Handmade items will shine at Craft Bazaar

Unique handmade items and lots of delicious food will be featured at the annual Craft Bazaar at Pleasant View Communities. Organized by the Pleasant View Auxiliary, the event will be held on Saturday, Nov. 2, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the community, 544 N. Penryn Road, Manheim.

“We have 57 vendors coming,” said Pam Hoffman, a member of the auxiliary. “We have a huge variety of handcrafted items.”

Vendors will sell original art, fabric items, paper crafts, engraved wood pieces, jewelry, candles, soaps and more.

“We have someone who is

making Norwegian sweaters,” Hoffman said. “We have someone doing a modern take on frakturs and someone who creates things out of antique linens. We have

someone who sells live-edge tables. We also have someone who has written a romance novel, and she’ll have her books there.” Pet gifts, wood toys, embroidered

items, gourd art and stained glass will make up some of the other offerings.

A bake sale of items made by Pleasant View residents will also be featured, and a food stand will sell chicken corn soup, barbecue, hot dogs and drinks.

The vendors are a mix of people from the greater community as well as Pleasant View residents, and shoppers will find something for everyone on their holiday list, Hoffman said.

Proceeds from the bazaar will benefit the Pleasant View Auxiliary. “The purpose of the auxiliary

Practice makes perfect when it comes to learning to read, but for many children, reading aloud can produce anxiety. Having a friendly listener can help, especially when that friend is covered in fur.

Sasha, a female 9-year-old yellow Labrador retriever, will lend a paw (and probably a few reassuring tail wags) to young readers at the Milanof-Schock Library on Thursday evenings.

“Our program targets struggling readers,” said Jan Betty, the library’s director of children and youth who is affectionately known as “Miss Jan.” “Research shows that reading out loud for 15 minutes each week to an animal improves confidence and comprehension as well as fluency.”

Miss Jan noted that the library has hosted canine reading buddies in the past, beginning with Rosie the Rottweiler in the 2000s, but there were none currently working with the library when Sasha’s owner brought up the idea.

There exists a specific group of people who frequent museums merely to satisfy their curiosity. They don’t go to intentionally learn, but the learning happens organically, naturally.

Perhaps it’s not important to know exactly what type of learning goes on at the North Museum, only that the place simply promotes learning.

“It’s the joy of discovery, and it draws you in,” said Scott Downs, the North Museum’s director of

development and strategic partnerships. “That’s what happens at a museum. As you wander around the museum, you discover things. You stumble into things. Who knows what you’ll find? You don’t know what to expect. It’s a fascinating place.”

For the curious of all ages, there is plenty to find and discover at the North Museum of Nature and Science, which is located at 400 College Ave., Lancaster. The North Museum is three floors of exhibits, informational displays, stories and

memories in the makingmore than 500,000 objects in all.

“Without learning, I don’t think any of us survive,” said Downs. “Humans have been learning since we first populated the Earth. The North Museum prides itself as a leader in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics). The natural sciences are important. We’re really proponents of curiosity. It’s terribly important to foster that interest.”

An independent, nonprofit regional facility once associated with Franklin & Marshall College, the North Museum of Nature and Science is home to all sorts of interesting exhibits, like a live animal room, a dinosaur hall, rock and mineral collections, a planetarium, a nature gallery, an art gallery and an ornithology collection. It’s a wonderful space to uncover things you didn’t know.

“The North Museum is committed to the community,” said Downs. “We are committed to being an

educational resource for everyone in the community. Science is ever changing. We’re not constrained to a fixed number of topics. It can be anything and everything. It’s living.”

The North Museum hosts more than 35,000 visitors annually, the majority of whom come from within a 100-mile radius of Lancaster. The North Museum has become a popular destination for field trips and bus trips alike.

“It’s genuinely inquisitive people,” said Downs. “They are people who are passionate about the museum because we have been doing it for so long. When parents bring kids to the museum, it’s an opportunity to explore together. It’s not just mom and dad bringing kids and letting them roam around the museum.”

“For me, the best thing is when I hear the noise of the kids,” Downs continued. “I hear kids teaching each other, discovering things

and having a great time. It reminds me of why I do it. I’m with an organization that preserves the past, looks to the future, and we sell education and fun.”

