 actors and 10 additional volunteers. Wright said the cast is energetic and comedic and has done an excellent job of breathing life into Columbia’s rich history. More than 400 people attended last year’s tours, which were themed “Mortality Within” and discussed the disease and poverty that struck Columbia and other communities in earlier days. Wright said that many people who took part in that tour said that the heartbreaking stories brought tears to their eyes. Guests also expressed appreciation for how the tour themes change from year to year. For more information, readers may search for “Columbia’s Haunted Lantern Tour” on Facebook or call 717-517-2442.

finish at Ephrata. “Rachel Fernald, Amanda Fry, Marleigh Ballard, Emma Coming off a newly minted Section Myers, Meg Zell, and senior Ella Two title, the Donegal girls were looking DeBruin all ran amazing to help the to showcase their talents last Tuesday Indians to such a great finish!” at the Lancaster-Lebanon League With that finish, Donegal repeated Championships which were held at as the top finishing team from Section Ephrata Middle School. The undefeated Two as well. Indians celebrated a continued dominance Shoaf and Naqvi led that pack on Tuesday finishing 15th and 17th, respectively, with Shoaf finishing in 20:39.6 and Naqvi clocking in at 20:43.9. The junior missed out on placing 16th by the narrowest of margins, literally, finishing neck-and-neck with Cedar Crest’s Jillian Tobias who edged her by two tenths of a second at 20:43.7. Fernald placed 29th overall with a time of 21:13.7 which counted as 28th in team scoring, and was joined by Fry in 38th (21:36.8) and Ballard in 42nd (21:40) which helped Donegal to 136 points with Hempfield leading the field at 91 followed by Cedar Crest (94), Elizabethtown (126), Ephrata (131), and Manheim Township (132). Myers was 52nd overall with a time of 22:01.2, Zell finished 71st in 22:50.9 and DeBruin rounded things out at 109th in 24:50.8. Donegal’s boys also completed a strong regular season going 9-2 and finishing third behind LampeterStrasburg (11-0) and Manheim Central (10-1), although Tuesday’s meet did provide them with a sense of redemption. “The boys capped off their impressive 9-2 season with a 12th place finish, nine spots better than last season,” stated Werner. “Brock Overlander paced the boys with a 33rd overall finish! Great races by Photo by Mona Steinhauer Hunter Gehman, Logan Fry, Sam Donegal sophomore Hadley Shoaf led the Indian cross country Rothstein, Andrew Allen, Brandon team at last Tuesday’s Lancaster-Lebanon League champi- Marcelo, and our senior Aydan Miller onships at Ephrata Middle School, posting a time of 20:39.6 to helped us beat LS and Manheim in local racing, repeating as back-to-back section champs led by juniors Myra Naqvi and Rachel Fernald and sophomore Hadley Shoaf with a strong group behind them. “The girls once again had an incredible pack that many other teams have feared all season,” said head coach Matthew Werner in reference to their sixth-place team

Central, two teams that narrowly beat us during the regular season!” Overlander also was involved in a photo finish, his coming against Warwick’s Jeremy Bell who earned a slim half second margin of victory at 32nd with a time of 17:38.8 while Overlander finished in 17:38.3 He was followed by Gehman who clocked in at 18:10.1 for a 60th overall finish, Fry in 63rd (18:14.4), Rothstein in 75th (18:35.3), and Ethan Steck in 86th (18:42.1) as the Indians tallied 308 points on the day. Allen landed in 127th overall with a time of 19:32.7 with Marcelo (128th, 19:44.8) and Miller (160th, 21:36.1) finishing out as well. Next up for the Donegal teams is the District Three meet this Saturday at Big Spring High School where the girls, who are currently ranked 2nd in the Central PA power rankings for District Three AA, will look to qualify for the PIAA meet for a second straight year. Shoaf, Naqvi, Fernald, Fry, Ballard, Myers, and Zell will represent the Indians on Saturday. The boys will send Overlander, Gehman, Fry, Rothstein, Steck, Allen, and Marcello to Big Spring. Coming in to the race ranked sixth in the power rankings, Donegal will have to finish in the top three to qualify for states as AA only sends three teams to the big race. FIELD HOCKEY The L-L League tournament was held last week with the quarterfinals taking place on Tuesday in a double header at Penn Manor. Donegal took on the host Comets in the second game of the night where, despite putting in a strong effort, the lady Indians were eliminated with a 4-1 defeat. “Our team played hard last Tuesday but didn’t create enough shooting opportunities,” said first year coach Amanda Misselhorn. “CC Emswiler, our GK had a good game making first saves but PM beat us to the rebounds. We had some trouble
handling their speed and high pressure but improved and played much better in the second half.” Donegal fell behind 3-0 in the first half as Penn Manor’s aggressive attack on offense was able to generate numerous corner opportunities which the Comets used to score the first two goals of the game. Emswiler, who made four saves on the night, got pads on the first one but was unable to recover in time as Malayna Kahl punched in the rebound to make it 1-0. Two quick strikes within less than a minute pulled the Comets farther ahead as Lydia Marchuck found the back of the cage with 5:01 remaining and Jasmine Miller did the same 28 seconds later to go up by three. It did not take the Indians long to respond in the second half as Madison

Leety took advantage of a Donegal corner to make it 3-1 with only 1:12 off the clock, however the ladies were not able to create another scoring opportunity the rest of the game. “Maddy Leety scored a gorgeous tip on a penalty corner. Kiera Baughman made a perfectly timed pass to Morgan Saunders who hit a hard shot on cage to set up Leety for our goal early in the second half,” said Misselhorn. “Our corners have been improving and (we) hope to execute on Wednesday. That L-L League game was a good test against a fast team to get us ready for Districts.” The Indians, who hold a record five consecutive AA titles in District Three, enter Wednesday’s tournament ranked ninth and will take on L-L rival Lampeter-Strasburg which holds the number eight seed.

