Set in a sprawling, moody mansion complete with secret passages, sliding panels, a library, and a set of potential weapons, the fall play at Donegal High School (DHS) is a fast-paced comedy that cast members compare to a game of Clue. “The Musical Comedy of Murders of 1940,” written by John Bishop in the late 1980s, will be presented on Friday to Sunday, Nov. 16 to 18, in the auditorium at DHS, 1025 Koser Road, Mount Joy. Show times are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 16 and Saturday, Nov. 17, with a 2 p.m. matinee on Nov. 18. Separate ticket prices have been set for adults and for students, and tickets may be purchased at the box office, which will open one hour prior to each performance. All seating is general
admission. Following the opening night performance on Nov. 16, a reception with light refreshments will take place in the cafeteria for anyone who would like to attend and have the opportunity to meet the cast and crew. Additionally, senior citizens age 65 and older are invited to attend a dress rehearsal of the production at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 15. Doors will open at 1:30 p.m., and attendees should refrain from arriving early. There is no charge; however, donation baskets will be available. Reservations are not necessary. DHS senior Mackenzie Shirk, who will play the sinister German maid Helsa Wenzel, explained that “The Musical Comedy of Murders of 1940” plants a group of artists, producers, writers, and other creatives in a mansion as a snowstorm sets in. “One by See DHS Play pg 16

Armed with the belief that collaborating as a community can often yield far greater results than going at it alone, 10 nonprofit organizations based in the Elizabethtown area have teamed up to present Elizabethtown Is Extraordinary. The event is set to take place from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 16, in the gymnasium at Mount Calvary Christian School (MCCS), 629 N. Holly St., Elizabethtown. Organizer April Miller, who serves as director of development at MCCS, explained that the event will allow people who would like to support Elizabethtown-area organizations during Lancaster County’s Extraordinary Give on Nov. 16 to make donations in one central location. After noticing that most of last year’s Extraordinary Give events took place in downtown Lancaster - which can be a bit of a hike for folks living in the northern end of the county - Miller decided to reach out to groups in Elizabethtown to see which, if any, would be interested in collaborating this year. “I thought, ‘Why not bring everybody together under one roof?’” recalled Miller. The Extraordinary Give is an annual celebration of giving that enables donations made to any of the participating organizations during a designated 24hour period to be increased thanks to a stretch pool made possible by sponsoring businesses and organizations. Folks may donate online at www.extragive.org or at the giving stations that will be set up at Elizabethtown Is Extraordinary. Each of the organizations participating in Elizabethtown Is Extraordinary will have information booths and representatives on hand to answer questions and showcase the work they do. Groups taking part include MCCS, Elizabethtown Public Library, Hope Within Ministries, Naaman Center, Brittany’s Hope, Northwest Emergency Medical Services, Elizabethtown
Fire Department, House on the Rock Ministries, Bible2School - Elizabethtown, and Winters Heritage House Museum. Live music will be performed in the MCCS gymnasium by Fellow Heirs, a local band specializing in contemporary Christian music and original works. Free food including hamburgers, hot dogs, snacks, and beverages - will be served, and a variety of children’s activities will be offered. Attendees may also enter to win door prizes, such as tickets to area attractions and restaurants and a brand-name, waterproof action camera. Entrants must be present to win and claim prizes. Organizers request that individuals interested in attending sign up in advance at www.mcchristianschool.com in order to ensure that an accurate amount of food can be prepared for everyone in attendance. In addition to providing a fun time for the community, Elizabethtown Is Extraordinary will also make the organizations eligible for additional prizes. The Lancaster County Community Foundation, which organizes the Extraordinary Give, offers additional chances for organizations to win prizes during the annual day of giving, such as the 365 Collaboration Prize. A cash sum is awarded to the organizations that partner on a com-

