SSC To Debut “A Children’s Christmas Carol” By Chelsea Peifer
Director Jim Johnson wanted to be sure that Susquehanna Stage Company (SSC) performed something unique for its first major children’s production in the Eater Theater at Marietta Center for the Arts, 133 W. Market St., Marietta. Instead of performing a show that was pegged outright for youths, he opted for an adaptation of Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol.” SSC board member Asher Johnson, who is also Jim’s son and regularly appears in SSC productions, wrote the original adaptation, “A Children’s Christmas Carol,” which is filled with Christmas carols and songs. “It’s pretty true to the Charles Dickens version and has the same characters, but we wanted something that was more tailored for younger kids,” commented Asher. A beloved holiday favorite, the tale follows embittered Ebenezer Scrooge, played by
Brayton Alkinburgh, as he clings to his miserly ways and declares the joys of Christmas to be “Bah! Humbug!” Scrooge’s disheartened mentality is shaken up through the course of several events, including encounters with the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future - portrayed by Emma Witman, Anastasia Hess, and Teresa Moore, respectively. Zac Snyder will play Bob Cratchit, Scrooge’s employee. “I get to be the happiness of the show and spread cheer with my family,” said Zac, who lives in Columbia and attends Lancaster Catholic High School. This will be his fifth performance with SSC. Mrs. Cratchit will be portrayed by Julia Bono, who is making her SSC debut. “I love this show, and I was really interested in playing a character who is a lot older than me and who has kids,” shared Julia, a Lampeter resident and student at Lancaster Country Susquehanna Stage Company will perform “A Children’s Christmas Day School. Carol” at the Marietta Center for the Arts on the weekends of See Susquehanna Stage pg 6 Dec. 6 to 8 and Dec. 13 to 15.

Chiques United Methodist Church (UMC), 1215 E. Main St., Mount Joy, celebrated its 60-year anniversary on Nov. 3 with an anniversary banquet at The Gathering Place in Mount Joy. The anniversary celebration began with a worship service at 9:45 a.m. with a morning message by the Rev. Dr. Reid S. Thomas Jr. At the noontime banquet, Michael Byrd, the current pastor at Chiques,
provided the welcome and invocation. The dinner was then served family style, with the menu including fruit cup, baked ham, stuffed chicken breast, mashed potatoes, baked corn, cauliflower, broccoli, carrots, dinner rolls, pie and ice cream, and coffee, hot tea, iced tea, lemonade, and milk. The Chiques theme song, “To God Be the Glory,” was then performed. A time of recognition followed, with Jay See Anniversary pg 7

“I’ve known this house all of my life, and I’ve always wanted to live in it,” said Donna Hlavacek, referring to her home on East Ferdinand Street in Manheim. Faced in pink Indiana limestone, the mid-century Cape Cod was built in 1954 by Raymond Hollinger, the former owner of Hollinger’s Mill on South Oak Street, as a retirement residence for him and his wife. Donna grew up on South Oak Street and has fond memories of the house with the “stegosaurus wall” of stone alongside the driveway and walkway leading to the front entrance. The property will be one of nine featured on the annual Women’s Club of Manheim (WCM) Holiday Tour of Homes on Sunday, Dec. 8, from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. “This is an iconic Manheim house, and depending on your age you’ll remember it as something different,” remarked Donna. “If you’re my age, it’s the Hollinger house. If you’re younger than me, it’s the Graybill house, and there were a few other owners in between there, too.” Reid and Inda Graybill, who founded Graybill’s Tool and Die Inc. in Manheim, were the property’s most recent residents prior to when Donna and her husband, Ken, purchased it in 2017. Ken passed away in April. Though apprehensive about being part of the holiday home tour, Donna agreed to feature her home when a friend suggested she do so in honor of Ken and his love for the holiday season. Her home’s sunroom will showcase a collection of memories Disney ornaments on the Christmas tree and other things Ken had collected with his children and grandchildren. Another room features Donna’s collection of original Stiegel glass pieces, while decorations in the living room have led to her dubbing it the children’s Christmas room. In addition to Donna’s property, the selfguided tour will include stops at the homes

