Like many of the homes in Marietta, Cynthia McComsey’s East Market Street abode boasts quite an expansive history. Stone mason Joseph Hopkins built the two-story log cabin between 1810 and 1815 after having purchased the plot of land from Andrew and Esther Hershey. The Hersheys had bought the plot in 1804 from none other than David Cook, the founder of Marietta’s east section, known as New Haven. Hopkins covered the cabin with pebble-dash stucco before selling it to grocer Samuel Hipple, who split the property into two rental units. Today, utilizing furniture that provides maximal storage space is McComsey’s key for making the most of the small space. The home’s interior features

antique furnishings, redware and yellowware, and a collection of original pieces of artwork, amidst the low ceilings and wide-plank flooring. Presented by Marietta Restoration Associates (MRA), the self-guided tour will feature local homes as well as historic buildings including St. John’s Episcopal Church, Union Meeting House, Old Town Hall, Susquehanna Waldorf School, First National Bank, the Marietta Community House, and Pioneer Fire Company. According to tour chairperson Darlene Pruett, it is the longest continually running holiday home tour in Lancaster County.
Marietta residents Cynthia McComsey (left) and Vivian Carroll (seated) invite the community to usher in the holiday season with an assortment of upcoming events in the borough, including a visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus at the annual Christmas tree lighting on Nov. 24. insurance goal when Allessie worked her way through multiple defenders and managed to get off a scoring shot while falling to the turf. Despite a total of 32 corners over the last two rounds of play that have resulted in only three of Donegal’s four goals, the Indians are keeping the opposition off the board and that is all it takes to continue advancing. “Defense wins championships. It’s cliché, but it’s the truth,” commented head coach Jessica Shellenberger. “Our defense has been outstanding. You only need to win by one, so as long as we’re getting that one, I’m fine with the “lack” of scoring.” Leading up to Saturday’s win, Donegal faced Gwynedd Mercy at Hempfield High School last Tuesday in the opening round of the tournament and came away with a 1-0 victory. The fifth seed out of District One perplexed the lady Indians for the entire first half with a surprisingly aggressive defense that was anchored by keeper Zoe Rogers who stopped 17 on the night. “I think the “defense” by the other team is a testament to it being a death Photo by Vaughn Brown match. That intensity paid dividends five minutes into the final way to another. Out cornering the Patriots 20-2, Donegal rode a hat trick frame when Madison Leety was able to convert on a corner for the game winby senior Mackenzie Allessie into the semifinals versus Twin Valley with a ner. “We were definitely the stronger team on Tuesday, I think nerves kept us 3-0 blanking of the District 12 champs on a cold and windy day at Twin from really getting in the flow,” added Shellenberger. Valley High School. This will mark the fourth time in as many years that Donegal has reached the semifinal round and the victory puts them only two wins away from the second PIAA field hockey championship trophy in school history. For this group of seniors which has already won four straight District Three titles, Donegal’s fifth in a row, in addition to the aforementioned PIAA crown, it would be the icing on the cake to end their careers with one more. Attacking early, Donegal kept the majority of the action in Archbishop Carroll’s end of the pitch through the first half and took a 1-0 lead on a laser from Allessie with 22:45 remaining in the opening frame. Handling a corner insert, the senior worked inside the circle and blasted a reverse past keeper Mary Kate Kearney who ended the day with five saves for the Patriots. Allessie’s second goal of the match came with 4:42 before halftime and was the result of another successful corner. Passing the insert to Lily Saunders, Allessie immediately got the ball back and fired off another reverse into the cage for a 2-0 advantage. A little over halfway through the second half, Donegal added another

Community Place Grand Opening Set For Nov. 17 By Chelsea Peifer
A grand opening celebration for Community Place on Washington, 61 E. Washington St., Elizabethtown, will take place from 4 to 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 17. Area residents are invited to attend a ribbon-cutting ceremony, enjoy light refreshments, and take selfguided tours of the remodeled building. Formerly owned by St. Peter Parochial School, the two-story brick building was converted into a centralized space for numerous social service providers in the Elizabethtown area, thanks to a collaboration between the United Churches of Elizabethtown Area and various community members, organizations, and businesses. United Churches president Derrick McDonald will speak at the grand opening celebration, and other local dignitaries have been invited. According to Doug Lamb of United Churches, a capital campaign for the project began in May, the property was purchased in
Place includes a community conference room along with office space for Elizabethtown Community Housing and Outreach Services (ECHOS) and Elizabethtown Area Communities That Care (EACTC). Project leaders had hoped to use the space for as many social service programs as possible, and that goal is already rolling along. Tabor Community Services will offer free financial counseling to anyone by appointment at Community Place. Transfer General Education Development (GED) classes will be offered by United Churches in the community conference room, and that space will also be available for various groups in the community to use by appointment. Plus, Bear Bags, weekend meal bags offered to Elizabethtown Area School District students in need, will be assembled at Community Place. The house adjacent to the large brick building will be used as the winter shelter operated by ECHOS. Lamb noted that several upgrades