National Collection Week is set to take place from Monday, Nov. 12, through Monday, Nov. 19, for the Samaritan’s Purse project. Volunteers like Ward get to experience the joy that abounds as adults, youths, and children drop off the shoeboxes at various locations before they are shipped to a distribution center in Baltimore. From there, Ward said the boxes are taken by tractor trailers, airplanes, or ships to the approximately 120 nations where children will receive the gifts. “During collection week, the best thing to see is when a family walks in and the child is carrying a box and they’re so proud they made this box and so excited that a little kid is going to get a box (they) made themselves,” shared Ward. “They’re getting gifts for children in a war-torn or (developing) country who may have never received anything like this before.” “For me personally, I get to pray over the boxes at each location,” Ward continued. “That blesses my heart, to know that I can touch so many lives in that way, because each box represents a person.” In April 2017, Ward had the opportunity to travel to Rwanda to help hand out shoe-
boxes to children and youths along with other Operation Christmas Child volunteer area coordinators from around the United States. Ward said that sometimes depending on logistics, the boxes are not distributed immediately at Christmas but later on throughout the year. This was the case with the Rwanda delivery, but the timing did not take away from the recipients’ delight. “You see almost a void of joy, and when that gift comes in, they really come alive,” Ward recalled. “The void that was in their eyes becomes this amazing joy. Like we say, it’s the light of Christ that comes in.” One 11-year-old boy in Rwanda opened a box that included a pair of winter gloves, causing Ward and the other volunteers to feel dismayed about him receiving something so impractical for the climate where he lived. However, they were surprised to see his exuberant reaction. “He was thrilled, and the translator explained it was because he had needed a pair of gloves to try out to be a soccer goalie, but his family couldn’t afford to buy any,” Ward relayed. “So the gloves turned out to be perfect.” Ward explained that families may use

way that the St. Mark’s family aims to meet needs and touch lives right in the local community is through the church’s food ministry, including a free Thanksgiving Day dinner held annually. According to organizer Janet Lehman, St. Mark’s began serving a free Thanksgiving Day dinner in 2005, when approximately 70 people enjoyed the meal at the church. In 2017, St. Mark’s served more than 400 Thanksgiving Day dinners. Some of the meals were delivered to people’s homes, while many were enjoyed at the church with family, friends, and community members. The 14th annual free Thanksgiving Day dinner at St. Mark’s will be served on Thursday, Nov. 22, beginning at noon in the fellowship hall. Turkey with gravy, stuffing, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, green beans, cranberry sauce, rolls and butter, dessert, and beverages are on the menu. Guests should plan to arrive between 11:45 a.m. and noon, as the meal will be served family-style at noon. Parking is available at the rear of the church. Takeout options are also available. Those who pick up a dinner to take home should arrive at the church between 11 and 11:20 a.m. only. Arrangements can also be made in advance to have meals
serve the Thanksgiving Day dinner. Many volunteers are again needed on Wednesday, Nov. 21, to help peel potatoes, make the stuffing, set up tables and chairs, and complete other tasks beginning at 6 p.m. Volunteers are sought on Thanksgiving Day to cook and serve the meal, wash dishes, and clean up afterward, as well as deliver meals to homes. Individuals are also needed to donate cakes and pies for the dinner. To donate a dessert or help with meal preparations, deliveries, or cleanup, interested individuals may call Lehman at 717-653-4189 by Saturday, Nov. 17.

Thomas Moran of Marietta is one of five Lebanon Valley College (LVC) student-athletes to receive weekly honors from the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) office. Moran, a member of the men’s golf team, was named MAC Commonwealth Golfer of the Week. Moran took home individual medalist honors and guided the Dutchmen to a dominant win at DeSales University’s Fall Invitational. Moran fired a 71 (-1) and was the only golfer to finish under par. The junior ended with three birdies and one bogey on the day. As a team, LVC finished with a 299, 20 strokes better than the second-place team, and it tied for the best finish since 2004. Donegal Claims 5th Conescutive Class 2A Crown by Vaughn Brown
In contrast to Friday’s monsoon that blanketed most of the region, Saturday saw a breezy, sun filled day on the pitch for Donegal’s District Three title match versus Palmyra at Milton Hershey. The Indians were going for their fifth consecutive AA championship, which is also a District record, and thanks to some stiff defense and a hat trick from Mackenzie Allessie they were able to realize that goal with a 3-0 victory. “I couldn’t ask for more from my defense or offense,” stated coach Jessica Shellenberger. “We’re performing when and where we need to. I’m very proud of their effort today!” Donegal, sporting red warm-up jerseys with the number 33 and the name Keeney emblazoned on the back in support of the Warwick community in light of the recent tragic event that occurred, wasted no time in going on the attack. The Indians earned four corners in the first 10 minutes of play with Allessie taking the insert on the fourth and working into position to fire off a shot that smacked the backboard with 21:36 on the clock. Palmyra created a few scoring opportunities as well, but a gritty
