Donegal To Present “Peter And The Starcatcher” By Chelsea Peifer
For anyone who has ever wondered what happened before Peter Pan’s adventures in Neverland, the story of “Peter and the Starcatcher,” a musical written by Rick Elice and based on the book by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson, reveals what unfolded. Donegal Performing Arts (DPA) will present “Peter and the Starcatcher” on Friday to Sunday, Nov. 15 to 17, in the auditorium at Donegal High School (DHS), 1025 Koser Road, Mount Joy. DHS junior Ashtyn Hess will portray 13-year-old Molly Aster, a starcatcher apprentice who is on a mission to save the world as she travels the high seas with three orphan boys and a trunk filled with magical star stuff that must be protected. “It’s a story telling how Peter Pan became Peter Pan,” summarized Ashtyn. “(This show) is fun, it’s comical, and it has serious moments.” DHS senior Corey Kendig, who has been involved with technology and backstage crews for past DPA productions, will be making his acting debut as snarky pirate chief Black Stache. “For me, it was really this ‘oh no’ See “Peter And The Starcatcher” pg 7

other items of remembrance. Dog Park Mount Joy is located adjacent to Rapho Township Community Park, 960 Strickler Road, Mount Joy. To reach Dog Park Mount Joy, attendees traveling Route 772 East toward Manheim should turn right on Elmcrest Boulevard, left on Heatherwood Drive, and left on Fieldstone Drive before driving around the basketball court and to the right end of the parking lot. Nov. 1 marked the third anniversary of the opening of Dog Park Mount Joy, and McCleary said that she can no longer imagine life without it. Although the group has nearly 500 member households, many with multiple dogs, McCleary said that the space never feels crowded. The dog park features a two-acre section for dogs over 35 pounds and a one-acre section for smaller dogs. According to McCleary, permission to build the park was based on the promise that tax dollars would not be spent on the project. Instead, it was built through community fundraisers and the 12-month membership fees. Applications to join the membership-only dog park can be found at www.dogparkmountjoy.com or picked up at the dog park. Students from Lancaster County Career and Technology Center (LCCTC) have contributed to Dog Park Mount Joy by building a bulletin board, installing a brick patio, installing landscaping, and more under the guidance of LCCTC instructor Aaron Adams. “In this partnership, everyone wins,” remarked McCleary. Dog Park Mount Joy will host a spaghetti dinner fundraiser on Sunday, Nov. 17, from 4:30 to 6 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, 47 W. Main St., Mount Joy. Interested individuals may purchase meals to go or opt to dine in with candlelight, music, and top-notch service provided by local Girl Scouts. Each meal will include spaghetti and meatballs, bread, coleslaw or applesauce, a dessert, and a beverage. Separate prices have been set for adults and for children ages 4 to 10. Children age 3 and younger may eat for free. To order tickets, people may visit www.dogparkmountjoy.com or call 717538-0810. Also, Dog Park Mount Joy is participating in the Extraordinary Give on Friday, Nov. 22. McCleary noted that donations to Dog Park Mount Joy will help to offset the many costs of keeping the dog park a clean, safe place where dogs can run free with friends. “Veterans, Values, and Voices: Words in Search of Our Missing Peace II” will showcase the veteran experience through art, poetry, music, and storytelling. The event, which was first held in 2018, will be hosted by Writeface at the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster, from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 10. Writeface co-founder Scott Hower, who is an Air Force veteran and a Conestoga resident, noted that the event was created after Lancaster’s Spoken Word Festival was discontinued. Writeface is dedicated to helping military veterans develop a healthier spirit through
guided writing exercises and had led a class at the Ware Center in conjunction with the Pennsylvania Council of the Arts, so creating a similar event seemed like a natural fit. “We picked it up as a way for veterans to tell their stories the way they want to tell them,” said Writeface co-founder Annie Ginder of Willow Street. At the event on Nov. 10, about 14 or 15 people will participate in some way. The majority are veterans, although Ginder and several other civilians will also be part of the program. “Everybody knows a veteran,” Hower explained. Paris Black, and levelheaded Angelo Finley, portrayed by Tyler Yarbrough, team up to attempt to produce a successful show. “Backstage: The Musical” was written by Eliana Kreider, 19, who has performed in several B2BD productions and will serve as narrator for this show. At its heart, the comedy is meant to make audience members believe in their dreams and the power of finding joy, even in life’s most chaotic moments. “It is just plain down hilarious,” said