REYS offers students love, support and fun BY CATHY MOLITORIS
When kids are looking for a place to go after school, Rainbow’s End Youth Services (REYS), 105 Fairview St., Mount Joy, welcomes them with open arms. “REYS is a wonderful place for students to have fun, to learn about God’s love and to build relationships with other students and loving
mentors,” said executive director Cristina Paden. REYS, which typically coordinates the start of a new year with the start of the school year, had a delayed opening this year due to some shifts in staffing, but the programs are now back on a limited basis. “We’re open three days a week,” Paden stated. On Mondays, students in grades six through 12 are invited See REYS pg 3

he theme of the Donegal marching band’s show this year was “Primary Emotions,” and there’s no doubt the band members were experiencing the emotions of happiness and pride on Nov. 4. The band took first place in the Cavalcade of Bands Championship for the Independence A division. Additionally, the ensemble won High Visual Performance, High Music Performance, High Overall Effect, Best Color Guard and Best Percussion. It was the first first-place finish for the band in a competitive championship in Donegal history. The competition was held in New Oxford and featured 12 bands. Going into the event, the band members felt confident, said Janelle Miller,
“It was a great moment to celebrate with each other.” Even back in band camp in August, we just noticed that this had a good chance of being a strong show. Going through the season, we tried to work hard and do the best we could.” As Corrine Watson, a senior who plays the flute and serves as the vice
president of the band, explained, the competition included bands from the region that were similar in size. Donegal’s marching band has 25 members. “We had placed first at some local regular-season competitions,” she noted, “and we were so excited to win this one. They started reading off the names of the bands going from 12th place up, and the excitement built. When they read out who won second place and it wasn’t us, it was that moment of, ‘We did it! We worked for this, and we did it!’” Sadie Hakkinen, a junior who plays clarinet and is the band secretary, said the show featured three songs. The band scored 94.075 out of a possible 100 points, she noted. “The show starts with ‘Inferno,’

Proceeds from the Christmas Market will be used to maintain and improve the Marietta Community House. The building has a long and important history in Marietta. Built in 1871 by Dr. John Huston for his nephew, the home remained a private residence until 1909, when it became a sanitarium that administered rabies vaccines to children. In
1919, as World War I was ending, Mr. and Mrs. Henry S. Hiestand purchased the building and donated the house to the community of Marietta, dedicating it in the memory of their son, Lt. Benjamin Hiestand, who had died while serving in the military. Over the years, the building has housed an American Legion post, a public library, a wellbaby clinic, a soup kitchen and the Pennsylvania School for the Arts, among other organizations. People always say marching band is a family,
and we spend so much time together to practice, so we get to know each other well. We shared a lot of special moments, good and bad, with each other, and we just hoped for the best in our season.” Even after the band left the competition, the celebration continued as the Pioneer Fire Company in Marietta coordinated a parade of firetrucks and police cars to lead the band through the towns of Donegal School District. “It was so special, and it made the day even more special,” said Janelle. “We really want to thank them for that.”

REYS from pg <None> to REYS from 3 to 6 p.m. On Wednesdays, programs are open for students in grades four through six, and on Fridays, students in grades one through three are invited to attend. Both of those programs are offered from 3:30 to 6 p.m. Activities vary depending on the age of the students, but all sessions share similar elements, Paden said. “They always have free time, they always get a hot meal provided
by our volunteers, and they always have Bible study or a life lesson that we share with them,” she explained. “Everything we do offers the students opportunities for connection and to get to know other people.” REYS also offers one-onone piano lessons and group martial arts classes. She emphasized that REYS hopes to soon return to programming five days a week and resume field trips
and special events for the students, and the organization is in the process of hiring a full-time student ministries coordinator to support programming. Paden noted that REYS fills an important role in the community, and when it was closed, people noticed. “A lot of families kept asking us, ‘ W hen are you guys going to open?’ Our kids kept asking, ‘When can we go back to REYS?’” she said. REYS relies on financial support from the community to offer its programs for
free to families, and it requires a roster of volunteers to support students. The organization is currently in the middle of a campaign to raise $100,000 by the end of the year, Paden noted. “We want to do everything we can to continue to make our programs possible for local families,” she remarked. “REYS is a really fun place to make friends and for students to receive extra support and love as they journey through life.” For more information on REYS, visit https://reys.org.

Local business launches initiative Local design studio Lime Creative has announced an initiative called LimeAid to provide no-cost creative services to small, start-up and under-resourced nonprofit organizations and ministries. Conceived by Lime Creative owner and Lancaster native Laura Kline, LimeAid’s focus will be on supporting nonprofit partners for specific projects they designate and define during the application and review process. Kline has nearly two decades of experience working with nonprofits and ministries as a graphic designer, Web designer and developer and marketing and communications consultant. LimeAid provides a cost estimate for each partner ministry’s project, and then
cuts it by 50%, which is Lime Creative’s personal donation to the cause. The remaining 50% of the estimated costs are covered through the generosity of donors, who support individual projects on a case-bycase basis or agree to support LimeAid monthly. The number of ministry partners and projects to be taken on depends on the amount of support raised. Since 2007, Lime Creative has helped nonprofits and small businesses grow by developing brands that speak clearly, create connections and inspire action. For more information about the LimeAid project or to support a current project, visit www.LimeAid.org.

“We’re asking the community for more help than ever because the cost of living keeps going up.” Bechtold is joined in her Christmas meal effort by Sis Luzader, who has been helping with the meals for 35 years. Any senior is eligible to receive a meal and food bag, no matter their income or circumstances. “This is not charity,” Bechtold said. “This is not just for low-income people. This is strictly for people who will be alone on the holiday. Christmas is a special day, and seniors should not be alone. Even though they can’t stay and eat there, they can come in and visit with us when they pick up their meal.” She emphasized that anyone who would like a meal should sign up for one. “I want to make sure no one is ashamed to call,” she said. Sometimes, when she’s out running errands, Helen Bechtold feels like a celebrity. “It could be July and it’s about 105 degrees outside, and people will see me on the street and they’ll say, ‘Hey! You’re the Christmas lady!’” she said with a smile. For the 36th year, Bechtold is organizing a free Christmas Day dinner for anyone age 55 or older. The meal will be available for pickup only at the Hambones Social Club of the Columbia Borough Fire Department, 726 Manor St., from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 25. “We’re going to have ham, turkey, filling, mashed potatoes, a vegetable, a roll and butter and a dessert,” Bechtold said. “I wasn’t sure we were going to be able to have
turkey, because our volunteers are getting older and it’s a job to cook and prepare the turkeys, but we found enough help to do it.” Along with the meal, each senior will receive a bag of food, much of which Bechtold purchases herself. “If I see something I think a senior will like in their bag, I’ll pick it up for them,” she said. “I like to give them things they don’t normally go out and buy.” Although she loves giving back, she noted that she’s looking for community support of donations of gift cards, candy or other items for the bags. “After the pandemic, we thought things would get easier, but it’s really gotten harder for people,” Bechtold said, noting that last year she served more than 100 meals.