The North Museum, which was established in 1953, employs nine full-time staffers and 12 part-timers. The facility is funded through donations, sponsorships, government grants, admission fees and paid programming.

“I like to call us the Little Museum Who Could,” said Downs. “There is no shortage of big ideas and big accomplishments here.

We continue to change and evolve. There’s always something new and fresh to see with us. We partner with so many different organizations throughout the community. We also help bridge the gap between education and industry.”

“We really try to create access for everybody and create opportunities for everyone,” added Downs. “That’s a big part of our mission too.”

Registration now open for Santa Run and Walk 5K

It’s only October, but Nancy Husser is already thinking about Santa. More specifically, she’s focused on the Santa Run and Walk, a 5K organized by the Manheim Lions Club. The race, which encourages participants to dress in Santa costumes or other holiday garb, will take place on Saturday, Dec. 7. It will begin in Manheim Square at 8:30 a.m.

“The Santa 5K is a fun event,” Husser said. “We start with Christmas music in the¬†square all morning until the start of the race. The 5K course takes you through the west side of Manheim. We do encourage residents to come out and cheer the participants on.”

The course is relatively flat, she shared, with a hill around the 2-mile mark.

Both walkers and runners are encouraged to participate. “We have a range of participants from (ages) 6 to 76,” Husser said. “We will have bananas, water and chocolate milk for all finishers. Plus, this year we will have cash prizes for the top three overall male and female runners as well as medals for various age groups.”

The first Santa Run began nine years ago, coordinated by Reenie Ober, who at that time was the executive director of the Manheim Downtown Development Group. “She organized the first Santa 5K, and then the Manheim Lions Club has been sponsoring it every year since then,” Husser said.

Whether people are participating or attending as spectators, the Santa Run will offer an entertaining experience, she said. “It is just a lot of fun to do

something on a December morning and then to visit all the shops in town, have breakfast and just enjoy Manheim in general,” Husser shared. “It is just a fun community event in Manheim, and it just gets you into the Christmas spirit. Just come out and feel the Christmas spirit.”

The cost of registration for the race will increase after Friday, Nov. 1. People age 15 and older who register before Friday, Nov. 15, may receive a Santa

suit or a quarter-zip pullover, and youths age 14 and younger may receive a long-sleeve T-shirt and a Santa hat if registration is received before that date.

Race-day registration will be accepted beginning at 7 a.m. at Trinity Evangelical Congregational Church, located at 48 Market Square, but will not include a Santa suit or sweatshirt.

To register for the race, visit www.runsignup.com and search for “Manheim Santa 5K Run and Walk.”

Volunteers sought for emergency shelter

The Elizabethtown Emergency Shelter (EES) will reopen for the 2024-25 season on Monday, Dec. 2, and volunteers are sought to support its mission. The shelter will remain available through early April 2025. Elizabethtown Community Housing and Outreach Services (ECHOS) will host two volunteer training sessions: one for new volunteers on Wednesday, Nov. 6, and another for returning volunteers on Thursday, Nov. 7. Both sessions will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. at ECHOS, 105 E. Washington St., Elizabethtown.

The Nov. 6 session will introduce new volunteers to the shelter’s operations, and a tour will be offered. The Nov. 7 session will include updates on policies and procedures and changes to the shelter layout. The session will also include time for discussion.

All volunteers will receive a manual outlining key information. Light refreshments will be provided at both sessions.

Hailey and the shelter team have spent the offseason updating the shelter processes to better serve clients.

Volunteer tasks include welcoming guests, serving meals, preparing beds, and supporting shelter

staff members. Shifts are available during mornings, during days, and overnight.

Volunteers for overnight shifts must be 21 or older.

Those unable to volunteer in person may participate in providing meals prepared off-site and delivered to the shelter.

The EES operates as a low-barrier shelter, meaning it removes as many obstacles as possible for individuals seeking emergency housing.

For more information on volunteer opportunities or to register for volunteer

training, contact Carrie Stricker at volunteer@ ECHOSLancaster.org or call 717-361-0740.