director Nicole Yutzy. “People will stay and watch our rehearsals, and they’re just roaring.” “In this show, the cast is aware of the audience and makes a lot of jokes directly to them,” Yutzy explained. “It’s a really fun show, and kids and adults will love it. Plus, it’s set in the 1920s, so you’ve got all of the fun fringe and sparkles in the costumes.” Performances are scheduled to begin at 2 and 7 p.m. on both days. To reserve free tickets, interested individuals may visit www.b2bd.org. Limited tickets will also be available at the door prior to each show, while supplies last. A freewill offering will be received at intermission to help cover the costs of the performances. In addition to Kreider, Black, and Yarbrough, the cast includes Marissa Harrington, Elijah Masciantonio, Joy Perkins, Ivan Karpitskiy, Jon Hurst, Anya Weaver, Mariya Martin, Emily Hackman, Ethan Black, Taryn Mellinger, Annie Mowery, Chloe Weaver, Katherine Osterhouse, Tyler Sommers, Tima Karpitskiy, Katya Karpitskiy, and Brianna Burkholder. Cast
members range in age from 12 to 19 and hail from Ephrata, Lititz, Manheim, Millersville, Myerstown, Reading, and beyond. Assisting Yutzy on the show’s production team are artistic director and choreographer Derek Martin, assistant director Kara Newswanger, music director Matt Yutzy, stage manager Brandon Harlee, set and costume designer Sophie Rogers, set designers Daniel Rogers and Jethro Beiler, props coordinator Jalisa Martin, and costume constructor Jessica Zeidler. Yutzy said that B2BD “kind of started by accident.” Yutzy had been teaching a theater class at a small, private school, and when the class got cut, many students were disappointed. She wrote a script for the students to perform outside of school, and that play was performed in 2013 at Hammer Creek Mennonite Church. “The parents and kids loved it so much that we decided to keep doing shows,” said Yutzy. “We love teens, and we love giving them the opportunity to use their talents or discover talents that maybe they didn’t even know they have,” Yutzy shared. “We want to give them a place to be loved and to celebrate their gifts.” “And, like our name says, we’re always doing something different,” continued Yutzy. “It’s fun to always try new things.” In 2018, B2BD staged both spring and fall productions, as well as a summer tour of shows at various locations. To learn more about upcoming performances, as well as audition opportunities, readers may visit www.b2bd.org.

moment when I found out it was going to be a musical,” said Corey. Having predetermined that he would try out for the fall production his senior year, he went for it and is enjoying his opportunity to portray a lead character. “Playing Stache is probably the most fun I’ve had in school. My goofy side is a lot like Stache,” Corey said. “He’s a pirate that’s searching for something, and he needs to be the best. He doesn’t really develop a whole lot, but he’s always the comedic relief.” “It has a lot of sneaky jokes that (the audience) is going to love,” added Brayton Alkinburgh, a DHS senior who will portray Boy - later known as Peter - a friendless and neglected orphan. “Peter had a really difficult childhood. He was forced to grow up in an orphanage where he was stripped of his own identity. He spent his entire life just trying to survive … and a big part of his journey to transformation is really about gaining his identity,” said Brayton. “We can all identify with Peter a little bit in feeling like we are lost,” Brayton continued. He noted that the musical uses story theater with actors not only portraying their characters but also objects like walls and props. “Everybody is doing a really good job of adapting,” said Brayton. Director Audra Brackbill is hoping that
performing a musical in the fall - in lieu of following the traditional format of presenting a play - will be a draw for the community. After reading through countless shows as potential options, Brackbill said that she had an undeniably strong feeling about “Peter and the Starcatcher” being the right pick for the fall production at DHS. “The characters have to be everything the entire time, so it’s definitely not an easy show,” noted Brackbill. “It’s a very imaginative show.” Show times are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 15 and Saturday, Nov. 16, with a 2 p.m. matinee on Nov. 17. Separate ticket prices have been set for adults and for students and senior citizens. Tickets may be purchased at the box office, which will open one hour prior to each performance. The box office will also be open from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 7; Tuesday, Nov. 12; and Thursday, Nov. 14. Additionally, senior citizens are invited to attend a dress rehearsal of the production at 2 p.m. on Nov. 14. Doors will open at 1:30 p.m., and audience members should refrain from arriving prior to 1:25 p.m. There is no charge; however, donation baskets will be available. Reservations are not necessary. Light refreshments will be served at intermission.