Wissler, a biology major and chemistry and psychology minor from Lancaster, is interning in the histocompatibility lab at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital. As a community-building component of the WCSC, the 15 students in the program reside in the Nelson Good House in the Brookland neighborhood of Northeast Washington, D.C., and bond through meals, taking in city life and playing games together.

Phase two of Community Place on Washington includes adding a building to the property to allow space for additional social services. Lamb said that several local groups have expressed interest in that space. “That’s a dream,” Lamb stat-
ed. “Our capital campaign is underway, and we’re looking for people to partner with us for that.” Ideally, Lamb would like to get things in motion to break ground for that new building in the summer of 2019. July, and remodeling began in August. Generous donations of time, finances, and labor made the project possible, and Lamb noted that more than 300 people came through the building at some point in the remodeling process to help with everything from electrical wiring to painting and other trades. “One of the exciting things about (the grand opening) will be all the volunteers having a chance to see what it looks like now,” remarked Lamb. The lower level of the building is now home to Community Cupboard of Elizabethtown, which moved into the space in late October. “The clients love it,” Lamb relayed. “It’s a wide-open space and a lot easier to use.” Formerly located on Market Street, the food pantry is open on Wednesdays to Saturdays from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. by appointment only. “They’re not run through a cookie-cutter process,” he said. The GateHouse is a nonprofit organization that is not specifically faith-based, but God plays an integral role in the recovery process, Yanchuleff said. Clients participate voluntarily; they are not committed. The GateHouse accepts medical assistance and some insurances as well as safe pay. To offset costs and increase awareness of the organization, Yanchuleff is working to develop a donor base. “Generally, people in recovery know of The GateHouse, but (others) don’t,” he remarked. The hope is that through events like the ExtraGive Soiree and TurkeyThon, members of the public will become familiar with The GateHouse and seek out ways to support the organization and its clients. For more information about The GateHouse, readers may visit www.gate house.org or call 717-393-3215. Folks who would like to donate or volunteer may contact Yanchuleff at rick@gate house.org or 717-205-3026.
The GateHouse staff members (from left) Kesha-Payne Ward, Kristi Martarano, Sheri Piefly, and Rick Yanchuleff invite folks to visit the Mountville facility for the 39th annual TurkeyThon on Nov. 21. The residential substance abuse treatment organization will welcome online donations through the Extraordinary Give on Nov. 16.

November is set to be a busy month for The GateHouse, whose mission is to restore the human spirit through recovery. On Nov. 1, the organization’s main office moved into the fifth floor of the Griest Building, 8 N. Queen St., Lancaster, and the office’s previous home at 817 N. Cherry St., Lancaster, is being converted into a center for behavioral health services. Members of the public may tour the new headquarters from 1 to 3 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 16, as part of the Extraordinary Give. During The GateHouse’s ExtraGive Soiree, attendees may enjoy refreshments and learn about the mission, vision, and values the organization has offered since 1972 to Lancaster County residents who struggle with addiction. Then, on Thanksgiving Eve, which is Wednesday, Nov. 21, The GateHouse will host the 39th annual TurkeyThon from 7 p.m. to midnight. According to development manager Rick Yanchuleff, the day before Thanksgiving has historically seen the heaviest usage of drugs and alcohol by folks who are struggling with the emotions and realities of the holiday. TurkeyThon was created to celebrate recovery through fun, food, and fellowship. A complete turkey dinner will be served, and AA and NA meetings will be held all evening. Breakout sessions will be held on the hour, and some will have guest speakers. Counselors will be available to speak with guests. Folks may drop in at any time, and there is no charge to participate. Games and other fun activities will be available for children. “It’s a family event,” Yanchuleff said. “Addiction affects everyone.”
The festivities will take place in a large tent set up on the lawn of The GateHouse Mountville, 465 W. Main St., Mountville. Parking will be located across the street in the lots of Froelich Park and Trinity Reformed United Church of Christ. The GateHouse is also working to further expand its facilities. Currently, The GateHouse runs a halfway house for approximately 20 men in Lititz and one for about 20 women in Mountville, but a new halfway house will soon be opened in the Rockefeller mansion in Marietta. The new home will have a capacity for 30 women, and the Mountville house will become a facility for men. At all of the houses, clients arrive just after they have completed detox. Once they successfully conclude a 90-day stay, the clients move into one of four transitional living houses in Lancaster city. After they graduate from that stage of the program, clients may live on their own while receiving intensive outpatient treatment. Yanchuleff noted that the treatment program is customized to each individual.