Hailey Spangler (left), shelter coordinator, and Ashley Bulley, executive director of ECHOS, are ready to assist guests when the shelter opens in December.

This live re-enactment of the true story of the Pilgrims is drawn from primary sources. Thanksgiving Exposed takes guests first through a timeline that starts with Jesus Christ being the focal point for all of history. The story traces the Gospel from Jesus to the Apostle Paul and onward. Guests briefly learn about the impact of historical figures and events like King John and the signing of the Magna Carta, John Wycliffe translating the Bible into English, and Martin Luther and his 95

Theses. The tour moves on to the Reformation and Elizabeth I and James I, when persecution began for reformers in England, setting the stage for the rise of the Separatists. Guests then move through six stations that highlight God’s hand in establishing the Plymouth Colony in New England. It tells the Pilgrim story from the Pilgrims’ beginnings in Scrooby, England, through their escape to Holland and their voyage to the New World. Thanksgiving Exposed enables guests to witness how the seeds of Christian self-government were planted and later gave rise to the United States of America.

Dayspring Christian Academy’s Class of 2025 will offer treats in front of the school for guests to enjoy before or after their Thanksgiving Exposed experience. Homemade treats will be available by

donation. Funds raised will go toward the senior field study.

Thanksgiving Exposed is an outreach to the community that is designed to tell the true Pilgrim story based upon the original manuscript recorded by William

Bradford, governor of the Plymouth settlement. The event is free and open to the public, but reservations are required by visiting www .dayspringchristian.com or calling Candace Engle, special events coordinator, at 717-285-2000.

Over the years, the bazaar has grown so big, it now occupies multiple locations of the retirement community. Vendors and food will be set up in the community’s main building, with vendors also located in the Town Square North building, outside of Hearth and Harrow restaurant. Esther’s Collectibles, a thrift shop on-site, will also participate in the bazaar and will have a variety of items for sale.

Next year, organizers hope to be able to hold the event in the new

The book “Beechdale Road” is the family’s attempt to share its story of grief, anger and pain but also unexplainable grace, kindness and mercy at the hands of the Amish community.

Shertzer works as an adult advocate at The Factory Ministries in Paradise. She is recently married to her husband, Tanner. During the program, child care will be provided for infants through prekindergartners. cultural center, which will be part of an ongoing expansion project at Pleasant View. The Hoffer Farm project is underway at the community. Named for Pleasant View founder Edna Hoffer, the project will bring a variety of new facilities and opportunities to the campus for both residents and community members. The Manheim Community Library will move from its location in downtown Manheim to the Hoffer Farm, where it will almost double its space. A cultural center will serve as an event space for learning and engagement. Additional plans include creating a teaching kitchen that will be open to the public, a maker space and a child care center. The project will also expand walking trails and other outdoor activities on the

property. A capital campaign is currently underway to raise funds for the project, which will be completed in several phases.

In the meantime, Hoffman hopes people will come to the craft bazaar to pick up unique items, enjoy homemade food and support the auxiliary.

“We have really drawn some interesting vendors to the bazaar this year,” she said. “It’s going to be a really exciting event.”

Parking attendants will be available to direct people at the bazaar. For more information on the event, including previews of items for sale, follow Pleasant View Communities on Facebook. For more information on the Hoffer Farm project, visit https://pleasantviewcomm unities.org.

the place where Sasha had been working closed, and Sasha was bored,” recalled Miss Jan of her conversation with Sara Prescott. “All of our animals are KPETS certified therapy animals. Sara … has had some of her dogs here to read with children in the past. She is such an excellent owner/handler, something which is just as important as the animal.”

Children will register in advance for 15-minute reading spots on Thursdays from 6 to 8 p.m. “The child brings a book with them and shares that book by reading it out loud to the animal,” Miss Jan said. “While this is a time commitment of 15 minutes every Thursday, the results are impressive. Miss Jan emphasized

that readers will reap many benefits from the program, including increased motivation to read independently, increased self-esteem, reduction of stress and anxiety, a sense of pride in their accomplishments and a gentler, more respectful interaction with animals. In the long term, program participants are more likely to check out books from the library and ask the librarian about books.