defense and stellar play in the cage by Aliza Johns kept them off the scoreboard. Johns made five saves on the day including a diving block to knock away a Cougar shot off of a rebound in the first half to prevent the tying goal. “As for us, the game is won and lost in the circles,” commented Shellenberger. “And in the past two games, we have dominated there.” Indeed, Donegal earned 10 corners in the circle and Allessie scored her second of the day with 4:45 to go before halftime on a slick reverse shot off an insert that fooled everyone on the Palmyra defense and slid by keeper Ashton Byrd for the 2-0 lead. Palmyra came out with a purpose in the second half, keeping play mostly in the Indian’s end, but the Donegal defense held because of a desire to keep the Cougars out of the cage as evidenced by Ruby Hartley and Cayla Homsher who backed Johns up in front of the cage, acting as extra keepers. Both combined to help defend against a Palmyra push on a corner that saw Johns out of position to make a play. Finally, with 6:39 remaining in the match, Allessie found a home for Donegal Indians - 2018 District Three Class AA Champions another corner insert off an assist score of the day. “Palmyra is a good Valley in the semifinals which were from Catherine Moran for the final team. They have a lot of young talent held at Warwick. Mikenna Allen found and will surely be back as contenders a way through the Indian’s defense next year,” said Shellenberger who for a goal with 6:05 remaining in the now has to prepare for another game, but by then it was too late for run through the PIAA bracket, and the Raiders who were eliminated 6-1. hopefully, another title. While it may have taken them until Last Wednesday, Donegal had to midway through the first half to score, first get through a familiar foe in Twin Donegal wasted no time in running

MERCHANDISER - Donegal Edition out to a 3-0 lead, scoring three times in under ten minutes before the break. Allessie, who had a hattrick in this match as well, led off with a solo shot off a corner with 16:15 on the clock to make it 1-0. Lily Saunders added another with 11:02 remaining in the half and Emma Miller increased the Donegal lead to 3-0 on a pass from Allessie which she pushed across and into the cage with 7:44 on the clock. Another Allessie goal five minutes into the second half made it 4-0 before Allen’s score cut the Donegal lead back to three, but Allessie’s third goal and Madison Leety’s solo shot with 2:28 left in the match punched Donegal’s ticket to their eventual historic District championship. CROSS COUNTRY After finishing third in the District Three meet on October 27 at Big Spring High School, the Donegal girls made the short trip to Hershey this past Saturday for the PIAA race where they placed 13th out of a field of 18 teams. Paced by Rachel Fernald who finished 57th overall with a time of 21:28, and Hadley Shoaf who was 69th overall with a 21:35, the Indians scored 300 points on the day. Because not all runners in the Photo by Vaughn Brown race are running with a school Cayla Homsher clears the ball from in front of the Donegal goal team, those that do are scored during the Indians’ 3-0 district-championship victory over Palmyra based on the field of team last Saturday at Milton Hershey. runners. When the Rotary Club of Lancaster/Franklin & Marshall (F&M) College Charitable Basketball Extravaganza started nearly 40 years ago, the idea behind the event was to fill an empty spot in the January F&M basketball schedule. Bruce Holran, then F&M director of public relations, approached then school athletic director Dr. William Marshall with the idea to establish a fourteam men’s collegiate basketball tournament early in January. The event would bring people to the college and raise funds for a local nonprofit organization. Since that time, the event has grown dramatically, now including eight top men’s and women’s NCAA Division III games. The men’s William Marshall TipOff Tournament will feature F&M, Stevens Institute of Technology, Hobart, and Alvernia University. The Terry Green Memorial Tournament for women will include F&M, Elizabethtown College, Washington & Lee, and Haverford College. The 39th annual Extravaganza will be held in F&M’s Mayer Gymnasium, 415 Harrisburg Ave., Lancaster, on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, Nov. 16, 17, and 18. A complete game schedule may be found at www.lancasterrotary.org/ event/basketball-extravaganze-2018.