Grateful For An Act Of Kindness By Chelsea Peifer
Nancy Hower, president of the Columbia Veterans of Foreign War (VFW) Post 2435, 401 Manor St., Columbia, had been having a difficult time finding resources to accomplish some of the much-needed repairs on the building. After sending out letters and posting requests on Facebook, Hower began making phone calls and was delighted when a local small business owner stepped up to the task this past summer. Columbia native Lewis Weber started his own business, L. Weber Painting, 12 years ago with a minivan and two crew members. Hower had known Weber as a child and said that as soon as she contacted him about the need for improvements at the Columbia VFW, he was immediately willing to donate the time and services of his business. “It’s just so exciting to think that there are still people out there who will do things like this,” Hower remarked. “Columbia VFW, our veterans, and our community would

She was thrilled with how quickly the crew members completed the project and noted that last year Weber had also donated two weeks of labor to repairing

and painting the restrooms at Glatfelter Field. “(Linda) would have been very proud to know her son gave back to veterans and Columbia, the town she loved so much,” Hower said. “And now his kids can drive by the Columbia VFW and say, ‘My dad made this happen.’” Hower is still working to raise funds and find assistance with completing other updates to the building, such as replacing the roof and air-conditioning system. “We just don’t make enough money to do repairs,” she explained. The
building is approximately 50 years old, with the exception of an addition that was put on in the 1980s. Individuals interested in making a financial donation may call the VFW at 717-684-7380 or stop in. The Columbia VFW currently has approximately 480 members and is open from 1 to 10 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, as well as from 1 to 5 p.m. on Wednesdays and Sundays. To become an active member, interested individuals must join under a relative who has served in the military and is an active member. Anyone is welcome to join as a social member. Bingo events, which are open to the general public, take place on the third Saturday of each month. Doors open at noon, and play begins at 1 p.m. Additionally, the Columbia VFW hosts an oldies dance from 5 to 9 p.m. on the second Saturday of the month. Hower noted that building rentals are one of the things that currently keep the location afloat financially. Folks who are interested in renting out the Columbia VFW for weddings, parties, and other events may call 717-684-7380.

For a number of years, Music for Everyone’s Keys for the City program has placed pianos in various locations throughout downtown Lancaster during the warmer months. This summer, there were 12 brightly colored pianos decorated by local artists stationed throughout the city. Each piano, sponsored by local businesses or nonprofits, was placed in the city in mid-May and removed in the fall. A local piano class of eight adult musicians, many of whom are retired, visited the pianos on two occassions over the summer to test out their performance skills. With about two years of lessons under their belts, the group members played a few tunes solo or in tandem at one of the pianos before moving on to the next piano. The songs ranged from Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” to “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” to a theme from one of Mozart’s sonatas. The group was led by teacher Linda Rasmuson, who provides individual lessons to children and adults and teaches adult group piano lessons from beginning to advanced levels. The group members mostly performed for their own amazement and amusement, but their enjoyed the opportunity to play for others when they had an audience. The piano class members are looking forward to performing on the Keys for the City pianos again
next year. In the meantime, they plan to offer some impromptu performances on the permanent piano that Keys for the City has placed in the food court at Park City Mall.
Patrice Beittel (far left) held the music while Jack Encho (left, at piano keyboard) and Bernie Shire (right, at piano keyboard) performed a tune and Mary Kay Mowrer (back, left) and Penny Pritchett (back, right) listened. The musicians, who are members of a group piano class, performed on pianos stationed throughout the city of Lancaster through Music for Everyone’s Keys for the City program.