DLT Farms will sell soup, sandwiches and loaded macaroni and cheese. The White Magnolia Coffee Co. food truck will sell coffee and other drinks.

“The food stands will be giving a portion of sales to Unlocked Closet, a (nonprofit organization) in Ephrata,” Harnly said. “They provide items to foster and adoptive families.”

Soup drive posted

Paramount Senior Living, 2760 Maytown Road, Maytown, will hold a soup drive to benefit the East Donegal/Conoy Christian Food Bank, located in Maytown. The food bank serves an average of 25 families each week.

People may place donations of soup cans in a drop box in the lobby of Paramount Senior Living on Mondays through Fridays from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and on Saturdays and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Donations will

be accepted during the months of October, November and December. There is an added incentive for co-workers and the public to make donations. For every four cans of soup donated, the donor’s name will go into a drawing to win a gift basket. There will be a total of three separate prize baskets, one for each month from October through December. Those with questions may contact Cindy at Paramount Senior Living at 717-426-0033.

Tdap vaccines available at Giant and Martin’s pharmacies

Following a recent report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that whooping cough, also known as pertussis, is on the rise, the Giant Company announced that Tdap vaccines are now available in all Giant and Martin’s in-store pharmacies.

Whooping cough is a serious respiratory disease that can be life-threatening for infants. The CDC recommends Tdap vaccinations for everyone with booster doses every 10 years or sooner if the person is pregnant or injured. This vaccine is a combination of shots that protects against tetanus, diphtheria and whooping cough.

Giant and Martin’s pharmacies in Pennsylvania can vaccinate customers age 18 and up without a prescription If customers are unsure if they are in need of a Tdap vaccine, Giant and Martin’s pharmacists can look at their medical history

Adele eight years ago. “Steph and I started this event because we both were having a hard time getting into other big vendor events, so we figured we would just create our own,” Harnly shared. “A fundraising aspect was super important to us because we wanted to give back, and Unlocked Closet meets such a great need in the foster and adoptive community.”

Rogers encourages everyone to come out for the market, noting, “This is a great event to start your Christmas shopping or just get to

know some local businesses. It’s a great way to support local families and keep our local economy running. I know they all appreciate the support every year.”

The exhibition hall building is handicapped-accessible. Parking is available near the building on Adele Avenue as well as across the street by the pool/softball field.

For more information, search for “2024 Holiday Market on Adele” on Facebook or Instagram. For more information on Unlocked Closet, visit www.unlockedcloset.org.

and determine eligibility. Walk-in vaccinations are available, but customers can save time by booking an appointment online at www.giantfoodstores.com/pages/ tgc-vaccines or www.martinsfoods.com/pages/tgc-vaccines.

Customers must bring photo ID and a prescription insurance card. Parental consent is required, and a parent or guardian must be on-site. In addition, customers can visit any in-store Giant or Martin’s pharmacy to receive their flu vaccination. Flu and pertussis vaccines can be given together.

The Mount Joy Fire Department teamed up with State Farm and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) to promote Fire Prevention Week, which was observed from Oct. 6 to 12. This year’s theme was “Smoke Alarms: Make Them Work for You.” Each year, the initiative aims to better educate the public about the importance of working smoke alarms.

Community members are encouraged to install smoke alarms in every bedroom of their house; outside each separate sleeping area, like in a hallway; and on each level, including the basement of the home. People should make sure smoke alarms meet the needs of all family members, including those with sensory or physical disabilities.

Smoke alarms should be tested at least once a month by pushing the test button, and they must be replaced when they are 10 years old or do not respond when tested.

In addition, Craig Rothstein and Greg Sullade recently donated a toolkit of Fire Prevention Week resources to Mount Joy Fire Department. The kit includes activities and information for children and adults, providing age-appropriate messages about smoke alarms and other home fire safety and prevention resources. Fire Prevention Week is celebrated throughout North America every October. For more than 100 years, the observance has aimed to educate people about the risk of home fires and ways to minimize them. Local fire departments, schools, and community organizations play a key role in bringing fire safety messages to their communities.