Buch Family of Funeral Homes will offer a special program to help people better understand and cope with grief and loss in the midst of the holiday season. Led by Deborah Gonzalez of Pathways Center for Grief & Loss, Hospice & Community Care, “Creating Holiday Memories of a Lifetime” will be a free program open to anyone who is dealing with the loss of a loved one. The program will be held on Sunday, Nov. 17, at 2 p.m. at Enck’s Banquet & Conference Center, 1461 Lancaster Road, Manheim. Reservations are requested. Looking to extend a record streak of five District titles, the Donegal field hockey team knew it had a hard road to travel and when the Indians were knocked down into the consolation bracket via a 4-0 quarterfinal loss to Palmyra the focus changed. With six teams advancing to the PIAA Class 2A Championship from District Three, Donegal’s title defense shifted to its state crown and the one victory it needed to begin that mission. Facing South Western (17-5) last
Wednesday in Game A of the fifthplace consolations and a possible end to their season, the ninth seeded lady Indians had to find a way past the fourth seeded Mustangs who were also hungry to extend their season. Through a scoreless, hard fought defensive battle on both sides, it was Donegal (14-7) that found it on a game winning goal by Emma Miller with zeros on the clock. The Indians earned consecutive penalty corners at the end of regulation with Kiera Baughman’s attempt at a goal denied by Mustang keeper
Aunnie Hacker on the first. Taking the insert on the second, Baughman kicked the ball out to a waiting Morgan Saunders after her attempt to advance into the circle was stymied. From there, Saunders fired a shot that was deflected just enough to sail under the pads of an outstretched Hacker and onto the stick of Miller who lifted it into the netting of the near post. Both Hacker and Donegal keeper CC Emswiler were on point in the cage with seven and six saves, respectively, while the stat line was almost even

with eight shots and nine corners for the Indians to South Western’s six shots and six corners. While the victory ensured the Indians of another trip to states, it also advanced them into the fifth-place game versus Berks Catholic. Saturday’s matchup with the No. 7 seed Saints (16-5) while not as dramatic, still had its moments. Donegal took an early, first half lead which it never relinquished, but twice Berks Catholic pulled to within one goal before the Indians opened up a three-goal advantage in the second, rendering the Saint’s final score of the game moot in the 5-3 Donegal victory. “It was nice to get an early lead with two goals in the first 10 minutes and draw seven attack corners in the first half,” commented head coach Amanda Janney Misselhorn. “We have been trying to improve on our goal scoring and scoring on three of seven corners in the first 30 minutes is the best we’ve done all season!” Saunders struck first for the Indians 3:20 into the game when Baughman, on an insert from Sarah Leidich, fed her the ball. The senior was able to blast a shot into the boards from seven yards out. The two connected again with 23:08 remaining in the first half, this time with Baughman getting her stick on a shot by Saunders and firing a goal past keeper Hannah Jenney for the 2-0 lead. Julia Bressler halved the Berks Catholic deficit two minutes later, but another successful corner, this time off the stick of Miller, with 8:53 to go before the break made it 3-1 and garnered praise from Misselhorn. “We generated a lot of attack today to pass quickly and create those opportunities. I’m also happy that we executed a perfect straight shot on an attack corner with the goal by Emma Miller and assists by stick stopper Julianne Wheeler and inserter Maddy Leety. We’ve been working on that set play for a while and it’s terrific to see us improve and execute that shot for a goal in an important game.” Both Saunders and Baughman added their second scores of the game in the second half, both on penalty strokes, in answer to a Saints goal by MacKenzie Partsch which came with 9:15 on the clock, to put Donegal ahead 5-2. Julia Bressler scored the Saint’s final goal of the game with only 4:46 remaining. CROSS COUNTRY The PIAA Championship race took place on Saturday in Hershey and Donegal was well represented as the girls’ team, along with Brock Overlander for the boys, all participated. Rhe girls finished 12th with 281 points while Overlander placed 65th overall out of a field of 227 with a time of 17:27. With that time, he stands as the fastest Donegal state qualifier ever on the Parkview course according to head coach Matthew Werner. “It’s Brock’s first year out for cross country and I couldn’t be more thrilled to have him. He’s a great kid who I’ve gotten to work with in track
and he’s a natural born runner, so seeing him excel in cross country isn’t surprising. I’m very proud of the work he is put in and the season he has had.” For the girls, this year’s finish marks an improvement on their 13th place standing last year and puts a stamp on a stellar three-year run that saw the Indians go 31-1 with consecutive 11-0 seasons the past two years including two section titles and two top-three finishes in the District Three race. “It’s the second year in a row that they’ve made the state meet as a team, which is a huge accomplishment,” stated Werner. “There are 181 AA schools in Pennsylvania, so to finish 12th is such a tremendous feat that we are all so proud of.”