Main St., Manheim, will also be stops on the tour. Discounted tickets for the tour are available in advance from any WCM member or at the following Manheim locations: Shaub’s Dry Cleaning, 22 S. Main St. Fullprice tickets will be available on the day of the event at any of the stops on the tour. All proceeds from the home tour will be used for community projects in Manheim, such as the upcoming Santa’s Helpers gift distribution. Each year WCM members shop for surprise Christmas gifts for children in need in the Manheim Central School District. Guidance counselors help to coordinate the effort so that families can remain anonymous, and each child fills out of a wish list with three needs and three wants. takes place. This year’s event is scheduled for 3 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 13, and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 14. Admission is free, and complimentary refreshments will be available. Woodcarver Doug Shaw, who has participated in the event since its inception more than two decades ago, explained that in the past artists were set up in the upstairs portion of the station. Now displays will extend into the lower part of the building that originally functioned as the men’s and women’s waiting rooms and ticket office in the historic station. “Architecturally, the men’s and ladies’ waiting rooms are the same; it’s just that there were spittoons on the men’s side,” noted Shaw with a laugh. In the ticket office, visitors will be able to see original accoutrements from an old Manheim schoolhouse, as well as train station memorabilia on the walls. Local author Dennis Denenberg will be on hand to sell and autograph copies of his book, “50 American Heroes Every Kid Should Meet!” Denenberg co-authored the book with Lorraine Roscoe, and it was a 2006 Notable

Performances of “A Children’s Christmas Carol” are scheduled for Fridays to Sundays, Dec. 6 to 8 and Dec. 13 to 15, at the Marietta Center for the Arts. Friday and Saturday shows will begin at 7:30 p.m., with Sunday shows at 2 p.m. Tickets may be purchased in advance at www.susquehannastageco.com or by calling 717-426-1277. “We love having Christmas programming for families that like to have that theater experience tradition,” noted Jim. “We have such a talented group of kids. Now that we have this space (at Marietta Center for the Arts), we hope to offer even more for children every year. ‘A Children’s Christmas Carol’ is a reflection of our education department.”

In addition to perusing the original wares, people may purchase freshly roasted peanuts outside the station, where an old Manheim peanut oven will be in operation. The Manheim Historical Society museum and the model railroad display located adjacent to the railroad station will be open to the public on both days, as well as Stiegel Glassworks 1976, located at the rear of the railroad station. Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health opened a seventh urgent care location - at 418 Cloverleaf Road, Elizabethtown - on Nov. 26, following a renovation to the Norlanco outpatient facility. The urgent care is open 14 hours a day and offers services and treatments that are often not available in a typical urgent care facility, including the ability to administer IV fluid for dehydration, two treatment rooms that have the capability to monitor patients for several hours, increased capabilities for asthma treatment, increased diagnostics for pain (stomach, leg, shortness of breath), and concussion screening. The urgent care is staffed by physicians and advance practice providers on the medical staff at LG Health. Open seven days a week with no appointment necessary, urgent care is ideal when medical attention is needed for sprains, cuts, burns, infections, or flu symptoms and when patients cannot get in to see their family doctor, such as after hours or on holidays. The outpatient facility also features new behavioral health and cardiac services. Existing physical therapy services currently provided at the outpatient center have also been expanded following the renovation. LG Health has additional urgent care locations on Rohrerstown Road in Lancaster and in Ephrata, Parkesburg, Lebanon, Lititz, and downtown Lancaster. Hours for the LG Health Urgent Care at Norlanco are Mondays through Sundays from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. For more information, readers may visit www.lghealthurgentcare.org to reserve a spot in line or call 717-627-7687.