The Indians’ Owen Fisher sets up to block the Crusaders’ Cary Frick during Donegal’s 32-0, Section Three loss at Lancaster Catholic last Friday.
FOOTBALL Riding high just a month ago, Donegal was undefeated and challenging for a Section Three title. Fast forward, and the Indians have now dropped their last three including a 32-0 loss Friday night to Lancaster Catholic and are currently in third place at 5-3 while the Crusaders (7-1) are guaranteed at least a share of the crown. Running back Jeffery Harley scorched the Indians defense for 209 yards rushing and two touchdowns, plus a 56-yard kickoff return following a Donegal safety that capped the scoring on the night. The Crusaders totaled 360 yards of offense while the Indians struggled, only gaining 134 with 31 of those coming through the air. “They were more physical than us,” stated coach Chad Risberg. “They didn’t

Garrett Blake’s interception early in the second quarter ended a Catholic drive and placed the Indians on their own 45-yard line, but they failed to convert a first down and were forced to punt with 9:43 to play in the half. On the ensuing possession, Donegal’s defense had the Crusaders backed up in a first and goal situation from their own 33-yard line following a string of penalties but, chewing up huge chunks of ground, they eventually managed a 32-yard field goal with 5:22 to go up 16-0.
44 seconds to go before halftime for a 23-0 Crusader lead. The Indians had limited success on the ground with Joe Fox leading the pack at 53 yards on eight carries as Blake (7-33), Mason Ober (8-17) and Kasper Sipe (1-2) combined for 103 total yards of rushing. Donegal’s best scoring opportunity of the game came in the third when a forced Crusader punt placed the Indians on their own 29-yard line. Putting together a sustained drive that consisted of 11 plays, the Donegal run attack began to gain some traction as Blake, Fox, and Ober ground their way down to the Lancaster Catholic 22-yard line and a fourth down and eight situation. Dropping back to pass, quarterback Trent Weaver (4-12, 31yds) was flushed out of the pocket and rolled to his right before the Crusader defense dropped him for a sack which resulted in a four-yard loss and a turnover on downs. “We knew they had a pretty good run defense,” stated Risberg. “We had to be able to throw the ball a little more. We didn’t make the proper reads and our protection broke down at times. We had people open, but just didn’t execute.” Later, in the fourth quarter, and
with Donegal pinned deep in its own territory, Lancaster Catholic forced Weaver into an off-balance sidearm pass that went backwards and fell incomplete. Jacob Shoemaker then smacked the still live ball through the back of the end zone for the two-point

Ethiopian Evangelical Church in Lancaster (EECL), 175 Church St., Landisville, and Ketema is a registered nurse and works at a Harrisburg-area rehab hospital. The couple has worked with Immanuel Church in Harar to open Siloam Ethiopia Medium Clinic in a rented building in Harar. “I believe that the vision that Demeke and Wegayhu have for radically changing areas of Ethiopia through meeting physical and spiritual needs is possible through God’s love for the people,” commented Siloam Ethiopia board member John Lehman. “(I’m motivated by) the goal that poverty can be changed and the people of Ethiopia can have abundant life.” Things are going well at the clinic, which launched during Ketema’s May 2018 visit and has seen more than 1,000 clients, so the ministry has begun the process of expanding its reach. Rather than spend the money to rent other facilities, Siloam Ethiopia has partnered with three rural schools to use as satellite clinics. A traveling nurse will visit each school on a regular basis to provide health care to the community. One of the host schools is the one Ketema attended as a child. During Ketema’s trip to Ethiopia in September 2019, the school gave her a copy of her transcript, which includes headshots of both Ketema and her mother. In addition to establishing satellite clinics at the three schools during her last visit, Ketema met with the Ministry of Education, which presented Siloam Ethiopia with a certificate of recognition for the satellite clinics; launched weekly health visits to the approximately 75 residents of
The school in Harar, Ethiopia, where Wegayhu Ketema attended as a child is one of the first three satellite medical clinic locations established by Landisville-based Siloam Ethiopia. A fundraising meal on Oct. 26 will support the outreach efforts. a segregated poor village and a government-run nursing home; met with a woman who may be able to dig the rest of the wells Siloam Ethiopia hopes to build at the rural schools; and established relationships with builders and other EthiopianAmericans who want to serve their home country. Ketema’s stay also included several visits with the girls who are being cared for in a small orphanage run by Siloam Ethiopia in Babile. To support this work, Siloam Ethiopia will host a fundraising dinner at EECL on Saturday, Oct. 26, from noon to 7 p.m. Getahun and Ketema will prepare a buffet meal of traditional Ethiopian food, and diners may learn about what has been accomplished by the ministry. Takeouts will be available. Reservations are not required, but for planning purposes, readers are asked to email siloamethio@gmail.com to indicate their plans to attend. To learn more about Siloam Ethiopia, readers may email the organization or visit www.siloamethio.org.
Siloam Ethiopia co-founder Wegayhu Ketema (right) was part of the launch of home visits conducted by clinic staffers during her visit in September. An Ethiopian meal in Landisville on Oct. 26 will raise funds for the ministry.

When Wegayhu Ketema traveled to her hometown of Harar, Ethiopia, in May 2018, she took the time to revisit the rock where her dreams of nursing began. As she would wait on the rock for the school day to start,
Ketema would see a nurse walk by. Ketema’s admiration of the medical professional inspired her to become a nurse. Sixteen months after her stop at the rock, Ketema returned to Ethiopia, but this time, she visited her former school. And, this time, she was the nurse inspiring others.