Hadley Shoaf (20:44) and Myra Naqvi (21:12) led the ladies with respective finishes of 54th and 91st overall out of a field of 207, while Rachel Fernald (129th, 21:41), Marleigh Ballard (146th, 22:07), Emma Myers (159th, 22:23), Amanda Fry (163rd, 22:40), and Meg Zell (178th, 23:25) rounded things out for the Indians. In addition, Shoaf, Naqvi, and Fernald all made first team L-L League All-Stars while Fry, Ballard, and Myers made the second team. “Both the girls (team) and Brock have had a remarkable, story book season. I couldn’t be prouder of them,” added Werner. “Coaching a team that is so hard working and fun has been an absolute joy for the last three years. I am so happy to be a part of the Donegal XC family.”

in Ephrata, and East Lampeter Township resident Stephen Shaw, who served in both the Marines and the Army, will reflect on transitions. “In 20 years in the military, (my life) used to be go, go, go, but now I have stopped,” Zito remarked, adding that he has gone from a highly scheduled life to uncertainty. “Now I’m wrapping my mind around that.” Shaw agreed. “It’s a cultural transition,” he said. “You go from civilian life to the military and back to civilian life. Before you moved away from home, you had support, and in the military, you had support. Now (that) you’re out, you have to do it on your own. It can be overwhelming.” Writeface’s process helps individuals clarify their thoughts by putting everything on paper and then reviewing and reflecting. Army veteran Karl Dunkleberger of Mount Joy has been part of Writeface for five years, and he has learned and
grown through the experience. “My content is more focused and concentrated, thanks to Scott. He gave me freedom not to worry about my spelling,” Dunkleberger commented. “Annie has given me lightness to my artwork. It balances out the darkness.” In contrast to Dunkleberger’s longevity, Chieu Le of Lancaster is new to Writeface. He has been speaking at area high schools about his Vietnam War experiences as a member of the Vietnamese air force and later the United States Army. “I escaped communism in Vietnam at the last minute and was embraced by the warm arms of the United States,” Le said. Navy medic Gerrie Strobel now lives in Windsor and gladly comes to Lancaster for Writeface programs. She feels strongly about Agent Orange awareness and advocates for survivors of the dangerous chemical. “There’s so much more to be said about it,” Strobel said, citing Agent Orange side
effects and untreated PTSD as challenges taking a toll on Vietnam veterans and the inspirations for artwork that she will exhibit in the Nov. 10 event. Admission to “Veterans, Values, and Voices” will be free of charge. The event will take place in the Ware Center’s Writeface will host “Veterans, Values, and 400-seat Steinman Voices: Words in Search of Our Missing Hall, and the orgaPeace II” at the Ware Center on Nov. 10. nizers hope to have a Participants will include (front, from left) capacity crowd. “We Karl Dunkleberger, Gerrie Strobel, (back) want them to see Chieu Le, Annie Ginder, Scott Hower, Marc the value of what Zito, and Stephen Shaw. we’re doing with the veteran community and be more inclined rally in Chicago while wearing a military to support it,” Ginder said. “It’s all about getting a better (sense) uniform in 1972. For more information about Writeface, of the veteran experience, getting the general public to understand that in a readers may visit www.writeface.org or better way,” Hower remarked, adding contact Hower at Scotthower@aol.com or that he plans to speak about the time he 717-209-0410 or Ginder at 717-799-0154 accidentally wandered into an anti-war or annie.ginder@comcast.net.