Since 1992, when Marshall joined the Rotary Club of Lancaster, the event has been linked to the group. Following the partnership, both organizations worked to grow the tournament, eventually moving to the weekend before Thanksgiving to “tip off” the college basketball season. The tournament was only for men until 2006, when the Professor Terry Green Memorial Tournament added women’s teams to the mix. Proceeds from the Basketball Extravaganza will benefit the United Way’s Rotary Club of Lancaster Summer Youth Experience, a program that works to keep Lancaster youths engaged and productive. The Summer Youth Experience includes activities that are carefully selected for their benefits to students, specifically helping at-risk youths bridge the gap between the end of the spring semester and the return to school in the fall. The goal is to improve children’s lives and to reduce the likelihood of students dropping out of school. Current club president Althea Ramsay Carrigan noted that the organization is pleased to be able to support the program. “We’re incredibly proud of (the Summer Youth Experience), where youths in Lancaster can learn how to make friends, challenge themselves, improve self-esteem, and learn new

DHS Play from pg 1 one they’re all taken out, and there are a lot of over-the-top things that happen. (Audiences will) get the perfect mix of comedy and a little horror,” Mackenzie said. “There are so many dimensions to Helsa and many different ways to play her, so it’s been fun working with the cast and finding ways to put it together,” continued Mackenzie. She noted that the 11-member cast has become tightknit during rehearsals this fall, and the mix of newcomers and seasoned performers has been beneficial in helping everyone
to hone their skills on stage. Senior Elisabeth Kreider, who will portray heiress Elsa Von Grossenknueten, echoed those sentiments. “I really love how we’re all learning a lot together, and those of us who have experience are able to help those who are newer,” said Elisabeth. Director Audra Brackbill noted that having a smaller cast has allowed for more time for character work and developing the persona of each actor. Symphony Orchestra Plans Concert
The Keystone State Boychoir will perform in the Lancaster Symphony Orchestra’s concert on Saturday, Nov. 10, at McCaskey East High School in Lancaster. The Lancaster Symphony Orchestra (LSO) will hold the second concert of its 72nd season on Saturday, Nov. 10, at McCaskey East High School, 1051 Lehigh Ave., Lancaster. Performances will take place at 3 and 8 p.m. Maestro Stephen Gunzenhauser will lead the combined forces of the Lancaster Symphony, the Keystone State Boychoir, and the Lancaster Symphony Chorus in Carl Orff’s “Carmina Burana.” Guest vocalists Elizabeth Caballero, Daniel Shirley, and John Viscardi will be featured. The program will also include John Harbison’s “Remembering Gatsby” and Oscar Navarro’s “Paconchita Overture.” “Carmina Burana” (“Songs of Beuren”) is based on a manuscript uncovered in the monastery of Benediktbeuren in upper Bavaria in 1803. It is a collection of poems and songs in Latin, Middle-High German, and Old French, written by university students, minstrels, defrocked monks, and artists, dating from the 12th and 13th centuries. The works reflect a strong belief in destiny, an attitude that was a combination of medieval Christianity and ancient Greek philosophy. In 1935, Orff read the uncovered “Carmina Burana” manuscript as compiled by Johann Andrea Schmeller in 1847 and decided to use the texts in the first section of a trilogy of cantatas titled
“Carmina Burana,” “Catulli Carmina,” and “Trionfo di Afrodite.” By 1936, Orff finished the first part, and “Carmina Burana” premiered in Frankfurt, Germany, on June 8, 1937. The American premiere followed many years later in San Francisco on Oct. 3, 1954. John Harbison is a U.S. contemporary composer. “Remembering Gatsby” comes from an opera titled “The Great Gatsby.” It premiered in 1999, more than 25 years after work on the opera began. The opera was inspired by American author F. Scott Fitzgerald’s 1925 novel, “The Great Gatsby.” The “Paconchita Overture” is a Latin work by Oscar Navarro that premiered in July 2016. The name came from the combination of Navarro’s parents’ names, Paquito Navarro and Conchita González. The percussion section is the driving force behind the piece. The piece also features call and response conversations between the different instrument families, as well as complex rhythmic patterns that fuse with the flavor of Spanish heritage. Navarro performed two seasons ago with the Lancaster Symphony Orchestra for the U.S. premiere of one of his other works. To purchase tickets, readers may call the LSO box office at 717-291-4420 or visit www.lancastersymphony.org.