VisionCorps received $9,500 from Murray, after Murray’s golf team participated in the Chubb Charity Challenge. The team, composed of Colin Brandt, Joe Kotula, Scott Wengrenovich, and Mitch Thoreson, won the local event for the Philadelphia area. By doing so, the team qualified along with approximately 40 other agencies to participate in the national event in Wisconsin. The team members finished in 18th place and earned $9,500 to donate to the charity of their choice. The Chubb Charity Challenge has resulted in donations to more than 6,000 charities in the past 20 years. This was the first time Murray has entered a team in this event. Juniper Village at Mount Joy residents recently had an opportunity to try their hands at Ikebana, the Japanese art of flower arranging. Residents of Juniper Village at Mount Joy recently gathered to learn about Ikebana, the Japanese art of flower arranging. Rather than arranging flowers haphazardly into a bouquet, flowers are arranged symbolically, according to the season of the year. To keep flowers in place, participants used a kenzan, which is a small pin-covered object, upon which stems are pierced for support. Residents participated by selecting which flowers and stems would be used, as well as how to place them on the kenzan. This type of arrangement focuses on balance, with the goal being to display each individual branch, flower, and stem artfully to bring out the inner qualities of the various living materials. Flowers from around Juniper Village were collected to create the arrangements. Residents selected a vase and then filled it with colorful pebbles and seashells. They each added a handful of these objects as they listened to the reading of an article that explained the history and purpose of this style of floral design. Juniper Village at Mount Joy is located at 607 Hearthstone Lane, Mount Joy. For more information, readers may call 717-272-8782 or visit www.junipercommunities.com.

The PSSDAR South Central District spans 13 counties in addition to Lancaster County, and representatives of DAR Chapters and CAR Societies from the various counties attended the meeting to network as volunteers and leaders. They also sought to raise awareness and funds for the newest PSSDAR state service project: the restoration of the Robert Morris stained-glass window at the George Washington Memorial Chapel in Valley Forge. The chapel was built as a living memorial to President George Washington; its art and architecture describe American history. Pennsylvania state regent Elizabeth Watkins, the keynote speaker, shared how water has eroded the chapel’s stone carvings, stained the walls, and damaged the windows. The Donegal DAR Chapter of Lancaster County was organized and chartered in 1892, and it is one of 3,000 NSDAR chapters, which are found in all 50 states and in 11 foreign countries. The Donegal DAR Chapter is made up of 124 members who are descended from some of the patriots who won American independence during

Four years ago, the members of Boy Scout Troop 64 first participated in the December holidays wreath-laying ceremony at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery (IGNC). “When it was over, many graves didn’t have a wreath on them. The Scouts asked why all graves weren’t honored with a wreath,” Assistant Scoutmaster Nina Evans recalled. “We researched and found out all wreaths are privately donated, and we decided our troop should help to get wreaths sponsored.” Troop members have worked hard in the ensuing years to collect sponsorships, and last year, 40,000 graves at IGNC had a wreath. The troop works with Wreaths Across America (WAA), a nonprofit organization that puts holiday wreaths on veterans’ graves to honor their military service. The wreaths are placed deliberately, with a small ceremony where the deceased veteran’s name is spoken aloud and saluted, ensuring that the individual is not forgotten. “Many veterans in our cemeteries don’t have any family left to remember them,” Evans said. For those who do have families, Troop 64 has a bugler who plays at graves when families request that service. While many of the people interred at IGNC are known only by name to the members of Troop 64, there is a personal connection with one individual. “Last year we found out a Scout from our troop was buried at Indiantown Gap,” Evans said, noting that the former Scout served as an Army Ranger and was killed in action in 2016. “This made what we were doing really come to life for the Scouts. A patrol flag he made hangs in our Scout room.” Troop 64 has not limited its involvement to December nor to IGNC. Several Scouts have made it a mission to do community service at IGNC, and they have helped with projects there already this year. Additionally, the troop has helped to get two local cemeteries on board with honoring veterans. 2019 marks the first time the Mennonite cemeteries in Landisville and Salunga will participate in WAA. The former will need 135 wreaths, and the latter will require 85. “Looking out over the cemeteries after the wreaths have been laid is overwhelming,” Evans remarked. “So many graves, so many families, so much sacrifice for us, for America.” Monday, Dec. 2, has been set as the deadline for wreath sponsorships. The wreath-laying ceremony at IGNC will be held at noon
on Saturday, Dec. 14, and the wreaths will be placed beginning at about 1 p.m. According to the IGNC page at www.wreathsacrossamerica.org, nearly 10,000 wreaths have been sponsored for the 2019 ceremony, and Troop 64 had reached 181 out of its goal of 3,500. Wreaths will be laid in Landisville and Salunga at about 2 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 15. Details are still being confirmed, Evans said. Boy Scout Troop 64 meets at Salem United Church of Christ of Rohrerstown, 2312 Marietta Ave., Lancaster, at 7 p.m. on Tuesdays. Boys ages 11 to 18 are welcome to visit anytime. For more information or to sponsor a wreath, readers may call Evans at 717-572-3448 or visit https://wreathsacross america.org/pages/43189/.
